After duly addressing this direction, in like manner as we now come to send Your Honours by the bearer of this, the ship named in the margin, the requested door casing for the Company's treasury there, together with its appurtenances, specified in the enclosed bill of lading and invoice to the amount of ƒ257:7, wherewith Your Honours will please act as appropriate. Your Honours will also find noted in the aforementioned invoice some fathoms of heavy rope, which, according to Your Honours' request made in the letter of 15 August 1732, is now sent thither, and for which we must necessarily debit Your Honours' office, because the same was not requested by the ship's officers for the use of the vessel under their command. Furthermore, reflection having also been made upon Your Honours' request for a sober, capable copyist, we have, notwithstanding that Your Honours' aforementioned Batavian letter showed us that Your Honours also made a request to Their High Excellencies for clerks, without however in the least mentioning that Your Honours also came to request one from here, under the approval of the well-mentioned Their High Excellencies, understood to let the assistant Joan Woslank cross over to Your Honours with a closed pay account, in the confidence that the Company will be able to have the requisite services from him. Meanwhile Your Honours will also find added, in the company of the aforementioned pay account, an expense account of what was provided to the aforementioned vessel. And herewith we shall proceed to notify that the Commander Adriaan Maten, upon his urgent request, has been released by Their High Excellencies in full honour from this Commandery, so that he may repatriate via Batavia in such manner. From the private Europeans he has first taken so much in cash on account of the customs as the same will amount to and more, and subsequently a fine capital in merchandise, so that they stand amazed and wish they had not unloaded a single piece, in order to sail with their full cargo to Jeddah, where they might also have found the host at home. The Bengal traders have as yet sold very little, and what has already been sold, the merchants do not wish to accept because the goods are falling sharply in price, whereupon they have sought their right from the Governor, where it is not to be found, the more so because he is a co-buyer himself, which is very detrimental to trade. The miribar or beach master arrives here in the Honorable Company's lodge asking what the reason was that we unloaded no goods; to which was replied, asking first on whose behalf he came, he said in the name of the Governor; continuing thereupon that the orders of the Honorable Company were to carry on its trade quietly and peacefully, which cannot be obtained here, but on the contrary all acts of violence, extortion of money and goods, that the Governor was the first in trade, that we cannot nor shall unload any goods, but the ship with its full cargo in such manner. The 3 Surat ships that arrived here on the 12th of this month have already paid 60000 Spanish reals to the Governor in reduction of their customs duties, so that it is not yet advisable for the Honorable Company to bring goods ashore if one wishes to remain out of trouble; our provisions still remain lying. Asking the reason why the governor did this, he said he did not know, which was also asked of the second-in-command. When the junior merchants van den Berg and Akersloot appeared there, they also said they did not know, except that he was a very hasty and hot-tempered man; that in all likelihood it was because the ship was not unloading any goods, and that they had heard they wanted to send the ship with its full cargo to Souratta, which was harmful to him and the Imam; and as to what moved us to do so, they said the same as before, and whether everyone was not master of his own property; that the order of the Honourable Company is that if one cannot trade in peace, one will then have to dispatch the ship with its cargo to Souratta; and what the governor had against the Honourable Company to offer such insults, and that the provisions still remain lying there for his account; that the Company loved peace and seeks to satisfy the Imam his dues. Wednesday the 6th: Today Hassan Jassoes informed us through a Banyan that he has bought the Company's rented dwelling, and in case we were inclined to continue, we shall be required to pay 500 Spanish reals in rent every year, being 30 reals more, and must advance 12 years of house rent beforehand, being 6000 Spanish reals; and if we were not inclined to do so, we would have to vacate within three days, with which rent money he can easily pay for the house without advancing a single duit. Hereupon we requested to speak with him, but received no answer. Thursday the 7th Friday the 8th Saturday the 9th: The First Resident Vanden Berg had the governor requested to speak with him; he let it be known to do so tomorrow. Sunday the 10th: Early in the morning the First Resident again had the governor requested to speak; he said yes, immediately. And having arrived there, after compliments were made, he said we could not but wonder what reason the governor had to break our concluded contract, with which the merchants and outside brokers were satisfied, and that the governor should call them here present and they will say it in his presence; and they still want to conclude the trade in such manner which he, the governor, comes to break, such as 1/2 per cent brokerage that has been retained since the year 1729 for the account of the Honorable Company in deduction or reduction of the broker Wirsiusie his debit; that we have repeatedly requested of him, the governor, to bring the Company's iron into our lodge, because the English and French, Company as well as private, have much iron lying in the custom house, which must certainly cause confusion; and as it is the same to the governor, we cannot but wonder that such a small matter is refused to the Company, since it is not contrary to custom; and what the Honorable Company will have to say about all this treatment: first, taking 5000 Spanish reals by force, obstructing the trade, having forced us to unload the ship, and that nothing has come of all his promises and assurances up to now, the same as with the debt of Cassum Tourbettij; and now through the Turkish merchant Hassan Jassoes, who on the 6th instant let it be known that he has bought the Company's rented dwelling, with the notification that if we wished to live in it we shall be required to pay 500 Spanish reals in rent every year, whereas the rent is 470 reals, and 12 years of rent in advance. To this the governor replied that the Company shall not lose the 5000 Spanish reals, nor the debt of Cassum Tourbettij and the other matters that had passed, but the 1 1/2 per cent brokerage had to be done according to the custom of the country, and as for the matter of Hassan Jassoes, we had to settle that with him. Tuesday the 12th, Hassan Jassoes again had us notified to vacate the house, whereupon we gave orders to see whether it might be possible to look for one or two suitably located houses, though these will be very difficult to find. The French second in command, Mr. Blirand, has returned here from Betelfacqui. Wednesday 13, the movement in the city is very intense regarding the collection of cash for the purchased goods, about which there are very heavy complaints concerning the sluggish and very slow payment, which is made in imperial dollars, for Mexican ones are presently difficult to obtain. Wednesday 15, we again receive a notification from Hassan Jassoes to vacate the house, stating that he has bought and paid for the house. Whereupon we let it be known that this had not yet appeared to us, and moreover that the house rent ran as long as the ships lay here, that only then was the monsoon at an end, and that we could not depart so hastily with the Honorable Company's goods before we had sought another dwelling, for we could not lock the goods up in the street. For that reason, he is pleased to wait. All these troubles stem from the fact that the landlord Matturad, being a Banyan, owes the governor 5 to 6000 Spanish reals, and he is not in a position to satisfy it; for that reason, he was forced to sell this house to satisfy his guarantor, which was indeed bought in the name of Hassan Jassoes, but on account of the governor (who cannot buy dwellings in his own name, because when he is summoned, the real estate falls to the Betelmaal or royal chamber). Having seen that there is entirely no hope for the Honorable Company of obtaining satisfaction of the debt chargeable to the late Imans Nachoda, sale halebij amounting to 1000 Spanish reals, for which the broker winsinsie stands surety, which debt would indeed have been paid in time if the governor had not ordered the 1/2 percent brokerage, which was withheld on his account, from the merchandise in reduction of his debit, which the outside brokers shall also enjoy, who already since the year 1729 have enjoyed only 1 percent and our contracts were also concluded thus, because the brokerage is 1 1/2 percent in total. Everything here is in decay; the contracts are made and broken just as it suits their interest. It is also not practicable, not even from the main office in Batavia, to charge the expenses of the ships incurred at the place where they are to the account of that office to which they are destined. It is true that in our very humble letter of 15 August 1731 we made the request as follows: We urgently request whether your Honors would be pleased to have the kindness to ask the skipper on the ship capable of coming hither whether it is well provided with a good and sufficient hawser, because in the absence thereof we often find ourselves in great embarrassment, nor can we assist the ship's officers with one; which was renewed in the letter of 15 August 1732; for if the ship's officers do not need it, we are forced to store the same on shore in the warehouses, which in the coming year would be of no further use due to the damp warehouses, and no nation leaves them lying over, so that the Honorable Company would come to suffer a loss that could have been provided against. But that is impossible here and has never been in practice, as will clearly appear in the letter currently being dispatched, but rather how the Company can at all times very easily obtain its guarantee, following the example of the English in the year 1727. And even assuming the under-merchant van der Sturk had been on his guard and had not made the delivery, as a trick practiced by the broker Wersinsje and advised to the governor, they would in all likelihood likewise have blockaded the Honorable Company's servants in their lodge and cut off all supply of provisions in order to compel them by such want to make the delivery, as was shown to us all too clearly in the month of September of the past year.
