Of Of Persia dated 24 August Anno 1735 Concerning defective horse tack A quantity of 6866 lb of soured rice, which was so decayed and damaged, and emitted such an unbearable stench, that the entire air round about was infected by it, of which we know no other reason to give, than that we consider it certain to be caused by the moisture against the walls, or primarily by a leakage continually caused by the adjacent privy, which makes the presence of the caked crust, according to our very modest opinion, probable, considering that the partition wall has already been broken several times in such a way that the rice lying against it fell through into the privy, and although at present no such large opening is perceived, the floor as well as the wall where the rice mostly lay was found so damp from that origin, that this is indeed the most likely cause to which this fermentation and destruction in the crust must be imputed. From Approval, their High Noble, Severe, Right Honourable Excellencies at Batavia Thus resolved with unanimity of votes and determined in the Dutch East India Company Office Gamron on the day, month and year as in the heading, was signed: C. Thoenad, E. Engeld., M. Heijme:, J.s Poltant and P.s Muijts, and provisional secretary Resolution taken in the council of Gamron Thursday, 13 January Year 1735, all present In this meeting, a report was made by the commander to the council on how, after much trouble, he had constrained the Spahan broker Heemraads, residing here, in accordance with the issued arrest of the 20th of the past month December, to settle in the most binding manner all the still unpaid moneys concerning the said Spahan Office, and to have receipts taken for it here by the holders of the bills of exchange, on condition, however, that when the cash for receipt of the 3 small letters, to the value of 16680: — or f 7089:— — might be paid, they would again favour the Spahan broker here. Upon which, with unanimous votes, the Spahan interpreter Joseph Sahid and the oft-mentioned Heemraads being summoned into the council chamber, the latter mentioned person was given an appropriate reprimand concerning his thoughtless and improper manner of acting, as well as an equally sensitive admonition that if in the future he should overstep himself in such matters, he would be given his due reward in proportion to the harm which would thereby be caused to the Honourable Company; upon which, after making promises to take care in the future, and with a humble request for pardon regarding his committed mistake, he departed. After this, with the foreknowledge of the Council, the said Spahan interpreter Joseph (not yet being able, due to illness, to depart for Spahan) was asked whether, with the cash that was recently mentioned in our resolution of the 27th of the past month of December, Persia under date 24 August Year 1732 January Persia under date 24 August Year 1735 From past, together with another 200 man disbursed by him on the voyage hither more than received, a delay could be taken, or not. Whereupon the same gave as an answer that matters were so arranged there that he, with our permission, would himself take that cash with him upon his departure, to the end that all further difficulties might thereby be prevented. Whereupon he also stepped outside, and the assembled council thought it well to agree to this, resolving subsequently on the middle of this month to inform the residents upcountry by express couriers of the foregoing and further occurrences regarding the commission of Lutf Ali Khan, as well as to give notice of the provisional arrangements that were caused at this Office by the decease of the former chief merchant and commander Dames Bey, subject to the highly favourable approval of Their High Noble Severe Right Honourable Excellencies at Batavia. Regarding the aforementioned Lutf Ali Khan, the demand for what has been presented as a gift, both to Sheikh Rashid at the time when he became farmer of the customs and had arrived in Lar for some time, and to the Inspector of fortifications Baqir Khan upon his departure, for the friendship shown to the Honourable Company as well as promise of continuation, serving for everything by order of the deceased Mr Dames Bey of blessed memory, from 5 September to 20 December of the past year, as well as to Duke Muhammad, commander in this coast, the extraordinary gifts of the English, having consisted of the value of 80 to 90 Tomans in gifted cloths and shawls etc. to that duke according to received verbal report, on which account charges were incurred, it was then thought good upon consultation to also let that gentleman, with his favourites, receive a small recognition upon his departure in order to cultivate his goodwill towards the Honourable Company, both consisting, according to the statement of the warehouse masters, in the following commander Khan

De Cleen and the late Lord Dames Hey, his honour, or since the ultimate of February of the past year, both to this lodge and to the Company's horse stable, and likewise to record accurately the defects which most urgently and speedily needed to be repaired, and Honourable Ruling Lord and Lords, to have a report made and to submit it with all respect to the Honourable Lord Carel Koenad, Merchant and appointed Commander of the Persian Direction, together with the Council. Having taken note of what was considered and the inspection regarding the repairs having taken place on the said 30 December, the report rendered thereof to the Commander was found to read as follows: 784 3553. From blessings, to the best of the lords and masters would again open up, as we find effected by the kindness of Their High Nobles with the dispatch of two cargo ships, though under such restrictions as the accompanying missive from Their High Nobles indeed sufficiently made known to us, and particularly in case the assorted cargoes, contrary to the good expectations of Their High Nobles in the purpose of their dispatch, should not have the good fortune to meet with prospects for a speedy and profitable sale of those goods, ordered the same to be dispatched back to Malabar or Surat as soon as possible, on which he, the Administrator, now proposed and asked the members how to act in this matter to the greatest benefit of the Company; whereupon the members, after due attention applicable to this matter, together with the Honorable Administrator, approved and resolved, since here the voluminous goods of powder and candy sugar were for the greater part sold off and times now disposed themselves to a change for the better, in such manner to be permitted to hope for a fortunate sale of more other merchandise, to let said ships unload, deliberating further, last-mentioned, on the situation unknown to us at Bassoura, from where the necessary reports had already been awaited with great yearning, of which however up to this day nothing has appeared for our elucidation, and therefore a matter of the utmost urgency to proceed with the assignment of one ship or another thither for the transport of such trade goods as could most conveniently satisfy the requisition made by the residents under date of 26 May of the past year, and because from their latest letter of 21 August last it was generally understood that indeed the cardamom and Siam gumlac were entirely sold, and that of the other goods (except only the candy sugar, which seemed destined to remain unsaleable) still some small parcels were taken off, yet from what was advised one could absolutely not assess or decide upon the quantity and quality of their remaining stock to send a ship freighted with further merchandise, and our desire might not be well received by our Lords Masters. 1573. Aug: Ao 1735 Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735; From indeed came back to mind, but since one nevertheless expects within days the required advices from over there, and all the members similarly considered it best first to have the small ship Noordwijkerhout (meanwhile some reports might perhaps arrive) unloaded, but since already some leakage had been noticed in that small vessel, he therefore thought it well at the same time to have the two skippers of said vessels come inside in order to learn the condition of their vessels from their own mouths, which being agreed to by the members, Skipper Elias Roeming on Valkenisse declared his vessel was not harmed in the least, and Skipper Dirk van Gunsten on Noordwijkerhout reported having found major leakage; the same was ordered to proceed with unloading as quickly as possible, except for the iron, provided it was judged useful for Bassoura, thereafter to proceed with the necessary repairs, and after the completion thereof to hold himself in readiness to depart for Bassoura. Further, the aforesaid Administrator, having mentioned the brought woolen cloths, asked whether all the members likewise with him did not judge it most appropriate to retain the same in loco without sending the same back or towards Bassoura, all the more because the pieces retained here from the receipt per Barbesteyn were mostly sold, and according to the latest drawn-up net return, on average, had yielded a profit for that manufacture of barely 31 1/3 percent, whereupon the members, in consideration both of the just-mentioned profit and also that one had been raised only with flattering hope by the aforementioned Bassoura missive of 21 August of the past year that the same might still find a buyer at some time, and yet nothing further had appeared in that regard, found it just as advisable that only a few pieces of said woolen cloths be dispatched to or to Batavia; and further unanimously resolved that in case one, without having obtained elucidation from over there for the service of the Lords Masters, should come to decide upon sending a ship, it shall nevertheless have to be done with the same written instructions to those residents as was ordered by the aforementioned highly esteemed Batavian missive.

Concerning the ship De Windhond, which carried a quantity of 8879 3/8 lb of copper peijsen, regarding which Their High Nobilities, on the one hand, attributed this to the poor quality of the packaging and showed their resentment, since fully 270 pieces of sacks were completely rotted and entirely useless; and on the other hand, it appeared strange to Their well-mentioned High Nobilities that, upon re-weighing, the good sacks were found to be 163 1/4 lb lighter than stated. This led to the further supposition of Their High Nobilities that the weight at this office might easily have been deficient, which point, according to the aforesaid letter, was to be investigated, and further, in order to clear away all frivolous objections in the future, they had now sent over a set of Batavia weights, to the end that, if upon confrontation any difference were found, ours might be adjusted accordingly, following the information given to you regarding how the aforementioned stated difference of 163 1/4 lb on 8879 3/8 lb of copper peijsen sent to Batavia per the ship De Windhond dated 30 November 1733 might have resulted, just as Their High Noble, Severe, and Great Worships at Batavia themselves opine that this might have arisen from the weights then on hand, and therefore sent a set of new ditto to be used henceforth for weighing the peijsen. Invoice the amount of 100 pieces of dungarees, so-called Bengal, used in the packing of 214 bales of Carmenia wool, to the sum of ƒ229:12:— making 540 maunds, and which likewise ought to be paid, since it was incumbent upon him, whereof his Honour discussed the executed damage with the members, and in what manner the same ought to be reimbursed; —. Upon which reply, because the same had been ordered to be furnished again, His Honour asked the members their sentiments, whether one deemed the same culpable regarding any fraud committed or not. Whereupon the members unanimously agreeing with His Honour could not notice any deceit lurking behind it, but nevertheless this matter ought to be investigated as closely as possible. It had also already secretly been inquired after the disbursed price for that fleece from the natives, and it also appeared that they had bought it for that much or thereabouts, and therefore they acknowledged that man to be blameless. Only there remained to carry out an investigation in the correspondence between the Honourable Authority, the Honourable Gentleman, and Gentlemen: In dutiful compliance with your Honourable Resolution, the report is presented in all respect to the Right Honourable Gentleman Carel Koenad van Helden, Commander of this Directorate, and the other Gentlemen of the Political Council. Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735 that the offer ought not to be entered into, amplified, which the members, after reflecting upon everything alleged with due consideration, and on account of further motives, all very profitable for the Honorable Company, approved the work begun, and accordingly qualified the Honorable Director to properly enter into such a contract, having as its foundation the aforementioned two main points, to the greatest advantage of the Honorable Company. Resolved and determined further regarding the required Kirman wool, consisting of 24 books and 480 pieces, to undertake the procurement thereof and thereafter to send the half directly by the departing ships bound for Batavia, and the remainder via Tuticorin or Malabar for Ceylon, in accordance with the venerated requisition of the Right Honorable and Most Noble Gentlemen. From the above-mentioned transactions, Their Honors proceeded to redress, in accordance with the honored latest incoming orders, the matter of 22893 lb of asafoetida and 20 cases of claret wine sent to Cochin.
