From it having been decided by our Resolution of 7 May of the past year to demand the dispatch receipts from Cochin, so that the commissioners may, as required by Their High Nobilities, properly render an accounting thereof, as has been maintained in writing after a requested reply from the Commandement without any clarification on this subject, because the said dispatch receipts in the said boxes upon arrival over there were found entirely ruined and illegible, on which account, therefore, for the present nothing else could be done but to let the matter rest until further information is obtained about it, and concerning the cited [illegible], after much deliberation it has been resolved to let the said storekeeper George Guttchi reimburse the half, namely 172340, and the other half by the commissioners, to wit Brooshoofd for one fourth of the whole, or f 34: 13: 4, and an equal sum in cash counted out in reals to be charged to the deceased commissioner's account, provided that one shall meanwhile be obliged to adhere to other honorable orders, and for the rest it has been determined in this matter, after a proposal was made, in order to prevent in the future such confusion, to send copies of dispatch receipts, whether to Batavia as well as to other offices upon the dispatch of the goods in the packet, and to keep a registered copy of the same here. From as the circumstances may require; Further, the Honorable Commander submitted to the members for consideration the requisitions made, both by Batavia and other offices, principally consisting of 625 pieces of prepared he-goat skins, 1620 lb of shelled almonds, 1350 pounds of pistachios, 2 to 3 boxes of dried cherries and morello cherries, and 10 pieces of brocades, in order to order the same, as in former times, from Isfahan, since one is presently experiencing a tranquil period, the roads are safe, and no feared evil has been heard of for a long time, to make a trial by means of such a petition from upcountry, and so gradually restore everything to the old footing; The council confirmed this, as the Honorable Company does not [illegible], and that it is always charged at the highest rate by the merchants whenever something is needed, and that it could not involve so very much risk, the recommendation of prudence being left to the residents and the Commander in this matter, and at the same time it was also approved to dispatch the said Joseph Rahid, if he is still healthy or in a condition to do so, back upcountry with the cash pursuant to the resolution of 13 January to the amount of 8709 tomans. Furthermore, the Honorable President reasoned regarding the state of time and affairs concerning this city and its rulers, mentioning their presently maintained affectionate friendship, as well as their composure and their not harassing the Company's Banyan as well as Moorish servants, combined with a great respect for the European, and the integrity of the Honorable Company's reasonable requests, etc., wherefore the Honorable Commander, in order to encourage both the cultivation and the continuation of the same, just as the English gentlemen had already done some days ago by making some gifts customary for the previous fixed month, proposed to favor the persons mentioned in the following draft gift list, as below.

To the Honorable Person having authority, the Honorable Carel Koenad, together with the Honorable Council in Persia, at Gamron. The skipper of the Company's ship Valkenisse, named Evert Moenink, requests with all due respect to be provided tomorrow for the aforesaid vessel with eight small boards for repairing the ship's boat, along with the ordinary spices for six months, underneath stood: Which doing, etcetera. For the Company, on account of the necessity of the case, it was deemed good that all required therein, to make a frugal use thereof, be granted. Just as further upon the resumption of another request by the skipper of that vessel Evert Moenink, the chief mate Cornelis Walle, the petitioners Evert Moenink, Cornelis Walle, chief mate, Hendrik Prince, second mate, Pieter Provoost, also second ditto, and Laurens Ekelboom, master surgeon, request, since the junior merchant Jacobus Hendriksz passed away two and a half days after his arrival here, and they among each other at Batavia entered into a notarial codicillary proxy before the notary Petrus Dobbelaar, Gentlemen, request presented in all humility to the Honorable Carel Koenad, merchant and appointed director of this Persian directorship, and further members of the Political Council, the second mates Hendrik Prince and Pieter Provoost with the master surgeon Laurens Ekelboom having submitted the contents found as hereunder: Persia dated 24 August Anno 1735 in order that in the event of the death of one or the other, the survivors should administer the estate or inheritance of the first deceased, and of which presently neither a copy nor papers are found in the deceased's estate upon taking inventory by the Curator Ad Lites, according to his affirmation, they request in all humility to be excused from the accounting of the estate, underneath stood: which doing, etcetera. Which having been taken into mature deliberation, His Honor together with the Council, on account that the copy of the said procuration, whether in authentic or simple copy, was not found among the deceased Jacobus Hendriksz's papers, deemed fit to release the petitioners from the accounting of the estate, however only as far as could be adjudicated in law, and to let the Curator Ad Lites with his commissioners according to proper caution administer the remainder of this pertinent estate. By the death of the aforementioned junior merchant Hendriksz, that position on that vessel having become vacant, and the replenishment not being able to be delayed, it was approved upon his request to advance the assistant stationed here, Jan Fredrik Hartwig, in order thus to assist the skipper and other officers in the discharging of the said vessel, as previously already resolved; but whereas it was deemed good to have the small ship Noordwijkerhout discharged first, and that due to the indisposition of the bookkeeper of that latter vessel, the same is not able to attend to that work in respect of his duty, and also that according to the testimony of the attending chief surgeon, the same will need to undergo an immediate cure for convalescence, it was further approved to charge the appointed bookkeeper on Valkenisse, Jan Fredrik Hartwig, with keeping the accurate accounting in the discharging of that small vessel for convenience and security, in the presence of its skipper Dirk van Gunster, instead of the aforementioned bookkeeper. From Persia, dated 24 August 1735 Persia, dated 24 August Anno 1735 To the Honorable, Commanding Sir and Honorable Gentlemen: With all due respect, J:r Christoff Ruijpel of Berlin, provisionally sergeant, who arrived in the Indies as a soldier in the year 1725 aboard the ship Nieuwfliet, makes known how the petitioner in the year 1732, through the favor of Their High Mightinesses at Batavia, was promoted to corporal, serving as such until 12 June of the past year, when, during the cruise in the Sunda Strait, he was appointed as sergeant by the council of war on the flagship 't Huijs te Foreest, subject to the approval of Their High Mightinesses, and was thereafter stationed on the ship Valkenisse and recently arrived at this place in the said provisional capacity. He most humbly requests that he may graciously obtain from Your Honors the said absolute appointment and salary, and he, the petitioner, will never fail to endeavor to make himself worthy of that great favor through a sober and vigilant conduct in the service of the Company. With much respect, Herman Christoffel Kellenaar, of Gouda, who arrived in the Indies as a soldier at ƒ9 per month in the year 1734 aboard the Popkensburg, and subsequently arrived at this place aboard the ship Noortwijkerhout on the first of this month, makes known how he was advanced at Batavia by the high favor of Their High Mightinesses, first to third surgeon at ƒ14 per month and thereafter to second surgeon at ƒ20 per month under a new contract of three years; yet, as he is presently functioning as chief surgeon on the aforementioned ship, the petitioner very humbly requests to obtain the said rank and salary from Your Honors. The Council, having duly considered everything, and having deliberated whether this could well be reconciled with the Company's salutary maxims, and considering with regard to the said petitions that, owing to the sudden departure of the ships Valkenisse and Noortwijkerhout, these men were sometimes unable to profit from the favor of Their High Noble Gestrenge, Greatly Esteemed Authorities at Batavia, often caused by an intimidated respect due to Their High Mightinesses, have found it proper to favor the first, Joan Christoffel Ruijsch of Berlin, with the allowance and salary of ƒ20 per month as sergeant under a new three-year contract commencing today, and the other, Herman Christoffel Kellenaar, as chief surgeon of Noortwijkerhout with ƒ32 per month on his current contract, in hope of obtaining a desired confirmation from Their High Mightinesses at Batavia. Likewise, several vacant positions on the recently arrived ships Valkenisse and Noortwijkerhout needing to be filled, for which some petitioners had already applied to this Council by petition or otherwise, and who, by provisional appointment of the ship's council at sea, had also served for some time in the functions to be mentioned below to the satisfaction of the ship's officers, it has therefore been found proper, upon their presentation and good testimonies, to likewise confirm those persons therein with an increase in salary as detailed below. And first, to fill a vacancy for a clerk due to the laying down of the pen on 13 January last by Martinus Borderon, out of a shortage and illness of clerks, Frederik Herman Henke of Aalen, soldier at ƒ9 per month, who arrived in the Indies on 5 August 1732 aboard the Loosdregt, and subsequently arrived here in 1734 aboard the Jacoba, was appointed to that post with the enjoyment of that salary on his current contract. On this day, the 3 March 1735, appeared before me, Jan Bout, under-merchant and adjunct secretary of the Gamron Secretariat, being under the administration of the Honorable Karel Koenad, merchant and appointed Commander of this direction in Persia; in the presence of the undermentioned witnesses, the person of Dirk van Gunster, skipper on the vessel Noordwijkerhout, lying here in the roads, who handed over to me, adjunct secretary, a ship's declaration made on the voyage from Batavia hither under date of 12 Jan: of this year, with the request to make thereof an instrument in due form, which is done herewith by recording the said declaration in the protocol, which reads word for word as follows: We the undersigned, Jan Schaader, first mate, Paulus Coster, under-mate, Michiel Zeddewel, boatswain, Dirk Fijkels, quartermaster, all in the service of the Honorable Company and appointed to the ship Noordwijkerhout, declare hereby at the requisition of the commanding skipper thereon, Dirk van Gunster, to be true and truthful, that on the 12 January 1735, when the day before a heavy storm had blown, the chief mate went between decks to see if everything was 645:9 Persia under date 24. June Anno 1735. everything was still in good order, but noticed that the deck there was wet with oil, which the aforesaid mate reported to the skipper, who immediately sent the mate, boatswain, and quartermaster forward to go and see whence that leakage originated, and found three half leaguers of coconut oil for the factory in Persia, which were completely leaked out, to wit one wanting twenty-one and a half inches, one ten inches, and one six inches, which wanting has occurred both through the small worm-holes and through the age of the casks, and thus the oil ran out to loss; All that which is aforesaid we declare to be the pure truth, being ready, if necessary, to confirm the same by oath; underneath stood: On the ship Noordwijkerhout, sailing off the land of Diu on 12. Carefully considered, and moreover taken into serious consideration, the much esteemed successive orders of Their High Mightinesses regarding the conduct to be maintained and the practice of economizing in cases of this nature, notwithstanding the reasons through which deficits and shortages occurred, such as: on 423 canassers of powder sugar, 2 ditto found empty, and 1 ditto short up to 27 lb; 45130 lb of candy sugar, short 2832 lb or fully 1¼ per cent; 200 bottles of Barsac wine, 3 ditto delivered broken; 1 piece of fish-plate of 3 inches not received; 1 hawser coil, likewise not found; 40000 lb or 13 lasts and 10 gantings of rice, short 1000 lb or 2½ per cent; 200 lb of wax candles, short 9 lb or 4½ per cent; 720 cans or 2 leaguers of French wine, short 19¼ cans or 2½ per cent; 2160 cans or 6 ditto of Batavia arrack, short 738½ cans or 34½ per cent; 600 cans or 3 ditto of coconut oil, short 326½ cans or 54½ per cent. From Persia, under date 24 August Anno 1735. the ship [illegible] to their [illegible] alleged, confirmed with the annexed declaration, apparently to demonstrate that the damage occurred on the voyage without it being possible in any way to prevent it, and thus was caused entirely without their negligence, and also that at the same time no wrongful self-enrichment in one thing or another can (to our knowledge) be imputed to them; —. So it is indeed by the declaration of [illegible] that the 2 canasters of powder sugar found empty were melted away on the voyage due to leakage in the deck, and that it was also caused thereby that one ditto (which is included among these two in the findings) has delivered only 27 lb net to the ship's officers, the deficit has been accepted, just as the realized overweight of 2350 lb on the entire lot of that sugar shall be taken to the benefit of the Office; — but with regard to the 2032 lb of candy sugar, which besides this, by an error of 5 lb extra per canaster as they were weighed at Batavia, amounts to an excessive quantity of 3622 lb or 8 per cent, it is resolved to grant them 2¼ per cent, and to charge the remaining 4 per cent to their salary accounts, and according to previous examples; — the amount of the 3 broken bottles of Barsac wine being passed over on account of its insignificance; —. And stated on the invoice, but not delivered here: 1 piece of 3-inch deal board, and 2 wheel hawsers charged to the officers for compensation, the first with an augmentation of 2 capitals according to the order, and the other (as not relating to the merchandise in demand here) at 75 per cent above the invoiced amount. Concerning the deficit of 2½ per cent on the rice, it has been approved to pass 1½ per cent and to have the officers' salary accounts answer for the remaining 1 per cent according to the rate of the latest purchase price; —. Likewise, 2 lb or 1 per cent of the 9 lb or 4½ per cent shortage on a quantity of 200 lb of wax candles is to be credited to them, and the remaining 3½ per cent charged as above. Because those shortages far exceed the usual allowance, wherefore their accounts shall be charged with: — 588½ cans of arrack api, and 272½ ditto of coconut oil —. After this transaction, the Honorable Commander gave to the members for consideration what one now best judged to be: whether the aforesaid ship Noordwijkerhout, since the recent work with its caulking was finished and it is now disembarked except for the iron, according to the resolution taken previously on the date 7 February, should be directed to Basra, or to proceed with the unloading of its cargo. Appeared before me, Jan Bout, junior merchant and assistant secretary of the Gamron secretariat, standing under the jurisdiction of the honorable Mr. Carel Koenad, merchant and appointed provisional director of this Persian directorship, present the witnesses to be named hereafter: the persons of Dirk van Gristen, skipper, Albertus Lange, and Albertus de Wit, both chief shipwrights, all in those capacities on the Honorable Company's ships lying here in the roads, namely the first two assigned to Noordwijkerhout and the last to Valkenisse; Who declared, as they appearers individually now do by these presents, to be true and truthful, that they on the 16th of this current month, by the much esteemed order of His Honor the Provisional Director mentioned at the head hereof, betook themselves on board the aforesaid ship Valkenisse, in order to inspect there the condition of the topmast and foresail yard of the aforesaid vessel, whereupon after a final inspection the said topmast was found to be entirely unfit to be able to make the voyage from here to Batavia, And considering this necessary repair for the preservation of the Company's precious vessel can not be deferred, for which we are now, however, completely unable from our stock, so it is likewise found that the fish lying on the back in the middle of the foresail yard is completely waterlogged and rotten, for the repair of which the deponents deemed it necessary and best to fit 2 pieces of three-inch fishes. All that which is aforesaid the deponents testify to contain the sincere and pure truth, stating as reasons for knowledge as in the text, consequently also remaining prepared to confirm this their declaration, if necessary, under oath. It is deemed best to have the one and the other repaired from its own stock of woodwork, since that vessel will have to be provided with it according to the invoice. The chief surgeon of the ship Valkenisse having delivered a petition to the Honorable Commander, and the same having been handed to the assistant secretary for reading, it was found to be of the following tenor: To the Honorable Mr. Carel Koenad, Merchant and appointed Provisional Director of this directorship in Persia, together with the Honorable Council; Humbly makes known the chief surgeon of the ship Valkenisse, lying here in the roads, that during the petitioner's voyage from Batavia hither he was beset with various illnesses and accidents among the ship's crew, so that thereby his medicines and linen have been consumed, requesting therefore that the petitioner be provided with the necessary linen and medicines. Below stood: Doing which, etc. Whereupon it was resolved to grant the petitioner his reasonable request, insofar as the necessary medicinal requirements shall be at hand here, or can be purchased or spared without own inconvenience, with the understanding, however, that the purchase price and testing of the same shall first be examined and properly taken by the chief surgeon of this Company. From Persia under date 24 August 1735 From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735. Resolved and arrested in the Company's Gamron office on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: C Koenad, C Engelsen, Mr. Heijnitsz, Jan Pollart, Willem Meester, E Wuijts, and by the Secretary Jan Bouth and the Adjunct Secretary Dr Haan. Resolution Taken in the council of Gamron; Monday the 21st of March 1735, in the afternoon at 3 o'clock, all present. Having reviewed the previous estimate regarding the wool trade, whereof each member of the council had complete information, on account of which matter had been superseded until today; thus, after inquiry was made as to how one ought to acquit oneself in the present state of affairs regarding the continuation or suspension thereof, it was deemed serviceable by the council, with unanimous concurrence and therefore in unity, to undertake new measures therein. Whereupon it came into consideration which of the available clerks one could, with peace of mind, send along with the Armenian, based on the precedent and under a similar salary as of the year 1720 (at which time one Bartholomeus Lippenzier had been day-bookkeeper here and was employed for that purpose), so as to feel assured on the Company's behalf both in the event of death and regarding faithful management. Thus, after this consideration, the bookkeeper Simon Clemont was appointed and elected thereto by unanimous vote, in order to attend to the care of the wool for the upcoming annual season together with Auwannees, to the best of his knowledge and ability. It was also agreed to have a horse purchased for his journey, and from the 2 available mules to give one along to carry his bedding and further necessities. After this, with the general consent of the council, the said Auwannees was, in the present state of affairs, addressed in Dutch through the Isfahan interpreter. To which proposition he brought forward a great deal in evasion of the above-mentioned reduction, and would gladly have seen the one maintained with the other. However, the same was reiterated to him as before and a categorical answer was demanded of him. Finding himself thus so unexpectedly moved in such a weighty point, he finally came to reply that he would also do his best on this footing for the welfare of the gentlemen and masters, and hoped in God that it might be arranged with the 3 instead of 4 mamoodies, considering that the loss or despoilment of even a small capital would bring him into the most miserable labyrinth. Wishing him therefore much luck and courage in the forthcoming venture, while making known to him that someone with some knowledge of the language and of sedate conduct would be sent along with him, to the end that both might serve to our peace of mind, and that our gentlemen and masters might see the trade, which had recently turned out so detrimentally, sweetened and compensated once again by their faithful and reported conduct. With inquiry—without letting him sort out the decision through the said bookkeeper—whether he, in this time when everything had been restored to peace and quiet, would be able to procure the usual annual harvest, and that we moreover stipulated beforehand that he should not dare to purchase a single man more except at 18, 19, or at most 20 mamoodies in cash, or else the contract would immediately have to be broken off in case of impossibility.

Persia, dated 24 August 1735 From From Costen, dated 2 April Anno 1733. treatment in the matter subject, which is nothing else, from all this derived more value than his acceptance of the 300 tomans and 3 mamudis on each man of 6 lb for the danger residing therein according to the previous rate, it was also, after mature consideration for the furtherance of that trade, which could be obtained through the assistance of the regents to ours with a customary present, unanimously resolved and decided, from the available and so generous gift and other goods sent by the Most Honorable Lords, on the departure of the factors, to be agreed upon, in order not to let the same depart empty-handed for the aforesaid purpose, and of whose necessary calculation, concerning which agreement would be reached in the matter, a demonstration shall be made in due time. — The Honorable President having already some days ago communicated in detail to the members of this council the matters regarding the presence of Mirza Taqi, plenipotentiary of the well-known usurper of the realm Thamas Quli Khan, who arrived in Lar on the 5th of this month and, after a stay of 6 days, or on the 12th, departed again for the upper lands, both on the part of our neighbors the English gentlemen and on our behalf, as evidenced by the tenor of the journal recorded in the said interim, His Honor, in order not to make any new delay here to avoid prolixity, thought fit to make only a further disclosure and proposal in the case of the presents recently requested by the said Mirza Taqi and other grandees of the court, proportioned by His Honor upon canvassing and unanimous consent of this council to the amount given in the past year to Duke Latif Khan, together with his principal servants, as appears from the resolution of 31 July of the same year, founded on the decree of 13 June prior, concerning which His Honor then further recalled that, notwithstanding that the said Britons on the aforesaid occasion had attempted in a strikingly hasty manner to engage themselves in the favor of the aforesaid all-powerful minister and his favorites, and thus, so to speak, to gain the wind of us to the departed Prt. from Persia under date 24 August 173[illegible] from Kishm under date 24 May Anno 1732. there being considered what could be the least disadvantageous for the Company, it was found upon investigation that the report of the said Banyan was the truth, and in order not to burden or increase the damage already sustained on those goods by paying freight for their return, it was unanimously thought fit to have the aforementioned root, in its quantity and quality, destroyed by fire, in case nothing could effectively be made of it. Likewise, to inform the servants on the first occurring occasion, under serious recommendation, in the future no longer to allow themselves to endure such improper treatment by the natives so insensitively, to our noticeable displeasure, as in this case, but on the contrary, according to duty, to maintain by all means to the utmost of their ability the Company's honor and reputation, together with the resulting respect for its ministers; and also to order them, after the completion of the matter, to send a detailed report and writing. In dutiful compliance with your always honored order, we, the undersigned Basra commissioners, in the presence of the head surgeons Hartman Christiaan Kellmer, Commanding Lord, made a report, and submitted it in all respect to the Honorable Lord Carel Roenad, Merchant and appointed Director of the Directorate in Persia. Debating the matter and subject that His Honor, from experience of the actual condition of the Radix China kept here at the warehouses, thought fit to have an accurate garbling of that root performed in the presence of the present head surgeons Hartman Christiaan Kellmer and Lourens Ekelboom, as a work the knowledge of which best suited their profession, His Honor accordingly produced the following received report: and 689. From Persia under date 24 July Anno 1735 From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1738 and Lourens Ekelboom have examined the result of the batch of Radix China on hand and found the same to consist of the following sorts, namely: 92 lb. of the best 140 lb. of the medium, and 100 lb. very bad, but still somewhat usable. Wherewith, Honorable Commanding Lord, we hope to have completed this our commission to satisfaction, meanwhile arrogating to ourselves the honorable title of being, below stood: Your Honor's humble, obedient, and faithful servants, was signed: Jacob Brand, and Heindrick Ketting; in the middle: in the presence of us, signed: Hartman Christiaan Kellmer, and Paul Ekelboom; in the margin: Gamron the 20 March Anno 1735. In such manner it was also approved and resolved to let the 4 jars and 10 small bottles with preserves left over since Anno 1731 at the said office, in case they should still be on hand, be sold for whatever they might fetch, so that with longer keeping they might easily become of not the least use; besides which it was also resolved to supply those servants from the new supply of provisions with: 4 cellars of distilled waters 168 bottles of High-country and Barsac wine, together with 68 ditto Sack. Following the reading of which, His Honor proposed to the members, which was likewise unanimously agreed by the same, to separate 68 lb from the aforesaid best batch, well preserved in powdered sugar, for the office of Isfahan, to relieve the distress in which those servants, as said, find themselves; it being also thought fit to preserve the remaining 24 lb and the medium sort of 140 lb likewise, but each separately in the said sweetness, for the prevention of decay, and to retain the worst sort, or the remaining 100 lb, here for necessary use for the sick.
