In the presence of me, signed C:s Moenit;— Today the 31 March Anno 1735, appeared before me, Jan Bout, junior merchant and provisional secretary of the Gamron secretariat, standing under the administration of the honorable Carel Koenad, merchant and appointed authority of this Persian directorate, in the presence of the after-named witnesses, the persons of Christoffel d'Haan, junior merchant, Simon Clement, bookkeeper, and Maurits Bouderon, provisional assistant, all three as ordinary commissioners in the Company's warehouses, appointed to this office, who, for the benefit of the provisional warehouse master, the junior merchant Michiel Heynitsz, and I:s Pollaart, as well as for the maintenance of the pure truth, declared together and each separately, as they appearers do hereby, that they, at the unlading of the ship Valkenisse on the 7th of this month of March, among the delivery of the linen packs, having noticed one pack of Chits Ambersa No 89 and one pack of Chits Betillies No 97 to be wholly damaged from the outside, indeed even the outer gunny on one side completely suffocated and rotted; item, one pack of Rastapat No 63 on one of the outer sides over its entirety was covered with oil; and the said 3 packs consequently, in the presence of the officers of the said vessel and in the presence of the said provisional warehouse master Michiel Heynitsz, being immediately opened by them, appearers, at the same time upon examination and inspection of the pieces, there were found: in the pack of Chits Ambersa No 89: 28 pieces more or less decayed; Betillies No 97: 5 pieces stained; as well as Rastapat No 63: 10 pieces thoroughly permeated with oil stains. They, deponents, declared all that is written above to be the exact and unvarnished truth, giving as reasons for knowledge as in the text, offering at all times, if required, to further confirm the same with a solemn oath. Witnesses, the persons of C d' Haan, junior merchant, S Clement, and Martinus Bouderon, provisional assistant, all three now performing the service of ordinary commissioners in the Company's warehouses, who together, on their word of honor in place of an oath, declared, as they deponents each separately do hereby, that they, on the 7th of this current month of March, upon receiving and reweighing the linen packs brought from the cargo of the ship Valkenisse, found an underweight on two packs of Rastapat as follows:— 1 pack No 44, 7ber, gross weighing 580 lb, tare 257 lb, neat 323 lb, tare 7 lb, short 2¼ lb; as well as on one pack of Allegias de Malda No 147, specified at 266 lb, yet rendering 227 lb gross, thus short 39 lb; and the same 3 packs, though clean on the outside and well-conditioned, were therefore by their honors the deponents immediately opened in the presence of the provisional warehouse master, the junior merchant M:r Heynitsz, and in the presence of the officers of the aforementioned vessel, discovering ipso facto not only that the inner packing was damaged, the ropes thereof having been cut to pieces and the sealed bags torn open at the back, but also, upon counting the pieces, that: in the pack of Rastapat No 44: 8 pieces were found missing; and No 47 was short in content: 10 pieces; item in pack of Allegias de Malda No 147: were found 16 pieces short, and besides 1 [illegible]. Persia: under date 24 August Anno 1735: 471 From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735; 1679 lb. rice short on 10 garces, a deficit of 1/2 per cent 93 cadjang short on 6000, 1 1/2 per cent 644 cans arrack api on 24 leggers, 27 cans per legger 126 cans French wine on 4 leggers, 31 1/2 cans per legger 115 cans sour vinegar on 4 leggers, 28 3/4 cans per legger 165 cans coconut oil on 26 aams, 6 1/2 cans per aam 6 cans olives on 6 1/2 aams, 1 can per aam 7 lb. wax candles short on 600 lb. gives a deficit of 1 1/6 per cent. Upon all of which, accurate reflection having been taken according to duty and former precedents, it appeared firstly that the moth damage and internal deterioration of the 3 bales No. 63, 89, and 97 was probably caused on board the said vessel, and therefore resolved to hold the ship's officers responsible for it, though in a compromising manner, without damage to the Company, as it was deemed good to have the infected pieces cleaned and properly sold thereafter by public auction, provided they are charged to their pay accounts for yielding less than the latest purchase price of those assortments. However, concerning the three bales No. 4, 1148, and 1747, it being observed that the same, notwithstanding the good condition of the outer packing, were not only damaged from the inside by rope and wrapper, and diminished with one another up to a quantity of 34 pieces, and the last-mentioned bale No. 1747 lacking a packing slip, but also together with the superscribed gross weights were heavily differing by 60 lb., so that the rise of suspicious thoughts about this was taken up by the Council, and after mature deliberation it was deemed good immediately to call inside the skipper of the said vessel, Cornelis Momming, and in the place of the deceased bookkeeper Jacobus Hendricxen, the chief mate Adriaan van der Walle, in order to demand from them in face of the meeting with significant words the true reason for the breach of faithful dealing; whereupon both appeared, and the substance of the finding being presented to them by the Honourable Commander, the first mentioned declared beforehand that he had accepted all the bales received at Batavia for this Directorship in good faith, without the same having been examined in his presence or delivered to him, etc.; and finally both, upon the question put by His Honour, affirmed with an oath that they could and would assure without violation of their conscience that they had directly nor indirectly the least part, much less prior or lesser knowledge in and of the theft committed; after which both stepped outside, and their presented defense likewise being weighed and judged more credible than satisfactory, it was resolved to proceed with the writing off of the aforesaid purchase value of the 34 pieces found missing in the manner as above regarding the damaged bales, at the expense of the ship's officers; and here, with respect to the bale No. 1746, of which it was said that this packing slip was not found, to insert the packing slips of the numbered bales before and after, together with how they were stated in the invoice, unless the wiser judgment of their Right Noblenesses should in time determine and understand otherwise, the contents of the same might properly consist as follows: For Persia: Herein 100 pieces Malda Allejars, length 80, width 13 3/4 covids, well and properly. From Persia, dated 24 August 1735: From Persia, dated 24 August 1735: Bengal gumlac, the inspection of which upon arrival was postponed on account of the good external condition of the boxes and bales until the merchandise should be sold and delivered; we were well able to conform to this surplus in order to prevent further spillage and in consideration of the fact that this shortage is minor, and thus our disposition regarding this was reserved; —. Furthermore, the found underweight of 8¼ lb or 7/10 per cent on the nutmegs was discharged to the ship's officers as not excessive; —. And regarding the cloves, of which a shortfall amounting to 14½ lb occurred on 102 lb gross, it was resolved to have the spices received in the books according to the invoice, in order to enter the net and gross weight afterward upon its delivery, when the suckels shall be opened in the presence of the ordinary commissioners and a written report thereof shall be delivered by them under oath, in conformity with the recently received worthy orders from their Right Excellencies, the High Indian Government at Batavia. Estimation, that the plan founded upon a demonstrative truth was fully applauded and thus judged and decreed for the welfare of our honored masters, to accommodate the merchants with the stipulated prices if no more is to be obtained, and under hope of good success; Passing from this important matter to a no less serious point concerning the dispatch of the ships, the Lord Commander introduced some domestic, suspicious matters which had occurred and come to light since the presence of the present two vessels Valkenisse and Noordwijkerhout together (thus continuing, his said Honor, of such a terrible spectacle, as among other things the prohibited spice trade, and the breaking open and robbing of the Honorable Company's separate ship's storehouse, enticed and partly proven to have been perpetrated on the last-mentioned vessel by the greatest part of the principal ship's crew, so that thereby not only the so greatly desired peace was unexpectedly taken away, but furthermore in its execution the procedure was hindered, our mutual intention to dispatch shortly the Valkenisse to Batavia and the Noordwijkerhout towards Bassoura with the necessary cargoes, as previously indicated on 7 February and 5 March, and after that date shown by positive execution and proof that we were in earnest, in the various preparations made, as the Valkenisse was ballasted with red earth and the Noordwijkerhout, still having the bar iron in it, with dry sand); The council, having heard all this attentively, was in this matter convinced and of one mind with his said Honor, as was also resolved, to suspend the dispatch of both ships until, the judicial proceedings having been concluded, they could again suitably be provided with competent officers for our peace of mind, notwithstanding that the longer stay of these vessels would undeniably plunge us from one dilemma into another and expose us to feared difficulties regarding a renewed request from the regent Thamas Chan for the loan of these vessels for the well-known Hindustani expedition, mentioned under dates 18 and 19 February and 8 March of this year, according to certain private advices of 30 March 1735, sent to his said Honor by the Bookkeeper and Provisional Head at Spahan named Mattheus van Leijpsig, and upon receipt thereof on 27 April thereafter circulated among the members for reading, and further deliberated in the following manner.
