From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1737: From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735:—. which outcome otherwise in this report, beyond these particulars, is concluded. Any delay in the execution of the projected difficulty must be left to the future time, which we wish will provide us at the same time, from the always and hourly expected Passouras authority, with full assurance of the true situation at that factory, to the end that we on that side also with a freer heart than it presently appears may take the required measures for the welfare of the Honorable Company:—. And notwithstanding all the foregoing, it was deemed best to let the packing of the stock of wool bales take its course, but to suspend the purchase of the other petitioned goods and provisions both for Batavia and the outer factories, until one will be fully able to dispose of suitable ship's space for the transport of the wares, without impediment, so as to then appraise and ship the same afresh; meanwhile the well-mentioned Lord Director for his part, to lighten the writing work, took upon himself to make a beginning with drafting on paper the marginal responses to the received highly respected Patria extract advisories as a separate collection in itself; and bringing to the table from the same the matter of Amboina, containing a most wise opinion regarding the drawing up of such humble reply, he further put to the question how best satisfaction could be given to that extended budget; regarding which, after mature consideration and broad discussion, it was judged that one should take the exact words as they were written for the interpreter of the true intention, and therefore the literal sense thereof should be followed in its entirety, without deviation or making surmises to the contrary; —. According to the resolution of 13 January of this year, the excerpting of the highly honored orders having been further assigned to the present warehouse masters, the junior merchants Michiel Heijmitsz and Pollaart, both having acquitted themselves in that commission to satisfaction as much as their actual functions and physical strength would allow, and the first mentioned now having his discharge from this directorship favorably granted by their High Excellencies at Batavia, the junior merchant and fiscal Willem Meester was again joined to the said Pollaart, alongside the ordinary commissioner, in order to facilitate and promote the completion of that work, the junior merchant E. De Haan, both of whom kindly accepted this last assignment, promising to employ their best efforts thereto according to their ability—; Returning from this to the ship's affairs, the master of the rolls brought forward two separate petitions, the one from the skipper Elias Moeninx to obtain some ship's necessities for his vessel Valkenisse under his command, and the other from the chief surgeon Arnoldus Toreman to obtain some medicinal necessities for the sick on his designated vessel Noordwijkerhoud, as can be seen in the following transcripts, namely; —. Representation made and submitted in all reverence to the Honorable Lord Carel Zoenad, Merchant and appointed Director of this Persian directorship, together with the council, by the skipper Elias Moeninx commanding the Company's vessel Valkenisse lying here in the roads; —. Honorable Ruling Lord and Honorable Sirs, The undersigned, having received in the month of August of the past year at Batavia the necessary equipment goods for the service of the aforesaid vessel under his command, and having in the meantime, in the period of 8 or 9 months, both there and on the voyage hither, and here in the roads, through unavoidable use for repair, caulking, etc. of the said hull, completely consumed some of the said necessities, therefore takes the liberty dutifully to set down below which goods, and what quantity, and for what ship's work are presently lacking to them, namely;— 2 pieces thinkana planks, for repair of the longboat, the necessity of which appears from the declaration of commissioners under date 20 February past, 6 Chinese ditto, 18 ditto ditto for repair of the ship's boats, remaking of the bulkhead, etc., ½ barrel of tar for maintenance of the ship, masts, topmasts, yards, boats, etc., 1 barrel of pitch for Dutch caulking of the ship, both outside and inside, and also ½ barrel of paying-pitch for the boats, etc., 30 lb clench nails for necessary carpentry of boats, repair of bulkheads, 25 lb single nails and port scuttles of hatches, etc., 15 tie-irons, 6 lb flat-headed nails for breeching, rigging, to nail on others, 15 pieces flag bunting, for top flag, aft 5 English, etc., 10 bundles of Bengal sail yarn for repair of the sails, ½ hide of sole leather to make ready the ship's pumps, 6 pieces raw cow hides for blacking or dressing upon the rigging, etc., 8 lb red sheet copper for repair of the Moorish cook's kettle, Requesting therefore that it may please you that all or an adequate supply be replaced, trusting that the necessity thereof has been duly demonstrated, meanwhile;—. Commanding Gentlemen and Honorable Sirs, Humbly makes known your Honorable humble servant Abraham Meds, of Middelburg, how he, the petitioner, on 6 September Anno 1733 per the ship Barbesteyn as third mate at 8 guilders per month arrived here; subsequently on the 11th of that month was advanced by the Honorable Director Leendert de Cleen and Council to under-mate ashore here at 16 guilders per month on his current contract. Whereas during his stay in this Directorship he has almost always been sickly, and upon a longer stay in this place would become entirely unable to perform his duty properly, the petitioner therefore very urgently and respectfully requests, through the good favor of your Honors, to be permitted to depart from here with the first departing ships. /was signed/ which doing etc. And the Council likewise, considering this submitted petition, thought proper to apply what was just mentioned to this Persian Directorship together with the other gentlemen members of the Political Council; therefore to apply it in this case, and consequently to suspend its decision regarding it, in order to avoid incomplete work, until the opportunity of a general change among the crew of the said vessel could be undertaken for the security of such Persian effects. Notwithstanding this, Jan Volkertsz of Enkhuizen, boatswain's mate per the ship 't Getrouwe, as such with 22 guilders per month arrived in India and further with Valkenisse here, in consideration that his contracted time was served with accidental vigilance, according to the testimony of his superior officers, had his salary of 22 guilders per month increased to 24 guilders under a new contract of 3 years, conform to the regulation. Likewise Jan van Olfen, of 's-Gravenhage, as third mate at 8 guilders per month Anno 1734 per the ship Nieuwstad in India, and per Noordwijkerhout arrived here, since the undertaken remaining repair of this lodge, employed ashore to assist the carpenters in this sickly climate, and being found capable of said service, was at his own request discharged from the naval service to continue at this office in the aforementioned trade, under a corresponding higher salary of 15 guilders per month on his current contract. Therefore From Extract From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735 From Persia, under date 24 August Anno 1735 And to the aforementioned workmen, which poor people are presently daily without respite forced to expose themselves to the hardships of suffocating heat, out of compassion as a bonus, and to see the construction completed sooner before a still intolerable heat, on the 12th of the aforementioned month of April, with the knowledge of the people, were granted 2 small measures of extra wine beyond the ordinary ration of arrack on the usual days, the costs of these just-mentioned extraordinary expenses to be charged to the account of repairs, which by this small expenditure will be better preserved than by exhaustion in the work, when we according to our humble human opinion might ascribe such to the lack of similar refreshment and relief. Since of the number of 6 clerks favorably sent by their High Excellencies at Batavia, one of them passed away on the voyage, and another arrived here sickly, likewise thus ending without having contributed any use, also descended into the grave, and the remaining four, unaccustomed to this climate, constantly together with well one-third of the old hands, due to the turn of the monsoon, being afflicted with severe fevers, not capable of performing any service, it is therefore also out of great necessity, because the writing work in these busy times would not progress as it otherwise should, on the 10th of the aforementioned month of April with the approval of all the members, transferred from the military service and moved to the pen, the soldier Jan Christoffel Visscher of Elbing, Anno 1733 for 9 guilders per month per ship Gaasperdam in India, and subsequently arrived here with the vessel Noordwijkerhout, a person fairly docile of nature, and at the same time of good conduct. Likewise, at this juncture, the difficulty of the scribes rather increasing than decreasing, there was further added from the naval service Claas van der Kamp of Delft, Anno 1733 as quartermaster and 13 guilders per month with the vessel 't Huis te Spijk in India and as such Anno stanti per the ship Valkenisse arrived at this place, who, somewhat disabled in his hip, yet having his other limbs sound, and besides having shown himself tolerably skilled in the art of writing and arithmetic, came well in time and offered his service to us. Persia, dated 24 August 1735 To From Persia, dated 24 August, Anno 1735 The Honorable Commander, having made a communication to the members of this council regarding how the honorable orders of Their High Excellencies dictate, upon discovering shortages in spices, to have the oath of purification taken by those who had been entrusted with the handling thereof; and their advice in this regard having been taken, and the matter having been reasoned back and forth, it was unanimously resolved to excuse the aforesaid fiscal, along with his commissioners, from said oath, under the modest consideration that the aforesaid shortage of 7/6 per cent, due to the cleaning out of the refuse of the extraordinarily mothy nuts—which during that work undoubtedly caused an unavoidable reduction in weight through the flying away of material particles—is considered slight and is passed; provided that the presentation of the oath, made in the prior report and subsequently repeated orally, may consequently be accepted as sufficient, and may take effect here, as is hereby done. Regarding the confiscated 1065 1/4 lb of nutmegs, a parcel of as yet unweighed coffee beans, and 19 1/2 bags containing 50 percent mamoodies at purchase prices, belonging to the absent Chief Mate Ian Schrader, it was unanimously approved to have the nuts garbled and treated in the manner aforesaid, and subsequently to estimate the same at a fixed rate, and when they are weighed in the presence of the fiscal and the expressly appointed commissioners, and a report thereof is delivered in writing, to help dispose of them at the current market price; likewise to have the cash transferred to the Company's brokers for accounting. The weightier reasons for the delay of the vessels ready to sail, one for Batavia and the other for Bassoura, as made known by the mentioned resolution of 5 May last, having now been cleared out of the way, the Honorable Commander brought to the attention of the members that they could not be unaware of the rumors spread some weeks ago, but now confirmed, concerning the naval force that had penetrated into the gulf under the Persian Viceroy Thamas Chan, under the admiralty of Duke Lettieff Chan, for the assistance of the Arabs warring against the Turk; and what was to be expected from those reports (noted more broadly in the daily journal of this factory), namely, to whichever side of the embittered parties the uncertain triumph might turn, or however that undertaking might turn out and be decided at best, a complete standstill in trade at Bassoura for a considerable time was to be expected. Whereupon, on the proposition made by his aforesaid Honor, considering the demonstrated reasons and after mature deliberation applicable to this principal period, with unanimous advice, it was thought and resolved as most beneficial with regard to the Company's interest to refrain for this time from the intended dispatch to Bassoura; the more so since, being deprived of the so long fruitlessly requested and expected advices from the residents there, we remain fluctuating in uncertain imaginations, and regarding the sending of goods thither we would have to proceed blindly; and therefore to dispatch both vessels to India's headquarters as soon as possible, without a daily fixed schedule or determination of the time of departure. Accordingly, the Valkenisse directly, but the Noordwijkerhout via Tutucorin—yet convoying each other up to that latitude for security—must undertake the voyage, after the manner of the past year, in which manner also the distribution of the return cargo shall be arranged, and meanwhile everything shall be brought to the greatest speed and readiness. This having been thus decreed, it was also approved to have the last-mentioned vessel unloaded of the spices it had on board, which by the resolution of 7 February previously had been packed for the purchase at Bassoura. Likewise, immediately to give prior notice to the skippers of the said vessels regarding this taken disposition, in so far as this must serve for their instruction, just as they, being called inside, were also informed by his aforesaid Honor as required, furthermore ordering them to carry into effect the planned departure of the Noordwijkerhout at the first opportunity. Hereafter, the Honorable President informed the council that on account of the just-mentioned undertaken expedition of Duke Lotteef Chan, and the uncertainty of the outcome of the war, he had considered it advisable to meet and intercept that lord (though a known friend of the Company) in a pleasant manner, so that, in the prosecution of his designs after an unexpected invasion and surrounding of the distressed Bassoura, the Company's effects and interests there might not share in the threatening dangers and damages from the excesses of the plundering rabble of the conqueror, but be rescued by his powerful protection. Council dated 24 August Anno 1735 From Persia dated 24 August Anno 1735 They have caused the length and breadth of the required timber for the repair of the warehouses to be measured, in order, upon receipt of the report, also most reverently to request Their High Excellencies to provide us with such prepared timber, because in this fatal climate one can never rely upon the health and strength of the craftsmen, nor particularly upon any certain skill. The Honorable Commander, having long considered how matters should be saved here in the unexpected event of a fire, which God forbid, since the water is indeed not far, yes very conveniently situated, but the means to bring it forward for extinguishing were utterly lacking, made this known, and as all the members were of the same opinion, he had therefore resolved to augment the pending demand for household necessities with a fire engine provided with its accessories, item meanwhile to investigate whether one could not here contract in reserve to have manufactured a quantity of 40 pieces of leather or so-called fire buckets. Which both was unanimously affirmed by the council and noted as a laudable precaution, conforming with an orderly and well-regulated household. Likewise, upon further consideration, it was approved and determined to remit to Batavia untaxed all the superfluous firearms that will be found during the next inventory, and thus to unburden this directorate thereof. Since it has pleased the Almighty to snatch from us by death on the 5th current, after having been bedridden for some days, the Junior Merchant Jacob, appointed provisionally as warehouse master by the Resolution of 31 January last, and as the Junior Merchant Michael Heynitsz, presently still also warehouse master in accordance with that same council resolution, administering the work under an equal accountability with the deceased, of blessed memory, having obtained Their High Excellencies' favorable apostil, known to the council, upon his submitted petition and hearty desire to be allowed to leave this sorrowful place, seems already partly, yet not untimely, to prepare for his departure, from which it followed that the aforesaid office of warehouse master was soon to become vacant; so the Honorable Commander repeatedly placed under consideration whether, with the dispatch of the return fleet at hand, in the provision of which the aforesaid warehouse master Michael Heynitsz, wishing to enjoy his transfer, could not conveniently be burdened, one should proceed to a provisional substitution, testifying at the same time that the said case of death of such a useful help in the management of affairs caused His Honor the Commander quite a great deal of embarrassment, the more so because he could not imagine that the relieved and no less able Mr. Heynitsz, already privately sounded out in this regard, would, on account of his languishing condition, be diverted from his departure from this hateful place; adding thereto that, this notwithstanding, he considered himself obliged on behalf of the Company, before the votes were taken, to persuade the same further, for special reasons which His Honor reserved to himself, to continue in the aforesaid service, without passing over the junior members; which then having been done earnestly and urgently, and the repeatedly mentioned Heynitsz, with much modesty and appropriate expressions, offering thanks for the favorable opinion of his small capacity, having by a convincing and insurmountable excuse of true incapacity due to the loss of his health and its desperate recovery upon a longer stay in this sickly country, requested in that manner to be discharged thereof; Elias Nuyts, Junior Merchant in the service of the Honorable Company, and in that quality arrived here last year per the vessel Elsbroek, very humbly requests, since he, petitioner... Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735: From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735: the previous year and hot season had the misfortune of falling from the roof whereon one sleeps at night, by which his left leg and hand came to be broken, yea, in such manner that he, suppliant, to the inner sorrow of his soul, finds himself in this unusually inconstant climate no longer in a condition and able to serve the Honorable Company as required, so then he, suppliant, requests his release from here, since for a complete recovery a different, cooler climate is required, all as appears according to the annexed attestation granted by the head surgeon Arnoldus Hooreman, Hans Christiaan Kelner, and Lourens Ekelboom, in order further through the goodness of Their High Noble Honours to obtain his dismissal to the fatherland. Undersigned, doing which, etc. We, the undersigned head surgeons, declare at the request of the junior merchant Elias Wijts, presently provisional Secretary of the Persian directorship, how we, after performed examination of the above-mentioned, have found, namely, that in the previous year 1734 he fell down from such a height, and by the same fall broke the os femoris on the left side, as well as contused the left hand in such manner that, although after faithful diligence applied by the surgeon Arnoldus Hooreman stationed here, it could not fully be restored, neither the one nor the other, but his left leg remains shortened through the aforesaid fracture and shrunken muscles, as well as the hand, which by its flexor muscles is not capable of that purpose, for the reason that its antagonists or opposing muscles are somewhat shrunken and in proportion thereof dried out, the long confinement to bed and the intemperate air of this region, yea, heat and cold, as well as the lack of certain oils and salves, being the great cause that the above-mentioned cannot possibly be further restored here. Was signed: Arnoldus Hooreman, and Laurens Ekelboom, and Hartman Christiaan Kellenaar. In the margin: Gamron the 2nd of March Anno 1735. After the reading of these documents, the Lord Commander presented that such a petition, according to the positive orders, ought to be addressed directly to Their High Noble Honours at Batavia, and His Honour surrendered to the council what they conscientiously could resolve regarding this. The further members then having assembled together, considering the suppliant not so much for his long-expired contract, but rather because through his lamentable accident he saw himself unable to be of further use to the Honorable Company at this office, and that his request might well be granted, the Lord Commander found himself compelled to confirm this with his vote, trusting however that the obliged respect for the prevailing orders of his High Noble Lords and masters would not thereby be abused or impaired. Whereupon the commissioners who had performed and attended that work in the presence of the Fiscal were called inside, and they having been asked by the said Honorable Commander, as the Fiscal had done beforehand, whether both and each of them separately found themselves in good conscience able to take the oath that they, in accordance with their duty, had in no way erred out of self-interest, nor out of negligence given occasion to the diminution of the value thereof, to which they as well as the Fiscal having candidly answered yes, they stepped outside again at the order of His Honor. From Persia, dated 24 August 1735: Whereupon we shall answer with the requisite respect that it was only on the 5th of this past month that we found ourselves honored with the said commission, and in the meantime have constantly been occupied, particularly the first undersigned, with such a heavy and costly lawsuit before the Honorable Council of Justice of this factory concerning trade in the strictly prohibited spice trade; for which alleged reasons we hope Your Honors will favorably please to pardon us that we have as yet performed nothing regarding our assigned duty, since, as just said, our hands have been constantly full with judicial matters; With which we, awaiting Your Honors' favor, shall ever remain, below stood: Honorable Sir and Honorable Gentlemen, lower: Your Honors' humble and obliged servants, was signed: Willem Meester and E. Meanwhile Jan Willem Niper of Amsterdam, who arrived in India Anno 1734 on the flyboat De Buys as a soldier at ƒ 9, subsequently appointed and upgraded in the same year as third surgeon at ƒ 14, later arriving here in that capacity aboard the vessel Noordwijkerhout, and having been brought ashore not only because of the multitude of sick during this extraordinary rainy season, but also on account of the continuous indisposition of the chief surgeon, and furthermore because of these important reasons that God forbid still persist, he cannot be spared, being moreover a person of vigilance and competence according to testimony and experience, is now at his request advanced to under-surgeon at ƒ 24 per month under a new three-year contract, commencing today. Having finally arrived at the inspection of the samples of claret wine, rose water, and velvets brought to the table for the successively received lists of requirements, it is observed that the same are good in their kind, and according to the testimony of the brokers obtainable in sufficient quantity, except for the velvets of which no more than 4 rolls of a single color and assortment could be procured, which however, although they might be of better quality, shall out of necessity be accepted in reduction of the Honorable Gentlemen's Coromandel requisition, so as not to leave that office entirely destitute thereof; but regarding the other goods, it is resolved, the lowest price having been negotiated, to purchase according to our needs.
