Translation of Persian letter written by the honorable Mr. C. Koenad, Merchant and appointed Director of this Directorate in Persia, to the Tsarist Governor Mostoffa Chan, and sent on the date of 29 July Anno 1735 by his messenger who arrived here the day before yesterday: After the customary compliments, etc. Pensi, under the date 24 August 1735: From Ossil, under the date 24 August 1735. From Pensial, under the date 24 August Anno 1735. From Ceriul, under the date 24 August Anno 1735. Whose continuation I wholeheartedly wish your Excellency. However, regarding what was written by your Excellency to me concerning the claiming of 250 thont from the English interpreter Godja Mattoos for the purchase of some extra fine linen interwoven with gold, ditto shawls, and gilded buckets, all of very good quality of the assortment desired by his Highness Thamas, I felt very much obliged for the good trust that your Excellency was pleased to place in my person in that regard. Consequently, I left no effort untried to secure them, but applied everything possible to that end. Yet to my regret, none of those goods were sent by the wealthy grandees to me, and I do not have a single piece of those goods on hand, nor could any be obtained from outside. It was for those reasons that I also did not claim the aforementioned sum of 250 thons ordered by your Excellency from the named English statesman, the more so because I understood that the small amount previously brought in loco was purchased for your Excellency by that person himself. But regarding the pure friendship existing between your Excellency and me, I assure your Excellency herewith that in the execution of any services for his named Highness and your Excellency, I shall steadfastly continue to the best of my ability without diminution, and that I feed myself day and night with the hope that the friendship both of that Highness and of your Excellency may grow ever more and more. Further, the conclusion with the ordinary compliments. We have duly received two of your letters, dated 20 May and 8 June, the first containing the cost of 90 pieces of both old and young sheep and goats (hereof 69 pieces are accounted for, because an old debt of the moiety of 950 Mahmudis in white money was claimed on the way, which money was paid to your agent, the interpreter Davit Sahid, according to request, and therewith your account for that livestock was liquidated). The purchase price of the wool in your Honor's first letter, from 22 to 21 and even down to 17 thont per maund of the Ghargriese sort, I consider to have become a habit of the merchants in the recent harvest times, as I taste the bitter aftertaste of it in the mouth each time. But your Honor's second letter comforts us better with a purchased quantity of 235 3/4 maunds each at 12 1/4 Mahmudis principal, provided it is of the genuine shearing, whereas the 190 lb of unwashed wool sent hither, amounting with all charges to 1 ditto 457 Mahmudis white (which has also been paid to the aforementioned interpreter to avoid drawing bills of exchange), seems indeed not to be of the best, differing from that of Bolle Kaghole as day from night. From Persia, dated 24 Aug:s A„o 1735: From Persia, dated 24 Aug:s A„o 1735: Ahmed Taqi, the Grand Secretary and Plenipotentiary over all Shiraz, these seven [districts], and Lar, sent to the Sultan of this city Amir Amin Ali, and delivered to me by the said Sultan, to my particular joy, as I was able to ascertain from it Your Right Honourable's victory obtained over the Turks, at which I was imbued with joy as if with a new life, and accordingly in no way failed to thank Almighty God with prayers for that gracious blessing so generously shown and granted to Your Highness, but also to have my thundering artillery fired off as a token of joy to each and everyone, amid heartfelt wishes and fervent prayers offered day and night to the great God by me and all Your Highness's friends, that it may so please the Almighty that Your Highness from day to day may be accompanied with even more good fortune in his undertakings, for which Your Highness then may also destroy and wipe out all his enemies with his brave soldiers with cutting swords, so that Your Right Honourable's subjects may once again live in a peaceful state and also thank God for the grace shown to Your Highness. Translation of a Persian letter written by the Honourable Mr. Carel Hoenad: Merchant and appointed authority of this Direction, dated 30 July A„o 1735, sent to the Plenipotentiary of His Right Honourable Tahmasp Khan and Plenipotentiary of the entire Low Lands, His Excellency Mirza Taqi, and forwarded by his chapar who arrived here on the 27th of this month; After preceding compliments, etc. In the way of sincere friendship, this is written to Your Excellency, informing you that I had the honour to receive in good order, in a fortunate time, the letter sent by Your Excellency to the Captain of the English Company and to me, the contents of which have rejoiced me to the highest degree, partly because I ascertained from it that Your Excellency was still in good health, and partly by the good news mentioned therein concerning the victory obtained by His Highness Tahmasp Khan over the Turk, whereby my countenance was as if illuminated with joy, and I have also not failed to thank Almighty God for that gracious blessing granted to His said Highness; and furthermore, as a sign of that joy, have caused the thundering artillery to be heard to the rejoicing of everyone, amid heartfelt wishes that it may so please God that His often-mentioned Highness's praised name, untiring arm, and cutting sword daily may obtain even more victory over his enemies, whereby they may be entirely destroyed and rooted out. Regarding what was written to me by Your Excellency concerning the war waged at Basra with His Excellency Abdul Latif Khan, it has appeared to me as a surprise, because it is now already more than a year and two months ago since any Company ship, sloop, or vessels have gone from here or from any other place to that region, which is as clear as day to everyone; for which reason no writings have reached me from there, from which the state of that affair might appear to me. It has also now been a long time since the Company's plenipotentiaries residing there have lived quietly and undisturbed, which is also reason to thank Almighty God for His blessing, that no other reports have ever been brought to me from there, than only those that accord with philanthropic friendship. Likewise concerning what Your Excellency wrote regarding the bringing in of merchants into the port with their merchandise and their transport from here to Basra; it is probably not unknown, but indeed abundantly known to the regents of this city, as well as to all the merchants and other residents, that year after year no more than one, or at most two Company ships have arrived in the port, and never has a single merchant nor the value of one pound of their goods been brought with the Company's ships, nor transported from here to other places, except for the Company's goods. From your honors of 5 November of the past year, which was received by us on the 2nd of the same month through the runner named Petrus, having been informed of the attempt regarding a new contract with the great absolute ruler Thamas Chan, which resulted in undertaking the journey to this place by the second interpreter named Hoph Sahid; and since his commission, as well as that of the Duke Lectieffe Chan, has in our opinion turned out nothing but satisfactory, and it being judged necessary to send your honors notice of both matters, we herewith enclose copies of the resolution and translations of everything that transpired, to the end that you may give due attention to the same in the future, and together with us, to the extent of human possibility, watch over them so that the prerogatives, so painstakingly acquired, may not only remain in force, and even Pious discreet: wherewith this is sent, the Company's interest made known, the money as well as the economy remain commended to your honor as well; Concerning the matter regarding the deferred paid monies of Nagha Heemraads, the first signatory of this, after various inquiries, upon your honors' letter, etc., because of their private account among each other, in which he did not judge that he needed to interfere on the Company's behalf, as you did, has finally obtained the settlement, with the holders of the remaining monies of Rds 16, or f 7089.-.-, there being 3 receipts thereof handed to the same for the said amount here, on condition that, if those cash funds before receipt of the same currently sent in this should nevertheless have been paid, the holders of the said Heemraads should again favor them as is proper. Furthermore, it was not unpleasing to us to see that the expenses of this year fell f 1483.8.14 less than the past year, not doubting that such will likewise be agreeable to their High Noble Rigorous Grand Venerablenesses at Batavia, since attending to economy to the utmost possibility has been very earnestly recommended to us all. [illegible] all the indicated reasons and further motives, having rested upon the retiring interpreter Joseph, not to compromise in the bag with him, daily or slightly less than our turns, and likewise regarding the assurances of goodwill following thereupon; wherefore is enclosed a Persian copy of what was written with his approval to His Highness under his own cover by us, to the end of drawing further advantage therefrom in all following developments, since his last statement was that the captain shall from the answer of His High Honour experience with pleasure my affectionate recommendation itself, etc. Having beforehand taken a sample of the previously sent gift goods, and of which as remainder there are among others still left pomecitrons and 10 case bottles of preserves, according to their 4-month extract; regarding which sweetmeats, in the more mentioned assembly of 11 March, it was determined by unanimous votes, because of the spoilage to which they are subject, in case they should still be on hand, to make the same change of master in the most profitable manner, as will appear to Your Honours from the extract thereof, and according to which Your Honours are to regulate yourselves. Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735 From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735 From 4 8 35 brought by messengers, and since in former times the runners were customary to be promised and paid the travel expenses, which are only granted in extraordinary circumstances, whenever such couriers complete the journey within the agreed time and are obliged to do so in 17 or 18 days, we would also have had this fellow paid his wages according to his deserts with blows of a stick for staying so long on the road, in case he had not known how to vindicate himself thoroughly that he was hindered during that time not by illness but otherwise; it will therefore be Your Honor's duty to watch better in the future that the couriers to be sent hither receive their first warning, if they do not wish to undergo, as well here as there, the sensible punishment reserved for them of old. Far from proceeding to the reply to Your Honor's said letter, it has come before us with pleasure the receipt of our letter sent to you on date 16 October of the past year, and Your Honors are thanked for wishing success to the Honorable Commander Leendert de Cleen to obtain a safe voyage, and Damis Heij to a happy administration; but since of the latter his Honor's date of death on 15 June has already been notified, we shall refer to the report given concerning this. For the present, according to the constitution of the times, we live here in good harmony with the regents, and believe that His aforementioned Highness will entirely omit the remaining answer to our letters, which Your Honours presume should have reached us through a certain passed Tjappaar. For the request in this matter could have been made on firmer grounds, and not so easily taken amiss or refused, as being a matter which, we fear, the said Mirza caused himself; and after he had shown himself willing to make compensation, would there not then have been time enough to demand the said 50 tomans remainder?
