The extract from our daily register, which among other things is sent herewith for Your Honours' perusal, will, we hope, be able to show Your Honours, if it pleases, that here since our last of the 6th of July past one has constantly received nothing but conflicting tidings, for of the Shah's restoration and bringing him hither or to Kashan, much has been spoken, and nothing in the least has followed upon it, of which we also firmly believe nothing will come in the future; yet we wish from the heart to be mistaken therein, so that the realm may attain peace through his freedom, whereto with the present government there appears to be no prospect, because it is still uncertain whether peace will be made with the Turk or not; and if it is the truth that the Duke may have aimed at Basra, and that he, as circulating rumours bring, has marched in person to Georgia, then it is notorious that regarding a peace nothing will have been advanced; but that the Turk makes not the least movement either, so one cannot thoroughly fathom that matter; and we can communicate to Your Honours with just as little certainty about the negotiation between the Russian nation and the same, but only the latest reports want that the Muscovite still to the [illegible] binds under

From Persia, dated 24 August in the year 1735: we cannot refrain from expressing our obliged thanks to Your Honours, as is hereby done, both for the favourable approval of the specifications for the months of March, April, May, and June, and for debiting the pay accounts of the bookkeeper Leijpsigh and provisional assistant Buffkens for the good months enjoyed by them, and furthermore for the reimbursement of Mamoodis 6941:= or ƒ 2949:18: 8 to the Honourable Company's broker Hemraads Tetmillan, on account of the money advanced here by his proxy Sondeldaar for the charges of this office; for which then, according to custom, in favour of the main office Gamron, that broker's account has been debited, so that the four-monthly extract of our running trade journal being annexed hereto, will be able to demonstrate this to Your Honours' pleasure, while we hope that the same will be found to agree regarding the entries that one has had in common since 1 September to the last of October past with the Ispahan books, and we can well assure Your Honours, and further promise, that it has always been our intention, and will ever be, to observe in all matters the frugality so highly commanded, and never to proceed to the giving of presents otherwise than when the same shall most urgently require it, and that one shall thereby be able to obtain advantage for the Honourable Company, which indeed is the principal aim. A large quantity having been requested, and we having selected the very best of that lot and sent it to the interpreter Ebrahim Sahied, he returned the same to us by the aforementioned interpreter, who at the same time brought report that one of the most renowned physicians of this city had been summoned by the said Ibrahim Beg, and the root having been shown to him, he had said that one would do much better to throw the radix into the fire and burn it to ashes than to have anyone make use of it, for it would sooner cause harmful effects in this climate than serve to benefit any human being. Whereupon the interpreter, making a very displeased face, pretended as if no better could have been procured in the city. Thus we are now at a loss with it, since, when anyone else asks for it, we will not be able to present anything, and also, according to the assurances of the Banyan Sendeldas, there will never be any buyers found to whom one might pass off this root. We therefore await Your Honours' orders in this regard, whether to return the same by occasion, or to leave it here as it is. In the meantime, we take the liberty of sending Your Honours, via the bearer of this, a piece of a root known by that name, as it is used and brought here, sewn in an unbleached piece of cloth, so that, if any of such assortment can be found by Your Honours, or if [illegible], you may send us such a quantity as we previously had permission for 30 man in the year 1732, with which we will meanwhile be able to satisfy the desirous and make them well-disposed toward us. Regarding the letter sent to the late and present authority together, dated 17 June last, to the bookkeeper of Leipzig concerning the lending of two Company ships for the purpose of subduing the hostile Arabs, specially charted, the proper deliberation was complied with by the said Leipzig on 25 July following, by occasion of English couriers, and sent to Your Honours. Having also received, among others, with the aforementioned honored letter of Your Honours, a sealed golden package containing the native writings addressed to Lord Thamas Khan, and Your Honours having been pleased to commend the secure delivery thereof to our care: We therefore serve in response that, for a considerable time after receiving those writings, we were never able to obtain certain news of His Highness's place of residence, as the extract from our daily register accompanying this will, if Your Honours please, be able to show; and also that we did not wish to put them in danger of being lost by the departure of a chappar, we were able to dispatch the same—along with our letter to the treasurer Mirza Mhamed, accompanied by our testimonial letters, of which copies and translations lie enclosed herein for Your Honours' perusal—no earlier than on the 11th of January last, by occasion of the departure of one Agamhames, an official of Lord Thamas Khan. Through this, we hope the writings will enjoy an undoubted delivery, while we furthermore live in the confidence that a favorable report will follow upon both matters through the intercession of the aforementioned friend of the Honourable Company, the said Lord Mirza Mhamed, and that thereby all those anxious threats will cease. We do not doubt but that the bearer of our letter dated the 5th of November will have brought Your Honours safely in that same month our closed books of the said past period. However, we thank Your Honors hereby for the settlement of that known matter concerning the remaining monies in the sum of Mamoodies 60.- or f 7089:—: whereof the three receipts have also duly reached us to our obligation, and with which the holders have also remained content, provided that those monies are paid at Coast by the said Heemaards, because here on the Company's side no satisfaction could be given to those people. From Persia, dated 24 August 1735 To our joy, the safe arrival at the local roadstead of the ship and the yacht Valkenisse and Noorderkwaad ter Hout has come before us; and since by Your Honor's third letter of 1 April, on account of the received honored and respected superior orders of Their Right Excellencies, it was conveyed more fully to them, and that we also, out of duty, have received along with it extracts of those highly esteemed orders concerning this trading post, we hold Your Honor's aforesaid second letter answered herewith. And proceeding now to the reservation of the latter, we say at the outset that, pursuant to those highly respected orders concerning the toll and the contract to which Thamas Chan had made his objection, it shall always be observed by us according to our dutiful obligation to manage that matter, as far as lies within our power, with the utmost prudence until such time as the throne shall be ascended by him or by the legitimate heir. In the meantime, we cannot fail to request Your Honor most humbly herewith, in your first outgoing letter to Their Right Excellencies, to express our very submissive thanks for Their Right Excellencies' gracious permission granted regarding the previous year's advance made by us, validated upon Your Honor's instructions, and that you please assure them that the bookkeeper Van Zeijp only gave in to passing the well-known and so disadvantageous deed of obligation regarding the claim of the three-part toll goods when he was virtually compelled to the utmost. For in the attached annex to our humble letter of 12 October 1732, dated 24 October following, it can be viewed amply among other things where the Gollofa, Minja Kaffie, answered that bookkeeper, upon his multiple prior remonstrations and promises of acknowledgment if the affair were saved by him, etcetera—indeed in the very same terms that were also truly described at that time—that if he, Van Zeijp, were to offer much more resistance against the Duke's desires, the matter would then end very badly, as the Duke is accustomed to act with great severity; wherefore he, the Gollofa, advised him, the bookkeeper, to write such a paper briefly in order thereby to give some satisfaction to him, the Chan. For he further said that if he, Van Zeijp, were to offer much resistance regarding the passing of such a document, the Duke would certainly have it extracted with blows of a cane. This has become sufficiently evident from the consequences of that affair, and the same was also communicated from here by letter of 22 March 1734 to Gamron in short: namely, that the Russian Resident Semen Avramov was the driving force behind the examination of the Company's privileges, since his objective was, through one pretext or another that he could invent in this manner, to paint the Dutch Company black enough before the mighty Thamas Shah. Couriers are therefore frequently obliged to stop and leave the common road to fetch their necessities from one village or another situated far off the way, which of necessity must make the journey take longer; and concerning the promise of premiums, it is certain that in former times one did not give them except on extraordinary occasions, which now ought the more to be observed for the sake of economizing, as this has been highly recommended to us in every respect, and should be adhered to. Wherefore it were to be wished that one could again obtain such swift couriers as in those good times, for we can assure Your Honors that not long ago a courier dared to demand 300 from us merely to make the journey here in 18 days; whereby the wretched condition of the times, among other things, being sufficiently apparent, we nevertheless promise Your Honors to perform our duty in this matter as faithfully as possible. Since January of the year 1731 no hand has been laid on the customary repairs of this lodge, owing to the changes that have arisen in affairs here, and now it is most urgently required, in order to prevent further dilapidation, that this be attended to. The master mason, after inspecting the premises, has declared that to remedy matters one will require 10 to 150 or 67:10 and in all 488:15, as the copy of the declaration enclosed herewith will, if it please Your Honors, more circumstantially show. We therefore very obediently request that we may be granted permission to undertake the same. The bookkeeper of Zuipzigh, taking this opportunity to address an humble petition to Your Honors for their High Excellencies the Supreme Indian Government, very politely requests Your Honors to be pleased to send the same along with their reports to that main place by the first dispatch, and at the same time to have the goodness to support his plea with your favorable recommendation, so that he may at last, after a stay of 19 years, obtain his discharge from this so harmful factory and be admitted to service and employment there. This is also augmented by another petition which the provisional assistant David Buffkins has requested us to present to Your Honors, wherein he makes an humble request that upon the expiration of his time he may be promoted to full assistant with the salary pertaining thereto, for it is hardly possible to subsist on so small a wage. We therefore join our request to his to obtain that promotion for him from Your Honors, as he has, since his arrival from there, spent his time in the service to complete satisfaction; wherefore we hope Your Honors will be pleased to favor him with further promotion. A current price list of merchandise, accompanying this as usual, will show Your Honors the very low prices for goods at present, which is caused by the very slight demand for them and the great scarcity of money here in this city, which is indeed grievous to us and were to be wished otherwise. It has also been learned that an order from the present ruler of this realm is said to be coming to strike new copper money of 5 matticaal 8 pieces unweighed, which will then have to pass for 2 pice, being thus one matticaal more than those minted in former times, and which for a short time were current for one pice; with which, if it proceeds, he will make a small profit, for undoubtedly an order will follow to accept the former double pice, as said, for only 1, which are presently still current, and to melt them down, besides which [illegible] chests of them will apparently be collected. Meanwhile, at the beginning of the reign of the late Sultan Hossein, work was diligently undertaken at some silver mines situated 2, 3, and 8 miles from here to discover whether one could succeed there; however, the material having been worked and a test made thereof, instead of profit there has been a loss, both on account of the daily wages paid to the miners and what was spent on fuel. That the news here still continues to be as precarious as previously, the extract of our detailed account accompanying this will among other things be able to show Your Honour if desired, wherefore referring to that for the most part, we shall nevertheless briefly insert here that according to all appearances no peace will yet be concluded between the Turk and this duke. Some indeed allege that he (perhaps at the instigation of the Muscovites) will not neglect to do so, yet if we are to believe others, the Ottoman would stubbornly insist that he would very gladly make peace with the king of the country, but would never settle matters with him, which latter is indeed sooner to be believed than the former, for it is assured that the Turkish general Abdulla Bassia has gathered a considerable army together at Kars, a few mansils situated above Erivan, being the border place of that warring nation, to bring into the field against the obstinate Persian, and against whom the Lord Thamas Chan would then also have marched, so that the news of the good or bad success of the battle for one or the other party is presumed to have to arrive here at the latest after the lapse of a month, although some others maintain he would have gone to the relief of the Lord Tramjan, who is closely surrounded by the Turks at and around Tiflis, the capital of Georgia, against which it is said by other commanders that he has come down toward Tabriz in order to await the grand army there, as it is on the march from that side, in order to deliver a general battle. Meanwhile, according to the current news, Ahmed Pasha has again been restored in his government of Baghdad, and an embassy has been sent by him to His Highness, but to what end the same is, has not been learned, and further rumours will have it that the Arabs have captured Basra, the Persians called thereupon thither, and have put that place into their hands, but as we shall have more certain reports of this from Shiraz to Bushire, we do not wish to find ourselves here upon the uncertainty thereof. And the tyrant, as we have been told, is said to have adopted a habit of saying almost every day to the people that he is indeed a staff of the king, and he will surely restore him, but such may well be one of his greatest hypocrisies, to seek to appease the people therewith and keep them in a good humour so that they would not meanwhile fall into mutiny.
