Casual, under date 24 August, Anno 1735. Consul, under date 24 August, Anno 1735. English interpreter Josep Honmet, having dispatched a runner on the Kierman route to your parts, did not want to fail to send Your Honour this letter, principally to make known that the second of Chiraas and plenipotentiary of His Highness Mirza Taggie, according to what was set down for us in the postscript of that letter, undertook the journey to the court late in the evening of that very day. And having received a mandate from the post-rider of Thamas Chan at Mortjagoor, situated 14 to 15 miles from here, he returned here yesterday. We then, as customary, had him welcomed again through the interpreter Elias Sahad with the presentation of a tray of confectionery. In expressing his pleasure at this, he also sought to report that he had learned from the primary courtiers of that lord that the Duke had written him a very polite mandate, and thereby ordered him to return to his government again, and only send his writing to the court, from whom he himself, acting as his or the Mirza's proxy, would make demands. Which he also immediately sent there with the books and further notes, along with some rich presents. And the Duke had, among other things, said that he would come to meet Mirza Taggie at Kassen, if he did not summon him there, and that he would undertake the journey from here to his post at Chiraas tomorrow, and the bookkeeper Van Dijpzig, provided it will not be an inconvenience to that lord, will pay him a courteous visit tomorrow, in order to request the continuation of his powerful favour toward the Company, which we hope will meet with Your Honour's approval. Meanwhile, regarding the person of Aga Taker, who, as we informed Your Honour by the aforementioned letter, was supposedly appointed Shabandar of the lower lands, nothing more has been heard, so we presume that what was said was not true. Likewise, concerning Mhamed Lotteff Chan's dismissal, it was a pure Persian lie; for the aforementioned interpreter Rasstalud, having been sent out on the third of this month to wish the aforementioned Mirza Taggie good luck on his journey to the court, reported to us upon his return that he had heard from that lord himself that Captain Mhamed Lottef Chan has gone to Bassouwe to wrest that place from the Turks, which gives us certainty of his continuation in his office, especially since his government of the said territory [illegible] to rule, which caused that lord to suffer greatly. And finally, we can still inform Your Honour that the town's Banians here received tidings that Lofgie Sorgaas, having fully recovered, was reportedly on the move again to capture that place together with the entire province of Codrwaen, if possible. Coming from the said Mirza Taggie, and it is said that Mirza Fiesa, who was expected here daily as vakil, according to further incoming reports has travelled past this city onward to Kierman, since the Duke reportedly changed his mind regarding his person later on and appointed him vizier of that place again. Furthermore, we cannot report any other news to Your Honour at present, except that it is unanimously said that Lord Thamas Chan has certainly marched upward against the Turks, and according to a runner from the camp of the aforementioned who arrived inside this city a few days ago, he had taken barely 12000 selected men with him, which to us does not seem very plausible, though it is attributed to his dauntlessness, and we will await the certain truth thereof in the course of time. Meanwhile, according to the account of that courier, there is a great dearth regarding all food provisions in the camp, while also, due to the terrible stench of the perished horses and other beasts, a sort of pestilence began among the troops. Having this to inform Your Honour at this time, we commend Your Honour, together with the entire precious state of the Honourable Company in these regions, to good and safe protection, remaining further, after our very humble greetings, with all respect, Your Honour's most humble, dutiful, and obedient servants. To the Honorable Gentleman, Merchant and appointed Commander over the Honorable Company's important trade and business in the empire of Persia, Carel Koenad. Strict, Most Wise, Very Discrete, Provident, and Very Generous Gentleman, Commanding Gentleman. By our recent respectful letter of the 8th of this month to Your Honor via the route from Kirman by address of the English interpreter Joseph Hermet in all submission sent, the duplicate being attached, Your Honor in the absence of the original will be able to learn the contents thereof, to which end we have dispatched those lines to Your Honor. Referring ourselves thereto, this letter will now serve to certify to Your Honor that the day after the arrival in the afternoon, having paid a visit to the governor of the Lord Thamas Bank and all the lower lands of Shiraz, the Lord Mirza Taghi, he received and greeted us with all tokens of friendship. And since the Bookkeeper Van Leipzig that same morning had received a pertinent letter from the Honorable Commander Carel Koenad, from which it appeared that a certain Jafar Ali Beg, court master of His Highness at Costij, had arrived as ambassador for Debal, with a friendly request to both nations to lend their ships for his transport etc. thither, along with the answer given by His Honor in that regard, that the monsoon had expired for that purpose, etc.: so the said Bookkeeper did not fail to use that very favorable opportunity to present the necessary points regarding that matter to that lord, namely that the season had already expired two months ago, and it was therefore very dangerous to undertake that voyage out of season, just as His Honor was well aware, for having been to Costij about it they had learned the certainty thereof from the former Ambassador the Khan Ali Mardan Khan, who was currently present here at the court, who also desired to give a true account in this regard, since he knew from experience how perilous it is to venture out to sea out of season, as had happened to him when a few years ago, with the small ship the Maria Laurentia, given to him upon his repeated insistence and at the request of the other regents there for his transport to Debal, he had undertaken that voyage. For having scarcely left the gulf and advanced to the latitude of Debal, he was driven back by a terrible gale, and finally after losing one of the masts came to anchor at Muscat, and shortly thereafter returned to Costij, etc. For all which reasons we then also told His Honor that it would be in the highest degree desirable if, through his writing to His Highness by an order, that sending of ships might be postponed, so that thereby all misfortunes that one has reason to fear might be avoided. Whereupon the said Mirza Taghi was pleased to reply that, being already informed, he had also not failed to petition the necessary points from Costij itself to His Excellency regarding this, and had been so fortunate as to succeed therein according to his wish, as with the latest chapar to Mortjagar he had accepted an agreement thereof to defer that voyage until the approaching monsoon. And that he had communicated this to the one and the other, with the further offer that if the Bookkeeper Van Leipzig had a runner ready to dispatch a further order in that regard, saying that it was very possible that his chapar might arrive prematurely through some unexpected occurrences, as soon as a courier could complete the voyage, so that the said Jafar Ali Beg being promptly informed thereof, he would not trouble Your Honor any further on that affair. Which friendly offer we also embraced, and having further requested him to have the goodness to honor us, under the assurance that we without delay would immediately dispatch that order with a runner, he was pleased thereupon to promise to have a letter prepared to that end for the aforementioned Jafar Ali Beg, and one for Ahmad Jafar Beg. As he in our presence also ordered his Chief Scribe, Agha Jafar, and subsequently as His Honor began to converse with the well-known Chief Merchant Haji Zain al-Abidin, we at once used the time to our advantage, by representing to him that for the tranquility of trade it was very necessary that this troublemaker be removed, because commerce suffered greatly through his constant agitation and intrigues, and it therefore

Casul under date 24 Aug: 1735 From Persia under date 24 Aug:st A„o 1735: 2 1205. and might finally resolve to abandon those regions entirely, which would then undoubtedly cause great damage to this realm, etc. And we received a joyful answer thereto from His Hon., that he had also managed to bring it about with His High Hon. through pure and proper measures that this man has now been deprived of his office and explicitly ordered to let the European continue to conduct his trade unmolested; as also Mirza Taghi in that interest likewise had written an order to Haji Papuela and would send it to us for further dispatch, for which courtesy we also thanked him very kindly. And the time having further been spent with various conversations, we finally took His Hon.'s leave, and returning to the Lodge received two baskets of sugar confectionery sent by His Hon. to the oft-mentioned van Zeypzig. Whereupon the same, the following day or the 10th current, did us the honor in person to come to this Hon. Company's dwelling, who then, having been received and entertained with all courtesy after the country's manner, and conforming to the Hon. Company's honor, with the serving of three trays of similar good things and the presentation of [illegible] and genuine rosewater. And in the meantime, the Hon. Josep Sules arrived here this morning, still early and exhausted from the journey, and he related to us how to Lar, for his baggage and the drinks etc. sent hither by Your Hon., someone against former custom had claimed toll or vexatious exactions, but that he had nevertheless overcome the same through firm opposition, declaring that it is indeed to be feared that trouble will completely be made thereof in the future, and it would therefore not be amiss if we, having from the so often mentioned Mirza Taghi full authority here as well as over all the lower lands, could, for the maintenance of the Hon. Company's privileges as much as possible at this time according to our bounden duty, give that gentleman the necessary information in this regard and at the same time request him to provide therein, so that the Hon. Company may, by his favor, continue unhindered to enjoy its prerogatives in these lands. Whereupon we have also obtained from him such an order as Your Hon. will be able to see from the translation thereof, accompanied by an authentic Persian copy enclosed among others herein, and to which we refer with all respect, as also happens regarding what was written to the aforesaid ambassador, for the [illegible] and Chief. Company's local servants there from all exactions—because, according to the report made by the said interpreter Josep Sules, people there came to bother them now and then—have also requested an open letter regarding this from here and, having obtained the same, put it into effect with another ditto to the Shahbandar there, the Lord Mirza Mohammad, to assist the Company against the people who might be neglectful in paying their debts to the Company and its servants, so that the translations, in copy of local papers (holding the originals for a further occasion) being also transmitted herewith, will be able to demonstrate to Your Hon., and to the contents of which we humbly refer for the sake of brevity. Meanwhile, as these favors were certainly not to be acquired without a small gift, we have also had to resolve at this time to show our gratitude somewhat for his courtesies to this gentleman—who, besides this, was nearly carried on hands here by everyone and is held in the highest regard on account of his great credit with the present ruler of the country—and thereby completely oblige him and cause him to persevere in his friendship toward the Hon. Company. For which purpose a sum of ƒ49: 3: 5: has then been employed, as well in spices, fine cloth, and confections, a striking pocket watch, and white loaf sugar, which, being purchased from the Hon. Thus and further it is related that at Resht and further places situated in those regions, since receipt of the news of the death of the aforesaid resident, they have caused the tolls and other duties to be demanded from all the Moslem merchants and also caused the same to be paid by them, the tolls on the brought and transported goods by the merchants who had already departed from there before that event, while his highness would likewise have expressed that he would tolerate no other resident of that nation here, which indeed will not come very amiss to the Honorable Company, because with the residence of those peoples one continuously has nothing to expect but expenses. From 8 Before the departure of this, we came further to learn that an Armenian courier has arrived from the Ambassador at Julfa, and the Armenians and others have received with him the news of how the Pasha there, having forced the English (over which there is indeed much laughter) to hand over two ships to him, he crammed them with men, and therewith had driven Mohamed Latif Khan to flight, and also that the Persian returned to Bushire, having reported that event from there to our lord Tahmas Khan, whose drum beat likewise currently gives again the word of Shah Tahmas, namely that he will definitely be brought to Isfahan; yet what does it help in that manner, since he himself remains an imprisoned man, and meanwhile it is doubted by many that the latest victory gained by the Duke over the Turk is so noteworthy. On the 30th of the recently passed month of May, the accompanying small chest, in its present condition, was made ready to be delivered that same afternoon on board the ship Royal George, whereupon our supercargo, Mr. Cradock, advised that it would be better to hold said small chest until further opportunity, as it is very apparent. From It seemed the Pasha of this place not only desired to force those vessels, but also the Danish frigate likewise lying in the roadstead here, into opposition against the designs of the Persians, who with a naval force of two grabs, one gallivat, and about 40 vessels crammed with troops had already advanced into the vicinity of the island of Kharg (6 miles situated from here), with the intention of suddenly attacking the city of Basra and, if possible, destroying it, in which said Persians in all likelihood would certainly have succeeded had not the English gentlemen, upon the repeated, urgent, indeed very sharply pressing instances of the Pasha and all the principal inhabitants, finally resolved, for the prevention of that undertaking, to prepare their ships for actual violent resistance, to embark the commanded Turkish troops with their weapons and provisions, and the next day to send them off to encounter the Persian fleet, being joined with 14 galleys under command of the Captain Pasha as admiral of the Turkish armada, which nevertheless would have contributed very little to the destruction of the enemy’s enterprises had they not been assisted and led by the said two English vessels, as the remembrance of the latest catastrophe suffered in the attack against the Arabs still keeps the Turks plunged in such dispiritedness that they truly can show no sign of bravery or courage anymore; whereby the full honor of the victory gained on this occasion is indisputably to be attributed to the English, by which undoubtedly that nation in particular, and the Europeans in general, must increase in respect and esteem with the Turks, just as from now on gratitude already appears to have made some impression on their minds, considering they openly affirm that the continued preservation of the city and inhabitants must essentially be thanked to European courage. True it is that the English had entered a multitude of protests against the borrowing of the ships, and also that they were threatened with the utmost persecution and even seizure by force; but it can on the other hand also be certain that vigorous countermines and caused damage will in time likewise be revenged, and they may perhaps be forced to evade the predominant thirst for revenge of Tahmas Qoli Khan by a timely retreat from the Persian realm, for from what is heard everywhere of that irascible nature, he must not be a man to leave such suffered scorn unavenged. From Persia, under date 24 August 1735 would have been, in case this bottom, or else another, had departed even a few days later, since by way of obligatory response to both your Honors' highly respected letters of 24 January and 21 February of this year, several sheets of paper had already been brought into draft; however, not yet in such a manner that they could presently be dispatched otherwise than incompletely or only partially, as there is much to report not only for a full reply to the aforementioned two honored missives, but also with regard to the state and interests of the Honorable Company at this office in general, as will appear to your Honors in due time upon a closer opportunity and more extended reports; and we shall then, with honored permission, quote here only briefly in the manner of an extract from the prepared draft sheets at hand that our trade books were closed in due time, with a neat net profit for our highly respected masters of f 52264.17.-, and that after deduction of all burdens and charges. And although that money was indeed present in specie and exchanged for desired coins, the uncommon shortness of time would nevertheless prevent us from sending off the same this voyage along with the books and further annexes belonging thereto; just as, for the same reason, we are unable to write at length regarding the distressed, poor state of the Honorable Company's broker Moeltjent, and that in which that man has so innocently and unheard of plunged us before his dealings, because he, instead of exchanging all the Honorable Company's money he held under his care for the said species, employed it to satisfy the debts left behind here by the late former Honorable Senior Merchant and Persian Authority Dames Heij, which together, both in principal and interest, will amount to more than three thousand thomans, and of which we shall endeavor to provide a pertinent accounting by the next occasion, as we are still laboring to trace as accurately as possible what kind of and to whom the said late Mr. Heij had incurred these notable debts. Persia, dated 24 August 1735 From Persia, dated 24 August 1735 however it appears as if those disputes, through the death of the aforementioned Mhamed Mana, who fell in battle by a bullet, are about to be settled and a peace concluded upon it, which is greatly to be wished, as on the contrary, undoubtedly the roads will remain so closed in every way by the Arabs that no merchant will be in a position to travel with any goods. Finally, we will add here in passing that the fine cloths have been sold at 20 mamoodies or ƒ 8:10:— per ell, which, after deduction of toll, brokerage, and loss on exchange, yields an advance of 29¼ per cent, we testifying that it was impossible for us to stipulate a single penny more for them, and this price, according to the condition of the times, may well be considered exceptionally high, since the English and French cloths, of which some are better than ours, are currently sold here at no higher than 18, 18½, and 19 mamoodies, while the other or coarser sort of cloths still remains resting in the warehouses. Furthermore, since our last humble letter, there have been entirely sold all the seclas, amberkas, mulmuls, sawaspurs, ginghams, drangams, and camphor, together with very little, and of some of the further trade goods on hand nothing at all, because since the accession of the aforementioned Pasha no trade worth mentioning has been carried on, since that self-seeking character from the beginning of his rule until the present day has always been at odds with the Arabs, and thus by those and other dealings has frightened the merchants away from trade; he also lately attempted an attack against the English locally, wishing to constrain them to unload their three ships lying in the roads, and subsequently pay the duties on the goods according to their custom, or else, upon further refusal of his demand, he would constrain them to depart from here, or pay 9 per cent altogether, just as the Turkish, Armenian, and other merchants are accustomed to contribute; but that Lord Pasha, to his own shame, had to withdraw his hand from that business, since the consul of that nation, Mr. Martin French, de facto requested the supercargoes of those vessels to go on board, make their ships ready to sail, and assured them that he would follow them that very same evening in case that dispute were not settled to his liking before sunset; which indeed actually happened, considering the aforementioned consul not only returned with robes of honor from the Pasha, but moreover obtained a firman in confirmation of the previous custom of 3 per cent toll on the goods to be brought by them, subsequently the blame for all differences being cast by the Pasha upon the English interpreter for having misunderstood and not conveyed the messages back and forth according to the truth, whereupon it then subsequently remained on the previous footing, under promise of friendship. Please, therefore, take these matters into consideration and regulate affairs accordingly. — Our books are to be debited in favor of Your Honors' Company with the amount of the sent writing materials to the sum of ƒ9. 14., for the provision of which we express our most humble respect and thanks, although the same, or the large-format paper, arrived somewhat too late to have the second set of our books copied. — Concerning the absconded Chief Mate Jan Schrader, we shall undertake the necessary inquiries and efforts toward his apprehension, and having succeeded therein, send him bound over to Your Honors; yet, as it appears to us, there will not be much prospect of that occurring here, as we were given to understand that this fugitive took his chance by retreating to Bengal, so we must further await whether such is true or not. From Persia, dated 24 August 1735 from the heart, hereby to offer our most affectionate congratulations, beseeching Heaven that it may please to grant His Honour, for that illustrious and no less delicate charge, such strength, health, and steadfastness as are required for the upholding of such weighty burdens in these perilous and confused times, so that the Honourable Company, through His Honour's wise governance and unflagging zeal, may enjoy the fruits that may reasonably be presumed and anticipated therefrom. Furthermore, we likewise take the honour of extending our felicitations with regard to the other gentlemen, both the former and the most recently arrived members of the political council, such as the Honourable Mr. Cornelis Engelsen to the office of provisionally appointed Trade Bookkeeper; Mr. Michael Heijnitsz. to that of provisionally appointed Warehouse Keeper, notwithstanding it has appeared to us that His Honour, due to his departure for Cochin, is not to occupy the same for long, but in His Honour's place Mr. Jacob Pollart; furthermore, as Fiscal, and by Their High Mightinesses at Batavia elected as such, the Junior Merchant Mr. Willem Meester; item as provisional Secretary of the Council of Policy, Mr. Elias Nuijts, and as His Honour's Adjunct, Mr. Jan Bout; and finally as ordinary Commissioner of the Company's warehouses, Mr. Dirk de Haan. We have therefore, according to Your Honours' wise instructions, already entered that purchase amount of ƒ 976: 19: into our books on the account of prior year's profit and loss in favour of the Head Office, as well as the improperly charged toll money with which the same remained burdened upon dispatch, amounting to ƒ 844: 17:, as was done in like manner with the aforementioned 104 lb of short-found cinnamon to the value of ƒ 58: 11:, both in purchase and toll calculations, and finally also with a sum of ƒ 459: - with which the mace was also burdened for toll rights upon return; hoping that in this regard we have grasped Your Honours' esteemed desire and dutifully observed it. ccal under date 24 August From Persia under date 24 August 1735 Concerning the broker Moelsent with such circumstantial circumstances and dependencies thereof, there is so much to report that we shall use a separate section for this and direct it to the clarification of what Your Honours necessarily ought to be informed of, in order for Your Honours to express their wise sentiments thereon in due time. However, we can say in advance that the state and circumstances of the man would by no means permit him to be allowed to depart from here for the present, even though he were already licensed through Your Honours' kindness for his arrival further thither, because a multitude of notable inconveniences indeed compel him to remain in loco until such time as an equitable expedient shall be devised by Your Honours and ordered unto us how he shall be dealt with, according to the merits of what is to be disclosed more fully hereafter. But concerning the appointment of another broker in his place, we pray at present not only to remain exempt from the selection thereof, but that Your Honours may be so good as to appoint such a person provided with the required capacity, means, and credit for that purpose, as Your Honours with far greater and more prudent foresight over there could do than we here; wherefore we shall not take the liberty to propose anyone from these places to Your Honours for that purpose, in order not to fall through an error a second time into such a labyrinth and anxieties as those into which we at present, through the conduct of the old Moeltjent (God amend it), have been plunged as innocently as unforeseen.
