It would have been wholeheartedly wished that the clearing of trade goods had been of such good progress as commencement, so that, according to Your Honors' well-founded opinion, one had been relieved of a lot of merchandise with which the warehouses are as yet still encumbered; however, had the peace between the Porte and the Persian been genuinely concluded and had no three English ships appeared here in the past autumn, it might possibly have been of considerably better success for the Honorable Company, considering the arrival of a multitude of Surat and Bengal linens, with some other goods, brought us a notable disadvantage in trade, since those private merchants let their wares go for such small prices that no merchant made the slightest effort to purchase any of ours, so that both Your Honors' and our good expectation in Cassubsiat was thereby frustrated; yet not so much or hopeless that, under heaven's blessing, no change for the better could return, but that will require some time, which must redress the currently so confused affairs on this coast through a peaceful government as well as otherwise, which we desire with all earnestness and eagerness to live to see soon. From Persia, dated 24 August 1735 From Persia, dated 24 August 1735 As regards the small profit obtained on the checlas at the price of 12 mamoodies the piece, or the same for which they were sold there, as well as Your Honors' displeasure in this regard, we have to assure Your Honors seriously that they could not have been sold higher, since the late Mr. Commander Heij had already set that price on them before His Honor's departure from here, and it proves almost impossible to persuade the merchants so far as to raise the same, but indeed on the contrary they exert all their power to lower the same, to which we have, however, thus far not consented on any of the established prices; but we indeed hope now that as soon as trade again gets underway even in the least, we shall apply all our efforts toward their increase, as we desire to be able to demonstrate in the near future, for it is certain that the more advantages we manage to procure for our highly feared and respected Lords Principals, the more we thereby contribute to our duty; and since both of these motives are constantly pursued by us, Your Honors may please also be assured that we shall not fail to succeed therein through all diligence and vigilance according to our ability, as well as in the observation of the so repeatedly recommended frugality, in which respect, to our knowledge, we have not committed the slightest excess up to now, as Your Honors will be able to verify from the following comparison, since between the latest closed financial year 1734 and the previous one of 1733, for the alleged reasons, no greater difference to the worse has turned out than an amount of ƒ 3124: 3: -, which we hope will be regarded as passable by Your Honors. As soon as the roads between here and Aleppo are in any way safely passable without danger, we shall make it our first task to forward the obtained writings for the Fatherland as quickly as possible, either by caravan or by express hired couriers, with all accompanying and necessary letters of advice, which could not be done until today because all the roads around here are so disrupted by the Arabs that no one dares to venture half a mile outside the gates, for reasons as will be explained in more detail below and can be examined in extension in the journal kept by us, which is also annexed hereto in copy under No. 8, praying very reverently to be permitted to conduct ourselves accordingly. Regarding further knowledge of the virtues and properties that ought to accompany assa foetida, the same declarant states that he knows as little about it as anyone who in his life has never seen that devil's dung; and likewise he has never been asked or presented with the question whether it could be or how it ought to be traded. However, as the declarant still recalls, the then Chief Surgeon Ernst Christiaan Harrigers was always meddled with those matters of approval or disapproval, to whom knowledge thereof might also be supposed with far more foundation, as being a drug often used in his shop, so that he consequently would best know how to distinguish its virtue from its defect. Further the burdened party will add nothing more here than his humble request to Their High Excellencies, the High Indian Government, with the most humble plea that Your Honours may be pleased to exercise the kindness of sending the same, reinforced with Your Honours' favourable recommendation, to Batavia at the first opportunity, in order to await what Their High Excellencies are well pleased to dispose in this regard, and to what extent their grace will deign to extend over my integrity in the case at hand. On the other hand, we have noted with singular pleasure that Your Honours had made an initial start on the dispatch of the ship Noordwijkerhout with a firm cargo hither, which, according to the entire course of events, will have taken effect even before the appearance of this letter, since the Pasha seems greatly inclined toward a peace with the desert Arabs, with whom he has lived in a continuous dispute virtually from the beginning of his reign. This was so persistent and notorious that, after confiscating all his movable and immovable goods to the amount of, so it is said, 3500 bags at 22 1/4 thomans each, amounting in total to 78750 thomans, he caused the powerful and well-known Sheikh Annes to be strangled. This compelled the likewise renowned Sheikh Mhamad Mana, out of fear that something similar might befall him, to stay among his nation in the desert, and there, as well as hereabouts, to inflict so much damage by all kinds of robbery and raids in revenge, until the Pasha finally resolved to send out against him all his readily available and newly recruited troops, consisting of about 600 heads of both cavalry and infantry, under the command of his own kethuda, or second-in-command, together with the Janissary Agha. These marched on 20 March of the current year in divided troops toward the encampment of the aforementioned Sheikh Mhamad Mana, situated near the village called Jesa here, located close to the river Euphrates. And after the deployment of some so-called redoubts, or after an interval of 3 to 4 days, they fought a brave battle, wherein the grand, if not foolhardy, Turks suffered a total defeat and the Arabs achieved a complete victory and possession of the battlefield, with about 500 men having fallen on the spot on the side of the former, and of the latter perhaps barely five. Thus, the few remaining Janissaries and Pasha's musketeers returned almost naked, bare, stripped of their weapons, and the little remnant of cavalry without horses, likewise leaving behind both their aforementioned army commanders and further all their tents, ammunition, and other baggage. From Persia under date 24 August 1735 ... without the least resistance, according to their own desire, because the defeat among these peoples has now made such an impression of fear upon their minds that the very name of the Arabs could compel them to flee and make way. In the beginning, or after the return of this defeated and completely ruined host, the Pasha seemed willing to exercise some stubborn vigilance over the matter. But perceiving his power to be too slight and the courage of the Arabs too formidable, it finally appears as if, upon the advice of the most capable merchants and other townsmen, he is willing to be moved to an accommodation and a binding peace. This is in order to allow his subjects to enjoy a pleasant tranquility and the merchants a flourishing trade; which may God soon be pleased to bring about in that irritable and covetous mind, so that the commerce, so long altered and practically entirely dead due to these troubles, may now attain that success for which there appeared such fair prospects before the beginning of the said disputes, or, to speak truly, since the arrival of the Pasha seemed to us so salutary and advantageous. Indeed, to such an extent that everyone imagined that in Bassora not enough merchandise would be found to absorb all the expected ready cash. But that fortune has turned so much, and the merchants have stayed away, we, along with all other merchants, must take comfort in the hope that the consequences of that upcoming peace will yield somewhat more favorable fruits. As far as the Persian is concerned, not the slightest reliable report is yet received; scarcely anything more is said of it than that a new rumor is currently spreading as if Thamas Coelie Chan had fallen in a battle against the Turks. Which, according to our humble thoughts, were well to be wished, so that at last, through the death of that grasping and bellicose nature, the everywhere devastated and calamitous condition of lands and peoples might attain a refreshing respite and restoration of the so long languishing broad trade, in which so much, but especially the Honorable Company and us, Their Honors' humble servants, is so deeply concerned. In these days, the overbearing Pasha also could not refrain from undertaking an attack against the English present in this place, wishing to oblige them to unlade their three ships lying here in the roads, as well as to pay duty on the imported cargoes according to an unusual manner, or else, in case of further delay of his desire, he would ultimately compel them to depart from here or pay nine percent duty, just as the Turkish, Armenian, and other merchants are accustomed to contribute. But that Lord Pasha had to withdraw his hand from that unreasonable attempt to his own shame, since the Council of that nation, Mr. Martin French, on that insulting demand, de facto requested the supercargoes and captains of the aforesaid vessels to repair on board and make their ships ready to sail, assuring them at the same time that he in person with his men would follow them that very evening, unless that dispute were settled according to his desire before sunset. Which indeed essentially happened, for the aforementioned Council not only returned from the Pasha with robes of honor, but moreover obtained a firman confirming the previous custom of two percent on their imported goods. Subsequently, so as not to be seen as the author of this new trickery, the blame for all this dispute was shifted by the Pasha onto the English interpreter, as having poorly understood and not truthfully reported the messages back and forth. And because the remaining cash consists of such a small amount and even up to now has not been turned into current money, whereas with us from the sale of goods a portion thereof might still be needed in due time for necessary maintenance as well as otherwise, we will, under favorable will and pleasure, have to retain the same here for the present, until in due course, through some advantageous sales, whether from the goods on hand or still expected, that sum may have grown somewhat larger, and consequently the remittance by an Honorable Company's vessel, as well as the drawing up of the invoice, might be made. The passage omitted here is to be found in extract under the separate papers. Now nothing remains for us beyond this, by way of continuation, to add but our humble prayer that we may receive here as soon as possible a ship and suitable cargo, so that through the sale and the resulting profits thereof, the supposed heavy financial loss of the Honorable Company at this factory may the sooner be recouped, and that we, through a vigilant zeal and more accurate attentiveness in the future, may show that we are minded not to make ourselves subject a second time to such a total rebuke, but on the contrary, as much as the possibility of man will permit, to find everything acceptable that may serve to render in due time to their High Noble Gestrenge Grand Excellencies, as well as to Your Honors, the desired credit in our obliged servitude; requesting at the same time that in case the aforesaid ship should not yet have been dispatched and, with Your Honors' prepared project, had not yet received its full cargo, then to have the goodness to be willing to add to it the following goods of which we (as shown above) are already sold out; to wit: 4 packs of ambenia 20 packs of seclasses 10 to 15 packs of salempores, of the fine sort, or mallemolles, and under No. 18 alongside the specified well-selected colors, of which the profits obtained on the same we have the honor to present to Your Honors for approval; 10 to 15 tubs of Japanese camphor 1000 lb Siamese gumlac, on sticks, because we cherish good hope of being able to sell the same very soon to the merchants, as inquiries have already been made for some of it. This respective consignment having been prepared, one hears that on the 27th of the last passed month of April, the commissioners sent out regarding the affairs concerning the peace between the Turks and Arabs, are to come within tomorrow or the day after tomorrow with the peace contracts, in order that the reciprocal seals may be ratified, truly to the extreme joy of everyone inside this city, though not to the best satisfaction of the Pasha, since the opposing party, as was learned, have stipulated some conditions, the granting of which must turn much more to the shame of the Pasha than to his honor, as he began this dispute like a roaring lion and now comes to end the same like a bleating sheep; but God grant that the harmful consequences of both these extremities may thereby cease, and now afford us hope for a wished-for success in the matters concerning trade. Having mentioned in our previous humble letter of the 14th of this month, and the appendix of one day later (whose duplicate accompanies this under No. 19), 3 pieces of teak beams, which we delivered for the use of the English ship Royal George, the deliverer hereof, at the request not only of its supercargo, but also that of the English Consul in Juddah, out of a polite accommodation, we pray hereby for Your Honors' generous approval, and that we may write off this small sum of ƒ 12: 3:— in our books under that name. The English ship the Anna Frigate, whereof the supercargo, Mr. Charles Hunter, on the 4th of August had handed to us Your Honors' acceptable letters of the 13th and 14th of the past month of April, appeared at anchor before this place only 4 days ago, as in all that intervening time nothing other than contrary or adverse winds have prevailed, and consequently they had to make this roadstead by observing the currents. Concerning the letters given to me by Your Honours for the Duke Ismael Gan and Naib Ahamed Cdele Belk, I delivered the same to him, it is true according to the custom of the country on the 1st of September, not having been able to obtain an audience earlier, we having been received by that lord, as also by these lords Moestaffa Beek and Mieria Asaeb, who on behalf of the Duke together with him are currently administering the government, with great promises and the pledge of their favour to be of assistance to us according to their power as far as may be practicable. As regards Thamas Tan, I have learned the following news thereof: it having been made known here on the 26th of the past month of May upon the arrival of the chappar Sation Baek sent from the army of Thamas Tan in 14 days, that he had broken up camp at Thanvangenja and had marched with 25000 men against the Turk towards Chassas, who were in the field on that side with a numerous army to force him to raise the siege of the castle of Erivan, which he had already kept besieged for up to 9 months and is on the point of surrender; he nevertheless having left there 12000 men for the siege and surrounding of the said castle, as well as 15000 men in 9 posts under the command of Chawyan, son of the late recently deceased ambassador of this crown Mohammed Alie Chan, in order to prevent them all supply. Extract dated 24 May Year 1735. desiring to proceed with the purchase of separate parcels, but the said prices being listened to, the aftermath of the previous year still sticking in their throats, we nevertheless flatter ourselves that they will shortly be compelled to cede them to us, since the Englishman as well as we are doing everything possible to bring down the said prices. For which reason, on 17 June, with Snrannees, though under Your Honours' esteemed approval, for the greatest benefit of the Honourable Company, as such was my true intention, I deemed it necessary to enter into a verbal gentleman's agreement with him on his word of honour, to accept for the time being these small quantities of animal fleece at no higher than 11 tv.s copper money, and not to raise the said price without each other's consent, in order thereby to deprive the merchants of large parcels of the chance to demand much higher prices, while we are joined together to bargain for their fleece. For if we were to accept small quantities of 10, 20, and 30 mans for 12 and 13 mans, they would certainly and surely flatter themselves that they would be given more for their quantities of 1000 and 2000 mans. But now seeing matters handled thus between us, they will indeed be compelled to cede them to us, since they cannot get away with it and, through the said contract, everything they had hoped for will come to naught. Regarding the aforementioned plague, the pestilence, I must inform Your Honours that, through God's blessing, it is presently abating. This city too, where as I am reliably informed daily 50 to 60 people died of sudden illnesses among the various residents; however, this was mostly attributed to the excessive heat of these days, which had lasted for several days and is unusual for this country, though not half of the Gamron residents fled from it; which, thank God, has also abated, since it is much cooler than some days before. Pensel under date 24 August Anno 1705: It is observed in the ninety [illegible], but Maslot and other places of assembly, 3000 men were dispatched; on the 10th of this month, shortly after one another, 3 chappars arrived anew to raise 200 men, in order to send the aforementioned troops, etc., etc. All of which openly reveals that it is not such a great victory as was at first said, but rather quite the contrary, as is also believed by most all people. Because this summoning of people, as otherwise, appears to effect very little, the true report, as far as I have been able to gather concerning this victory up to now, consists of the following: That the Khan, after having besieged the castle of Ginza for about 9 months in vain, was finally told by the commandant of that fortress that when he besieged the said castle, he must first dislodge Abdulla Pasha, who with his army estimated at 150000 men had already halted about 6 months ago in Crassar. If he did so, they would willingly surrender the castle to him; but if not, they were resolved to risk the utmost for it, and rather eat each other up completely than listen to any accord as long as the aforementioned Pasha was there. Which retreat made the Khan all the bolder; yet, not daring to undertake anything against the castle with his small force, he resolved to draw them out in the manner aforesaid. This succeeded, as Abdulla Pasha sent 50000 men against him to dislodge him from there. This, however, turned out to the disadvantage of the Pasha, for his troops, after having defended themselves bravely for a day, were forced to seek their salvation in flight. As soon as the Pasha received news of this, he immediately dispatched orders that they should betake themselves within the castle. The battle took place about 3 hours from the aforementioned castle, in which many men fell on both sides, though the number is unknown. This battle will possibly cost the Pasha his head, as he engaged in battle without orders, as aforesaid. The Khan, at the end of this battle, retired about 4 days' journey from there, both to await more troops and to recover himself, and to be closer to the castle of Genja, being now in the middle of Genja and Cassau. This being the true news, as far as it has come to my ears, I considered myself obliged to inform Your Honours of it. Yet be it as it may, the poor inhabitants of this realm must pay for it once again. For as a bounty or prize money for his soldiers, he has levied on this city and subordinate places 2000 tomans in silver money, and 100 tomans in the same specie for the chappar who brought the news here; and as is understood, on Spahan 7000, Sjiraas 4000, and on Gamron or Caars 3000 tomans in silver money. Consul under date 24 August 1735 Jan 1351 Consul under date 24 August 1735 f complaints are such that always, whether he wins the victory or he is beaten, there must always be money, then booty money and then again money to raise troops, so that in the end the total ruin of this kingdom must follow from it, the bearer of the first-mentioned 2000 tomans having to be the chapar with the firman and power of attorney from him, Mirza Panah, according to the order of him, Tahmasp Khan, the same having arrived here on the night of 25 June; we having been received and entertained very amicably by this gentleman during the welcome visit we paid him, he being, so it seems, a reasonably good friend of the Honorable Company, but not very well-disposed toward the English nation, as appears from the fact that on 2 July he demanded a bond from all the merchants whereby they bound themselves that, whenever it appears that anyone has exported any copper coin from here without permission of the regents, to whatever place it was sent, their goods would then be forfeited for the benefit of this ruler, it having been publicly prohibited two days beforehand; he also ordered the same to be demanded from the English, whereupon it was asked whether he also demanded such from us, and he answered no, that such was not necessary. That order is very bad for the aforementioned nation, as they have about 30 chests of counted copper money here and intended to send the same toward Kerman at the first good opportunity, this now having become entirely impossible for them through that order, the Englishman seeking by all means to mitigate this order, though thus far in vain, although we believe it will not remain in effect for long, as otherwise the entire trade will be completely ruined by it. For I myself have had them inspected by Awannes and men knowledgeable in these matters to determine how old all of them are, who declared them to be no more than 1½ to 2 years old. As regards their prices, I do not know them as yet, because the person qualified by Awannes for this purchase is currently in the interior. By express runner, Your Honor's very pleasant letter dated the 3rd of this month was delivered to us with singular obligation, together with the enclosed secret resolution taken on the day of our departure to this mineral water, along with the copied instructions by the bookkeeper Morenvont and Armenian of the residents named Tuwannees regarding the departure and biscuits. We shall, as it rests with the undersigned, pass over the same herewith, since it has been framed in the negotiation of the Honorable Company. Just as the said instructions, according to our humble judgment, preferring the constant service of the Honorable Company, were found arranged according to the nature of the matter, as therein solely the true interest of our high superiors was preambled in the introductions and continuation of the further articles of those writings, so that their people strictly, according to each one's tenor and duty, acquit themselves, as more particularly at the conclusion of the instructions the said bookkeeper's commencement was presented. Nor have we seen the obligation of the charges assigned to them on account of expenses with the establishment undertaken for the economy in his residence, whereof we according to obligation Your Honor... Since then, we have on the 17th of January of this year received per the yacht Anna Catharina Your Honors' agreeable missive of the ultimate of September prior, which showed us, to our singular obligation, the shipment on the ship De Jacoba for this government of 20 cases of rosewater, 100 pieces of empty carboys, 2 cases with 20 lb of medicines, 10 mat sacks with 2800 lb of gallnuts, and a small case of samples of the same, all in reduction of our previous demand made before this date. Which one and the other we also, through the good care of the Malabar ministers per the aforesaid yacht Anna Catharina, into which the same were transshipped from the Jacoba aforesaid by the said Commandement, have received in good order. For the amounts whereof, Your Honor's directorate trade books have been credited, as well as what was [illegible] to Your Honor regarding the office. We furthermore favor the same with the costs of the 308 gunny sacks consumed for the known Persian copper coinage, to the amount of f 43: 3:–. We shall await the further consignment as soon as possible from Your Honors according to your made promise, what is still missing from our so-requested petition, and likewise through Your Honors' further good care that which stands noted in the currently forwarded requisition, the fulfillment of which is de novo friendly requested from Your Honor.
