For this reason, the last handkerchiefs dispatched by the aforementioned person were erroneously recorded as painted work, but were in fact printed, all the more because here they know how to stamp a kind of tendril in floral work so skillfully that it does not yield to any painted work. This has prompted us, aiming at the aforementioned profit, to have the demanded quantity prepared according to a piece or two of the finest samples, which are to be dispatched from here in the autumn, since time was too short to dispatch them with the ships that were here during the currently departing favorable monsoon. Furthermore, we had the honor to congratulate the Honorable Mr. Leendert de Cleen on his transfer from the administration and the Honorable Mr. Daniel Hey on his promotion to Senior Merchant and Commander, which came to our knowledge from the copy of the honored letter from their High Excellencies dated 20 June of the past year sent to your Honor's directorate, and to wish them from the bottom of our heart all desirable contentment. Meanwhile, from the accompanying commercial papers, your Honors will be able to learn everything that has occurred in this region and its surroundings, and among other things encounter the occurred change in the chief administration, which, due to the departure of the Honorable Rogier Boore, fell to the share of the aforementioned Chief of Cossimbazar, Senior Merchant Joan Albert Sichterman, who, for as long as he may enjoy the good fortune to occupy this new post, will diligently seek to maintain the mutual correspondence between your Honor's directorate and ours, in the firm trust that this inclination of his will be answered by the arrived Commander with the same readiness, for the relief of those whom your Honor commends to the safe keeping of the Almighty along with the turnover in the serviceable interests of the Company, and we remain with fraternal greetings. Persia To the Honorable Mr. Daniel Hey, Senior Merchant and Commander, together with the Council at Gamron: Honorable, Valiant, Wise, Prudent, Very Discreet Sirs, Your Honor's pleasant original letter dated 3 November sent with the ship Castor in patrol to Tuticorin to be delivered from there to this place, has been received here upon the arrival of the ship Barneveld in this roadstead on 16 November last, through the Commander there, the Honorable Mr. Leendert de Cleen, who, having been obliged to touch at this place due to a shortage of drinking water and some other necessities, lifted the said letter from the aforementioned vessel, along with the 8 cases of rose water with which your Honor has satisfied our latest demand. For the delivery of which we render your Honor our friendly gratitude herewith, and no less for the shared copies of advices under dates 6 February and 23 September sent from the Netherlands and their Excellencies the High Government of India at Batavia. The aforementioned vessel Barneveld, after being provided with what was necessary, departed again on 23 November from the said capital, and subsequently on the 26th thereafter appeared for dispatch the ships named in the margin hereof, which, as soon as we had provided them with the necessary drinking water, we granted their dispatch alongside this. Furthermore, we shall not fail to enter the amount of the aforementioned 8 cases of rose water, totaling 478 florins 6 stuivers, in our trade books in favor of your Honor's directorate, just as we now accompany this with three closed packets addressed to your Honor, delivered here in these days from both Ceylon and Mocha, beside which we have also enclosed the copies of our respective letters under date 21 November to the High Honorable Lords Directors in the Fatherland.

Surat under date 24 August Anno 1735 Surat under date 24 August Anno 1735 Sent on 13 February, 24 April, 2 October, and 2 November recently past to the said their High Excellencies in Batavia, by which Your Honour will find described the entire course of affairs on this Coast since our sent copy advices of the past year. We, referring to the contents of the same, make a friendly request that Your Honour will have the goodness to supply, in accordance with the current demand, some necessities required by this Commandery, and to fulfill their nature and quantity in the nearest future. Meanwhile, we also cannot fail to remain beholden to the Honourable Mr Director Daniel Hurgronje for his Honour's kind offer to maintain a mutual correspondence during his Honour's governance at that place with this Coast. Wherefore we not only assure his Honour that everything possible shall be contributed from our side, but we also take the honor to cordially congratulate his Honour on his Honour's promotion to the Directorate there, with the further wish that Heaven may grant its blessing upon his Honour's person and the interests of the Honourable Company, and soon bring that disturbed realm into a peaceful and desired state, for the revival of their Honourable trade. And since it has also pleased their High Excellencies in Batavia to release the undersigned Commander from here in full honor, in order to repatriate to the Indian capital, he also feels obliged heartily to thank Your Honour hereby for the mutual correspondence maintained with this place during his presence here. In whose place the undersigned Commander Julius Valentijn Stein van Gollenesse, having appeared on this roadstead with the ship Stad Leiden on the first of the current month, presently likewise takes the honor to offer Your Honour his readiness to cultivate a mutual harmony regarding the service of the Honourable Company. Concerning which Your Honour may please be assured that on his part he will not fail to do everything in his power for the advancement thereof. Furthermore, we have enclosed an expense account for what was supplied to the bearer of this letter, as well as a bill of lading invoice of some legal books presently going over to Your Honour, which their High Excellencies have pleased to order us to send to Your Honour's Directorate, just as we were also recommended by the aforesaid their High Excellencies to send the receipt slips of the known 20 cases of Pontac wine to Your Honour. But as it was already shown to Your Honour in our previous letter of 16 February of the current year that we are unable to do so, we shall in due course respectfully notify their High Excellencies regarding this. Meanwhile, a packet of papers addressed to Your Honour, received from Ceylon on this day, has also been delivered by them, alongside which we also send to Your Honour, in a case marked L: A: several esteemed bound books, among others received from Batavia, with orders to supply Your Honour directly with some of them. This would have happened in the company of our latest of 8 September past, had not the books on the voyage suffered the misfortune, alongside a parcel of other goods, of becoming wet due to leakage of the vessel, as we then informed Your Honour; and although they have been dried and aired in the sun several times, they nevertheless remain constantly damp due to the nature of the sea water, the invoice of the books now sent over amounting to the sum of f 1246: 8:—. High Noble, Valiant, Highly Esteemed, Resolute, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent and Very Generous Lord and Lords, High Noble, Commanding Lords, Notwithstanding our humble general report under today's date, which we have given to Your Excellencies according to the circumstances of the times and our bounden duty regarding the agreement entered into on account of a wool contract, and whereof in this document among other things mention is to be made, there has nevertheless come into serious consideration that which was noted in the joint decree of the 7th of February of the current year, at the time when the price of Kerman wool, both here and what it had fetched at sale in the motherland in the year 1733, was carefully compared and also cited therein, in respect of the explicit offer of the English Agent Mr. Cockhiel through his second Mr. Clift, whereof previously in passing, but then emphatically, having caused notice to be given to the provisional director and again repeated in a detailed manner, conditionally nevertheless, in order thereby to let both Companies mutually enjoy the advantage that could be obtained, etc. This, and the amiable verbal assurances of the same when meeting together, being moreover further reinforced, upon sounding him out, that he ought not to be mistrusted, on the grounds that upon the director's reminder that it would be best, in case we joined together in the matter at hand, to keep everything secret, he fundamentally confirmed this, thus gave reason, after the business transacted in the aforementioned session and that held on the 5th of March thereafter, also in secret to devise such measures as we in all humility hope will prove to be to Your Excellencies' satisfaction, and principally consisting in this: that one found the price of that cargo, according to the obtained testimony of the said Lord Agent (inserted in the first-cited decree) which was quoted alternatively with that of our wool factor at 35 mahmudis in shis, or 14. 17. 8 shis, to discrepancy very little, especially when there was added thereto the customary 10 percent on 35 mahmudis weight, amounting firstly to 38 and a half of the same mahmudis.

Meanwhile, Mr. Cochiell prepared for his departure for Bombachia, sharing a great longing with us concerning the arrival of their Kirman factor. The English affairs in Ispahan were presented as hazardous by private notice inserted into the daily journal under the 27th of March, and that which followed from a subsequent Company missive of the 3rd of June, presented here on the 21st ditto, indicated that said nation was positively refused for the present under a pretext of 11 hundred thoman. Regarding the former, it was then simultaneously deemed most advisable to consider neutrality, for if the presumptive supposition of having to clear out of the country, or indeed a prohibition against doing further trade by them, had taken effect, we would nevertheless be the sole masters thereof; and if they were not fundamentally damaged in their prerogative, a faithful alliance could produce nothing but advantage. For this reason, one ought always to strive to keep the upper hand, etc. Thus, nothing remained other than prudently to watch that nation in the aforementioned case, the more so because we were aware that they still had claims for fully 3000 thomans from their advances made at Kirman in previous years, and were consequently indeed obliged to help reduce the price of that fleece to the utmost of their ability. The aforementioned lord Agent, with singular courtesy during the last visits on the 27th and 28th of the said month of February, expressed his regret over the absence of their aforementioned wool collector, Mr. Widwell, but hoped that this might not become an obstacle to achieving our beneficial objective, provided only that the matters might remain between us. He assured us that he had given full authority to Messrs. Watter and Clifft not to neglect anything in that regard, and then also had the politeness to recommend the same to both of them in our presence. This, being regarded as an extraordinary civility and properly reciprocated with applicable assurances, nevertheless caused time to pass, so that on the 21st of March thereafter, following the receipt of dubious reports of the arrival of their factor, we judged it best by secret deliberation to set our hand to the work to advance the master's interest to the best of our knowledge, in accordance with what was alleged therein. Proceeding to a general resolution taken on the very same day, in which we would have preferred to press the Armenian Auwannees harder by granting him even less of a salary, had it not been that, in the event of a positive refusal to be employed any further in that trade for Your Honors' interests, he might even be inclined to go over to our neighbors (as he was allegedly able to do in previous years), which would visibly be pernicious. In the hope of Your Honors' highly esteemed approval, it was therefore resolved to employ him once more this year in an acceptable manner, with the addition of the bookkeeper Simon Clement, unless Your Honors might absolutely order that trade to be conducted by the same, either alone or with another capable person, especially once the required experience, according to our good expectation, was mastered. To trust that Armenian in these matters in any manner much different from what has been done at present, considering his age, contains, in our very humble opinion, too much suspicion, since that sort of people possesses deceitful self-interest as if by nature, and this is well known here in the world. This is also the reason that he, Auwannees, was not informed of our made agreement.

Persia The 24th of August anno 1735 From Persia The 24th of August Ao 1735 with the said fellow competitors, under 30 March by secret resolution concluded circumstantially how the contract after mutual deliberation has been entered into, has not made it appear, since the same in the delivered, and in the general resolution of 5 May inserted instruction, was only concerning that, but expressly ordered, rather to cultivate harmony with that nation in a proper manner than not, since estrangement from the latter would only bring harm, and on the contrary from the first-mentioned friendship and benefit were to be expected; we very humbly pray Your Right Honorable Most Respectable Lordships not to take it amiss that for the rest we humbly refer to the copies both of the held proceedings and the delivered instructions on this weighty point to both the factors, and in this respect may further state that to the said bookkeeper Klement has been instructed in secret, but verbally, and commanded all that is necessary regarding this, to conduct himself in such a manner that it could not be proven he might have been the first aggressor in breaking the verbally entered contract; and since he, with the English factor, mentioned before, knows how to get along well with each other in everything here and also at Kirman, and moreover through this a desired success may be obtained, we have, regarding the aforementioned, exhorted our factors nevertheless to conduct themselves towards that nation in the most prudent manner, and the same has also been done on account of the sorrowful news of the plague, which had already approached to within 12 to 14 miles of that residence city, but according to their letter of 22 July, praise be to God, would have been only a severe ordinary illness; taking nevertheless, in hope of a gracious indulgence, the liberty most humbly to submit to Your High Honorable Most Respectable Lordships' consideration whether one, in case it was found that the Armenian conducted himself untrustworthy in the upcoming actual execution, and being convicted, should send him over to Your High Honors under some pretext or other, whereupon our timidity in that trade, regarding his going over to our adversaries or other harmful intentions, would not be able to cause us any disadvantage, and during which interim we, with the Lord's blessing, could begin that trade through our own servants, like the English, on a more faithful footing; and which, being approved by Your High Honorable Most Respectable Lordships, would then in our very humble opinion also be the right time to actually enter into a secret contract, either for one year or more, with our neighbors, upon continuation in these lands, whereas one is now fearful of it becoming public if it had been handled otherwise than has now been done, and that principally through this same Armenian, in case he should sometimes need to be harshly tackled concerning infidelity or otherwise; and regarding which the most necessary points concerning this have been made known to the bookkeeper Clement, both in writing and verbally, and he has moreover been expressly charged to pay close attention to his conduct, and having discovered anything noteworthy about it, to give notification of it then, which he has also assured; wherefore we shall look forward with heartfelt longing both to the outcome here, and to the illustrious and penetrating judgment of Your High Honorable Most Respectable Lordships, and moreover remain living in a humble confidence that this undertaking of ours may be honored with your most worthy approval.

The more so as the latest reports, cited hereinbefore, from our factors regarding Mr. Widwel his conduct toward the first-mentioned, have given us such good hope that we may with reason expect this year's harvest at an exceptionally reasonable price, which the Almighty may please to grant, while the trading post at Bassoura has until now been kept in reserve, being a particularly precarious and no less dangerous state of affairs regarding the residents and especially the broker Moeltjent, all arranged to the detriment of the Honorable Mr. Damies Hey, deceased, and having authorized a detrimental suspicion regarding the deceased from a private report sent by the merchant and first resident George Gutchi on the 25th of March before to the local commander, which reached us on the 17th of April of this year, the residents were notified in secrecy on the 19th of April, after separate deliberations were held, that locally the two persons who were under contract with the broker there and pointed out to us, Benjamen Wissendas and Natto, had been placed under arrest, and the inventorying of their goods had also been undertaken, but according to the accompanying written certificate nothing was found; we ordered the ministers likewise to compel the broker Moeltjent with respect to our missive, but that it would be even better, if possible, to seize his goods without delay, further recommending that those ministers exert all care in a prudent and dutiful manner so that the Honorable Company might not suffer the least disaster, nor be disparaged in its tender reputation by the surviving debtors of the said late Mr. Commander. The attorneys holding His Honor's qualification obtained in council on the 20th of December, anticipating a great deal of work with that affair, and the first signatory of this document besides being weak enough in the local administration to satisfy his duty as required, and the second executor being the junior merchant and local warehouse master, having considered having to make transfer and prepare for his departure on account of having obtained an honorable discharge from this directorship, caused them to request from the council in session on the 5th of May a discharge from the power of attorney concerning the affairs of the deceased, offering all documents pertaining thereto, which was also granted to those executors and thus caused us to be able to intervene amicably in everything regarding this private matter upon further occurrence. In the meantime, the proofs sent to us with the above-mentioned Bassoura missive, with the passages extracted from that letter, were duly prepared to serve for a separate meeting and insertion; however, before that could be held, we received further advice dated Bassoura the 15th of May on the 8th of June following, also containing a preliminary indication that the debts of the late Mr. Hey amount to about 3000 thomas, amounting to 127500 florins, and that provisionally, out of the Company's sold merchandise, he had also paid toward the settlement of a good portion thereof through the broker, instead of employing those funds for transportable specie, the said Mr. Gutchi wishing to obtain our opinion regarding the remainder, which amounts to (these are his own words) about 1000 thomas, with the [illegible]

In that same decree concerning the aforementioned contract of the cited heathens, intended to demonstrate that the same had long since been annulled, and therefore would serve to prove the innocence of the aforementioned Wissendas and Natto sitting in detention here, such, however, was not taken into any consideration because of its poor circumstance, being of insufficient value in the subject case, other than to leave the same in statu quo until further light on the matters should be received, and likewise the entire business of the said trading post, for those reasons on account of the difficulties already indicated and uncovered. Thirdly, to defer to the first signatory of this letter to cause to be instilled in them, as far as possible, fear and terror so that the deceased's pretended creditors shall not in the future satisfy themselves from the sale, in order to avoid subjecting themselves to even greater accountability, which would increase the peril in which they already lie, as it were, buried. Fourthly, to dismiss the Company's broker Moeltjent and look out for another; lastly, whether Fifthly, to entrust and assign to the bookkeeper and storekeeper there, Willem Slaers, following the Spahan example, a key to the cash vault and a similar responsibility. After the dispatch of our last joint letter dated 13 and 14 of this month, the duplicate of which is attached hereto, there was presented to us yesterday afternoon for reading, in a very surprising manner by the first undersigned hereof, a certain private letter dated 25 March prior, addressed from there by Mr. Gutchi to the same and to the provisional warehousekeeper Michiel Heynitz, both as authorized agents regarding the estate of the late Lord Director Dames Hey of blessed memory. Wherein His Honor, among other deplorable circumstances, gives in significant words a detailed description of the serious conduct and strange actions maintained and introduced there by the said deceased during his presence in loco, to our soul's painful regret, to such an extent that the Company's precious interests and concerns under Your Honors' administration might thereby, which God forbid, suffer and retain a notable disadvantage and obstruction. In order to counter and avert this with all human possibility, we are bound by oath and duty to send this to Your Honors by extraordinary English opportunity, so as to make known not only that we have provisionally arrested here, for lack of a satisfactory account, the two Banyans Natta and Wissendas, designated in the said private writing as special companions of the Company's broker over there named Moeltjant, but also to expressly order Your Honors by this present letter to secure, without delay and in the same manner, the person of the said Moeltjant, though preferably, if possible, his goods, as we have today found by secret resolution to be most highly necessary, if one does not wish to expose oneself as well to unaccountable conduct and see Your Honors' own honor and reputation stray upon the path so dispiritedly paved and trodden by the frequently mentioned deceased. After the end of the ordinary meeting, following received and paid visits between the departed English agent Mr. Cockil and us, since his declaration made and recorded in the resolution of the 7th of the preceding month of February, after many presented reasons, it was pondered in such manner that we among ourselves concerning the execution of this permanent contract, to the benefit of our noble paymasters, had to proceed with the utmost circumspection and secrecy on both sides, considering that if the same were to become public, a necessity to have to accept it could very easily arise therefrom, just as is the case with the silk trade. This sole consideration was also the primary cause that in conferring about this point after the above-mentioned decision, the most cautious course had been taken, and the said agent had only wished for the arrival of their wool factor Mr. Wedil before his departure, but now being notified by missive that the same was likely to take another 20 to 25 days to arrive, and he being unable to wait any longer, he thought, in agreement with the Director in the presence of the merchant and trade bookkeeper Mr. Cornelis Engelschen, during the time given to the aforementioned agent for a visit, that it could not well be managed otherwise than to postpone this matter until the said Mr. Wedil appeared. He had fully authorized and given special instructions to the gentlemen remaining here, Mr. Watter and Clift, to enter into agreements, namely, if in the upcoming easterly monsoon one could not obtain the wool for 18, 19 to 20 mamoodis in white money, or ƒ [illegible], to cease the entire trade, and in case things proceeded according to wish, nevertheless to have much less collected from their side this year, in order to make the actual fleece suppliers thereby better inclined to reduce the prices. All this having been discussed among one another in this manner, the Director submitted to the members for mature consideration whether it was not most advisable, before taking a positive decision hereon on behalf of the Company, to wait another twenty days after the arrival of the said Wedil, especially as it seemed to him in this matter that if the most desirable progress might not immediately follow, at least no further disadvantage would be perceived. It was also his thought that it would be well worth the effort, if one entered into it in future, to continue the collection according to former custom, since it is not yet forbidden, and to assign to the Armenian wool factor a capable individual from among the clerks, in order that trust in such a combined operation might be founded with greater reassurance. Finally, with good deliberation according to the gravity of these matters recommended on the 25th.

Hereupon, after mature deliberation and having weighed and brought forward everything that could serve the purpose, it was judged and decreed by unanimous votes to be best at this time to make use of our own and the above-mentioned means, so that the trade might progress; and also to continue in this manner with the English, with which this resolution ended and they proceeded to the ordinary business. The English wool factor Mr. Wedil having finally, after long waiting, arrived from Kirman on the 27th of this month, and further having paid a visit yesterday afternoon accompanied by Mr. Clift to the Lord Commander, this moved His Honour to convene this secret session, in the first place to give the council a precise and full account of His Honour's conference held on that occasion with the said Britons regarding the important matter of the wool trade, and in the second place to take into serious consideration with the same what would best and most profitably agree with the Company's interest and standing in this matter, and what ought to be decided lest we expose ourselves to blameworthy conduct through an imprudent scheme and mistaken precaution, drawing upon our necks the righteous displeasure and resentment of our highly venerated masters; after which His Honour aforesaid, introducing the matter, made known to the members that previously the said Mr. Clift, having brought up the contract entered into beforehand with the departed English agent Mr. Cockil and the Lord Commander, and for known reasons held under consideration on both sides until now, as appears from our resolutions dated the 5th and 21st of this month, had declared himself concerning the entering into of such an agreement in the following manner and detailed conditions: Firstly, that they would sufficiently bind themselves through the execution of a written bond in the sum of 50 to 100 tomans to the debit of their factor, in order not to raise the price of the wool without consultation with ours. 2. That the settlement of that fleece wool should take place with each other after the end of the yearly harvest. 3. If their factor should exceed or act against the contract and could be convicted thereof, the above-mentioned sum should be handed over to ours. 4.
