From Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735 Persia under date 24 August Anno 1735 First came under consideration that regarding the first point, the granting of such an obligation on our part would be an ignominious mistrust and thus would notably tend to the prejudice and damage of the Company's ancient credit and esteem, which has successively been so dearly and highly recommended to us, whilst regarding the second, through the mixing of the accounts some confusions and quarrelsome broils could easily creep in and result, besides that all novelties and unusual practices have never appeared agreeable to our praiseworthy lords masters, but on the contrary have always been guarded against and disapproved by them as matters mostly of a disadvantageous consequence. Wherefore and for further adduced motives it was unanimously approved and resolved by the well-mentioned His Honour and the joint members to reject the mentioned first two articles, as well as the third, as it relates to the first, and consequently to adhere solely to the literal sense of the last or fourth condition under a significant restriction, that our given word or consent alone and by itself shall have to suffice for the trust and credit of that nation, without further binding ourselves in writing to any agreement; furthermore, during the sitting of the meeting, the Principal Warehouse Master Jacob Pollart and Fiscal Willem Meester, likewise with the consent of the council, were commissioned by the lord commander to give our mentioned neighbours the necessary advance notice of this resolution, as well as to take their sentiment and advice regarding those interests for our instruction, intending to incorporate the same here, in order to take a further and final decision in that regard during the present meeting. The mentioned commissioners having returned shortly thereafter upon executing the business, report was received that the English gentlemen had shown themselves fully willing to undertake this trade anew or from the beginning on the basis of the proposal chosen by us, mutually as men of honour and trust, without written promises, and to continue it as far as possible to the best advantage of both our paymasters, provided that reciprocally one would remain bound, upon confirmed proof of any fraud or abuses committed either by the English factor or by ours, to satisfy and reassure each other without delay to contentment; item that our factors, upon earlier departure and arrival at Kirman (as the journey thither was to be undertaken within 5 to 6 days), if no first bid had yet been made by the proxy of the Armenian Auwannes residing there, should set the first bid no higher than from 10 to 13 mann black money, being 2 mann less than Mr. Wedil had recently expended according to his own account, for uncleaned goods, as being the price that the mentioned Briton, upon his departure from Kirman, had ordered his remaining proxy there to offer and give no more, in which he, Auwannes, had to persist until the appearance in loco there of the just-mentioned Englishman, as well as then to proceed with each other not only cautiously but also in consonance according to circumstances, both in regard to the price and collection of that wool and concerning the advance payment of cash to be made to the suppliers of that fleece, they further promising, in order not to neglect any fitting precaution in all of this, but to take up the matter with true intent and full earnest, the necessary [illegible]

The council, after mature deliberation, having found nothing in this received conditional answer, supported by pertinent arguments, that conflicts with true equity or is inconsistent with prudent management and good administration, it was likewise positively resolved by common consent to fully conform and act in concert with them in this manner, in the hope and desire that by this means our endeavors in this matter may in time, under God's blessing, reach a desired conclusion, and moreover may meet with the precious approval of Their High Excellencies, the High Indian Government at Batavia. Thus resolved and decreed in the Netherlands factory of Gamron on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: C. The Lord Commander, having reminded the present members of this board, who had appeared before each other upon His Honor's appointment, concerning the lamentable accidents which had so often befallen the Honorable Company in former times through the unforgivable conduct of some of its own servants in this directorship, frequently tending to the prejudice of their successors, a fresh example of which is still known and remains from the bad administration of the former Spahan chief Nicolaes Schover, to the rightful resentment of Their High Excellencies at Batavia, who in their respected primary missive of 9 October of the past year, with reference to the last-mentioned dishonorable treatment, explicitly ordered us and earnestly wished us to be warned to exercise all possible oversight and good care so that the Company's servants here in general remain unencumbered and free from debts to the detriment of the precious credit of the Honorable Company; so His aforesaid Honor declared, not without a soul-oppressing emotion, that in accordance with the solemn obligation of his special duty, he now found himself compelled to uncover and bring to light a similar deformed matter, whereof the council was yesterday informed in passing during the interrogation upon the arrest of the two Banyans Natta and Wissendas, to the charge of his predecessor, the late Commander Dames Heij; even though this necessary demonstration by His Honor and the provisional Warehouse Master M.r Heijnitz, as the known administrators of the estate of the deceased, would contribute little, without prejudice to their substantial honor and esteem, to a well-deserved true gratitude for their already strenuous and well-known efforts and troubles undertaken in the interest of the respective heirs in this precarious estate, as serving the interests of our highly esteemed lords and masters above all personal views, favor, or token of thanks; after which His aforesaid Honor, in order to place himself beyond any suspicion of concealment, presented to the members for reading certain private advices in his own hand, together with the annexes belonging thereto, under date 25 March last, written at Bassoura by the First Resident, the Merchant George Gutchi, to the cited attorneys, and by the same from the

From Persia, under date 24 August anno 1735, received on the 17th of this month, which papers were read attentively by each of the members individually. Thus, the horrible circumstances contained therein, principally concerning how the deceased, during his presence at the aforesaid office, through a clandestine and desperate engagement maintained with the Honorable Company's broker there, Moeltsent, and a certain Armenian named Godja Pogos, had continually appeased and misled these unsuspecting people under the pretense of fine and alluring promises, to such an extent that with the help of the said broker, to whom the cash had been entrusted to be exchanged into current coin, he managed to defraud the Honorable Company's treasury of a considerable amount to the sum of circa 7000 thom.s for the payment of his own expenses and deep-rooted debts. This having become fully known to the council, the well-mentioned His Honour continued that he had just received a message with an offer of service from the English chief Mr. Geeckie, stating that he was about to write this evening via Bassaidoor to Bassoura. Therefore, if one wished to make use of this extraordinary occasion, the time would fall too short to treat this difficult affair in all its parts during this meeting, according to the light as yet provided to us, in such a manner as is required for a complete report to our honorable masters and rulers. He further proposed whether it would not be the shortest and readiest way to demonstrate to the servants at the just-mentioned office beforehand by a Company missive, in an urgent manner, our displeasure and grief over this unexpected turn of events, with express orders not only to take the person or goods of the aforementioned Moelsent into proper custody without the least delay or neglect, and to preserve them until further orders so that the Honorable Company, upon further examination of verified presence, might in time find its indemnification with those who according to law shall be judged accountable and responsible therefor, whether in whole or in part; but also with communication of the aforementioned arrest of the two Banyans, Nattoo and Wissendas, indicated in the mentioned private letter as guarantors of the said Moeljent in the subject case. Which was unanimously approved and resolved to be effected in the manner aforesaid, and also to keep this and the following resolutions secret, in accordance with our previous separate resolution under date 19 April last, the proceedings of this meeting being intended as a continuation thereof, to be handled in secrecy until such time as with evidence and without hesitation from anyone, Friday 10 June 1735, in the morning at 11 o'clock, absent the merchant and provisional trade bookkeeper Cornelis Engelsen due to indisposition, a further and distinct detail about everything should be obtained from the servants at the aforesaid office through a reply on the Company's behalf for our information. Finally, the Commander indicated that he intended, if it pleased God, to submit at the next upcoming meeting the necessary extracts and copies of the said writings for insertion, in the hope of not having erred in this regard. ' aug:s A:o 1735 From Persia under date 24:' aug:s Ao 1735. outside justice through thoughtlessness to prostitute the loss of his honor and reputation before the eyes of everyone, might be enabled to distinguish and, after finding out the facts, impartially attack the person or persons who entirely or in part have so irresponsibly plunged and entangled themselves in a labyrinth, of which the below inserted extracts as well as copies, according to the promise made in the aforementioned resolution, have given an unheard of, but regarding the interests of the therein involved late commander dames heij, unsatisfactory disclosure. —. Extract from a private letter dated 25. ' march 1735. by mister george gutchi Merchant and First resident at bassoura to the Honorable mister C: koenad Merchant and appointed commander of the Persian directorship together with mister m:r heijnitz under-merchant and provisionally warehouse master at gamron as authorized agents concerning the estate of the late former commander D: heij, dispatched and received by the aforesaid authorized agents on the 17. th april thereafter. After the received news of the death of the late commander heij, I have discovered matters in which many along with me, and especially the honor of the aforementioned late mister heij, of blessed memory, are extremely concerned, since that gentleman, our all-esteemed patron, to write the truth, has left matters here in such an improper state that there is groaning and crying to heaven about it by everyone who, at his precipitate departure from this place, seems to have been harmed, or is yet to be harmed: for consider well, my gentlemen, and there are many proofs and testimonies annexed that the late mister heij, at his Honor's departure from here, remained indebted to the aforementioned old broker moeljent for about three thousand thom.:s, for which his Honor, at the poor man's request on board and already under sail, would not even grant a handwritten note, even if it were only of two lines confirmed with his name. Whether this then, for one thing, may not be considered a barbarous example of unreasonableness. Please further be informed of the truth that all the moneys taken along from here by his Honor per castor en pollux on the Company's behalf, were truly those that were raised here on interest by moeljant for the account of mister heij from various parties in the last few days, since from the proceeds of the sold merchandise, as soon as he got money in hands, he had his old debts paid off, in order to obtain good credit again for new ones; for the man has lived here in the most desolate state that one can imagine, and which could not at all serve to the respect of the Honorable Company, just as it will not be hereafter either, in case his surviving debts are not completely liquidated in their entirety. Further reflect, my gentlemen, on this forced dissimulation before me, who nevertheless have always been his Honor's true and sincere friend; how that worthy gentleman never could or would tolerate that either moeltjent or godja pagos, who, as the Honorable mister koenad well knows, has been his confidant and bosom counselor, should ever make known to me his true state or heavy debt, or mention anything thereof, and that if I should happen to inquire about anything, they then might only intimate that he indeed owed money to moeltjent, but above all were not allowed to reveal the great extent of it; besides that his Honor himself, on the sly during an outing, more than once declared to me that he had had a very hard time here, and was to leave bassoura with not less than seven hundred thom:s in debts, which was indeed very true, although uttered with sinister intent, just as was no less his earnest yet secret recommendation to moeltjent privately, namely: that he, above all, must take care to use the moneys received in hand for his [illegible]

From Persia under date 24 August anno 1735 From Persia under date 24 August Ao 1735 Particulars from the aforementioned letter properly concerning that residency, touching upon it and being able to present it for consideration in the meeting according to the weight of its division, appeared to His Honour so embroiled, precarious, and suspicious that, in order to tackle the matters in full earnest and ex fundamento, a verbal proposal might not have as much effect toward a well-guided decision as, on the contrary, could reasonably be assumed and expected from a written representation. His Honour testified, therefore, that he had deemed it safest and at the same time most expedient to choose and take in hand the latter means, both for his own convenience and that of the members, and for better accountability /with the wish not to forfeit the highly esteemed goodwill of the Noble High Indian Government at Batavia through this extraordinary treatment in this extraordinary case/, upon which work was begun with all humanly possible effort, though until today there had been no opportunity to have it serve. Whereupon, after His Honour showed that paper and handed it over for reading, it was found to contain the following: Written secret representation for consideration concerning the factory of Bassoura, presented respectively to the Honourable Gentlemen C.s Engelsen, M.e Heijnitz, W.m Meester, Jan Bout, E.s Nuijts, and Christoffel de Haan, joint members of this political council, regarding the precarious state evident therein. My esteemed gentlemen and good friends, The heading of this document will undoubtedly be able to lay the foundation for whoever deigns to note the words "precarious state"; this has been impressed upon my mind by the latest letters received from there, under dates of 25 May and 13 July last. These have also, in my opinion, been read by Your Honours not only with just as much astonishment as could happen on my part, but also indeed give cause, in a similar manner, to attribute a proportionate title to that never-supposed situation with its present condition. Just as I /this being so/ shall proceed to kindly remind Your Honours beforehand, according to my bounden duty, of the precautions already put into effect, as seen in separate letters and resolutions. It is as much to be hoped as to be wished that these will cause a different conception among the residents, especially as mentioned in the latest letters sent to them dated 19 April and 10 June; but since they were lost on the way, this is apparently in doubt, though it can still be remedied by sending copies thereof when a secure opportunity presents itself for that purpose. Even if this is done now, I nevertheless remain fearful that they will not undertake to make any redress regarding the broker Moeltjent, because Mr. Gutchi—apart from the noted discharge in the first-mentioned Bassoura letter dated 25 May, of which the sequel will speak—very earnestly indicates that it would be better and more reassuring for him if we were to appoint another broker /see pages 14 and 15 thereof/ and at the same time devise a means for him to receive his just deserts for the abuse of too great a trust /pages 55 and 74 cited merchant and first resident regarding a capital of about tomans considered for him, Moeltjent/. My limitation on the aforementioned subject becomes even greater when one comes to confront the clear discharge cited above in the same letter with the evidence under Nos. 12 and 14, which Mr. Gutchi likewise arranges in order for demonstration and transfer, showing that the deceased Senior Merchant and Commander of this Directorate, the late Honourable T. Heerdames Heij, actually had such a considerable amount drawn by the said factory before his departure, and at the same time gave orders to the same thither.

From Persia, dated 24 August Anno 1735. to satisfy the claim of the Company's merchandise, and that which had also essentially, yet God forbid, occurred to the amount of 1030 tomans, see their said letter pages 69 and 70, which not only continued to bear interest at 2 and 3 per cent per month, but must also be liquidated; requesting to sequester everything, both here and that which might be in Batavia, even down to orphan funds in the safe of the well-mentioned deceased gentleman, until their High Noble Rigorous Grand Worships, the High Indian Government at Batavia, have judged thereon and decided those matters; first condemning that broker by making him receive his reward according to his works, and likewise holding the deceased gentleman properly as a man upon whom all that borrowing of funds must indeed be incumbent, from which the worst arises, to effect the sequestration in the interim, etc.; in order now by us jointly concerning this questionable and no less distressing affair, as the first point, to consider together and to our true best knowledge and conscience, their highly mentioned Honours, under whose gracious and much more penetrating judgment we have always sought to show ourselves entirely submissive and obliging, so that this high esteem may remain accorded to us; from these motives found among us, to discover in all humility who in the case subject has the most reasonable capacity, and is consequently also liable, not only for the already suffered, but also the in future incurred monetary damage that must be repaid to the Honourable Company. Hereon I refer myself beforehand to the secret resolution of 10 June last, since we have founded the same upon the highly wise order given Anno 1691, dated 12 November, to be found in the compilation pages 14 and 15; and will say of the broker's proofs that they appear to me, both from his books and the passed attestation by a single Armenian named Pogos, to be false and unbelievable; for only consider, Gentlemen, whether such a single Banyan, who lives outside the Company's residence there, fully 400 paces if I recall correctly, could obtain such an important capital of 3000 tomans, mostly on his own bonds at the departure of Castor and Pollux, on his authority alone from so many people; or whether indeed one of all the said gentlemen, Jutchi as head, van Suchtelen as secunde, or the native inhabitant, must have also been, nota bene, in secrecy, neglected the same from the forthcoming brokers throughout all that time before the report of the death of the deceased Mr. Hey arrived there, to have addressed them thereof, either for the payment or any necessary pre-advertisement, since everyone will readily agree with me that the same is in accordance with reason, through fear of theft, fire, etc. Secondly, the same Bassora letters acknowledge that this gentleman in no way, neither by word of mouth nor in writing, regarding his left-behind debts, had declared himself otherwise than to Pogos in whole and to Mr. Gutchi for only 700 tomans, as can be seen in that letter, pages 62 and 66. Thirdly, the said account charged to the deceased becomes even more unacceptable with the reported interest of 2 and 3 per cent; on the one hand because the taking thereof, according to Turkish law, may not be at all, but it came to my knowledge in conversation when I lay ill there that whenever they do take interest on money without permission, they add it to the principal, and the bonds are always drawn up according to the fixed term; so that, concerning that nation, I could not accuse them of having usured so unpardonably in this matter; and even far less the European friends there, since I have, concerning this, through the interpreter David Sahid with kind compliments, caused a certain Monsieur Boulleron, of whom the account makes mention and who is currently on site, to be asked whether His Honour had or had not had any outstanding account with the deceased Commander Hey at Bassora; if so, that I requested him to send me an extract from his daybook. Whereupon he fully replied in the negative, that he had never had an account outstanding with the deceased; but indeed with a certain Godja Pogos, and apparently the same would be involved therein; wherefore, to do me a service that one honest man was obliged to another, he would extract that account and send it to me. From Persia, under date 24 August Anno 1735. conclusion, if one considers in good conscience and without the least passion the recorded upright way of life, along with the documents produced—which are undoubtedly still in their Honors' memory—of the late aforementioned gentleman, compared with those standing above, just as I consider myself bound to consult Your Honors' equitable judgment, then it seems to me that the credit of the evidence from the broker Moeltjent and the Armenian Pogos falls away. However, before I express myself with ease, I would rather first await Your Honors' sincere deliberation in this matter, and in the meantime state that nothing evil or fraudulent intent that holds up in law and equity can or may be attributed to the late gentleman. Thus it will be difficult to settle this debt, which has been imposed upon him as unlawfully as it is godlessly, upon the one whose dead bones of an honest man would not only be disturbed, but whose surviving good memory, name, and family would remain defamed if one were merely to accept everything as truth. Besides this, I have never in my life heard that a second-in-command could be kept in the dark regarding sales and incoming cash for the same. It is true that in my presence the late gentleman drew up the account settlement with the broker, but we did not keep our cash account in such a manner that I, as the then second-in-command, when I was too ill and money needed to be taken from or brought into the cash box, often gave the key myself to Monsieur Slaers to be present there in my stead, as that person will also be able to testify, especially at the time when I had to be lifted and handled in the upper room by 2 to 3 people, even besides using crutches. Gentlemen, let Your Honors' thoughts therefore turn along with mine toward this utterly dangerous undertaking, in order to take dutiful precautions as much as possible for our High Noble, Severe, and Right Honorable Lords and High Rulers against further disadvantage, and to take such care that their High Noble, Severe, and Right Honorable Lordships may perceive some reassurance that nothing has been neglected or left unapplied by us toward an obligatory and at the same time legitimate redress, so far as we jointly are strengthened by God with capacity and are authorized by our most mentioned Lords Rulers to be able and bound to preserve and maintain their tender esteem and prosperity for a lifetime. From this follows the need to investigate what one may and shall undertake. The Pasha of Bassoura has indeed made peace with the Arab, but one may also well assume that that city is certainly about to be attacked by the Persian in revenge for the battle suffered through the agency of the British. Persia under date 29 August Ao 1735 From Persia under date 24 August A:o 1735 Honorable, Respected Sir and Gentlemen In compliance with Your Honors' esteemed order, I shall first make a beginning with the Company's broker Moeltjent in Bassoura, as has come to our attention from the successive letters of the merchant and head of Bassoura, Mr. Gutchi, written to the junior merchant and commander Carel Koenad and the council, dated 25 May and 13 June last, and how painful it appeared to us regarding the bad dealings of the above-mentioned Moeltjent on account of misplacing the Company's money of circa 3000 Thomans, which had been entrusted to him, the broker, in good faith by the above-mentioned first resident, for the exchange into desired coinages, and by the said broker had been employed for the payment of the debts left behind there by the deceased senior merchant and commander of this directorate, the late Honorable Mr. Dames Hey, which appears rather strange to me, and would sooner resemble a roguish trick than the dealing of an honest man by the repeatedly mentioned broker Moeltjent, as also on account of an account of a Monsieur Boulleron, obtained by the Honorable Commander C. Koenad at his request, and also an extracted account sent from their memorandum, whereby it also appears that the late Commander Hey owed nothing to the said Boulleron, and it was also roundly replied never to have had an outstanding account with the deceased, so that this and other preceding matters are not only very suspect but roguish, so that on this matter I am of the opinion to trust the broker with nothing further; Respectful reply to the written secret representation for deliberation, regarding the Bassoura office, submitted respectively by the Honorable Mr. Carel Koenad, merchant and appointed commander of this directorate, to the joint members of this political board, dated 6 July 1735, in order to answer thereto in writing so that the cited debt might not escalate higher, and my thoughts in this case would indeed be to look out for another pious, honest broker. As regards the first resident, Mr. Gutchi, concerning his all too good faith in the aforementioned broker, and furthermore according to his own writing of never having deserved such from him, this can, in my opinion, provide the first resident no excuse in the world in this case, but on the contrary must be regarded as a negligence or carelessness, to leave such a considerable amount with the broker for exchanging as is said above, whereas according to honor and duty he ought to have had that capital preserved in the Company's money chest, and not trust so much at once to a broker, which is even contrary to the order of our Lords Masters in the Fatherland, as appears from the here-annexed extract from the general missive of the Gentlemen Seventeen to the Governor-General and Council of the Indies, written on the date 9 May 1669, reading as follows: "The order and method devised by Director Goske and the council for the prevention of bankruptcies and bad debts, namely to have the money paid alongside the goods at the scale, pleases us particularly well, hoping that the same may henceforth be brought into practice in that manner; we also believe that these preceding examples ought to have taught us enough not to trust any brokers or strangers with the cash henceforth, but to keep it under oneself, it being also our express charge and order that such will have to happen." From Persia under date 24 August anno 1735 Gamron, the 11 July anno 1735. 10 June last, as well as to the representation submitted to this council by the honorable commander Carel Koenad. As regards keeping a secunde in the dark concerning the purchases and incoming cash, this also appears improper to me, since in my opinion it concerns his honor just as much as the first resident, and they are jointly subject to an equal accountability regarding the Company's valuable goods, cash, and whatever further depends thereon. Yet by their letter of 25 May last on page 73, wherein the first resident, according to his conscience, completely excuses the secunde, stating that the same could have contributed nothing whatsoever, which also gives room for reflection; yet in my view, the aforementioned junior merchant and secunde Abraham van Suchtelen should also bear accountability here, because it is also incumbent upon and entrusted to him. Regarding the proposal of the honorable commander C. Koenad concerning the treasury, to also give a key to the book- and expense-keeper Willem Slaers, which in my opinion would not be a bad thing, I am therefore of the opinion to let the same take effect, though all subject to the favorable approval of their High Noble Rigorous Grand Worships at Batavia. Regarding the dispatch of a ship to Bassouro, it is in my opinion not at all advisable at this present juncture of times, for the reasons given thereof cited in the representation, so that I fully concur with this. Concerning the proposal of the honorable commander to dispatch one or two gentlemen from this table thither at this time, it is in my view likewise not advisable, because the political council, upon the departure of the ships, will come to consist of only 5 gentlemen, of whom in my opinion none can be spared; unless the junior merchant and provisional warehouse master, Mr. Heijnitz, had been willing to undertake that commission upon the allegations of the honorable commander in his representation, or otherwise to delay until the arrival of the ship or ships, to which I fully refer, as well as to the submitted representation and what is further cited therein. Therefore I have on today's date read with attention the paper assigned by your honors, and considered what seemed most essential to me regarding it; in order then briefly to reply thereto with much respect, it serves as a serviceable reply that these tangled affairs seemed to me from the beginning somewhat unbelievable and doubtful; and that from the following circumstances. Firstly, I cannot understand how the execution of the transfer, as well as the packing of the Company's funds, must have taken place there, since the transmitted copy of the transfer from Bassouro is not provided with any date, or possibly left out through carelessness; would then not a single one of all the ministers remaining over there have inquired in the slightest about the received transfer, that the funds sent per Castor and Pollux, according to the broker's statements (of which mention is made in a private missive, dated 25 March last, written by the first resident the honorable Gutchi to the honorable commander C. Secondly, the aforementioned Mr. gutchi testifies in the just-examined private letter from Persia dated 24 August anno 1735, besides that His Honor, speaking of the late Mr. heij, had declared to me more than once in conversation while taking the air, that he had had a very difficult time here, and that he was about to leave bassouro owing not less than seven hundred thom.:s in debts, etc., to which is further added the forwarded copy of the bond charged to the late Mr. heij, seen among the estate papers in the custody of the pay bookkeeper, which in my humble opinion was warning enough—whether the former was truth or lies—that one ought to be on one's guard to keep the Company's monies not with a broker, but in the Company's cash box with the prior knowledge of his secunde Mr. abraham van suchtelen, as dictated by the ancient and very wise orders of the Honorable Company, and to be seen in the incoming letter book by missive of 9 May 1669 on fol: 127, where it is clearly stated henceforth not to trust any brokers or strangers with the cash, but to keep the same under one's own custody, etc. Thirdly, it also gives rise to great misgivings that the Company's funds and their books were not sent during the lifetime of the said late Mr. heij, who nevertheless lived for another three and three months after the closing thereof; furthermore, those gentlemen residents also let all English opportunities slip by in that interim without even deigning to send a single letter on the Company's behalf, much less the cash and trade books hither; instead, in the private missives exchanged by Mr. gutchi, several requests were made for the small vessel Elsbroek well-provided with a rich cargo of merchandise, from which it would also appear that at that time there could already have been no money in the cash box. Yet of all these mentioned circumstances, the least knowledge was never given to anyone here by the said ministers until after the death of the aforementioned late Mr. heij, at which point the bomb burst, so that one must now proceed blindly or by guesswork, unable to distinguish what is truth or lies, because the deceased late Mr. Peij cannot account for himself. In the fourth aspect, there also come the attestations given under oath by the Company's broker and one named godso Pogos, the first a heathen who knows nothing of God and His commandment, and the second an Armenian, who in these lands are certainly the most led by the nose and deceived; they say according to their statement that they took up those notable sums mostly all in their name, but none of them from her missive in person, but only to have heard, where the words of three Banyan letters are, whereby the said late gentleman was said to acknowledge certain contracted debts, to satisfy him, the broker, as soon as possible; supposing that there might be some truth to it, such in my humble opinion cannot have consisted of such a notable sum as to casually remit 3000 thom.:s by bill of exchange at the first opportunity, for that requires mamoodies; but that the outstanding account of the late Mr. heij with the said heathen and Armenian, if it is the truth, will have yielded considerably less, considering that the settlement of accounts is already beginning to leak out here with the French private merchant Mons.r boulleron and the aforementioned Armenian godja pogos, which already differs a pretty penny, and who knows now how it stands with the rest, or the other accounts. Furthermore, I cannot agree with His Honor to send a ship thither at present, though as for the broker, I leave the choice entirely to His Honor, and likewise to qualify Mons.r slaers to have access to the cash box under equal accountability, after the example of the Spahan ministers, as well as whatever else His Honor should see fit in that regard in the service of the Honorable Company. Wherefore, concluding my humble advice in this matter, the aforementioned gentlemen residents, after the received transfer, should have kept the remaining cash funds, along with those of the sold merchandise, in their custody, and not have let everything remain together with the broker for so long a time, for those gentlemen cannot have been unaware that the Company's cash monies ran for their account, just as they still ought to continue running for their account in my humble judgment, as was already resolved at the latest secret resolution of 10 June last, and all the more because the first-signatory resident, the Honorable Mr. gutchi, left those funds with the Company's broker on his own private account, without the prior knowledge of the junior merchant and secunde abraham van suchtelen. And as for the importance of the matter, I would gladly with heart and soul wish to retract my departure in order to serve the Company here longer, were it not that my bodily affliction has gained the upper hand and worsened to such an extent that in truth I must think more about the hour of my death than of making further progress in the world, and on that ground I am indeed forced to renounce it, not to mention the little ability that I possess beside it. only the least acknowledgment of debt or the amount thereof from the said late Mr. Beij can be shown, as only the broker From Persia under date 24 August A:o 1735 are thus expressed.

From Persia, under date 24 August, anno 1735. to grasp, and to execute as required, for in my opinion an able individual possessed of somewhat more schooling, but not residing in the blacksmith shop at Gamron, might well be sent thither in order to bring that botched work back to perfection; herewith, Honorable Commanding Sir, he has freely expressed his modest sentiment at Your Honor's esteemed order, in the hope of a favorable interpretation and approval, to the best of his knowledge. Beneath was written: Your Honor's humble, obedient, and faithful servant. Was signed: M.r Heijnitz. In the margin: Gamron, the 7th of July, anno 1735. Respectful reply to the written secret representation submitted by the Honorable Mr. Carel Koenad, merchant and appointed commander of the Persian directorate, to the other members of the Political Council, regarding the precarious state of the subordinate trading post of Bassoura, by the junior merchant and ad interim warehouse master, Willem Meester. Honorable Sir and Commander, Having reviewed and pondered with great attention and the required exactitude Your Honor's esteemed writing and the considerations noted therein, dated 6 July of this year, I shall, for the sake of brevity, first have the honor to answer thereto: that everything alleged by Your Honor concerning the invalidity of the evidence that the late Senior Merchant Dames Heij of blessed memory should owe such a sum—as the roguish broker Moeltjent, if I may call him so, comes to state against this gentleman after his death—rests on fair and no less well-founded reasons; wherefore I shall join my sentiment with Your Honor's and conclude for my part that one cannot recognize the late Mr. Dames Heij of blessed memory to be indebted for any more than his own signed promissory note shall be able to show, or what can be proven with credible documents; for how invalid and sinisterly feigned all the proofs of the broker Moeltjent are will fully appear to Your Honor from the sample where Moeltjent comes to state that he withdrew money from Monsieur Boulleron on account of Mr. Heij (who presently still lies anchored at this roadstead with his ship), whereas nonetheless his declarations and his extract of the account current, in conformity with his maintained merchant's ledger—translated by me—come to indicate the contrary. Honorable Commanding Sir, However clearly, penetratingly, and dispassionately Your Honor's aforementioned written secret representation (a copy of which arrived yesterday evening) has appeared to the undersigned in its coherence, after careful consideration once and several times, he nevertheless finds himself compelled. Advice by way of an answer, given by the undersigned, to the written secret representation of the Honorable Mr. Carel Koenad, merchant and appointed commander of this Persian directorate, for consideration regarding the trading post of Bassoura and its precarious state, dedicated and submitted to the members of the Political Council on the 6th instant. who must or shall compensate the Honorable Company for the monetary damage incurred not only already, but also in the future; in this regard, I also refer to the secret resolution of 10 June last. As concerns Your Honor's sentiment tending toward a beneficial redress for our Lords and Masters regarding the trading post of Bassoura, I can and will very gladly join mine alongside yours; only I shall take the liberty to express to Your Honor that, as for causing Mr. Heijnitz to desist from his request, I cannot well agree to that, because even if this gentleman might be persuaded, he would still have to remain here for a considerable time, for I dare not take upon myself, for my part, the dispatch of this gentleman with a defenseless vessel amidst wartime troubles, as his person would thereby be endangered too much, wherefore the delay in redress, since it cannot be otherwise, will have to take place until the arrival of the ships or further orders from their High Excellencies. To the granting of a third key of the cash box there to Monsieur W:m Slaers I can agree, as being in conformity with the Isfahan maxims; and the choosing and appointing of a new broker at Bassoura I leave entirely to Your Honor, and I shall, with favorable regard, confirm Your Honor's arrangement.
