Besides this very easy comprehension, the cited plenipotentiary of His Highness, the aforementioned Miersa Takkie, exercised extraordinary affection, verbally ordering his own chappar up to twice, just as the Duke of Lhaar also did, to go first to us and not to the British, to the end that we were forewarned that we should not take to heart in the least the most offensive parts contained in that letter, clearly stating moreover that it concerned the other nation; and having had the rulers, namely the said Sultan, Shahbandar, and other friends, likewise effect this through the Company's interpreter and mullah, to our particular obligation and peace of mind, we civilly thanked everyone properly for that courteous and amiable warning, and in serviceable response wrote to Miersa Takkie that it must be known to everyone that in circa 14 months we had sent no ship or vessel to Bassoura, nor received any from there, and therefore could also obtain no news; and concerning the concealing of merchants in our residence, we were as little in the habit of doing so as of transporting their persons and goods elsewhere on our ships to the prejudice of the revenues of the Crown or the Shahbandar, this also being contrary to the well-given orders of our High Noble masters in the subject case; that it had therefore caused us much reflection to hear such an untrue assertion, which at the same time implied that the Company's vessels had been used solely in the service of His Highness; and regarding the keeping ready of a ship or ships for the chosen ambassadors to Hindonstan, we refer to what was recently written to His Excellency in that regard, and upon which he can have little hold. Furthermore, the usurper, under the pretext of restoring his bodily indisposition, has had His Majesty Thamas and his illustrious family escorted from the old prison of Kalaat, a castle of Thamas Chan, to Sja Miersaad situated in Mazandram, and thus imprisoned anew; he also plays sufficiently according to his own arbitrary will with his Prince Sja Abas the 3rd, wanting to bring him from the last-mentioned place to Casbien and have him proclaimed there in the army, but at the same time gives him his eldest son Resa Coelie Chan as ruler of the realm. We have nothing more remarkable to impart than only that, concerning the good tidings of his highness having attained fortune, we have dispatched our congratulations and blessings by a letter addressed to the lord Miersa Takkie simultaneously on the past July, in such manner as the translated copy will be able to show, since we think that such will not be displeasing to his highness, and wherefore we also humbly pray for the worthy approval of your High Noble, Severe, and Greatly Respected Worships. Regarding the affairs at the office in Spahan, we deem it our bounden duty most obediently to bring to the knowledge of your High Noble, Severe, and Greatly Respected Worships that, since the earlier mentioned letter from the ministers of 5 November of the past year could not be resumed earlier than 20 December, their complaint regarding the Spahan broker Heemraeds Ietenelanie on account of the frivolous conduct in not refunding the bill-of-exchange monies properly paid to him by the Honorable Company's brokers Ottumsjent and Issour Das was then taken into consideration. And at the same time, it was undertaken by the principal authority to endeavor to bring him to reason beforehand by means of a serious admonition; no effort being spared to present to him emphatically what good fortune had befallen him and his during the troubles of the realm, both here and at Spahan, 287. It was nevertheless deemed advisable by us to observe the same in that estimate by inquiring of the repeatedly mentioned interpreter Joseph whether the advance of Nagha Sendeldas, the proxy of the said Heemraeds in Spahan, amounting to 8,789 mamudis or 3,735 guilders, 6 stivers, and 8 pence, could bear postponement, or whether it had to be paid. The latter gave in reply that, if it might be, it would be best if he took those monies with him upon his departure; which was then granted, and it was resolved at once to inform the residents thereof as occasion offered, as well as regarding the affairs concerning Lettief Chan, and also the fortification of this office. Thus, through that care employed, we thought to have removed an old stumbling block that had long lain in the way. The report as aforesaid went off, but we received a reply to it that this courtier had nevertheless forged unlawful, yea improper practices, the restitution of a sum of up to 16,680 mamudis or 7,089 guilders not being clean according to the promise made to Nagha, and 289. Coming thus, after taking a reading of the said Spahan letter dated 3 June, together forthwith to weigh that unheard-of matter; and having heard him thereon, and he having found that excuses would not help here now, we having heard enough evasions, etc., we had him civilly arrested. And in the meantime, the banian Dellaram himself being questioned, that heathen declared that he had exercised patience for more than 2 years with the repeatedly mentioned Heemraeds. Thus that courtier had to endure a severe reprimand because by such dissimulation he had caused more contempt for the Honorable Company than all banians could wash away with seawater. And the said Heemraeds was ordered in the presence of the said Dellaram immediately to liquidate everything, and we wished to be assured by Dellaram himself of his true satisfaction in a more honest manner than was previously promised and yet not fulfilled. As was also immediately and shortly thereafter liquidated in full, as appears from our short letter of the last of June, to which we most humbly refer, with the wish that such embroilments may no longer occur. With this, we thought to have provided for everything, and that according to their own request, but those residents, without awaiting our letters and the resolution taken in the matter at hand, changed their stance in further writings of 29 June, which arrived here on the 27th of July last, pretending that sometimes no buyers might appear who would take any parcels of the spices from which the required amount could be derived, in which case they would be greatly embarrassed, therefore requesting, in order to prevent all embarrassment, to be supported with more cash. And since this sudden change leads us to suspect poor management as well as an unfounded calculation by those residents, we have, in our letter of the 3rd of this month, in accordance with our duty, also pointed out to them their ill-advised maxims and the misleading caused thereby, likewise that in case there should be a failure in the delivery of the goods, they would then have to feel the resentment that such conduct merits and naturally brings in its train. However, since they were not yet aware of the authorization to sell the cloths as well, from which a reasonable demand and a fair amount toward the aforementioned purchase may undoubtedly be expected, it could well be that upon the arrival of further reports from those quarters, we will see the premature embarrassment of the servants removed. But should we find that, beyond the 50 tomans, more money might still be needed for the aforementioned purpose, which is undoubtedly going to happen in case our authorization for the sale takes no effect, we shall seek out a safe opportunity to furnish it. In the frequently mentioned letter of the residents of 3 June, a petition was submitted by the bookkeeper and provisional head Mattheus van Leijpsigh to obtain his discharge from that quarter, and also that, through the widespread benevolence of Your High Noblenesses, Valiant, Highly Esteemed, he might graciously be employed in one or another vacant post following the change caused in the ministry here; requesting us in that letter to strengthen the same petition with our recommendation regarding him when transmitting it to Your High Noblenesses. The powerful lord Miersa Takkie afterwards making his entry into Spahan on 1 June, intending to travel up to the army to His Highness, was properly welcomed by the residents, and paid a visit on 9 ditto, pursuant to which he also returned the courtesy the next day to the servants, and according to their letters of 16 ditto, repeatedly showed himself extremely pleased and civil in all his expressions and actions in both visits. For in the first, upon the resident's representation regarding the great danger that resided in dispatching ships against the monsoon (having been informed and brought to mind the case of Alie Merdoem Chan by the provisional authority in private writings of 20 May), he showed the obtained satisfactory resolution of His Highness upon his own written representation made when he had been in loco and was informed of everything, containing the postponement of the voyage until a better time, and had an order written to those ambassadors not to cause any difficulties regarding this matter at present, as he very politely promised the resident and also sent to him. We shall likewise make use of this if required. In the return visit, his fulfillment of his made promises—just as the satisfaction taken therewith is touched upon in the journal under 11 March—became even more apparent; and as chance would have it, the said Joseph Sahid had also arrived at the same time, being 10 June, with a report about the road toll pretensions suffered at Lhaar, regarding which provision could well be made in the presence of His Excellency Miersa Takkie, fearing it would yet cause difficulties in the course of time, etc. The cited interpreter had also narrated the extortions that the Honorable Company's native servants had to suffer now and then in loco. To commend ourselves, the time of our longing passed more and more, and having arrived at the reconsideration of the findings concerning Noordwijkerhout on the 5th of March thereafter, it was brought to the proposal what the council thought more advisable in these times: whether to send this vessel, which had nearly finished its caulking, to Baussoura at present, or to proceed to the discharging of the other ship, Valkenisse, since, on account of the shortage of vessels, at least one of the two had to remain idle. On this, everyone judged, for those and other motives expressed in that resolution, it to be most convenient and accurate to have the last-mentioned vessel discharged, and in the meantime to have the other put properly in order. Following this unanimous decision, a start was presently made with the discharging, and while we were further still looking out for the advices from Bassoura, we very unexpectedly had the misfortune of being unheard-of obstructed in almost all our affairs and endeavors by an abominable smuggling trade in nutmegs discovered on the aforesaid Noordwijkerhout on the 7th of April thereafter, of which a most respectful report will be made hereafter, which went more to heart than before. All of us being very much hindered by the lack of elucidation from the Bassoura ministers, and now seeing our hands tied even more, we obtained on the 13th of that month the opportunity to give them information of everything, sending our duplicate missive of the 21st of February preceding. Meanwhile, the ship Valkenisse was discharged, and upon its presented findings on the 5th of May, also concerning the Bassoura trading post, it was still hoped by us that some report would finally turn up from that quarter, in order to see removed our embarrassment over the situation there and what one might safely undertake here in this regard. But, God mend it, that good fortune was not to be ours, since a few days after that estimation, very thoughtful reports were received concerning Lettieff Chan's design, set in motion by order of Thammas Cchan, to wrest that city from the Turk, all of which has mostly been presented very humbly beforehand and at large in the resolution of the 8th of that month, to which we humbly refer.
