Delft. As a continuation of this, and the more-mentioned report by Rithem now coming over as duplicate letters, we shall... Original Middelburg in Zeeland. Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, Wise, Prudent, Most Generous, and Far-Ruling Lords and Masters. Since the dispatch of our last humble letter dated 30th September 1735 to Bassoura, and from there via the ordinary overland route most respectfully addressed to Your Right Honorable Excellencies, the daily changes and vicissitudes of this realm, which is still experiencing unrest, have for a long time provided nothing other than mere historical material. Because the reports thereof were often uncertain, we did not consider it expedient last year to bring this to Your Right Honorable Excellencies' honored knowledge by means of such costly vessels. However, since the notorious Thames Chan made himself completely master of the Persian throne and, as a formidable and dreaded King, placed its crown upon his own head with great magnificence and under the newly assumed names of Nadir Tjah and Wellie Nhamed on 5 March of the past year in Schoel Maghon (located approximately 50 days' journey above Spahan), many substantial matters have occurred with which Your Right Honorable Excellencies' precious interests are connected. We have already provided a full account of these in our modest letters of 10 December 1736 and 4 April last, successively dispatched to Their Excellencies the Right Honorable High Indian Government at Batavia via the ships Stadwijk and Rithem. To the contents of these letters we humbly refer for brevity's sake, hoping and wishing that the copy of the first (since only the transcript of the latter is enclosed herewith) may have been brought to Your Right Honorable Excellencies from that capital before the receipt of this letter. We therefore have, by these our humble letters, in a concise manner, only to communicate to Your Right Honorable Excellencies with due respect the most essential points of what has occurred in this realm since the departure of the cited vessels, both in respect of trade and otherwise, and to state at the outset: that on the 28th of the past month of March we were exceptionally gladdened by the safe, albeit late, appearance at this roadstead of the ships 't Huijs te Foreest and the yacht Anthonia, which departed from Batavia on 5 October of the past year bound hither with their cargoes amounting to the sum of ƒ246645:3:—. We have re-embarked a large portion of those merchandises, together with some other goods that had been in our stock, amounting to the sum of ƒ116990: 7: —, onto the last-named small vessel, in order to now undertake the voyage, under God's guidance, to the residency of Bassoura with them as well as these our respectful dispatches. We shall have the honor of giving a further account of all this in the continuation of this letter, after we have first inserted here, in the hope of Your Right Honorable Excellencies' favorable interpretation, and answered most obediently in the margin regarding what concerns this directorship, the excerpts sent to us recently by the Right Honorable High Indian Government of Batavia from Your Right Honorable Excellencies' much-respected general missive. In continuation of this, and the aforementioned report sent via Ritherus with the present copies of letters, your Right Worshipful Lordships will be pleased to note that as these were sold by our competitors and other native merchants here for 15½ to 16 mahmudis per man, which can differ to our benefit or detriment, and have found a reasonable vent in these regions. Regarding Mocha coffee trees, we can report to your Right Worshipful Lordships in all respect that the same for several years past have [illegible] Babylon [illegible] that the residents do not continuously [illegible] suppose [illegible] that sort of turbans [illegible] 180 to 1 [illegible] having necessarily been obliged to present to His Majesty and other court dignitaries, may find your kind approval. In Persia, the Mocha servants say in their marginal notes on our letters dated 18 August 1733 that to alleviate our grief, which we profess to feel thereat, we are in good hope. But that the Company must also fall behind other nations in the vent of coffee is not easy to pass over, and we would therefore still judge it to be of service to make a new trial with the ships Het Huijs te Foreest and Anthonia, which arrived from Batavia. This shows us beyond doubt how much coffee other nations manage to vend in Persia, whereas the Persian ministers formerly reported to us with respect to the sale of coffee beans that there is nothing to be done in Persia for the Honourable Company. So that we finally, by our letter of 14 September 1731, were compelled to order that the coffee brought to Persia, which had remained lying there as unsaleable, should be returned to us via Ceylon here to the Fatherland. With the trade at Basra matters are not much better, and the reports both regarding the demand for coffee and that for woollens are, according to what the ministers mention in their letter of 30 April 1734, equally unfavourable. It is only said that they are still in uncertainty as to how it will turn out with the fine nettle cloths, painted and embroidered spreads, and woollen stockings which were likewise recommended to us by knowledgeable persons to order from Bengal and Surat to be sold in the Turkish empire, since the ministers say they have as yet had no experience thereof, so that this will have to await time, and we meanwhile wish to hope for the best. Under known frivolous pretexts, the duty on imported goods went quite tranquilly and smoothly into operation in this territory. Your Right Worshipful Lordships will be pleased kindly to consider that almost all woollens are consumed in the cold or northern parts of this realm, where they are also brought by means of the navigation that the Russians conduct along the Volga across the Caspian Sea, as we have been informed here. We must confess to be exceedingly surprised, as we did not enter into the intention to send such woollens to Persia except upon the advice and strong urgings of certain merchants here, who even took the trouble [illegible].

Further Extract from the above under the matter of Bengal: We have seen with pleasure that your Honors could pay so much attention to the Persian peijsas coin, which after tests taken [illegible] of that coin to the Persian trade much good, where currently it is also in a bad enough state. Still further Extract from the above under the matter of Ceylon: That the gold trade on Madura began to flourish again and that upon the exchange of 9385 ducat pieces against gold panums in two parcels a sum of ƒ13244. 15. 8. was profited, has also appeared agreeable to us; but while the quantity of those converted ducats is not very large, and your Honors had ordered the Colombo ministers by missive of 25 August 1733 to send 19129 pieces of that gold specie, as being out of employment there, to Cochin, it seems strange to us that the said ministers, in their latest requisition of necessities from the fatherland of 25 November of the same year, newly demand 50000 pieces again, whereas one should certainly know how costly it is to send gold from here to the Indies, and that the profit made in such a way upon exchanging ducats for panums cannot outweigh the more expensive purchase of the gold in Europe and the risk of the sea to which one is moreover subject; it will then indeed be worth the trouble that a merchant calculation be made regarding this and at the same time taken into consideration. Gold species are becoming scarcer and scarcer in this realm, whether at the Coast of Madura it could not be managed with Persian ducats, pagodas, and new [illegible] of which we have sent [illegible] for trial with the ship [illegible] to Batavia, circulate also very little, or other gold species of the Indies, just as well as with European ducats, and which of the two is judged to be most profitable for the Honorable Company, whereupon we will await your Honors' consideration. And whereas this, through express deputies in the presence of the frequently mentioned fiscal of this directorship, was accomplished according to duty by a report under offer of oath concerning the said deficit of 4 lb. and their entire proceeding, and having had the very easy matter cited above executed not only according to human possibility, but also permitting no change to be made regarding the said 20000 lb. until, as we humbly stated in the matter of the silk, other qualifications might be obtained. Concerning and including the 80691 lb. of powder sugar, 19663 lb. of candy sugar, and 12500 lb. of bar iron left in the said vessel, resting together on some planks serving as their foundation, we take the liberty respectfully to report that this was done in order to have the small vessel depart further as soon as possible, as with a complete unloading and reloading it would undoubtedly have been delayed for several weeks yet; and also that it is not such an exceedingly large quantity as to think that the Bassoura ministers would be at a loss with its sale, or might become overcrowded upon unloading to store it. Yet in such a case it were indeed to be lamented, and according to our humble opinion it would be most advisable, on the return of that vessel, to have it call at Bhendker a Boucher at least with those 3 sorts along with some other piece goods (as has often been practiced by the English and also the French interloping traders, because it is not far out of the way), in order to inquire there, in passing, through the Merchant and Principal Trade Bookkeeper, the Honorable Abraham van Suchtelen, how matters might stand regarding the sale of merchandise, to the end that upon his arrival in loco we may better calculate together what might be required to the greatest interest of Your Noble High Mightinesses; the ministers having now also been informed of what is necessary concerning this delicate point, having no doubt that they will conduct themselves properly accordingly.
