From Souratta, dated 20th April 1716 Opened, and found therein the following papers: An original missive dated 30th March last, dispatched by and to the aforementioned. A copy of a missive dated 21st November of the past year, already received via an English ship. A copy dated 19th March via the French vessel named Le Brigantin via Cochin, written to Their High Noble Rigorous Grand Venerable Lordships of the High Indian Government at Batavia. Two extracts from the Spanish missive written to the ministers at Gamron dated 16th March, concerning some news to His High Nobility Thamas Chan. Three extracts from and to the same as just written, dated 8th March 1736. A translated copy of a Persian petition written by the commissioners Jeffie Chan Beecq and Mhamed Saijid Beecq to His Highness Thamas Chan, dated 11th December of the past year. A copy of a missive written by the commander Carel Koenad dated 15th December of the past year to His Highness Thamas Chan (wackiel douleth), plenipotentiary of the entire Persian Empire. A From Souratta, dated 20th April 1736 A copy of a Persian raqam dispatched by His Highness Thamas Chan to the said commander. A translated copy of a Persian missive written by the lord Miersa Backie Albeschik of His Highness Thamas Chan from Ispahan to the aforementioned commander. An extract from the daily journal, and An original invoice of what was sent along via the aforementioned vessel for this directorship. All of which aforementioned documents were decided to have the appendices sent on to Their High Nobilities at a later date, as it is feared that the French ship Le Brigantin, sailing undoubtedly via Malabar to Bengal, might suffer hindrance through the power of the lord over Cannogie Angria; and although we have already been forced by various obstacles to hold the Company's vessels longer than the desire of Their Noble Venerable the Lords of the High Indian Government, it is nevertheless judged necessary in this session not to delay the dispatch of our vessels any longer than until the 19th. The departure of the ships Nieuw Walcheren and Hofvliet—the first via Malabar or Tuticorin, and the other directly to the headquarters of the Indies—having been fixed for the 19th instant, but as we could not get ready with the leave-taking as well as with the papers on account of continuous interruptions any earlier than on the present date, the writings have already been reviewed in draft in council, and signed in copy, with the wish that the said vessels may obtain a speedy and safe voyage. Honorable, Venerable, Valiant, Wise, Prudent, Having had the honor on the 25th of March of this year to send to Your Honorable Venerable via Batavia the transcripts of our humble letters, dispatched to Their High Nobilities the High Indian Government successively on various dates, under cover of such a letter as this present one accompanies in copy, we now, on the occasion of the French ship Chandernagore sailing to Your Honorable Venerable's directorship, send a part of this year's description, From Souratta, dated 20th April contained in the missive of 30th November last, to which are also bound three others which we have had the honor of dispatching to our aforementioned high masters on the dates 6th April, 30th October, and 13th November, to which we obligingly refer regarding the present state of trade etc. in this administration. Since the dispatch of our aforementioned humble letter, we have been honored with Your Honorable Venerable's esteemed letter dated 20th April of this year, namely on the 8th of August with the duplicate, and on the 25th of December following with the original, accompanied by all the appendices listed in the enclosed register, for the provision of which we heartily thank Your Honorable Venerable, as the first signatory also finds himself particularly much obliged for Your Honorable Venerable's kind wishes with regard to him, having since been confirmed in the supreme administration by the goodness of the aforementioned high Indian rulers and 602. From Surat under date 20 April Honorable, Valiant, Right-Esteemed, Courageous, Wise, Very Generous Lord and Gentlemen, From the hands of the free merchant Monsieur Mousset there was handed to us Your Honorable Esteemed original mis- sive of 26 March, in which we have seen that there is no hope at all for the Honorable Company of obtaining satisfaction for the debt charged to the late imam, Nacho sale Halebij, amounting to 1000 Spanish Reals, for which the broker Wirsinsie is guarantor, which debt in time would indeed have been paid had the Governor not ordered that the outside brokers should also enjoy the ½ percent brokerage that was withheld for his account on the sold merchandise in reduction of his debit, who since the year 1729 have enjoyed only 1 percent, and 605. From Surat under date 20 April 1736 our contracts were also concluded in that manner, for the brokerage is 1½ percent in total. Everything here is in ruin; contracts are made and broken as suits their interest. Last year, in an almost tyrannical manner, they forced us to grant on loan 5000 Spanish Reals, which will have to be settled against the tolls. With the arrival of the ship Ypenroode, we were forced to unload it, whereas we had resolved, in accordance with authorization, to send the ship with its full cargo at the disposal of Your Honors, because trade has never been so constrained as now by the cabal of the Governor, who is the head thereof, to the ruin of the trade, just as the sale of the Company's goods this year was very meager, along with many other difficult and fatal incidents, detailed at length in From Surat under date 20 April the copy of our most humble letter of late, departing to the said Their High Mightinesses at Batavia, which we have the honor to present to Your Honors alongside this letter. On the ship Ypenroode, the Junior Merchant Ioan Alfonse de Caillou arrived here as third resident, and Their High Mightinesses have seen fit to transfer the third resident Ras Macquet to Ceylon, to await employment there, who crosses over with the aforesaid poorly laden vessel, to our regret, because we were unable to obtain coffee against the fixed price of 11 stivers per pound in ready money, and therefore had to ballast the same with sand. Regarding the debt of Resident Akersloot, amounting to Rds 62:—:— to the soldier Siebenhaar, he remitted last year that much cash to Batavia to satisfy the same. 607. From Souratta under date 20 April 1736 We therefore, while expressing our gratitude for the advice provided to the aforementioned Mr. Geike, made known our intention, and also offered, whenever he had anything to order, to send the same across with our vessel; whereupon he made promises, and moreover let it be known that he would at once send only a letter of pre-advice to Captain Robaarts instructing him to wait until the arrival of the said vessel. Finding ourselves thus reassured, we subsequently take this opportunity to give Your Esteemed Honors notice of the safe arrival of Your Esteemed Honors' pleasant letter under date of 9 April of this year, accompanied by a copy of the letter dated 27 March previously addressed to the High Noble, Right Honorable, Great Esteemed gentlemen at Batavia, together with 72 pieces of bunting of various sorts, all safely received on 2 June last to our pleasure and obligation, both on account of its accurate delivery and concerning the civil congratulations with regard to the first signatory of this letter, which were pleasantly noted and received by Your Esteemed Honors. The principal news in this region consists of extortions and the rejection of all previous good usages. The fortunate Thamas Khan has again ventured a battle with only 12 thousand men against 300,000 Turks near Kars, situated not far from the fortress, and nevertheless triumphed, completely beating the Ottomans, obtaining the entire artillery, baggage, and war chest, so that everyone must be astonished at his enterprises and successes. The wealth he has gained cannot be calculated, but it is certain that he has now become much more arrogant. By the English ship Richmond we had the honor to write to your Honor under date of 12 December of last year, and although we do not doubt in the least its good delivery, a copy thereof is nevertheless annexed hereto, referring to which we inform your Honor that their Excellencies the High Government of the Netherlands Indies at Batavia have been pleased, by their honored missives dated 8 October of the past year, to order that a vessel which is destined for your Honor's directorship via Gale, in order to call at this Commandment after taking in 400000 lb of areca, shall be laden here with 200000 lb of pepper, as your Honor will further learn from an extract of the above-mentioned missive accompanying this. Honorable, Respected, Valiant, Wise, very Generous Sir and Friends. Since the English ship Prince of Wales according to report is due to sail tonight or tomorrow for your parts, and we have thereby obtained the opportunity to share with your Honors the principal occurrences since our humble letters of the 5th and 21st of November of the past year, we seize the same by first dutifully and friendly referring to the copies of the aforementioned letters annexed hereto for greater certainty, although we heartily wish that their originals, together with the goods they carried, may have been delivered to and received by your Honors long before the receipt of this. Concerning this realm and its precarious state, we have given a small report in a humble letter on the 19th instant to their High Excellencies via a small French vessel named Le Brigantien, via Cochin; we shall nevertheless, if time only permits, not fail hereafter to set ourselves obediently to a more intelligible and clearer detail, considering that that opportunity was not deemed secure enough to effect this. Requesting therefore that your Honors meanwhile refer to that copy and be assured that as soon as we have succeeded in the said obligatory undertaking, we shall appropriate the first opportunity for the dispatch thereof. And in case the first-named has had himself declared King, many tangles and adversities will undoubtedly be caused by Mirza Takkie, since having now been appointed Duke of Dukes over the lowlands and being inclined to extortions of old, he will also know how to invent new ruses with his new character. However, we wish he may never return here and the Honorable Company may just remain free of vexation. From the enclosed translations your Honors will also be able to perceive the particulars corresponded and conducted between His Highness and us after the conclusion of the Diu commission, in the hope that the Almighty will be pleased to bless the end thereof to the prosperity of the Honorable Company. Thus, moving from this hope and wish, we shall pass over to the communication 681. The principal matter contained therein has for the most part been answered by the above-mentioned letter, thus leaving us only to express our thanks for the trouble Your Honorable Worships were pleased to take in recommending our interests to the Dessaij Raderje at Oeclisse, as well as for approving the loan by our masters to the nabab Mominchan, which we assure Your Honorable Worships could not be refused without causing displeasure, for otherwise, without necessity, to deprive ourselves, and that all the more during the journey upcountry, where nothing was to be had, although truly contrary to the orders of Their High Excellencies, who we nevertheless hope will be pleased to show the same consideration in this matter as Your Honorable Worships. The surgeon is expected daily, and as is believed shortly with the nabab himself, who is about to depart from here to collect a general assessment of the villages still in existence. Meanwhile, under the Lord's blessing, a beginning has been made with the new work of procurement, and yesterday for the first time with the bazaar, in conformity with Your Honorable Worships' granted authorization and agreed prices according to the present condition of the times, under a serious recommendation to the suppliers to show their utmost diligence for an abundant delivery of the best quality goods, which they then promised to effectuate to the utmost of their ability. However, it is a very unfortunate matter that, to facilitate this, because of the unrest that has arisen, there is hardly any money to be had there, just as little as here, except against an excessive loss of 3½ per cent.
