From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. The ship Stadwijk completed, and it having been noted by arrest on the same day that in this direction there were still found 293 heads, to wit: 127 here on shore 6 at the outer offices 108 on the ship Stadwijk 52 on the ship Ritthem 293 as stated; and whereas upon investigation into how many in this sorrowful climate have once again since the last of June 1735 until the said muster departed this life and absented themselves by flight, there was found to our sorrow a number of up to 73 heads, namely: 42 deceased on this shore 2 deserted from the toll of Daterque on the 13th of September 1 carpenter, and on the voyage from Batavia hither 3 soldiers deceased 20 on the Stadwijk since the 24th of November 1 sailor from that vessel deserted at Mascat 4 deceased on the ship Ritthem, namely 2 here in the roads and 2 on the way to Bassora 73 persons as above; and the annexes to this go properly accompanying the rolls of the said completed muster, to which we humbly refer. Concerning the codicillary procurations, or wills, of which no detailed account has yet been given here in this document, which have served in council here after the death of some persons, we beg permission to touch upon how these were successively reviewed and inspected, to wit: in the resolution of the 28th of January of the current year, two, namely one of the aforementioned Fiscal I: Bout, and of Sergeant Jan Barentsz Steenhuijsen; in the resolution of the 23rd of July, the disposition of Sergeant Albert Meere, though the approval thereof was made conditional, so as to support the head surgeon as proxy with someone else, and thus cause the matters in Batavia to be accounted for through trustworthy men, we considered ourselves obliged to make mention thereof in that respect. In the resolution of the 23rd of August is inserted the testament of the deceased assistant Jacob Meijnhold Hollman, and the heir Jacob Carelsz, frequently mentioned herein, was admitted according to his petition to be able to accept the estate under benefit of inventory; and finally, in the resolution of the 1st of November is embodied the testament of the deceased and aforementioned dispenser Jan Verhellouw, deceased, and after review held, it was found not to be contrary to law, and therefore, in hope of approval, was also approved. By the aforementioned minute book, it will be pleased to be observed how the house locksmith of this shore, Jan de Meijer of Rotterdam, had his wage increased on the 28th of January of this year from 14 to 20 guilders per month; and during our assessment on the 26th of March thereafter, a letter from the Reverend Gentlemen of the Diaconate, dated Batavia the 7th of June of the past year, addressed to the deceased Honorable Authority Danies Heij and entrusted for delivery to the skipper Jan Bauritius, but not received earlier than on the said meeting day, opened therefore that honored letter, and found therein that to his debit, together with a blacksmith, Jan Maas, deceased in this place on the 22nd of May 1735, they were jointly lawfully indebted for the benefit of the free burgher of Batavia a sum of 100 rixdollars at 18 stivers each, and of which money this person, out of charity, has relinquished and given to the diaconate poor there; having thus found ourselves obliged, at Their Reverences' fair request, to apply everything in our power that we might master that money, not only that, but also might discover the reason why that debt had not yet been settled. We therefore reviewed at the said meeting all documents appertaining hereto, caused the paymasters, together with the cited Jan de Meijer, to appear in the meeting concerning his pretense that he had been made sole universal heir by the testamentary disposition of his mate Jan Maas /inserted in the resolution of the 13th of June 1734:/ and pointed out to the debtor how he had transgressed; with the widow of the deceased, besides the non-payment of such a lawfully enjoyed amount. The pay-bookkeepers excused themselves for knowing nothing else in the world of that affair than that they, according to testamentary law, had to defer to it after it had been approved, and he had also never approached anyone to make the estate known by inventory; and however much trouble was taken, no one could be found who could stand with peace of mind as witnesses to his administration. Wherefore, after everything that could only serve as evidence had been seen and the said Jan de Meijer was found to be embroiled in such a delicate point through apparent stupidity, and yet might well be required further in court, the same was here first ordered to pay the said 100 rixdollars, and furthermore half of his wage was attached for the benefit of the widow, named Johanna van Hoorn, residing in Zwolle, with a very humble request to Your High Nobly Stern Grand Worships to interpret this for us most graciously and for the best, if in our case we may not have acted rightly out of ignorance of the laws; and because he has also become a troublesome person of his own accord, and in this place seemed otherwise destined to remain unpaid, we have, in humble hope of a favorable interpretation, deemed it most responsible to release the same immediately and send him aboard the Stadwijk, in order to prevent him from deserting with all of it, although we have never perceived any evil in his past life, departing now with that vessel; and herewith the copies of the aforementioned letter and our humble reply to the well-mentioned Their Reverences, accompanied by the said 100 rixdollars properly sealed and noted on the invoice in all humility.

From Persia, 10 December Anno 1736. humbly praying that the care thereof may be graciously ordered by Your High Excellencies. Furthermore, concerning the judicial administration, we must quite humbly report that regarding the aforementioned 3 deserters, namely Fector du Rougemont of Charlois and Anthonij Polison of Basel, soldiers from this shore, known by the resolution of 21 September of the past year, and Jan Baptista Clemenci of Dieppe, sailor, who escaped to Muscat from Stadwijk and was cited in the resolution of the 1st of November following; all our dutiful diligence to recover these scoundrels was indeed employed, but has actually still been fruitless. However, the latter only needs to set foot again in Muscat, and according to the honorable promise of the Imam there, recorded in the resolution of 28 February, he will certainly fall into the hands of the judge and undoubtedly receive his deserved punishment as an example to other villains. Concerning the two aforementioned soldiers, the inquiries made with both the English and the French were answered with denials; and the latter being held the most suspect, we resolved by the aforementioned decree of 21 September From Persia, 10 December Anno 1736. 21 September to do our best to take some of their people into the Company's service if possible, and thereby also let them experience that one is not at a loss concerning the use of the lex talionis. The provisional assistant Ian Lucasz., somewhat overly drunk and thereby having been so thoughtless as to give one of his comrades an awkward slap with a porcelain saucer, and moreover having uttered bad words, following examination of these matters in court, the sentence fell on 29 February degrading him to soldier, and he was placed on Stadwijk; but his manifold expressions of repentance and sorrow, promise of improvement, etc., having aroused commiseration, the same was again pardoned by the honorable judicial Council, and by us, subject to Your High Excellencies' benign approval, restored to his former service and taken ashore, to be seen in the resolution of 3 September last. However, two common soldiers, through drink and improper mutual insolence which they exchanged behind the guard or in this lodge, finally ended with the striking of one named Ian Somp, who, drawing his sword against Christoffel Heijts, slightly wounded him; but both nevertheless received their reward between the pikes, stationed for 3 days each, under the marlions /: for whose favorable dispatch we are also very humbly obliged :/, so that they now live quite politely with one another again, and we also enjoy quiet. From Persia the 10th of December Anno 1736. have petitioned and obtained such decisions as we shall most obediently yet briefly cite here. Emanuel Stips, under-surgeon on shore, relieved when a capable subject is obtained to serve as his replacement. Jan Durietsz of Ritthem permitted to exchange with Adriaan Lourensz on Stadwijk. Jan Peper, sailor on Ritthem, promoted to quartermaster on his running contract at 13 guilders per month. In the course of this, others were also helped upon humble request and proposal, namely Christiaan Kreger, boatswain's mate on Stadwijk, appointed in place of the late boatswain on that vessel, Jacob Sietjes, of blessed memory, at 17 guilders per month on his running contract, to succeed Jurriaan Hendrik Beijeman on Ritthem by exchange; and Pieter Harmensz of Hubden, sailor, has become boatswain's mate in the former's place on Stadwijk, with an advance to 12 guilders per month on his running contract. And whereas Johan Spitselaar, sergeant, because of his particularly sickly physical condition and thus out of pure 437. From Persia the 10th of December Anno 1736. pure commiseration, was discharged on the first of this month and placed on Stadwijk, so to fill the vacancy, after deliberation upon their respectful requests pro rata on the 25th instant, we also permitted to advance, namely: Willem Linderman, corporal, to sergeant at 20 guilders per month under a new contract of 3 years. Francois de la Rouelle, of Ransel, from soldier to corporal, enjoying the emoluments appertaining thereto and on condition of serving out his contract in that manner. The judicial matter concerning Hendrik Dupree, aforementioned here, having been decided today, and on account of infirmity a pecuniary instead of a corporal or civil punishment was imposed, with the costs and expenses specified in writing; this being concluded, the Batavia church deaconry poor have now received 2 months' wages or 14 guilders in the poor box, and Stadwijk has gained one more sailor. We further hold ourselves most obediently to the trial documents regarding him and other persons collected here and annexed hereto. Your High From Persia the 10th of December Anno 1736. Demand, and whereas also the trade, salary, and further annual account books of 1735 and 1736 have been prepared, these will keep company with those of 1734/1735, together with all translations that were in arrears up to 57 pieces, making with those that were prepared on the aforementioned date a total of 191 pieces. Item, the amount of the deceased estates in the recently closed financial year amounting to mamudis 6740, guilders 2664:10:-, which added to those of anno 1734/1735 aforementioned, 42645, 18124:2:8, totals mamudis 49385, guilders 20988:12:8, humbly praying to gratify the one and the other with Your High Excellencies' sufficient and honored order for their distribution. In the aforementioned resolution of the 4th of this month having been exhibited the written report promised on the aforementioned date by the under-merchant and provisional fiscal of this directorship, Christoffel de Haan, regarding the excerpting of Your High Excellencies' gracious orders, and how the same had not yet been able to be put into obedient effect by him, praying in that regard very submissively to be permitted to refer to the resolutions of the ultimate of July and 12 September, as the obliged commemoration was made therein. We have, to our joy, learned from the ministers in Surat, by letter of 2 November last, of the delivery and forwarding of our humble letter of 20 March to Your High Excellencies, with the added report that there the aurum pigmentum lost 61 15/16 and lapis tutia gave a profit of 43 1/16 per cent; but since, in addition to that, 2½ per cent in toll would have to be paid, it seemed, to our regret, not advisable to undertake anything of note with that merchandise, as can be seen from the enclosed copies of the said received writings, to which we humbly refer. Regarding the delicate Kirman livestock, since their embarkation, through no one's fault, 3 young goats have perished, whereby the number has decreased from 90 to 87, leaving now only 1 ram above the exact requirement, of which the officers have also been notified in the ship's instruction with such admonition as Your High Excellencies' strict order entailed. One of the blacksmiths stationed on this coast named Gerrit de beer of uijtrecht having petitioned to be improved in salary with the representation that from his present earning of f 14 per month because of the extra high cost of the necessary maintenance he could not subsist here, the same, taking into account his diligent service and demonstrated ability in the completed repair, wherein indeed each of the journeymen applied their best efforts according to their capacity, and that his term had also expired, was increased with unanimous votes to f 20 per month under a new 3-year contract commencing today, 10 August, according to the deed already obtained and our humble petition instituted on his behalf in the dispatched humble letter to the well-mentioned Their Right Excellencies the High Indian Government. The visible shortage in number to constitute extraordinary commissioners in unforeseen cases and also the capability of the available secretariat clerks having prompted us more than once to search for capable youths among the people stationed here and on the ships in order to learn whom one might accept with good expectations and allow to transfer to the service of the pen, thereupon a young sailor from our navy named Ian Tjerksten came forward and at the same time his request for that transfer was taken into consideration, as he had always proven himself of a sober and eager conduct and it was not without hope that good services would soon be obtained from him, his petition was thus avowed and he was discharged from the sailor's service and placed as provisional assistant. From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1726. Commissioners expressly appointed for that purpose proceeded to the Honorable Company spice warehouse, and in the presence of the junior merchant and provisional warehouse master the Honorable Willem Meester, opened a sukel of mace there, which was found by us to be good and well conditioned, having weighed the same here on the scale, as follows: marked sukel number 168 lb gross 147 lb net 21 lb tare, which the sukel weighs in itself, so that according to the packing slip annexed hereto a true underweight was found of 14 lb net mace, as 161 lb net according to the said slip 147 lb found here, therefore 14 lb net pounds of mace short, or true underweight. Honorable, Most Worshipful Ruler, and Honorable Sirs, hoping that we shall have accomplished this our commission satisfactorily, we take the liberty with the utmost respect to be, stood below, Your Honors obedient, humble, and obliged servants, was signed, Pieter Pruymelaar and Pieter Sonneveldt; in the middle, in my presence, signed, Willem Meester. In the margin: Gamron, the 19 September 1735. Thus it was noted here regarding this, the found underweight of this amounting to 14 lb, and with the sukel number 77 mentioned before, observed the same short 19 and a half lb, together amounting to 33 and a half lb. Likewise, in obedient compliance as above, it was resolved to write off that quantity, as it still pertains to the current trade books of 1734/5, to the profit and loss account, and since the very same persons, as express commissioners, had handled both of these sukels, the question arose how one should now act responsibly regarding the administration of the oath decreed for this purpose; reflection was likewise made upon this, the necessary matters concerning it were taken into consideration with the factors, and finally, everything having been produced that could serve in the subject case, it was judged satisfactory to exempt the aforementioned Honorable Meester, as warehouse master, upon his offer thereof, because he had been away from those commissioners since the sukel had been aired, and also had not been present; but on the contrary, the oath was imposed both on the ordinary and extraordinary commissioners, so that none of them showed even the slightest hesitation about it, but calmly and properly it was solemnly accomplished by each of them. The junior merchant and warehouse master mentioned here before having made a report on the 7th of this month of a pack of patchamchannys, large Bengal sort, known as number 64, found to be stained, and opened also according to custom in the presence of the Honorable Company brokers, and 54 pieces of unmerchantable goods having been observed therein, it was at the same time unanimously thought best, according to ancient custom, upon assurance from the said brokers that the same could be made good again by washing, to have those pieces set aside and handed over for cleaning when one might be able to trust something outside the house with a little more peace of mind than at present; which is recorded here in order to take further proper note of the outcome of this matter in due time, just as is now done by general approval on account of the inevitable acknowledgment given to the bearer of His Highness warrant inserted here before, the Yuzbashi, Captain, Ned Jaffebeecq, dated the 6th of this month, for 101 guilders and 13 stivers, and consisting of the following, namely: 10 pieces European ducats at 18 mahmudis each comes to 180 mahmudis, 76 guilders and 10 stivers. 3 pieces chintz in assorted sorts, to wit: 1 piece ambersia, cost price 8 guilders and 18 stivers, selling price 14 guilders, 17 stivers, and 8 pence. 1 piece bolidaar, cost price 7 guilders, 14 stivers, and 8 pence, selling price 12 guilders, 6 stivers, and 8 pence. 1 piece moeramath, cost price 8 guilders, 10 stivers, and 8 pence, selling price 12 guilders and 15 stivers. After having received your Honor's esteemed orders, I went to the French gentlemen in order, in the capacity of fiscal because the Honorable Jan Bout was indisposed, to demand back two of our deserted soldiers, whom upon good and sufficient indications we knew to be on board with them, or else that we would further show our resentment. Whereupon the commanding first officer replied that he had come from Atchin that evening, but that as soon as he received the report he had sent on board, and it was reported to him that they were not on his ship.
