Invited, they deliberated on one thing and another on the first mentioned day, and learned from the skipper Ian Elewout that the said bottom had been stuck fast on its anchor in the Basra river, but not being able to know whether it might have sustained any damage thereby, as nothing had yet been observed, wherefore it was immediately ordered to have the same inspected by one or two good divers, but as those people have also now taken part with the fleeing natives on account of the cruel violence of the rulers, one must have patience until they appear again, or in the event of their continued absence, until something is learned of extra leakage or other means keeping us suspicious, it was further resolved to make as much haste with the unloading as possible, and after the said writings have been read by everyone, compared, and confronted with the residents' booklets, then to take them into the assembly with all attention for further consideration, the inspection of the ship having furthermore been duly carried out by the junior merchant and frequently mentioned provisional fiscal Christoffel Dehaan in the presence of two specially commissioned judicial members. From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. indicated; at least we considered all those writings on the 23rd of the aforementioned month of October, and found it extremely expedient, in our reply to the cited Lord Mhamet Tackie Chan, to make our astonishment known that one would not gladly be implicated in matters of which one is both innocent and ignorant, and that a distinction should also indeed be found between our conduct and that of the other nations, etc. We also properly enlightened the Lord Mhamed Zamoen Beecq, who showed himself very modest yet affable and therefore also caused many of the most persistent difficulties to disappear, explaining that goods belonging to any persons had never been brought under the Company's name, etc. Whereupon the same gave promises that he would also instruct his cousin, the esteemed sea captain, about everything, in order to dissuade the said secretary from such methods, with full declaration that he had indeed heard such things of the English, but never of us, and therefore he had firmly formed the opinion that this must be the fault of the writer. And for the rest, we showed in that letter, by sending the copy of what we had agreed upon on the 21st of May 1734 with the then general Thamas Coeliethan, at that time named Thamasbeecq, and how far our ability extends. Item, we referred, among other things, to the report of his cousin Mhamet Zamoenbeecq, whom we kept in friendly conversation in all sorts of ways, nor could we at that time choose a much better friend for that purpose next to the Lord Shahbandar Miersa Mhamed. From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. has been ventured, may Your High Noblenesses please not take it amiss that on that account we are still obliged to mention how about this, on the 24th of November, proper letters were written to the said Rasjet and also Sheikh Rama, together with their answer on the 13th of December; but no real satisfaction could be obtained, except only that afterwards, or on the 23rd of June last, one of those pirate vessels was brought in, and 4 of the principal guests had their heads laid before their feet by the Sultan Mir Inheer Alie and other regents, just as that is recorded in the daybook of the same date. Although in our aforesaid letter of the 19th of March, in all submissiveness, we touched upon the improper English efforts to obtain the favor of the grandees of the land, applied at the time of the arrival of the gentlemen Mirzas named Renae and Abul Hossen—the first being Mhamet Jackie Phan's son, and the latter his brother—on the 18th of January until the 30th of March, when they returned again, and how this worked to our detriment, it has indeed been experienced as the cause of almost all the disasters. Trade came to a complete standstill, and it went so far that a Banyan on the 23rd of March last tried to hang himself; which, with all circumstances and the tragic condition, can be seen in its entirety in the day journal of the 26th of February, the 3rd, 8th, 9th, 14th, 23rd, and 25th of March. His replacement, Sjeeg Hadie, effectively also a friend of ours, having marched with some cloth to the usurper without anyone's knowledge on 11 November, encountered the commander on the way to pay his farewell visit to the governor, Mier Meer Alie, and dismounted from his horse to say adieu, with the secret addition of being allowed to receive for delivery a note for the treasurer of the ruler of the realm, Miersa Inhamed, which at that time might be considered a mark of special confidence. He wrote to us from Gormoet upon his return on 2 May for a few fine olives of each sort.
