Before the aforementioned resolution of 19 November was convened, the Banians Obtjent and Koemertjent, aged 30 and 31 years, brothers of Ottumtsjent and Issourdas, presented themselves, petitioning to be appointed to the vacant broker position. From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. kindly recommended, the more so because our reflection on the capacity to grasp something that is very clear and ordered to observe, was thereby dispelled, a helpfulness from us might be needed by those ministers. But to cut it short now, they ask positively whether they may accept the man of 25 lb at 54 mamudis, and add at once that then, according to the report, 30¼ per cent roughly would be lost, etc. At this we became more obligated than dismayed over those servants' ignorance, seeing they also did not understand the reduction and calculated in our simple way that if for 48 shalots 100 lb of old copperworks—reckoning the man of 25 lb at 54 mamudis—could be obtained, then the 48 pesos of shalots or 91.16.- loses only f 13.6.- 3/39. And the master receives for the goods or merchandise effectively 48 shalots for his remittance, and calculated at 44 5/16 per cent loss according to the report, the shalots also notoriously lose f 40.13.9 1/25. Thus the latter appears to be more harmful by f 27.7.8 1/125 or 16 1/10 per cent roughly according to this proposition; and since we hold ourselves obliged to make the former even clearer to the reassurance of those ministers, under penalty thereof, we pray Your High Noble, From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. with all reverence, graciously to permit a few lines of writing here, which belong solely for elucidation before Bassoura, in order to remove all embarrassment from the servants themselves: at Bassoura I buy at the highest, or up to 54 mamudis, a man of 25 lb; this amounts, for the 100 lb, to f 91.16.-.-, and according to the Batavia report, after the assay, 100 lb costs only f 78.10.15 27/39, thus the indicated f 13.6.- 3/39 being full proof of the loss instead of f 40.13.9 2/25. And not yet counting the profit that those ingots might yield for Your High Nobilities at Coromandel, etc., conversely, according to the respected report, about 30 per cent will now be lost approximately with the shalots, which according to the ministers' opinion and clear assertion will in their manner be preserved in the master's purse, wherever that silver money might also be sent for assay. And if they can obtain the aforesaid 54 mamudis for 27 lb, the disadvantage is proportionally even greater. Rigorous, Highly Honorable Nobilities, in order that, in case of an error committed in our comparison, you will graciously hold us harmless, and otherwise have the servants instructed whether we are right or wrong in our proposition, because this, in copy, with Your High Nobilities' consent, will be sent to those ministers in its entirety on a peaceful occasion. From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. tolerable at the new Bouroldij, to be permitted to trade in tranquility. Concerning which delicate matter we furthermore very humbly make known to Your High Noble, Stern, Great Worships that from here, if feasible, we are also to write to the well-mentioned His Excellency; but judging that most towards the continuation thereof could be accomplished from our beloved Fatherland, we shall for the rest completely humbly submit ourselves to the penetrating judgment of Your High Noble Worships, and only pray to be permitted to refer to the said letters of the servants, since from them, over and above the description of the said case, it may still be noted how the ministers, upon the refusal made to the Pasha to lend money, above all received outlays and costs, were threatened that after the departure of the ship he would indeed know how to find them, wherefore we may find no reason here not to have faith in the conduct of the servants, or, regarding that unreasonable creature, they will in their complaint to the repeatedly mentioned Lord Ambassador also allow that specimen to be influenced, since at Bussorah they have an open enough way to effectuate such, and since it is to be supposed, before the arrival of the redress from Constantinople at Bussorah, that the brusque person, according to reports from the last-mentioned place, will already have been replaced by another Pasha than his plenipotentiary, as is everyone's expectation and wish there; thus, however, upon obtaining a prerogative, whether by order of the Turkish Emperor or even merely by the Grand Vizier, a stumbling block will be cleared out of the way here forever, and the Company's ministers may at all times be liberated from being subject to similar frivolous vexations or other unbearable oppressions, since from that place it was reported by the said letters of the 15th of September that the supply and sale of French and English cloths still flourished equally strongly and was carried on advantageously, while the Dutch trade could well be missed. Item, the Muscat coffee coffee (whereof we have obediently reported previously) which the first-mentioned enterprise brought to Bussorah with their small ship named La Subtile, and sold in its entirety. They were 1400 small bales at number 40 to 417 per maund of 25 lb, whereby 1 lb comes to f. 13. 9 5/8; and that only having obtained that price due to a lack of Mocha beans, the ministers now doubt that upon further arrivals of such coffee, that unheard-of price could any longer be obtained. Seeing that the merchant and first resident, the Honorable George Gutchi, in a special accompanying original packet under flying seal, has also included his written request to be removed from this region to Batavia by Your High Noble, Stern, Great Worships, we, hoping for esteemed approval, at the same time take the liberty to make known most obediently on behalf of the junior merchant and second, Abraham van Suchtelen, his most humble desire to see himself graciously confirmed by Your High Noble Worships in his new post of Gamron storekeeper here, with humble supplication that we, for the rest, may be permitted to refer to the mentioned writings, or in default thereof, to the dispatched and received Bussorah writings cited in the register. Regarding the ships, and whatever else has occurred in this just-elapsed fiscal year that serves for the most obedient notification herewith, we hold ourselves obliged to report that as soon as the skipper of the Stadwijk, Jan Mauritius, had set foot ashore on the 24th of November last-mentioned, he made a request to be discharged as soon as possible from the woodwork because of leakage sustained during the voyage; so that orders having also been given at that time, we took into consideration at the end of that month, regarding the debarkation in its entirety, what was best to do; and since also under that decree, Your High Noble, Stern, Great Worships' honored order issued on the 9th of October 1734 concerning the returning of the ships and merchandise came into great observation and reflection, and wherefore on the 5th of November, or shortly before the arrival of that vessel, our apprehensions had already been dispatched to Surat, one did not feel at ease, because of the inconstant times here, to decide the same positively at that time, but rather first to lay hands on the above-mentioned woodwork, provisions, and what had been sent to us through the exceedingly great favor of Your High Noble Worships over and above the voluminous merchandise, unless the leak required making more room, or applicants for the goods remaining therein might turn up, since everything had been made public; while in the meantime of that work it could also be learned how things in Spahan, Kirman, etc., would actually incline and turn out. From Persia, 10 December Anno 1737. With regard to the specified discharged goods in kind, we shall most humbly mention that from the 8460 lb of pepper, 153 lb is deducted for dust and sweepings. Item, for net underweight, being 3 1/8 percent, or 4006 lb. Thus the validated amount is 4159 lb. Then, taking into consideration that excessive waste and carrying in had caused this, but what upon further riddling had appeared as dust and undeliverable material to a quantity of 4301 lb, throwing out again 8460 lb, caused some scruple among the officers to allow the same to pass. And therefore it was judged to be more accountable to place the last mentioned to their account, the maund of 6 lb at 7¼ mahmudis or ƒ 3. 1. 10 (or according to the present sales price), and, together with the first-mentioned dust making 4454 lb, to have this further dispatched for the gracious decision of Your Right Excellencies.
