From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. with the intention of going to complain in person to the court to the Wali of Ahwaz about the outrages, etc. This was indeed settled again, as can be seen in the daily register under and around the aforementioned date, but it caused by no means a true rest for the same since that time, because upon the arrival of one or another chappar they were continually forced in the most horrible manner to produce good money. Furthermore, that calculation made also came in handy around the middle of June, when we could not refuse to advance a capital of 600 thomams or f 25,500.-, and of which we shall make citation in all submission and with much timidity under the respective section, since if that sum had been spent in those times, sufficient toll revenues had been promised, which we would have tried to have assigned through binding bonds; and these presenting themselves as meager, the said inevitable accommodation was assigned to the entire district of Minab, not doubting that it will be reimbursed from that place, so that we shall not need to address his highness the beglerbegi, or dutifully contemplate other reassuring means. From Persia, under date 10th of December, Anno 1736. to have to contemplate. Among the fixed prices on 22 December aforesaid, the Bengal handkerchiefs, the Bengal gumlac, and that which comes from Siam were also included, to the end of being able to supply the merchant immediately upon request, or else, in case any inclination toward the demand thereof was seen to be required, to conduct ourselves according to the circumstances of the time. However, the merchant of the last two sorts in Cochin, having been supplied with all kinds of wares much cheaper and abundantly by the English, who barely knew how to dispose of them, made no bid with us. This caused us to send all the Siam gumlac we had on hand, amounting to 1,221 lb., to Basra on their demand of 28 October of the past year for up to 10,000 lb. We also had to presuppose at that time that Bengal gumlac was in very little demand there, since the rulers had petitioned for none of that sort, undoubtedly because in a period of 2 to 7 months no more could be made for it there than 8 2/5 mans the 6 lb., and the Siamese still 95 mans for the same weight, conforming to the accompanying copy of their price current, annexed to their demand. Furthermore, upon the arrival of their report, we shall not fail to mention here in all obedience what progress shall have been obtained there. In the interim, or in the very same month of June, an English ship opportunity presented itself, and the chief of that nation, Mr. Waters, offered his services. On the 11th of the same month, after due consideration, this was accepted; therefore, on the 25th of the said month, conforming to the resolution of 26 March previously, alongside what was possible for us upon the received demand dated Hugli the 1st of March of the past year, we sent as samples: 179 lb. From Persia, the 10th of December, Anno 1736. sent as samples, as herewith, which they convey to Bengal and other places: 119 lb. lapis tutia, 64 lb. auripigmentum, and 127 lb. mastic, since before the truth thereof was investigated here, we could observe with sufficient astonishment the greed of the English for the parcels which the aforementioned neighbors so eagerly try to secure from the merchant, and steadily convey toward Bengal and other regions, unless it were enough for them to be permitted to trade their wares from those places against such goods in loco, whereby their first selling price was merely indemnified. We have well-founded reasons to put much faith in this, and shall also mention it hereafter when we have the honor to report on the required asafoetida from the coasts of Coromandel and Malabar. If it turns out well there with only one of these three merchant commodities, and the honorable Director Jan Albert Sichterman is pleased to be provided with substantial parcels, the honorable Company would at least gain a notable money loss in these times upon return. Furthermore, by the said letters, and again subsequently on the 4th of August, we have written to his aforesaid Honor and the Council concerning the cited handkerchiefs and the occurrences here, in such manner as we hope in due time may be passed as well-done by your High Excellencies, and also graciously approved, in that the provisional commander, in addition to the enclosed said dye-materials, has added 1 lb. of sulfur to the honorable Director, written at the same time in his private letter with the prior knowledge of the Council, sealed with hing for the busybodies in case they might open the small box, because besides that the general letter was already closed, to the end that through that investigation it might likewise be verified in due time whether the purchase here of 6 lb. per man, 1 1/2 white or f 0.12.12, would not similarly obtain a small profit for that Directorate, as has been said, for that ware.

The King's Toenakel beecq, being suspected by enviers in the management of his entrusted post, had granted an attestation in his favor along with letters of conduct to the usurper, containing at the same time congratulations upon his accession to the throne; but since this conduct appeared to us of more than ordinary consequence, those servants, and also the Spahan residents, were confronted by a letter dispatched on the 16th of the last-mentioned month with the difficulties caused thereby, and those of Kirman were shown what fate was inflicted upon Mustoffa Chan and 10 prominent gentlemen for granting a false attestation; all concerning this was slightly touched upon in the aforementioned letter and the following day in our assembly. They were also ordered to Spahan to try by all possible means to regain possession of the said attestation, and both those residencies were exhorted to conduct themselves and their necessary requests to the regents in a humble manner at this time, but not to petition His Majesty without our prior knowledge, since we ourselves had been referred to Nihamedtackie Chan, and since in our reply of 3 June of the current year From Persia, 10 December Anno 1736. of the current year to the same, the occasion seemed to permit soliciting His Excellency's friendship and assistance in a civil manner to prevent the assumed disgrace or displeasure with the King, if the cited testimonial or other matters of concern might have occurred or been submitted before receipt of our said answer, we now have good hope that the bad consequence will have been prevented; at least it has not yet come to our notice, even in His Excellency's reply thereto received on the 26th of the said month of June, nor from Spahan or Kirman either, to our particular relief. Furthermore, the discharge regarding this from the First Sworn Clerk Simon Clement was inserted into the resolution of 25 June after resumption, and it is hoped along with him that no detrimental consequences may arise, and also that his simple actions may not incur any disfavor from Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses. Regarding the wool harvest obtained, we must further communicate to Your Right Honorable Lordships in all submission that by the frequently mentioned resolution of 10 November of the past year From Persia, 10 December Anno 1736. of the past year, upon received advice of 15 October, we calculated that there was a deficit of 48940 lb. on the demand from Kirman, so that at that time the servants' request for authorization to obtain 12 to 18 thousand lb. beyond that could not yet be licensed, because of such perils as were touched upon in our given answer of the 22nd of the same month, principally including the changes in the realm and the extortion or other persecution usually felt in such a time. Furthermore, in that resolution, we refused their expenditures made to the principal regents amounting to man:s 2313 or ƒ 983.8.-, being ƒ 327.7.6 more than had been sent up to them for that purpose through the said Clement. Likewise, this expenditure of his, namely: from 8 April to 5 May for road expenses, m:s 178.-, ƒ 75.13.- from 1 May to the last of August for ordinary expenses, m:s 1004.-, ƒ 426.14.- purchase of saddle, m:s 150.-, ƒ 63.15.- a recognition for lodging, m:s 50.-, ƒ 21.5.- together m:s 1382.-, ƒ 587.7.- upon close inspection and after deliberation, was uniformly adjusted. From Persia, 10 December 1736. deemed advisable to gain possession of it, and at least to send as far as practicable whatever could be obtained to give satisfaction, it being very humbly hoped that Your High Excellencies will please attribute our modest fulfillment to the state of the present times. Having spoken several times already concerning the procurement of some assa fetida, we take the liberty, with Your High Excellencies' kind permission, now briefly to report further that after much wrangling, through a positive refusal on our part and apparently also a lack of ready money among our strong competitors, a quantity of 3000 lb was nevertheless obtained on the 25th of this month. This is 842 lb more than what is lacking from the humble requisition from Coromandel, the man of 6 lb at 26 2/5 mamudis, amounting to f 11. 4. 6 1/2, making less than what we were permitted to purchase it for by f —. — 13 2/5 on each said man. However, since we together also warned the brokers that that type was not known to us, From Persia, 10 December 1736. and that we could find no comparison with the sample received, they sincerely declared to us that it was of the best and superior sort, and that they wished to vouch for it as being equal to the received sample, with the humble request to be allowed to send the samples of their purchase. In case it should nevertheless not be found in accordance with the true intention, they would then have the good fortune to receive those goods back, as they saw no difficulty whatever in this, and that the slightest loss thereon would be for them. But regarding the requisition from Cochin for 2500 lb, we find ourselves, to our particular regret, frustrated, since after deduction of 50 percent advance and all charges, a price has been stipulated which requires that it must not cost more than 5 schellingen each. However, should it please God that the times may again become prosperous as before, and that the man of 6 lb can be purchased here at 13 to 14 mamudis, we shall very gladly apply our due diligence toward obtaining it. And whereas the said servants, in the aforementioned letter of the 13th of October, emphatically reiterated the request they had made earlier on the 29th of June to the effect that they might also be permitted, through some further distributions to the grandees, to make insinuations on behalf of the Company's interest and their own persons; one could not well refrain from doing so in the aforementioned session of the 10th of November, in view of the very mutable state of the realm toward which it already seemed to lean at that time; and also because we intended to address the king himself concerning the remainder of the toll assignments after the end of the Delhi embassy, or at another favorable occasion.
