From Persia under date 10 December 1736. Furthermore, the provisional fiscal submitted the following report concerning the clearing of the poor box. Report presented with all respect to the honorable Mr. Carel Koenad, Merchant and Commander of this Persian Directorate. Commanding Sir, Honorable Sir, In compliance with Your Honor's esteemed order, we, the undersigned as judicial commissioned council members, in the presence of the under-merchant and provisional fiscal Christoffel de Haan, proceeded to the Great Hall of this lodge, and there cleared from the poor box 24 pieces, that is to say twenty-four pieces of silver rupees, which we then placed into a linen bag, alongside another 9 silver Spanish reals or pieces of eight exchanged here at 10 m: each, the latter mentioned amount resulting from that which the commanding sergeant Sebastiaan Godfried Nauman was condemned by the honorable Court of Justice of this office on 5 October last to pay to the said diaconate poor out of 2 months of his present-earning wage at f 20 per month. After which procedure we tied up the said bag and sealed it upon the knot with the Honorable Company's seal, and at the ends by each of us alongside the fiscal with his customary seal, having first placed into the said bag a note of the true contents of the accompanying currency, which was also duly signed by us alongside the said provisional fiscal, and the aforementioned bag was inscribed as follows: Money species for the Diaconate Poor at Batavia. Wherewith, Commanding Sir, hoping that we have carried out our assigned commission to Your Honor's satisfaction, we therefore assume the honor of being and remaining, below stood, Your Honor's obedient, humble, and bounden servants. Since, through the departure of sergeant Jan Spitkler for Batavia, another capable man from among the lower ranks needed to be chosen again for replacement, the more so because only four of those commanding persons remained, wherewith one could not manage well, since frequently one or the other was impeded by sickness or local ailments so that they could not attend to their duties, and for which Corporal Willem Lindeman, having made a request for it, came into consideration as being a man of good conduct and experience, who subsequently, with unanimous votes, was also appointed to that service with an earning wage of f 20 per month to serve out a new 3-year term for it; and in whose place soldier Francois de La Rouelle van Ronsel was promoted to corporal, and in addition granted the corporal's emoluments to serve out his running term for it. After the handling of which, His Honor the Commander presented for reading the secret letter addressed to their High Nobles, the Right Honorable Gentry, and the same having been read out loud by the provisional secretary, was approved by each of the members accordingly. Whereupon an end was made to this session, in humble hope that what was framed therein will in time be crowned with a favorable approval by their High Nobles, the High Indian Government. Thus resolved and decreed with unanimity of votes in the Dutch office of Gamron, on the day, month, and year as in the heading of this. The assembled members, having convened upon convocation by the honorable Commander, His Honor made known how, through the leakage of the ship Stadwijk discovered on the 26th of the recently passed month of November, and wherewith the work of repairing and restoring it was only finished yesterday, as appears from the following report submitted thereof. Report to the honorable Mr. Carel Koenad. Report of the ship Stadwijk. Monday the 26 November, I was warned that a leak was found at the sternpost, whereupon I immediately went on board with the boat and found that on the floor of the aft cabin on the port side there was fully an inch of water, whereby the wheat that was placed in the forward cabin on the same side ran the risk of getting wet. The ship lay 20 feet deep aft. I had the cargo brought from aft to forward to lighten her aft, and had the strakes cleared and also the lead that lay over the seam, but found no leak. I made a report by a note to the honorable Commander, which I also received; after having applied much effort without having advanced anything before the 29th, I went ashore and requested of the Commander to unload the wheat in order to lighten the ship more aft, for I placed everything heavy in the cargo hold and all that could add weight into the forepart of the ship. 1529 From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. Order of the honorable authority to unload the wheat, which on the 30th at daybreak was put into execution. We broke a patch of the sheathing of the transom and found a seam on the transom that was very open and the caulking inside it rotten. Thought to have found the leak, repaired it properly and placed lead patches over all the seams, both against the stem and on the transom. Took the cargo back in again and brought all the weight from fore to aft, so that the ship was again drawing so many feet of water. Found then that it had decreased little, so that that open wide seam, which was very dangerous, has contributed little or no water. When it was found that all our trouble and labor would not help, I went inside for the second time to stop the leak with mastic, which has helped much. Hopes with God's help to undertake the voyage with an easy mind. Below stood: From Persia under date 10 December 1736. Noble Sir and Honorable Sir, On the 31st of July it pleased your Honors in your illustrious gathering or meeting to require to what extent we had already advanced with extracting and collecting all positive orders sent hither at various times by their High Nobles, the Lords of the High Indian Government; whereupon we shall reply with the required respect, that since the departure of the ships Valkenisse and Noordwijkerhout until today I have continually suffered from fevers and chest ailments, meanwhile also functioning until the [illegible] as provisional secretary, subsequently appointed by your Honors upon my arrival from Basra by the ship Stadwijk in place of the deceased junior merchant and provisional fiscal the honorable Jan Bout, at the humble request of the undersigned. After the conclusion of which his Honor brought this session to a close, in the humble hope that what has been resolved may in time be crowned with a favorable approval of their High Nobles, the High Indian Government. However, what is actually to come of this, we prefer to leave to time, and in the interim not meddle in any way with those affairs, as too many evil consequences are to be presumed therefrom. Our neutrality has also, as it seems to us, been very well received by the locals, from the least to the greatest, and therefore we hope that God will be pleased to bless us with rest and peace. To his Excellency Thomas Chan, the gifts of this year regarding the shipping were chartered, as at that time the monsoon for Diuel, situated near Souratta, was approaching, and it was too great a danger to risk ship and souls; to which, on the 6th of this month, a very courteous reply was given, assuring us of his favor and indicating that whatever Mirza Taqi, his grand secretary and plenipotentiary over all the lowlands, should undertake to execute, he would approve. The said Mirza at the same time also sent us a humble letter via His Highness's courier, mainly requesting that a ship be kept ready for Diuel. However, during his visit, the courier told us, among other things, that he had express verbal orders from His Highness and Mirza Taqi to assure us of their singular favor and affection. In conclusion, before his departure, he added: it is contrary to expectation that there are no ships belonging to Your Honors. And so, nevertheless, with politeness he directly undertook his journey to the Minab, to the Sultan of this city, Amir Mir Ali, for whom he had also brought an order. We have answered those letters to the best of our ability and employed one of our couriers for that purpose to bring ours to Shiraz to the aforementioned Mirza Taqi. And what answer is now to be given to us on that matter, we must likewise leave deferred to time, except that it may well be presumed that some unpleasantness will be experienced, no matter how well-founded our reasons were and also demonstrated to those local gentlemen that one was forced to dispatch the last two ships that were here, as appears from the translated copies of His Highness's and our missives. Being ready to dispatch in two to three days, along with the rumors of others that their ship Lunion, also mentioned hereinbefore, would navigate thither within a month empty or fully laden, it was judged most reliable regarding the aforementioned first matter that we would act more responsibly by sending this letter along with the most principal enclosures, given the shortness of the time, and not wait for an uncertain shipping opportunity, so that the most important events which could possibly be put to paper might be presented with that vessel in all submission for Your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Sirs' petition, peace of mind, and necessary information; living in the humble hope that we will not do amiss, we therefore refer beforehand with all reverence to an extract from our latest resolution of the 21st of this month, wherein the important matters between the native inhabitants, the English, and us here are discussed, as well as an Ispahan report received, which was answered on August 29th of this month, the latter in its entirety, and the other in extract, also accompanying this along with the first mentioned; the state of the administration of the lords remains in the same condition as described therein, and concerning our affairs, praise be to God, we cannot make all too many difficulties, were it not that with the arrival of the expected two orders of his highness, cited in the Ispahan reports mentioned hereinbefore concerning feasible things, they might also demand such extraordinary burdens of us as may indeed be supposed from windy Persian notions; be that as it may, one cannot easily judge before their receipt, but rather do one's best to be on guard, as we, with all due respect, most humbly assure Your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Sirs that we will not spare our utmost efforts so long as your tender interests in these lands can possibly be maintained, but will rather, if possible, endeavor to persuade the new commissioner to a delay in one tractable manner or another, as rumors have it that a state assembly of his highness will shortly be held, for which his recently achieved victory at Ganja (of which fortress he is presently also master) over the Turk with 12 against 3000 men will ostensibly be declared the occasion; awaiting this in time, there is good hope of seeing peace made between the said parties, of which the ministers at Bassora will undoubtedly be able to give Your Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Sirs better intelligence than we; wherefore we humbly request that this, as well as their report for the ended book year, outside of what has been effected by us in the aforementioned submissive detail to the High Indian Government, may be left deferred thereto; and for their guidance, copies of these with the necessary extracts from the submissive documents cited above are now forwarded to the presidents, having no doubt that they will most dutifully acquit themselves of their obligations in the matter, just as they have also promised to remit their cash balances to us as soon as possible via the broker Moeljent and some other trusted persons shortly, according to the private report given by the first resident, the Honorable G: Gutchi, dated 22 August of the past year, to the first signatory of this letter, which was brought here on the 18th of this month; furthermore, that note indicated that good prospects presented themselves for trade by the eagerly expected Baghdad and other merchants, which we sincerely wish and even consider certain, if only God pleases to grant peace. Resting in our confidence, we take the uncommon liberty of presenting herein an account which, from the factors' letters (which, in 3 copies dated 18, 26, and 29 August last, are attached hereto, along with a ditto written from here under date 14 of this month), we have provisionally been able to draw up: 30387 3/4 lb or 5064 9/16 mans, each at no. 13. 12 sch copper money, thus comes to copper mans 68878 1/20; on 5064 13/16 man salary at 3 mans per man: 15193 1/16; 30387 1/8 lb costs copper: mans 84071 3/80; minus white goods mans 67257 139/100, according to this the 6 lb comes to stand at mo. 13 1/4 f5. 12. 14 2/5, and 1 lb mans 2 1/4 rm or f0. 18. 13 7/5. We are daily expecting a courier here with the report of the wool collectors and an accurate account, as well as some bills of exchange for the further continuation of this trade, and the paying off of what might already have been requested by the Armenian factor Auwannees. Furthermore, it would also be a desirable thing if the entire harvest were completed before the departure hither of the resident bookkeeper and first clerk Simon Clement, according to the suppositions of the English factor Mr. Wedwel. Although the summoning of Miersa Lackie and all the regents residing in the lower and upper lands by His Highness (which we learned of after the dispatch of our last cited letter of the 14th of this month) was very pleasing to us to hear, considering that the presumed fear of monetary extortions may thus possibly remain cast aside; praying very humbly that Your Noble Honorable Right Worships will be pleased to permit us for the rest to refer most obediently to the copies of the said incoming and outgoing letters, since time effectively does not permit us to extend this humble report as would otherwise be dutifully required. And as further proof thereof, we may not conceal from Your Noble Honorable Right Worships, with all respect, that on that account we are still frustrated in drafting the last resolution concerning the matters noted in the minutes, especially how the commissioners were yet comfortably dispatched, because the draft drawn on the 21st of this month, due to the few clerks sent, has not even been entirely entered in the books. For which reason we now flatter ourselves that Your Noble Honorable Right Worships will graciously be pleased to accommodate that we, calculating in this conjectural manner, estimate the expedition may well cost mans 20000 or f8500, as bills of exchange drawn by the Company's brokers Ottumsjent and Jssoux Das have already been advanced, and mans 15025 or f6385. 12. 8 advanced to the 3 nakhodas (the heads) of 3 large vessels. In order to obtain an accurate caretaking of His Highness's goods, and also a proper account of the bill of exchange as well as other cash, we have sent along 2 trusted Banyans, not doubting that they will conduct themselves properly and upon return enable us to render a true account. Of these 3 vessels, there is one that has assured us, as well as the commissioners, that it will take on board 2 elephants (4 pieces are included in the estate), so that in our humble opinion, if one had to choose the lesser of two evils, it can still be considered quite profitable to have employed those vessels instead of a Company ship, since such heavy animals would undoubtedly cause great damage through the breaking open and subsequent repairing of the hold. Regarding this matter finally, we must still mention that the English expressly detained one of their ships for that purpose and positively refused to bring the other 2 elephants hither, which, notwithstanding their loading of 150 tomans or f6375 onto a small vessel chartered from the French for their retreat, and which therefore will make their own bottom in the voyage to Diwel, made the commissioners particularly furious; wherefore we pray Your Noble Honorable Right Worships graciously to approve these our actions which were so highly necessary. From all of which aforementioned humble writings Your Right Honors will discern in detail our transactions in the trade, and what accidents we furthermore have successively suspected regarding the whims of this government and otherwise. We testify From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736— we testify our heartfelt regret that the same could not turn out better or higher, but that does not diminish that we, in two different comparisons between both our returns of the sold merchandise of the two consecutive book years 1733/4, 1734/5, clearly and also humbly demonstrated to Their Honors that our calculated percentages in general, or the obtained profits on the goods separately, in so far as we sold the same wares there and here, still considerably came to exceed those of Their Honors. Noordwijkerhout to Their Right Excellencies the High Indian Government at Batavia, as well as the original letter, now dedicated by Their Excellencies to Your Right Excellencies, Your Right Excellencies will be pleased to be able to discern how, among other points, Their Excellencies copiously lament our delay in transmitting our trade books and detailing what further concerned our residency in its circumstances at that time. We candidly confess, Right Honourable, Valiant, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen and Awful Masters, that such neglect, if it had truly occurred premeditatedly as Their Excellencies are pleased to maintain, would indeed have merited a heavy correction. 1581. From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. that man with his; and to forbid our further house servants from going out, in order not to expose themselves to that same affront. Now, the aforementioned English consul took this insult so much to heart that on the 4th of this month he had the flagstaff of his residence lowered, left this place, and set out on a journey to Baghdad in order to complain about the mischief perpetrated by the new government and to demand satisfaction. Meanwhile, the whole city was in commotion for several days to appease the Englishman with the said lieutenant-governor and thus prevent his departure, whereupon the release of the arrested persons immediately followed. However, he would by no means listen to this, but executed his intentions, which gives us good hope that we and all Europeans in general will be left in peace, just as this mentioned lieutenant-governor already shows no small regret regarding the insolences he committed and an inclination toward redress. At least, hands are kept off us for the present, we remaining further unprompted with respect to the money loan, and our servants left unmolested. From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. Your Honours, upon receipt, will have to employ it for the purchase of the goods most recently demanded, and consequently proceed therewith in the most cautious manner to the payment of our own honour instead of disgrace; and since Your Honours over there can best experience how far the changes in the realm are to be trusted when the dispatch thereof must be undertaken, namely whether one can risk goods or whether it is advisable to refrain, Your Honours are therefore recommended to be vigilant with all circumspection in this matter, so that the Honourable Company does not incur even the slightest loss and Your Honours at the same time do not face a heavy accounting. Concerning Your Honours' good expectation in answer to the native writings sent on 11 January last to Thomas Chan and Miersa Mhamed, through the latter's favorable mediation, we hope in due time to see followed by truth; and it is consequently extremely necessary that the so dearly acquired Persian friends, who in the present delicate juncture of time seem to have been won over to the Company's side, like 1609.
