The secret resolution in our council, with your mutual consent, taken on the 30th of the past expired month of March, or in the morning on the day you undertook the journey thither in the afternoon, having since been brought into draft, is therefore transmitted to you by express opportunity as such, together with the relevant instructions, drafted and committed to paper by the first-signed, both for the guidance of the elected Kirman resident Monsieur Clement and the Armenian wool-factor Auwannees, to the end of not only sharing advance knowledge thereof with you, but also enabling you, in view of the said 3 writings, upon attentive perusal of the same, properly to consider and examine the respective points in their essential properties and assumed consequences, in order to ascertain whether any omissions were committed therein, or whether the Company's 1621. Your agreeable letter of the 4th of this month in reply to ours of the day before, together with the known papers returned therewith, having duly reached us on the same day, thus. 6 From Persia under date 10. December 1736. thus nothing more remains to be noted in that regard, and we would therefore gladly wish to let the matter rest here, had not a vexatious incident, in appearance not only detestable, but also of a weighty consequence and serious aftermath, quite unexpectedly (to our regret) alarmed our so long undisturbed and quiet household the day before yesterday, consisting in a certain theft, perpetrated in a premeditated, villainous manner by the crew of and upon the vessel Noordwijkerhout; of which abominable crimen furti, upon an inquest already held by the fiscal, the greater part of the petty officers of that vessel have been found guilty and have therefore already been placed in custody, after the presidency of the judicial council pro tempore was deferred and transferred to the provisional warehouse master M:r Heijnitsz by the first-named, in order not to violate the tender form of justice, but to undertake the matter, according to the opportunity of the time, as responsibly as possible; while the prosecution in law of the said delinquents, owing. 1623. December 1736. named Prins Walles, Roste galleij, and Thien freegatt, having appeared in this roadstead, advance notice was thereupon unexpectedly brought to us in the evening from our said neighbors, with an offer of service, that the last-mentioned vessel was to weigh its anchors again early today, intending to set sail thither; which sudden opportunity we did not wish to miss, and which shall serve for the forwarding of our duplicate missive under date of the 21st of February last, accompanied by this, the content of which, contrary to our wish and design, must thus remain brief in its extent, both because of the still-continuing expectation and the daily look-out for your most necessary advices, and the leaking out, just recently, of a certain much-commotion-causing incident, concerning theft and frauds perpetrated by a not small number, nor by any means of the least (as it appears) of the crew of the vessel Noordwijkerhout; over and above an arduous renovation of our assembly hall, together with the frontispiece of this lodge annexed thereto, undertaken from the foundation, because of its exceptionally perilous state of decay; so that we, through this and other things with the work of the economy

However, Your Honors now receive the requested writing materials, so that the Company's service, in the absence thereof, may encounter no hindrance in its course, and Your Honors will have to credit this office for the amounts thereof with a small sum of f 9:14:— as appears from the enclosed small invoice. Honorable, Wise, Discreet, Our latest letter dated yesterday, to which reference is made, having departed to Your Honors per the small English ship named Tienfregat, and said small vessel, though under sail, being still in sight today, this present letter likewise now follows, drawn up on an extra occasion, because during the past night, the chief mate assigned to the ship Noordwijkerhout, by name Jan Schrader, has managed to go missing by flight in a clandestine manner, and thus render himself suspect to the judge, or even guilty of or complicit in committing the crime of the still questionable and so strictly prohibited trade, mentioned in passing in our said previous letter. Being a person, according to the fiscal's statement, of middle stature, aged 34 to 35 years, of reasonably full and ruddy complexion with his own hair, slightly curling, and since 1627 From Persia under date 10 December 1736. the same, up to the closing of this letter, remains absent despite all possible means already employed for his necessary pursuit and apprehension, our presumptive concern that the mentioned accused may have hidden himself aboard the aforesaid vessel that has dropped down, out of our reach, and thus far escaped, could easily be well-founded and possibly of consequence. Therefore, Your Honors are hereby expressly ordered to spare no time nor any attempt, tracking down that restless fellow by a proper way, to get him into your power, and furthermore to send him over hither in secure custody, to the end that he may receive his punishment according to his merits, for the maintenance of Justice and the restraint of other ill-disposed persons. Pious, Discreet, Since Your Honor on date the 7th of this month obtained your dispatch from here in company of the wool factor Auwannees, with the recommendation to complete your undertaken journey on the way with all possible speed, we will not doubt but that Your Honor shall, long before the receipt of this, not only have arrived safely at destination, but already be established there to satisfaction, in order to be able to put into operation Your Honor's entrusted commission in conformity with the measures clearly and circumstantially prescribed in the instructions given along to Your Honor as well as to the mentioned Armenian, and thus make a beginning with the wool collection for this year, to the greatest benefit of the Honorable Company, to the satisfaction of our good expectation. Decemb: 1736. at your location pass daily in the wool trade as well as state affairs, how the regents wish to see themselves treated or how that nation ought to be dealt with, keep a compendious journal or day-to-day account to the end of keeping a constant record of past times, to be accessible both to us and to Your Honor's master, and of which it is often of no small importance to be able to make use; meanwhile we hope that Your Honor with the said Auwannees, according to their letters, will have already arrived there on the 4th or 5th of this month and that the matters which we have entrusted to Your Honor have been taken in hand in a prudent manner. — As for the difficulty assumed by Your Honor concerning Auwannees's worsened injury to his leg, it did not come as a surprise to us; yet we hope that he, through being caused to sit by that affliction now, will find himself in a more accurate contemplation of his entrusted affairs than was previously presumed in his healthy days, all the more so when he acts confidentially with Your Honor as we trust, but if 1683 From Persia under date 10. And at the outset thereof, we deem ourselves obliged to report that Your Honors' pleasant letters sent successively under dates of 28 August, 28 September, 22 October Anno 1733, and 5 April of the just expired year have been handed to us with pleasure and gratitude: namely, the first, second, and third on 15 January, and the duplicate of each on the 30th of the same month of the past year via Basaidu, complete with all the enclosures according to the appended registers noted in the first and second; and among them likewise the copies of the reports sent for our perusal to Their High Noble, Severe, and Grand Worships, the High Indian Government, dated 15 and 30 April, as well as 4 August (this one in duplicate) Anno 1733, and 20 March following, written by Your Honors, together with their original and duplicate requisition of 28 August of the previous year on 22 May following, received with Your Honors' agreeable covering letters of 28 September aforesaid per the ship Carolina and Captain Abraham Rabbarts. Very obligingly expressing our thanks to Your Honors for their kind transmission and given communications, both regarding the trouble taken over what occurred with the Prince of Bhatkal and the Governor of Bombay, etc., and for the capture and recovery of the villainous, escaped scoundrels from the small yacht De Windhond, as well as concerning the still threatening situation in Your Honors' directorship, which was mostly caused by the death of the prominent Moorish merchant Mian Muhammad Ali, who died during his detention, as well as the discord among certain grandees, set at odds with one another over the government of the lower lands over there. It has nevertheless been pleasing to us to learn that Your Honors remained unmolested during those dangerous times, and moreover that all the Company's funds advanced during the waged war were refunded. Concerning the returned crew members of the aforementioned ship De Windhond, only one sailor was legally found here to be an accessory to that wicked deed and was therefore strangled. We were sorry to learn that, out of the quantity of 6 cases of rosewater bottles sent to the government, some were found broken by your Honours; however, since such damage without doubt will have arisen from nothing other than the rough handling of such weak cases and brittle bottles, which the sailors or coolies are accustomed to doing no matter how well they are watched, it seems nothing else remains in this matter than to be able to place that loss to the account of accommodation. Meanwhile, we heartily wish that it will fare well with the goods currently coming over and to be mentioned before the close of this letter, so that the Honourable Company may finally remain indemnified, and your Honours out of embarrassment. The remaining 12 cases of claret, and 2 ditto of ordinary Shiraz wine, 50 lb of crack almonds, and 2 catty of powder, shall also be forwarded to your Honours by another opportunity, if possible, since at present none of that From Persia, dated 10 December 1736. is to be obtained, because the said wine can only occasionally be procured mostly from the English gentlemen, their winemaker, a carbac with 2 flagons for 105 to 110 mahmudis or ƒ44:12:8 to ƒ46:15:—; thus this serves as a friendly notice for reasons that it is feared whether that price might not appear rather too expensive to your Honours, and consequently might cause in future that your Honours would sometimes please to alter your future orders in that regard. In the interim, we send herein to your Honours our demand for 72 pieces of bunting in kind, with the humble request to forward the same to us upon a favorable opportunity, the amount of ƒ201:19:8 for the ditto and sealing wax received to date having also been entered into our trade books according to custom to the credit of the General Office; and thus we request that ƒ474:17:— may likewise be dealt with according to the annexed small invoice, as your Honours will thereby also render us a kindness. July aforesaid: how one is to act here regarding the untraceable shortage of 107. lb: or 13 3/32. per Cent on the 5. soekels or 770. lb mace, likewise returned from there after obtaining license from here, and received per the mentioned vessel. It would likewise have been better that the chintz bedspreads and gingham pinas had not had to be returned from there as unsalable, for the amounts of which Your Honours have again been discharged, but we continue to hope that the Almighty, to the benefit of our Lords Masters, will be pleased to arrange such changes in time as shall be proper according to their interest and satisfaction: passing over the resumed findings drawn up both there upon the arrival of the Company's vessel aforesaid, and here upon the receipt back of the goods mentioned earlier, it will now appear to Your Honours that, by further extracts of the frequently mentioned resolution of the 5th of that month, Your Honours' offered, or rather forced recognition, upon the arrival of ship or ships to the joint chief From Persia under date 10. December 1736. make our opinion understood in this regard, yet it would be better to try to induce that man, unless through experienced lack of capacity due to his advanced age, to a longer continuation in his service, because here, regardless of other considerations, when agreeing with such a fellow, one might be at a loss in granting his request to employ him, for which reason Your Honours will have to be very circumspect in this handling, so as, upon a persevering request for discharge, not to dismiss him before and until another reputable person, of voluntary standing in credit and good name, shall be nominated to us by Your Honours, and subsequently by us, according to the said extract, rejected or accepted. 1705 From Persia, dated 10 December 1736 were brought there deteriorated, because upon inspection the rosewater was found to be carelessly packed with flaws, and moreover 26 of the said bottles empty, the plums mostly spoiled, and the madder found very damp, even so that this dye-root could not be remedied by drying in the sun, which caused it to yield a loss of 33 per cent upon sale; regarding its compensation, their High Excellencies, by their highly venerated letter of 2 October of the past year sent hither, ordered that the buyers of that time be held accountable for it on the spot and made to pay, because according to the copy of the report received here, dedicated by Your Worships to the High Indian Government, it had not been of the right sort. And whereas the Company's brokers purchase all goods and necessities locally, they were also called to account by us in all seriousness over this, and their lamentable protestations of the contrary were also heard, From Persia, dated 10 December 1736 heard; thus those poor people remain living only upon a gracious kindness of their High Excellencies, to the end that they may be released from this, since they steadfastly declare that it was indeed of the most virtuous sort. And what we, not knowing any better, promise, we, acting in accordance with equity, have humbly laid before the eyes of the most highly mentioned, their High Excellencies, in the general letter now departing, the prayers made by those people in the case in question. And in which regard we also trust with all required respect that in time, through their everywhere renowned equity and generosity, the desired endorsement in favour of those brokers will be obtained. The copy of that humble detail, dated today, still keeps company with the transcript of our obedient letters of 6 February of this year, presented via Aleppo to the High, Noble, Valiant, and Right Worshipful in the Fatherland, to the end that Your Worships, if it please you, might obtain the necessary knowledge of all that occurred in this Directorate, 1707 From Persia, dated 10 December 1736 knowledge, and to which we humbly refer. Regarding the rosewater and plums, we must likewise express our regret that those little goods had such poor conveyance, concerning which we nevertheless dare to assure Your Worships with ease of mind that in their purchase and packing here, proceedings were always conducted in the required and circumspect manner, applying all possible oversight thereto, so that we cannot conceive where those suspicious complaints concerning the shabby condition thereof are to be sought, unless one inclined to the affirmation which the spreading rumours try to make us believe, that upon the further transport of such goods from Tuticorin etcetera, the rough crewmen, in loading and unloading them again, act altogether inappropriately and rashly with them, and thus in truth do not bring much good to the weak assembly of the rosewater crates and brittle bottles, but that the damage observed therein, for the reasons just mentioned, may be shown to be imputed to such treatment; although we From Persia, dated 10 December 1737 ardently hope for the interests of the Honourable Company that the 12 crates of rosewater, and 7 lb. asafoetida, and 2 jars as samples now shipped per Castor and Pollux, sent for delivery via Tuticorin to the amount of ƒ642:7:8 according to the enclosed invoice, and for which amount we request that this Directorate may be discharged, may be so fortunate as to be good and sound. At least may it please Your Worships to be dutifully assured that to prevent damage and spoilage, all similar efforts were applied, with exhortation to use the most practicable precautions in that regard, in such manner as we also confirm to have taken place. Your Worships will be able to be further elucidated by our aforementioned copy of letters addressed to their High Excellencies at Batavia, regarding our capacity concerning the gathering of such goods as might be required for that capital and the western trade stations respectively, for the satisfaction of their demands, wherefore we are assured, out of consideration thereof, 1709 From Persia, dated 10 December 1736 that we shall be excused by Your Worships' discreet indulgence. Furthermore referring ourselves to the repeatedly mentioned copies of those humble advices, we were not in the least able, with regard to the asafoetida, to dare to undertake the satisfaction thereof, because that resin was not present in quality by comparison with the received samples, and such assortments had not been found locally for a long time. Wherefore, regarding the purchase of a parcel of 20,000 lb., we found ourselves forced on 31 March of the current year (the extract of that estimate being enclosed herewith) to suspend the same, and rather to send the samples first to Your Worships of the merchandise on hand locally, which is also very eagerly traded by the English and others, in the manner as is now done per the forward-mentioned vessel Castor and Pollux via Tuticorin.
