2047 From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. respective executors may fall under accountability to distribute the estates to the lawful creditors, or that in case of negligence in his kept accounts the Honorable Company will please to deliver the lawful verdict thereon and graciously uphold the right of the broker and me, to the end that this poor man, and also I in so far as the matters concern me, may be maintained in our interests through the same charitable and merciful decision. And so that two innocent persons should not have to suffer for one dangerous matter, my conscience demands of me this testimony concerning the junior merchant and second Abraham van Suchtelen, that not the very least blame or accountability regarding this entire affair can be attributed to him, since he could contribute neither to the detriment nor to the furtherance of the same, because the administration of the money matters and the accounts of the Company's affairs with the broker From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. at this office always principally depend on the first resident, who settles the same with him repeatedly and in due time, and enters them into the books, so that that person as well as I certainly never thought otherwise, but that the incoming moneys were constantly converted by him Courtier into current specie and held ready by him for remittance, all of which circumstances now cited are truly and essentially the dissection of a matter that has caused, and still causes me, continuous sleepless nights and restless days, and also often makes me dread the righteous resentment of Their High Noble Severities, the High Government of India, and consequently also that of Your Honors. I therefore hereby venture to beg Your Honors most humbly that in this subject case no more may be imputed to me than my all too great reliance on the broker's vigilance and fidelity, and that Your Honors will please to be 2049 From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. fully assured that in the future I shall exercise somewhat less confidence and somewhat more oversight in my transactions than occurred for this time; I further beseech, with respect to the old poor broker, that his mistake may be regarded as an obliging servitude and obedient compliance with his lord and master's commanded desire, by fulfilling which he has now fallen into such a pitiful and ruined state, and for whose remedy no other nor more effective expedient will be applicable than the gracious forgiveness of Their High Honors well-mentioned and Your Honors' favorable intercession for obtaining the same, so that he, the broker, may happily escape the dreaded censure on account of the loss of money, and I that of all too great trust. 2053 Jopp From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. commissioners for the affairs concerning the peace between the Turks and Arabs are to arrive by tomorrow or the day after tomorrow with the peace contracts in order to be ratified by mutual sealing, truly to the utmost joy of every inhabitant of this city, though not to the best satisfaction of the Pasha. Because, as one learns, the party outside has procured some conditions, the granting of which to him, the Pasha, must serve far more as a disgrace than honor, since he began his undertaking like a roaring lion, and now ends the same like a bleating sheep. But God be praised that the harmful consequences of both extremities have thereby come to cease, and now afford us hope of a desired success in matters concerning trade. From Persia, under date 10 December, Anno 1736. to send, of which the copy has not yet been prepared, which is hereby excused in the hope that the courier will deliver the original safely to Your Honours, referring to which, now that the English interpreter Joseph Hermet has dispatched a cossid via the route of Kirman towards your parts, we did not wish to fail to send Your Honours this present letter today, principally to notify you that the secunde of Shiraz and the agent of His Highness Mirza Taghi, according to what was set down by us in the postscript of that letter, undertook the journey to court late in the evening of that very day, and having received an order by courier on horseback from Thamas Chan at Mortjagor, situated 14 to 15 miles from here, returned here yesterday, whom we then, according to custom, offering a tray of sweetmeats, have again caused to be welcomed through From Persia, under date 10 December, Anno 1736. the interpreter Elias Sahid, who, expressing His Honour's gratification thereat, also brought report that he had learned from the chief mace-bearer of that gentleman that the Duke had sent him a very polite mandate, and thereby ordered him to return again to his government, and merely to send his scribes up to court, from whom he himself, acting as his or that Mirza's proxy, would then demand the accounts, which he has also sent forward thither along with the books and further notes, besides some rich presents; and the Duke had also written among other things that he is to come to Kashan towards the winter of this year, when he would also summon him, Mirza Taghi, there, and the same will undertake the journey from here to his post at Shiraz the day after tomorrow, and the bookkeeper Van Leijpzigh, if there shall be no obstacle regarding that gentleman, will pay him a casual visit tomorrow From Persia, under date 10 September, Anno 1736. visit, in order to request the continuance of his powerful favor toward the Honourable Company, which we hope will meet with Your Honours' approval. In the meantime, nothing has been heard since of the person of Agha Taher, who, as we informed Your Honours in our aforementioned missive, was said to have been appointed Shahbandar or toll-collector of the lowlands, so that we presume that the aforesaid will not have been true, just as concerning the dismissal of Mohamed Latif Khan, it was a mere Persian falsehood; for the aforementioned interpreter Elias Sahid, having been sent out on the 3rd of this month to wish the frequently mentioned Mirza Taghi a good journey to court, reported to us upon his return to the lodge that he had heard from that gentleman himself saying to another person: Captain Mohamed Latif Khan has gone to Basra to take that place From Persia, under date 10 December, Anno 1736. away from the Turks, which then gives us firm assurance of the continuation in that office of his, the more so as we learn he is dependent upon the command of the said Mirza Taghi; and Mirza Reza, who was daily expected here as vakil, according to further reports received, has reportedly sailed past this city toward Kirman, as the Duke is said to have changed his opinion regarding his person afterwards and appointed him again as wazir of that place. Whereupon, accompanied at once by Godje Auwannees, I went thither, where they then found all the merchants; but as soon as they learned of our arrival, they departed hopeless without having entered into any agreement. We were informed by the aforementioned Englishman that before we arrived there, he had been in conversation with them regarding the prices to sound them out, but that they were still speaking of the prices of last year; however, in talking back and forth, they had dropped down to 20 [illegible] copper, and remained obstinately standing upon that, without him having offered more than 11½ [illegible] of the said specie for it, as they would not come down and he would not go up. With the arrival of the ship Ritthem on 13 March last in this roadstead, we were rejoiced with Your Worships' much esteemed letters of 11 October and 19 December of the past year. The first accompanied by a requisition of goods for Your Worships' government, and the second serving to convey a ditto of 12000 Persian madder roots for Jaffanapatnam, together with a closed packet from the Honorable Lord Governor of Coromandel, Elias Guillot, which has also been well received by us, and for whose good care we express our very humble thanks. From Persia, dated 10 December Anno 1736. It was very pleasant for us to understand from the first-mentioned agreeable letters the safe arrival of Castor and Pollux there, with all the writings and goods destined for Your Worships' government. On the other hand, it pained us to learn that the livestock of sheep and bucks sent with the aforementioned vessel had been reduced by death to 18 pieces, which likewise met the same fate there, so that the esteemed order to send some of those animals to Jaffanapatnam could not be satisfied. Expressing our humble thanks for the kind sending thereof, this now serves as a humble reply: that it was very pleasant for us to learn from the aforesaid of the good receipt by the above-mentioned Commandery and Ceylon of our writings and goods sent under date of 23 September 1734 per the ship Castor and Pollux. We live in no less hope that this, being accompanied by copies of our humble missives, both to the Right Honorable, Severe, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Superiors in the Fatherland dated 20 September of the past year, and to Their High Noble Excellencies the High Indian Government at Batavia under 19 March of this year and written today, together with and alongside some goods obtained by us upon Your Honor's latest demand of 22 September of the past year, will also achieve proper delivery. The latter goods consist of: 28 pieces carboys of Spahan demanded and also received, 12 pieces chests of rose water, and 3000 lb. asafoetida, for whose amounts according to the accompanying invoice of [illegible], we kindly request that you please favor us. From the last-mentioned copy it will become fully evident to Your Honor the wretched condition of this realm, and that trade still lies moribund, and apparently will not catch any breath sooner unless this country is again blessed by the Almighty with a lawful ruler of the throne, under whose reign it may enjoy wholesome peace and tranquility. But since this, God help us, is not to be expected for a long time, we take the liberty on this subject to refer very kindly to the frequently mentioned copies, as well as to the accompanying extracts of our held meetings of 6 July, 1, 8, and 25 November last, from which Your Honors will further, we trust, be able to observe our bounden efforts, though not without hazard and much opposition caused by the haughty British, whereby the merchant was extraordinarily diverted, before they were able to master the same for that price. We present indeed as a certainty that if we had not undertaken a petition of our own from Kirman, we would never have succeeded and Your Honor consequently could not have been accommodated. For which reason we hope the small consignment sent herewith will provisionally contribute so much that the merchant with Your Honor can for the present be accommodated, while the other consignment of 13,842 lb. is due to arrive locally from Kirman any day, and will also be sent to Your Honor by the first available shipping opportunity. We make the humble request, in case the same should not be found to be of the right sort, and Your Honors might see that a loss instead of a profit would be incurred thereon, to send the same back to us, since we have no knowledge of it and it was entrusted to the brokers, who upon sharp admonitions, to our reassurance, did assure us that it was of a genuinely good sort; but also, as requested above, in the contrary event that Your Honor might return the asafoetida. The sample is sent over sealed in a separate small box, a duplicate of which remains here. In the meantime, we must further inform Your Honor that according to the respected missive from Their High Noble Excellencies at Batavia dated 15 October of the past year concerning the 30,000 lb. of curcuma roots sent in the year 1732 to Your Honor's government, the loss of 22 pagodas per bahar of 480 lb. incurred thereon had to be made good by those who took it in or allowed such defective goods to be placed into their hands. We therefore, at our meeting of 26 March of this year, in compliance with that honored order, took the same into consideration and calculated that this loss, reckoned at 6 guilders per pagoda, amounted to 8,250 guilders.
