From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736 we might obtain further instructions from your Honorable Worships regarding this, we shall for the rest dutifully conform to the extracts accompanying this from the resolutions of 6 July and 8 and 25 current drafted on that subject, and since from your Honorable Worships' dispatched missive to their said High Excellencies at Batavia dated 24 April of the past year it is established that the good prospects for obtaining the ordered Cottatse linens are so flattering, we hope shortly also to be provided with the requested samples of that sort in order to discover whether the Honorable Company might not be able to derive some good advantage therefrom, as we have been informed that the English do, and for that reason we take the liberty herewith to send your Honorable Worships 1 lb of very good sulfur with the request to have it investigated whether that combustible material is required there and if a profit is to be made on it, to require as much as shall be your Honorable Worships' pleasure, costing 6 lb md 1 1/2 or f 12. 12 according to our calculation, or as it has been valued here by other merchants. 2153 From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736 mate had in the meantime improved remarkably, and was almost in a state to be able to serve again, over and above that the aforementioned Noordwijkerhout, being destined for Tutucorijn, could in case of great necessity be supplied from Ceylon all the better with capable mates, in that manner we have granted the very same vessel its dispatches for Tutucorijn and Valkenisse directly for Batavia without any delay, with orders to the officers of the latter to accompany the other as long as could be done without prejudice to their voyage; and since we have understood that the aforementioned vessel Noordwijkerhout had on board some fruitage, garden seeds, etc. for this Commandery, we have caused the same to be unloaded therefrom and found them to consist of the following, namely: 1000 lb. large almonds 58 small bottles of diverse garden seeds 8 cases of rose water for the provision of which we hereby tender our friendly thanks to Your Honor, and we shall not fail to have its account dealt with as is proper. From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736— to pay off the toll of 2½ per cent, it is therefore in our opinion not advisable to proceed any further on this subject, although this prospect for the master's trade were indeed to be wished otherwise. Until now, we have not had the fortune to be able to communicate to Your Honors any improvement of trade, owing to the continuing unrest among the Sewase peoples and the greed of the Mogul regents. The city of Amedabad, or the capital of the government-province of Surat, has now been besieged for a long time by the newly appointed deputy from the court, Mominchan, who, finding himself not powerful enough to expel and take possession from the chief regent residing there of the Zoudpours prince Maharadja Abhessing, named Rettingsing, has therefore joined forces with the person who has been appointed on behalf of the Sewas General Damagie as the collector of the fourth part of the revenues from the lands, and recently the brother of the said general marched out with a powerful army. From Persia, under date 10 December Anno 1736. Whereas the English ship Prince of Wales, according to report, is to sail this night or tomorrow from here, and we have thereby obtained the opportunity to share with Your Honorable Worships the principal events that have occurred since our humble letters of dates 5 and 21 November of the past year, we begin by politely referring to the copies of the said letters enclosed herewith for greater security, although we wholeheartedly wish that their originals, with the small goods sent therewith, may have been delivered to and received by Your Honorable Worships long before the receipt of this. Regarding this realm and its precarious state, we have, by a humble letter on the 19th of this month to their High Noble, Great Worships, via a small French ship named Le Brigantin by way of Cochin, given a brief report. However, if time only permits, we shall not fail hereafter most obediently to proceed to a more comprehensible and thorough detail, seeing that this present opportunity was not considered secure enough to effect the same. We therefore request Your Honorable Worships in the interim to consult the copy thereof, and to be assured that as soon as we succeed in the said obliged intention, we shall take advantage of the first opportunity to forward it. From Persia, under date 10 December Anno 1736. Therefore, politely referring to that most humble copy report, we additionally send for Your Honorable Worships' perusal the principal news received yesterday from Isfahan, not doubting that therefrom the present state of His Highness Tahmasp Khan, along with the hope of peace between him and the Turk, etc., can be gathered, although it seems to us that the latter will still take much time and trouble. And in case the first-mentioned has had himself declared King, many tangles and adversities will undoubtedly be caused by Mirza Taqi, since having now been appointed as Duke of Dukes over the lowlands, and being inclined to extortion from the heart, he will also know how to invent new tricks with his new title. Yet we wish he may never return here and the Honorable Company may remain unmolested. From the enclosed translations, Your Honorable Worships will also be able to discern the extraordinary recently concluded Persian commissions between His Highness and us, which have been corresponded upon and executed, in the hope that the Almighty will be pleased to bless the outcome thereof to the welfare of the Honorable Company. It would also, in all likelihood, succeed well if one did not have very grounded reasons to fear two other nations, of which we shall speak more broadly in future upon a quieter occasion. Since at present little good claret and other table snacks, such as Your Honorable Worships usually were pleased to order repeatedly, have been obtainable, we have, considering that what was recently sent has apparently mostly been consumed and for a long time there will be no opportunity to provide for Your Honorable Worships, in hopes of a favorable reception, accompanied this with: 200 lb large almonds, marked No. 1 for Surat 50 lb kishmish, marked No. 1 50 lb raisins, marked No. 1 50 lb pistachios, marked No. 1 50 lb plums, marked No. 1 59 lb aurum pigmentum, marked Letter S 84 lb tutia, marked Letter T 8 cases of Shiraz wine, marked V and from No. 1 to 8, each of 3 carboys of wine, and 1 case of tarragon vinegar, marked No. 1, thus amounting together according to the enclosed invoice to 766 guilders and 17 stuivers, to be handled according to custom, with a heartfelt wish that all of this may be delivered in good and virtuous condition to Your Honorable Worships and From Persia, under date 10 December Anno 1736. and be found agreeable. Concerning the price of the claret and tarragon vinegar, we have some apprehension that it will seem rather expensive; but considering the carboys, calculated each at 10 and a half to 11 mahmudis, or 4 guilders, 9 stuivers, 4 pennings to 4 guilders, 13 stuivers, 8 pennings, the wine and also the vinegar come, according to our estimation, to much less. We request, however, to be enlightened in this regard as to whether we may make further purchases thereof directly for Your Honorable Worships in the future, in case good quality goods are to be obtained. The sending of rosewater has been omitted, on the supposition that there is still a stock of it, so that we trust to have done well in that matter. Furthermore, we request that it be examined whether the accompanying aurum pigmentum and tutia, upon being sold over there, would yield any profit for the Honorable Company, so that we may learn here whether one could accommodate the merchant on account of the scarcity of cash by bartering in the conduct of trade as our neighbors do, since if this is found to have some good success, it would be a proper means to thwart them, render service to the merchant, and avoid the heavy loss on money.
