From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. ought to be done in order thereby to prevent, as much as possible, all further dilapidations thereto in good time, and whereas Their High Nobles in their highly esteemed missive of 9 October anno passato written to this directorship have been pleased to permit that, if required, the necessary repairs may be made to that building, to the end that the same should not fall entirely into ruin and at a sale in time might still yield something, so shall we tomorrow, before the winter breaks through any further, have hands put to the work, so that one and the other may be properly repaired, and for which according to the calculation made and taken at the utmost a sum of 400 mas or 170 [illegible] will have to be expended, while we continue to hope for Your Excellencies' approval in this regard. Likewise, to be observed among other things in time, a price current of the merchandise, such as is currently traded, albeit very poorly, is annexed hereto, and humbly referring ourselves thereto, we have the honor further to present herewith to Your Excellencies an extract from our day-journal for your consideration, from which Your Excellencies will generally be able to gather how little reliance one can place on all the news that one comes to hear; but nevertheless, so as not to refer Your Excellencies entirely to that paper, we shall insert here that it is currently being spoken of very strongly that Lord Thomas Chan is said to intend to have King Thamas brought to Casbien by some commanders of the troops with all royal honors, and that he will later find that prince there himself in order to place the government fully in his hands again, which, for the well-being of land and people, is indeed heartily to be wished; but for our part, we cannot yet attach faith to this so easily, although by many the same is affirmed as assured; for, it is said, he has for that reason expressly issued a summons to the most prominent persons throughout the entire realm, to the end that they come to attend the ceremonies at Casbien, which will thus comprise 12000 heads, and of which from this city alone 300 people, consisting of all the prominent mullahs, shahzadehs or princes who are related by blood on the female side to the former kings, item hajjis or pilgrims, and well-settled burghers, must prepare themselves for that journey, in order to set out on the journey thither from here upon His Highness's further order; yet whether he may not well have something else in mind with this, namely to have himself proclaimed king by the people, will have to be seen in time; while he has also ordered hither a very rich masnad, or spread, to be embroidered with his drawn gold and precious pearls, which then, with the 4 gold stones thereto to be set on the four corners of the said masnad, according to calculation will come to cost a sum of 20000 thoman or ƒ850000, which is also said he is expressly having prepared for King Tamas; then, having restored that prince and having asked of him the highest pardon for all his committed misdeeds, he will march further to Garassan and from there against the Taymanis, a kind of Scythian peoples settled above Herat, in order to [illegible] the same, as they are united with the Qandahar Afghans and cause many raids in those regions, even in the sight of the sardar Thamas Quli Chan near and around Herat, so that the said Persian field commander cannot in any way prevent the uprising therein, and is himself thus compelled to keep himself shut up within that place, awaiting His Highness in person there with much impatience, if possible utterly to destroy them, and further to go and conquer the distant Qandahar; having meanwhile caused Erivan and Kars to be besieged by his troops, and he is said himself to have marched further upward to Erzurum in order to alarm the Turks even more, and to ruin their cities in every way; against which, however, it is also being whispered that there is great hope that the two disputing parties will make peace with one another, for the reason that Thomas Chan cannot keep it going much longer in such a manner, and in order to obtain peace he is indeed forced to restore the king, because the Ottoman continues to insist strongly upon that; finally, he is then, having made a tour to Tiflis, about to come via Ganja, as is said, to Casbien to kiss His Majesty's stirrups; all being so far well and good, that the king may become king again, and peace with the Turk may follow thereupon, to the restoration of the nearly and utterly ruined state throughout this whole, previously so flourishing and now destroyed realm; but whether one and the other will succeed according to the wish of many, the womb of time will have to reveal to us; meanwhile it is now said that a resident on behalf of the Russian nation is to be stationed here

From Persia under date 10 December Anno 1736. is to come, and the ambassador Galitskin having previously departed for Sula, has thereafter returned to this land again, in order to undertake the journey to Muscovy together with the Gollofa, the lord Mirza Kaffie, and the last-mentioned lord has not yet departed, as had previously been asserted of him, he being set to perform that embassy with a retinue of 1000 persons and great magnificence, but precisely why remains as yet secret. The rebellious Bakhtiari Lurs are currently very quiet, though some time ago they did not fail to carry out every conceivable villainy. And we must here further place before Your Honors that a few days ago, an order from Thamas Chan concerning the Banyan nation throughout this entire realm was brought here, to the effect that regarding all those who have died in these lands during the past 12 years and who may not have left any heirs, and whose rooms in the caravanserais are sealed, these are to be opened, accompanied by commissioners, and the estates found therein confiscated for him; but from those who might have living heirs, to seize so much of everything for him, and to let them keep the remainder, as well as henceforth to continue to act in like manner with the goods of all the Banyans who happen to pass away throughout this entire realm. With this the Nayib and others having made a beginning, this cannot but tend to the further ruin of the land. There is currently also much counterfeit money in circulation, so that one can hardly distinguish it from the good coin, which likewise causes no small embarrassment to the poor merchant. And in the meantime an order from the aforesaid Nayib has been conveyed, to send some persons who have thorough knowledge of the quality of pearls with ready cash to Bahrain, in order to purchase a good quantity thereof for him there, for the preparation of the aforementioned musnud, which without fail must be brought before his sight for the Nowruz festival, for which purpose the Nayib has also appointed some of the principal Armenians to make a voyage thither as speedily as possible. The bookkeeper Van Leijp, having surveyed and assessed his own poor means, selling even his clothes here with which he must appear among the people at the very least to maintain the Honorable Company's respect as much as possible, will not be able to hold out for 3 months longer to maintain the civil decency of his respective superiors, without it being possible to accuse him, as he believes, of having incurred any needless expenses since the departure of the merchant Schroorer from here, other than those which could not well be avoided. Thus he now finds himself forced to request Your Honors most obediently that you please support him if feasible, so that while the Honorable Company's name and honor are still maintained in these lands, he may not altogether succumb under the burden; for otherwise he will indeed be compelled to cut off commerce with all people and to live alone like a hermit, until by Their High Mightinesses' exceeding goodness he is delivered from here, which he believes will bring no small blame upon the name of his masters. Since it cannot well be possible, as is publicly known, to subsist on that which the Company has granted to a chief of this trading post, he has also nothing left of his own to spend further, whereby he could hold out much longer to maintain the decency of his respected superiors in all reasonableness, while up to now, in 5 years' time, he has both incurred debts and spent of his own about 640 tomans. Therefore he further most humbly beseeches Your Honors to please exercise some commiseration towards him, either, as already said, to allow him if possible to place the excess that is spent monthly onto the Honorable Company's account, to the end that the Honorable Company's respect may thereby be maintained, or else to have him replaced by another; for he will not well be able to get away from here otherwise, for reasons Your Honors will best be pleased to understand, of being hindered therein by the natives. Before we take the liberty of rendering the fully due reply to your Honours' highly esteemed letters, dated 19 November and 16 December of the recently elapsed year, we must very humbly request your Honours to excuse us for not sending herewith the copy of our latest respectful letter dated the 25th of the last-mentioned month of December, dispatched to your Honours by a trusted Banyan runner named Sjaboen; for, said with your Honours' permission, we think the same would be merely superfluous, because that courier, having already returned here some days ago, has assured us that he duly delivered that letter to your Honours; and holding that to be certain, we nevertheless take the liberty to accompany this with the transcript of our petition which we wrote via Lord Ihamed Laggie Chan to His Highness Thamaschan, and the forwarding of which was promised in our aforementioned letter, living in the hope that what is set down therein will be favorably approved by your Honours; just as we also departed with an enclosed copy of a letter which, for the cultivation of friendship, we addressed on the 20th December past to His Highness's treasurer Mierso Mhamed, and entrusted for delivery to Lord Sjeeg Hadie, hamkalam of the custom-house shahbandar; for that deputy toll-master had the goodness to have his services offered to us for that purpose, so that this very good opportunity was also embraced by us; and we must also inform your Honours, as is our duty, that this hamkalam, likewise as Lord Allie Zulthoen did, but in a much more polite manner, attempted to obtain some money from us as a loan; but we have also rejected him in that regard no less civilly, which we then hope will not appear disagreeable to your Honours. Presently proceeding to the answering of your Honours' aforementioned, always respected missives, we have the honor first to state that it was very gratifying to us to see from the first-mentioned how our letter of 13 October, together with all the books and papers transmitted therewith according to the register, were brought to your Honours by the runners Apriam and Pedroes. But it pained us to have caused your Honours trouble with the references we made to those aforementioned enclosures, and that we had not mentioned everything briefly in the letter itself; for which reason we then quite humbly ask pardon, and we promise regarding this to follow the old custom henceforth, and according to our modest capacity and bounden duty, to strive to afford your Honours all possible satisfaction therewith, while we shall also entirely avoid all offenses, in order to cause your Honours no further reasons for displeasure, as is indeed the duty of servants who are subordinate; thus, assuring your Honours of our obedience, we now look forward with great longing, together with your Honours, to what success the convoked imperial assembly will have; at least we also wish with all our heart that the same may serve to the tranquility of the empire and the flourishing of trade and of the Company, of which news is expected here every day; for His Highness, to that end, according to certain incoming reports, has arrived at Zjoul Mokoon, and is said to have dispatched his chappers to make those who were summoned hasten nearer in their march; just as we likewise come to learn that a considerable Turkish embassy has arrived at his camp to negotiate about the peace; but of the king's restoration nothing more is mentioned here, although the loyalists devoted to that wretched monarch are still of the opinion, and wish to maintain, that he will certainly be restored to the throne; may God grant we may see that confirmed with the truth, to the end that we may have the exceedingly great fortune of being able to impart that news to your Honours to your unspeakable joy, and that we also may heartily rejoice thereat. After the course of the Honorable Company's interests mentioned here can be attended to, we shall hereafter take the liberty to draw bills of exchange upon Your Right Honorable for such sums as shall be required for the permitted expenses, and otherwise for requisitions of goods, if Your Honors please to make them of us, for the procurement of which we are nevertheless, as dutiful servants, at all times prepared. However, we at the same time most humbly request Your Right Honorable to be pleased to prescribe to us how, in case of drawing bills of exchange from here and the same occurring for the expenses, we shall conduct ourselves regarding the loss to be incurred thereon, and to which account the same shall serve to be placed, to the end that no errors may be committed therein; while our humble thoughts incline that the burdens cannot properly be charged therewith, as being inappropriate. Nevertheless, we await Your Right Honorable's orders in that event, in order to obey them also according to duty.
