From Persia under date 31 December 1737 one has acted purely in this regard, and not failed, and the same shall, if at all possible, still be carried out before the departure of the often-mentioned vessel Foreest, to the end that one may then be able to render obedient report thereof to the above-mentioned Her High Nobles, the Highly Esteemed, according to conscience and duty. Further proceeding to the review of the Basra writings, it was found, according to the obtained list of the old copper work purchased there, that the said mineral turned out to run excessively high on hand, on which account it was jointly resolved for the welfare of the Honorable Company, by outgoing letters thither, to write to the residents there to cancel the same, until such time and while one shall be further supported with the highly honored orders of Her High Nobles in this regard, under recommendations to observe most accurately the highly venerated orders of Her High Nobles in case of the exchanging of coin species, as well as our mitigation used regarding the shallots. While we likewise shall await the highly esteemed commands of Her High Nobles as to how one must act with the prevailing expenses on the old copper work, since in our humble opinion this mineral, as well as other merchandise, can conveniently be charged with that burden, as the same cannot well be brought into comparison with the coin species. From Persia under date 31 December 1737 it was found there that the following shortages had been discovered, namely: on 89964 lb powder sugar, a shortage of 1151 lb or barely 2/3 per cent on 16642 lb candy ditto, a shortage of 1984 lb or ample 3 1/5 per cent on 21393 lb tin Malacca, a shortage of 118 lb or barely 1/2 per cent on 3314 1/4 lb cloves, a shortage of 2277 1/4 lb or barely 3 7/5 per cent on 221 lb cinnamon, a shortage of 5 lb or barely 1/4 per cent All which deficiencies, for the reasons given for them, over and above the Malacca tin for which the residents will be debited on their pay accounts at the purchase price, since that mineral is not subject to drying out or spillage like other goods, but also taking into consideration the excessive shortage of the candy sugar of 1984 lb or ample 3 1/5 per cent, yet on the other hand also taking into account that that sweetener had not been inspected or re-weighed since the departure of Castor and Pollux, which is an indisputable truth, it must also have lost extra more in weight; therefore this too, along with the previously demonstrated shortages, has been approved, since they were acceptable and could not have been avoided or prevented. Mr. van Suchtelen was also of this opinion, adding that the matter of the bag could well be so, and possibly the commissioners had only paid attention to the seals, not suspecting such roguery, and had not inspected the bag; wherefore he agreed with the Commander concerning the debiting. Having also sounded out whether to present a letter to the king under the envelope of the beglerbegi, he said, and advised (possibly with the consent of his master), that it would be better to delay therewith until the beglerbegi, his master, had taken Masquetta (attributing such to him) and thereby obtained the opportunity to send our letter upcountry with joyful news, etcetera. All of which reasons being sound, and long seen also by us (vide the resolution of 5 October of the current year) as already supposed then, made it apparent that, although little has followed so far from the good promises, we could nevertheless be fed with hope that, in time, the enterprise of Musquetta succeeding to the beglerbegi's wish, he might through his recommendations bring us something good in this regard, and apparently secure the entire restitution. Thus it is that, upon the frequent and daily urgent request (in accordance with the advice given by Aga Jaffer) of his aforementioned Highness to be accommodated with ships for the transport of his people to Julphaar, we have now found ourselves obliged to permit the small ship d'Anthonia to be employed for the service of the Crown. The dissensions aboard d'Anthonia and 't Huijs te Foreest increasing daily, one has been compelled, for the confirmation and preservation of peace and quiet on those precious keels, to cause the following changes to be made: The provisional chief surgeon of d'Anthonia, Jan Zion of Dort, who is a quiet and experienced seaman, is relieved therefrom, also according to his request, from the first-mentioned vessel, together with the second mate Hendrik van Hoorn of Amsterdam, to the end that they henceforth perform their service on the ship 't Huijs te Foreest; and from the last-mentioned vessel, the Foreest, shall transfer in turn to d'Anthonia the provisional chief mate Jan Martens of Woensdorp, who recently arrived from Boucher, in the hope that through this change many squabbles and inconveniences will be prevented. Honorable Sir and Gentlemen Whereas by Your Honors' wise resolution of the 10th of this month the undersigned's pay account was charged with ƒ 1064:13:3 1/3 arising from sugar delivered short at Bassoura in the ship d'Anthonia, brought thither from Batavia and melted during the voyage from here thither or in the river, caused thereby; it is for this reason that the petitioner turns to Your Honors with a humble request that he might be relieved thereof again, since he was discharged as bookkeeper of that vessel on the ultimate of April past. From Persia under date 31 December 1737 Regarding the fulfillment of the demands, positive orders having been given to the Company's brokers to report whenever caravans arrived with fruits or anything else, since pistachios, raisins, etc. were still lacking, and the same having been effected on the 8th of this month with the notice that they were daily expected, the proposal was made as to how one ought to proceed with the first sort, since some had already been purchased at Isfahan, though it was uncertain when they were to arrive. And therefore, upon the question being put whether to satisfy the whole of one and the other, or how best to act therein, it was approved by equal votes to have everything purchased in good, sound quality, and to have that which is expected from Isfahan serve upon arrival to satisfy the new demands. But concerning the rose water, no more than 12 cases of good quality having been obtainable, it was likewise approved to dispatch 10 of them to Batavia and 2 of them to Ceylon. It was resolved, after taking into consideration its nature—that without honored higher orders, the debiting in loco on the last of March of the past year by council resolution to the running salary accounts of diverse persons, in accordance with the highly esteemed letter dated Batavia 5 October 1736, could not be effected or relieved, and that this matter was found to concern the general office until such time as Their High Excellencies might be pleased to grant a gracious relief regarding the said parties, for which most humble request is hereby made—that said ƒ4781:5:- should now be written off at the main office by a separate entry. He said the cause was that the ship had not been completely ready when His Highness demanded it. But the interpreter pointed out that it was, after all, only a trifle to load 4 to 5 vessels of sand into the ship, that such was not worth His Highness being disturbed about, but that it might well have happened, while he was sick, that there were enemies who had filled the ears of His Highness; that he, Aqa Jafar, indeed knew well that he had no more vessels at hand, but that they had been requisitioned for the service of the Beglerbegi, but that otherwise the ship lay entirely ready waiting for the orders of His Highness; that the Commander had never failed, but had always been at the service of the realm and of His Highness, as His Highness himself had to testify several times when he was here before; but that it seemed all good services were quickly consigned by His Highness to oblivion; that the Commander, for proof of his intention, had been and still was inclined to offer a welcome gift to His Highness, to show that the bond of friendship had not been broken by the Commander, but that his Honour was minded to fasten it more firmly and make it unbreakable.
