Since from the aforementioned date until today we have had to struggle with astonishing torments caused by a vassal of the empire named Mohamed Takkie Chan, and have had to undergo soul-grieving suffering, best described within human capability in the addition to the cited copy of our most humble Batavia detail, we shall, for the sake of brevity, respectfully refer thereto, and furthermore report here that after the closing of the foregoing, we have only been able to obtain the tarragon vinegar and no more than 2 cases of rosewater. The amounts of which, being added here to what was previously procured, as appears from the invoice opposite, it is our humble request that these amounts may be booked according to Your Honorable Worships' honored orders in favor of this directorate, in the hope that we will be able to fulfill the deficiency of the previously obtained requisition on a future occasion. At least nothing will be neglected regarding the necessary attention thereto, while concerning the madder root seed, according to news received from Isfahan on the 23rd of this month, we shall still have to be patient until we are provided with it, since the resident there has until now labored without fruit for its procurement. Thus referring ourselves very amiably to its contents, we furthermore make known hereby that on account of the poor outcome of the 12 cases of rosewater sent previously, and regarding the findings received from Your Honorable Worships dated 13 March of the past year, full investigation was made in Council on 13 June last, but we could find no fault with those who procured the cases here, because not a single bottle was packed and properly matted except after accurate inspection and approval both by the delegates and by the ship's officers, as can also be seen from the accompanying extract from the clearance report. We will then only hope that the losses will not turn out to be so excessive as the thoughts might be regarding its advantageous yields, which we respectfully leave to Your Honorable Worships' more penetrating judgment as to how such can be possible. From Persia under date 31 December 1737 chiefly during voyages that last more than half a year, causes the other bottles to spoil. Concerning the result regarding the remainder of the asafoetida from Kirman mentioned in our latest letters, we have to our regret found in the Council's resolution of 22 April that after discarding an entirely unsaleable small parcel of up to 67 lb, there was obtained in total, including what was sent, 11497 lb for 52410 mamudis or 22274:5:- guilders, thus coming out at 11:5:4 guilders per man of 6 lb, which is 0:7:3 guilders more expensive. We can safely assure you in this regard that everything was examined to the utmost of our ability, and we therefore also wish to remain confident that this discrepancy will be offset by the good quality of that gum, of which the remainder consists of 1149 lb. After that date, in accordance with that resolution, occasioned by Your Honorable Worships' honored requisition of 10000 lb, we have been able to obtain 2925 1/2 lb. And thus in readiness for shipment: 4074 1/2 lb. The 6 lb of which comes out to 26 1/2 mamudis or 11:5:4 guilders. For the remaining deficit of 7074 1/2 lb we indeed had opportunities at various times, but no longer for that price, though indeed for 28 1/2 mamudis, for which the British accept the same very willingly, and can obtain it even more dearly, and for which reason it might well happen that one should at least not look at an increase of 1 to 2 mamudis, in order to give Your Honorable Worships complete satisfaction regarding the respective future requisitions, and regarding which we shall then await Your Honors' esteemed pleasure, under the assurance, however, of not letting any good opportunity pass in the meantime that might appear to obtain the aforementioned remainder at 26 1/2 mamudis per 6 lb thereof. Furthermore, the demanded madder roots up to 10000 lb in good quality are completely ready, costing 8 mamudis per man of 6 lb, and thus in total 13333 1/3 mamudis or 5666:13:8 guilders, being consequently 1/2 mamudi at 0:4:4 guilders less than the same sort last purchased for the Honorable Company, since on 27 April the further goods, such as candied cherries, cracking almonds, pistachios, and garden seeds, were also requisitioned from Isfahan for Your Honorable Worships, so we hope upon the arrival of one and the other to be able to accommodate Your Honorable Worships with our own shipping opportunity; but with respect to the garden seeds, we have deemed that we would do Your Honorable Worships no disservice by sending off good early-season goods, which have also not stood long in place, along with the requisitioned 12 small cases of extra good rosewater, 4 mamudis each cheaper, under the cordial desire that, according to the sincere promise of the bearer regarding the good care to be taken of them, they may reach Your Honorable Worships in the assortments just as they are now sent, whereupon we do not doubt we shall hear of the satisfaction therewith in due time. Kindly requesting that the amount thereof in the assortments, according to the small invoice up to 641:9:8 guilders, may be credited to the favor of this directorate. For the rest we have not much more to note except only regarding the empire, wherein the Nadir Shah still continues with much boldness against his defeated enemy at Kandahar, having a city with fortifications constructed to pass the time because of that strong frontier place. One does not doubt that the Afghans will shortly succumb entirely, but concerning the further march to Kabul, one is not really assured how it will end, since His Majesty may perhaps first grant an audience to the Ottoman Grand Ambassador, who according to inland reports recently arrived in Isfahan, or else have him dispatched unheard. His Beglerbegi Muhammad Taqi Khan is likewise making no small progress in Arabia Felix under the command of the sea admiral Latif Khan, having since Latif's departure captured Julfar and thus the entire pearl bank including Bahrain; his design is moreover either to appease the two brothers of the Muscat Imams, named Saif bin Sultan and Bil'arab, or to destroy the latter, in order to negotiate an annual handsome tribute for that service to the first-mentioned, as the Beglerbegi was requested to do; being able, however, to report nothing other than that the cited Bil'arab has already lost many lands and people in the battle fought, but not that he would be inclined toward an agreement.

From Persia under date 31 December 1737 treaty or surrender of his property to that party, and for which reasons they have already disputed for years, we may shortly learn the outcome thereof from the court, and then send the advice to Your Honorable Worships. Meanwhile, the lower lands, together with us, have the misfortune of having to endure an army of no less than 10 thousand cavalry and infantry, with as many grand Frenchmen who are in the service of His Highness, and God knows how long we in this city shall alas still be saddled with that considerable, detrimental inconvenience, pernicious to all trade and intercourse. Presently the Arabs, through extortions and tyrannical treatment by him on the opposite shore, are destitute of money, and together with the poor exhausted husbandman hereabouts, who still sometimes brought some vent for the salempores, have become so spiritless that on 26 May thereafter, after much deliberation in the service of the Honorable Company, we found ourselves compelled to decide to notify Your Honorable Worships by the first outgoing letter of that uncommon and sudden bad interval, as is presently done with the very friendly request, if it were at all possible, to countermand the portion of those cloths known in our humble requisition of 30 November of the past year for Gamron alone, namely: 5000 pieces salempores common bleached length 32 width 2¼ cobidos 2000 pieces ditto brown blue ditto ditto there having been received of the first sort with the latest ships 4560 pieces and still on hand 2400 pieces, and of the last From Persia under date 31 December 1737 last sort 6080 pieces and still on hand 4182 pieces. Thinking it therefore exceedingly necessary, before ordering more, first to see the troubles cease, as said. In our last, of which a copy is enclosed herewith for greater certainty, having mentioned how far we had advanced with the procuring of your Honorable Worships' requested assa foetida, and were looking out to obtain the remainder as far as practicable: this serves as its sequel, that according to meetings held under dates 14 and 26 August, we succeeded in that as well, though somewhat more expensive, and the consignment sent over consists of 11180½ lb., namely 1449 lb. from the previous remaining balance conformable to our humble writing aforementioned, 10031½ being the total provided on your Honorable Worships' last received honored requisition of 10000 lb., and thus 31½ lb. more, or 11180½ lb. in total; that small excess weight having been left with the lot in the last-mentioned decision in order not to break the jar, in the confidence that this would not be disagreeable, and no loss would be caused to your Honorable Worships through the amount spent over the cited price From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 price of that juice, seeing that at that time it would have been impossible to obtain it otherwise; and as regards the further missing goods, we did indeed attempt to let their full satisfaction follow with this; but to our regret we are as yet impeded, and shall therefore, after the dispatch of this, very gladly apply our best efforts to that end; meanwhile we very kindly request of your Honorable Worships for the coming year 1738/9, namely: 2750 pieces ambersia, length 11 to 12 and breadth 2 cobidos, namely 2250 pieces or 9 packs of the last received, and 500 pieces or 2 different lots drawn from a sample chintz of 320 diverse swatches, manufactured at Masulipatnam on 23 December 1694 for this directorship, namely: 240 pieces from the following numbers: 211, 222, 228, 232, 262, 271, 278, 281, 291, 292, 296, 301, each 20 pieces, and 10 pieces of the pattern no. 203, thus making 250 pieces or pack, with a friendly request to be permitted to receive the same sort and quantity for the residency of Bassoura to supply the said 500 pieces. The copy of 5 December prior, already answered in our humble last, and also the duplicate reply to the residents at the aforementioned place, were dispatched at the same time in response to their writing of 4 July of the past year; and since the excuse made therein has already been confirmed to us from the copy letter sent by those servants dated 20 June last past, we cannot but surmise that that strange method of the subalterns will not have been received well at all by their Honours, the High Government of India; however, we wish the best on their behalf, and take the liberty, if agreeable to Your Honours, to express by this in reply our very humble thanks for the kind communication regarding the delivery of our letter dated 23 June of the aforementioned past year, and that Your Honours were pleased to have accepted, according to custom, the invoice amount for some small goods sent therewith; but we would also gladly have seen that its carrier, the jhonny named [illegible], had turned up somewhat earlier than the date of 10 December (amounting to almost 6½ months) with the one thing and the other, in order to have been able to deliver the table refreshments truly fresh. 1019 From Persia, dated 31 December 1737. Where war has been or still is, one cannot expect high purchase prices, just as sweet peace and pleasant rest keep themselves absent; we have not been able to partake much in the latter for about four full months now. But when trade, or the soul's vein, cannot or may not circulate due to a lack of ready cash, and furthermore when the merchant is still fearful that what he might at times be inclined to spend—his hidden money—might be entirely lost, he reasonably withdraws his hands from engaging in anything. Because the Beglerbegi Mhamed Tagkie Chan or his men act per fas et nefas, solely to take what they can get, the poor merchant sits as much perplexed as we are, looking out with eagle eyes for a good deliverance from this apparently friendly to the Honorable Company, yet uninvited guest. For it is hardly to be thought that, as long as he remains here in loco with no less than 10,000 cavalry and infantry, any noteworthy trade in goods can take place. Furthermore, for the sake of brevity, we take the liberty in this matter to refer amicably, with regard to the further imperial as well as other matters that have transpired in loco from 4 April to 18 May, to the aforementioned modest letters sent to the fatherland. In these, after calculating the purchase of some From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 some goods per the younger ships brought in just before on 28 March, it was touched upon obiter. However, having later obtained a freer hand with all due attention, the goods, together with their purchase and selling prices, were compared in conjunction with the brokers. The Santipoerse mallemols and fine assortment of Cassas were found to be finer and better in quality than those received in previous years, but to gain 30 percent net in loco will offer no hope for us for years to come. The true reason for this is that one must be able to calculate gaining slightly less than 69 percent on each purchase upon its sale, if one wishes to attain the said profit of 30 percent. This directorate, ever since the year 1729, has been set back considerably by the well-known 22 percent loss on money, and for that reason is all the more obliged to exert all conceivable means to obtain a small profit and acquire the most sought-after merchandise to the best of human ability. We therefore flatter ourselves with Your Honorable Worships' esteemed indulgence regarding these too tender interests on our part, and therefore leave it very kindly deferred to your wise judgment whether we are not necessitated rather to give timely and proper notice of our findings concerning what would merely serve as an inconvenience to Your Honorable Worships and contribute nothing to real profit. We therefore 1021 From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 therefore, with Your Honorable Worships' permission, also take the liberty for convenience's sake to show in a separate note by way of a price current, for your consideration, how much one would need to obtain upon sale if the aforementioned 30 percent had to be reached. This notwithstanding our slight power in this precarious state of affairs, and the competitors' easy surrender of their goods, almost in the manner of stolen property. It were well to be wished that just circa 20 percent could be gained, which might then somewhat ease the extraordinary burdens. Out of consideration for the cited motives, and in hope of a desirable success, we send our modest demand, with respectful indication of what we have been forced to forgo in the previously cited estimate of 26 May, and on the contrary increased again, so that through Your Honorable Worships' goodness the one and the other may be provided and sent to us as soon as possible according to the remarks added thereto. On that account, and in the issuing of esteemed counter-orders regarding the items that have been cancelled, we shall be exceedingly obliged and grateful to Your Honorable Worships. 1027: From Persia, dated 31st December 1737. careful inquiries and learned first that there is no market at all for the tutty and therefore no fixed price on it, this merchandise which according to invoice was traded at rd 3¼ per lb or at 13: 13. — the maund of 68 lb being yielded by the English and French sometimes for 20 and sometimes also for 10 rupees according to occasion, there being also virtually no consumption of the mastic since people here, for the censing of deceased persons for which that gum would otherwise be suitable, generally make use of a poor sort of benzoin so that the same, being used solely for head plasters, is not much in demand and when needed is to be had at rx: 20: the maund as indeed there at your place it comes to stand at ro/a: 20: 14 14/15 /: the lb calculated at the x=r — 4 14/15 mes :), so that the most desired of the three would be the auripigmentum which people also use here in this country for dyeing; but the price also remains unstable, rising and falling in proportion to its need, such that the present market from rads 60 has well run up to rapt's 70 and also down to 17/a 40 the aforesaid maund of 68 lb, the same quantity which in Persia costs rds 58: 11 1/15 calculated upon the notification of di ds 13 3/3 for the lb, so that little reliance can be placed on the yields of both, and upon From Persia, dated 31st December 1737. 7 upon confrontation of the specified purchase and selling prices it is easily concluded that it would not be advisable, but on the contrary disadvantageous for the Company to undertake the trade, especially when one additionally takes into account the risk, spillage, and spoilage to which the aforesaid wares are subject in transit, as the trade of the Hon. Company cannot be conducted on such an unstable footing as that of the private English and French, who try it with all sorts of goods, backing out of it afterwards as best they can, be it with profit or with loss. Honored duplicate letters of the date 12 April, received the 4 June, per the French ship Le Diligent, and the duplicate from Basra the 4th of this month, having not yet obtained advice whether our humble little letter of the 21st of the first-mentioned month sent to you with the English ship captain Mr Woodford reached your hands, we therefore include herewith a copy thereof, in order to be able to refer to it for security in case of failure of the first; nevertheless hoping to hear the good assurance of its proper delivery shortly. Regarding the refreshments sent per date for consumption, besides the loss charged to account of 11 pieces of bottles of rosewater, it has also grieved us that those foreign seafaring minds did not take to heart what for their trouble over what was entrusted was gladly sent unnoticed for Your Right Honorable Directorate together with that of the Honorable Company, and on which account we humbly request you will please exercise your own disposition over it without regard to price, or forming thoughts that the same will ever be charged to anyone, it nevertheless grieving us for the trouble that has been caused thereby; but it would have been agreeable to us that concerning the sulfur and sent madder root for testing, it was not argued to be unremunerative, and best to stop a shipment of large lots, in order not to deliberately court the accountability that losses drag after them, and which their continuation could consequently also produce: so that consequently we must not fail to thank Your Right Honorable very affectionately for the amiable warning and trouble taken, that the amount according to the small invoice totaling f 543:13:- was credited in favor of this Directorate, since we shall also not fail to perform the same as soon as the ready 105 pieces of bunting shall have been brought to us with the accompanying notification of how much the same costs.
