From Persia under date 31 December 1737 presented for the maintenance of friendship, and of which the first, as Your Honours are already aware, were sent to Candahaar for Mirza Mahmed, the treasurer, two pieces, which then together for purchase and sale price come to amount to a small sum of f 65. 17. 10, just as the account thereof, also to be found in the Expense Book on page 65, can demonstrate in detail. From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 will appear meager, we nevertheless hope that it may please Your Honors, on the other hand, to take into consideration the bad times and scarcity of coin, of which this city is still constantly being drained, as almost all the money is transported to the King's army. For, on our part, as becomes dutiful and faithful servants, we have left no means untried to sell those wares at an even higher price, but nevertheless we could not succeed therein according to our innermost wish. It also now presses heavily upon us, which we heartily regret, that no reasonable buyers come forward for the remaining powder sugar (of the candy, all has been fetched for ready money since the month of September until now, except for 4 packages), but the spices we are forced to sell by one and two maunds, and for the 2 sorts of chintz, boutidaars and moeramaths, sollogessjes, sjecklassen, large chintz bedspreads, chamchanijs, small, very low prices, item for the salempoeris not even the inward cost price is being offered, so for that reason we must continue to hold them, while no one shows any desire for the handkerchiefs, as they are of no local taste, and in the meantime it shall From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 by no means be our fault in emptying the warehouses of the remaining wares as soon as possible, may God only grant that good buyers may resort thereto. On the 15th of the recently passed month of September, there appeared inside this lodge the Swedish Monsr. Hotter, already made known to Your Honors in our appendix of 6 August, who delivered to us a letter in the French language written by their High Mightinesses' Ambassador to the Ottoman court, his Excellency the Right Honorable Cornelis Kalkoen, under date of 16 November of the past year from Pera of Constantinople, to the Resident on behalf of the Honorable Company here, brought along for delivery by the returned Persian ambassador, the lord Abdul baggie Chan, From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 brought, in which last-mentioned name he, Monsr. Hotter (this one is described from Bassoura by a priest, interpreter of His Most Christian Majesty), has given us a great assurance that he would present the Company's affairs to the King in the best light, since a country cannot very well exist without commerce, etc., which bearer we then, consistent with civility, received and entertained in a friendly manner, and with expressions of gratitude for the trouble taken by His Honor gave in reply that we, in accordance with politeness, would not fail to have our obligations expressed to the said lord Abdul baggie Chan through the interpreter, as we also had done 2 days later by the said linguist, who upon his return reported that this gentleman had treated him very kindly and at the same time declared that he had enjoyed civilities from the said Ambassador of their High Mightinesses, and in acknowledgment thereof he had not neglected to write what was necessary to the Wellie Nhamed with his secretary in favor of the European nation, that they should be treated with all civility, so that through their coming and going the decayed trade might flourish again to the prosperity of the empire and of His Majesty, etc., From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 etc. Whereupon the interpreter, having delivered the requisite compliments of gratitude, had further replied to His Excellency, upon his inquiry why the English had moved away from here, that this, as the common rumor went, had been carried out by that nation out of conceived dissatisfaction against the court, upon which His Excellency meant to say that we, on our part, ought to try to mediate the differences that have arisen between the English and the court, against which the interpreter only answered that we were from different masters, and therefore each conducted his own affairs in particular, item that we could not meddle therein, and besides that were also not permitted to do so, whereupon His Excellency had said further that he hoped everything would go well in time, with repeated instructions to the aforementioned linguist to assure us, with his heartfelt greetings, of his true friendship and affection towards us. 1127: From Persia under date 31 December 1737 of the Nadir Shah has brought to a conclusion, the same being a son of Shah Coelie Chan, the administrator of the realm well known in the Company's papers, and a person of penetrating intellect, also very mild of disposition, but nonetheless no less covetous than the rest of this nation, which indeed seems to be a general defect among this race, and we must now await the course of time to discover whether that gentleman will also be favored with that highly important office of Confidant of the Realm, at which time surely, in accordance with the old custom, some presents ought to be offered to him in due time so as to incline him toward the Honorable Company; meanwhile, taking the liberty to present to Your Honors in all deference a copy of the aforementioned letter from the said Ambassador of Their High Mightinesses with this dispatch, we shall for the most part conduct ourselves in the humblest manner according to its contents, and make only a succinct quotation from it herein, that letter being primarily intended to maintain a mutual correspondence of letters, further praising therein the wisdom and greatness of soul of the repeatedly mentioned Persian Ambassador, Lord Abdul Baggie Chan, on account of His Excellency's conduct at the Turkish court in happily bringing to a conclusion From Persia under date 31 December 1737 bringing to a conclusion the disputes between these two Muslim peoples, regarding which all the Turkish ministers were very pleased and crowded together to express their satisfaction to him, likewise advising us, among other things, to become acquainted with the said gentleman and in time also with the Turkish minister who will maintain his residency here at this Persian court, just as one of the Persians will do in Constantinople, in order to facilitate the commerce of letters, wishing among other things that a peace between the Turk and the Russian court might likewise be concluded for the general welfare of all Christendom, to which the King of England and Their High Mightinesses the States General of the United Netherlands applied themselves greatly in order, if possible, to bring an end to the course of that war, in such manner that His Imperial Majesty was also working toward that end with even greater zeal, having had his mediation offered to the Porte to that purpose so as to see himself freed, through the conclusion of some peace, from his engagement with the Muscovite, his ally, while the Baron de Talman, Ambassador of the last-mentioned Power, had been invited into the camp of the Ottomans by the Grand Vizier, who was to winter with the army on the banks of the Danube; and further that the Knight Fawkener, Ambassador of England, and His Excellency the Right Noble Lord Kalkoen From Persia under date 31 December 1737 Kalkoen expected couriers from one day to the next with the latest instructions from both respective courts concerning the explanation which is still to be received from Russia, with the further wish that through God's blessing the cares devoted thereto may be crowned with good success according to the full desires of the respective principals; to which dispatch of the said His Excellency the Right Noble Lord Kalkoen we then, with Your Honors' respected approval, shall provide the requisite reply on a favorable occasion, and address the same via the route of Basra to the Noble Lord Jan Jacob van Liebergen, Consul on behalf of the honorable Dutch nation at Aleppo, for further forwarding, informing His said Excellency among other things of the principal news from this region, and how further, on account of the ongoing war against the Kandahar Afghans, the country is continually being ruined and the trade thereby almost entirely brought to a standstill, with which we hope not to err in the slightest. The Armenian Khwaja Pedroes, issuer of the Surat bill of exchange in question, having finally arrived here in the Armenian village of Julfa on the 9th instant in a sickly condition from the coast via the Kerman route, we, after his recovery, had him summoned inside this Lodge and spoke with him at length about that matter, just as subsequently many exchanges of words also took place several times with his masters, the latter shifting the blame onto their authorized agents and these in turn onto his said masters, since all are branded on the list of bankrupts, and through the arrival of that authorized agent thus

1431 Persia under date 31 December 1737 From have brought so many other creditors upon their necks, that they are intent on nothing else than how to conceal themselves properly here or there in someone else's house, so as to remain, if possible, freed in that manner from the hands of their creditors; and although there appears to be little hope of getting the moneys of the said exchange paid as promptly as we might well wish, we shall nevertheless not fail to apply our utmost diligence toward recovering some of those moneys and continually summon them to make payment, and if they are not willing to reimburse amicably, then seek by harsh measures to get those moneys into our power, of the success whereof we shall in due course report to Your Honors as in duty bound. As is customary, we also accompany this, among other things, with an extract from our daily journal, to the end that Your Honors, if it please you, may discover therefrom what news has been received here by us from 6 August up to yesterday's date; to which, in order not to become overly verbose in this matter, referring ourselves most respectfully for the greatest part, we shall note herewith the principal points thereof: how news was received here on the 2nd of the current month with the arrival of 3 chapars of the Vali Nahmat, at whose court, as we are assured, little or no justice is presently to be found, the grandees continually holding their hands open merely to conclude a trivial matter, receiving money themselves, and which then, God forbid, is not brought to an end according to the wish of the petitioner, that his nazir or purveyor has captured the Afghan place named Qalat, situated above Kandahar and toward the direction of Kabul, belonging to Haji Ago, uncle of Hossein Khan, has taken prisoner Sepahdar Khan, spouse of the last-named, together with Hossein Khan's son, and several other commanders of those peoples; item, has found a great treasure in the said place; and that the Vali Nahmat had caused Sepahdar Khan's eyes to be put out, and sent him thus to his master inside Kandahar to bring him that news, whereupon the other, in retaliation, had put everything Persian within his fortress to the sword; which is indeed utterly tyrannical, yet one has to expect nothing else from such barbarians than such inhumane deeds; but he, the Afghan, may nevertheless keep watching that the like may not also befall him and his, for according to what certain proud Persians assert as certain, Kandahar must now, through the loss of Qalat, Persia under date 31 December 1737 From Qalat, without doubt soon fall into the hands of the Vali Mamed. However, if we may give credence to the account of the Vali Nahmat's plenipotentiary, Aga Mahmed, one will still have to sweat much for it, since according to calculation there must still be 40000 able-bodied men within Kandahar, besides their being all richly provided with provisions and ammunition; remaining quietly inside as well, making not the slightest movement, having resolved to remain looking on in such manner in order to see whether the Vali Nahmat will not finally grow weary and raise the siege. But this prince being an obstinate man, it is rather to be thought that he will venture the utmost for it than abandon the place so shamefully, upon which certainly his entire reputation is now dependent; and therefore it would be a desirable thing that His Majesty might overpower that fortress the sooner the better, so that the continuous carriage of all the money out of this realm thither might thereby finally and at last cease. According to incoming reports, 6000 people have died in this city of Qom at this place from Kerman due to a kind of pestilential fever disease, and other places as well; having recently requisitioned powder and lead, of which the first Isfahan has had to furnish 5000 men's loads, while there is a prohibition from Governor Hatem Beg against selling lead to anyone; and a quantity of 5000 new muskets is being prepared here by royal order, each barrel of which must be 2 gez long; the Great Mogul meanwhile, according to what has been heard related here, having given leave to the entire Afghan race being in Hindustan to march to the aid of their brothers the Kandaharis. Persia, dated 31 December 1737 died there, whose death the Wali Nahmat himself lamented, because he lost a great deal in that man, he having been a shrewd and old fox who could have been of very great service to him, Wali Nahmat; furthermore, the Sardar from the direction of Hamadan and Kermanshah, by name Lutf Ali Khan, one of the brothers-in-law of His present Majesty, together with Ali Mardan Khan, Wali or Prince of the Feyli Lurs, arrived here in Isfahan on the 21st of this month with 6,000 able-bodied and well-mounted men, who, according to the first reports, after staying here for 15 days, were to march to Fars and so on against the Baloch toward Kech-Makran (these peoples are said to be resolute) in order to bring that nation completely into order if possible; but it was later learned that a raqam written by the Wali Nahmat to him was to the effect that he, with his said troops, may stay within this city 10 days, in Yazd 5, and in Kerman also only 10 other days, provided that he must thereafter continue his march along the same route that the Monarch took to reach Kandahar, and appear at court as soon as possible, in order to see then whether it will indeed be required to command him to Kech-Makran or elsewhere; furthermore, the eldest son of His Majesty, by name Reza Qoli Mirza, is said to have marched to Badakhshan, an Uzbek place where the balas rubies are found, in order, if practicable, to seize that sweet morsel as well; and meanwhile, the Khazanadar Mirza Abdul Hassan, the conductor of the harem of the dethroned King, arrived here in Isfahan on the 25th of September from that journey of his, and we have learned that he brought the said harem or women to that pitiable Monarch (still being titled Shah or King) at Sabzevar, and at his departure from there still left him alive, but that he was then in a very decayed state; who knows how the matter will ultimately turn out, though his restoration would be heartily wished for. Regarding the Russian resident, we can impart nothing else to Your Honours than that, continually boasting of the fortunate arms of his Empress against the Ottomans, he finally spread the news that he had received further definite tidings from his court that the troops of his Empress had routed the Turkish army, and had made the Grand Vizier himself a prisoner of war, whereupon the Grand Signior, being terrified in the highest degree, packed his baggage, abandoned his seat of Constantinople, and took flight to Sham, or the place where Damascus is situated; over which rodomontades and lying language others laugh quite heartily, so time must now reveal how the treatment by the Russians of the Khalifa Mirza Kafi, ambassador from the Wali Nahmat to that court, will be received by His present Majesty, for on the 5th of this month tidings were received by his family here from that gentleman that they must no longer expect to see him here and in this world, for which reason it was also ordered that his domestic affairs must be settled, and he has also sent over a reasonable sum of money for that purpose; we think then that this will provoke the monarch to greater wrath, and that it may very easily happen that the aforesaid resident will have to endure the severe storm of it. Of the Turks, we can only communicate to Your Honours that the ambassador of that court here, His Excellency the Lord Mustafa Pasha, as was told to us by others, is said to have received tidings from Constantinople several days ago that a general change had occurred in the administration of the Turkish empire, and that the Grand Vizier had gained a small advantage over the Muscovites. The bearers of this are Hassan Rabia, the Gamron shatirbashi, and Ewas, courier stationed here at the office, both of whom have fully received their rightful wages until mid-December next; with which, for lack of further serviceable writing material, we shall conclude, while commending Your Honours' worthy persons, together with the Company's precious interests, to the sole safe keeping of Almighty God, having most humbly saluted, we take the special honour to call ourselves, with profound respect, entirely humble, dutiful, and obedient. 1439 From Persia under date 31 December 1737 received and entertained with the common native gift, on which occasion however nothing but general discussions took place concerning past affairs, both on account of the acts of violence and continuous extraordinary taxes which have been committed over several years past at Costij against both the merchants and the inhabitants and were extorted from them through unheard-of torments, by which Gamron was almost ruined to the ground, because, being abandoned by the greatest part of the inhabitants, the merchants, also through dread of such tyrannies, arrived there very seldom and for that reason rather went to trade their wares at Bassora, where they otherwise enjoying a good reception would certainly bring the merchandise ashore at Costij, to which end then the principal Armenian ketgodas of Julpha, upon his given advice, have resolved to implore his highness the lord Mhamed Tackie Chan Beglerbegi most courageously by a petition to show some compassion toward the merchants in the collection of tolls, and to order for the period of 3 to 4 years that no more than 7 to 8 per cent be demanded from them, so that, being encouraged thereby, they may bring trade goods into this realm as before; This being also affirmed by His Honour, he thereupon asked whether we had received no news of the Company servants sent to the Shahbandar of Bushehr, how or if it might have ended with the trade there. Thereupon we gave in reply that we had indeed received the news from Your Honours two months ago of the departure thither of the Honourable Jacob van Schoonderwoert, together with the lesser servants added to His Honour, and of the merchandise sent since then, but since that time we had heard nothing of that undertaking. And we subsequently replied to His Honour regarding the maintenance of His Majesty's naval fleet, that it is indeed, according to His Honour's saying, very necessary, and that for the purchase of other anchors and ropes, and the further requisites, one of the King's keels was continually sent to Surat, etc., and was expressly employed to that end, since otherwise they would continually be in embarrassment because of it, for no more of that gear is given along to the Company's ships than they themselves need at the utmost, so that Your Honours, under favourable permission be it said, were still under a very heavy accountability through what was delivered of rope, etc., for the service of His Majesty, etc. Furthermore, regarding His Highness's further attack on Muscat, wishing him, the custom master, that he may therein be accompanied by fortune to the satisfaction of the King and the increase of his own honour and glory. Whereupon, finally taking our leave of the said lord Shahbandar, he, both then and later the day before yesterday at a return visit given to us, had the courtesy to offer us his service very kindly, to take along a letter from us for Your Honours, declaring that we would particularly please him thereby. From Persia under date 31 December 1737 as most humbly referring to the aforementioned letter. Since then, I have enjoyed the exceedingly great honor of Your Honors' always much-respected letters dated the 13th of December and the 7th of November last, together with the enclosures annexed thereto, received with particular affection via the private merchant couriers named Sjaboen and Hadje Allie on the 5th of November and 10th of the current month. Replying to these now in accordance with due obligation and duty, I shall say with all respect that it was very agreeable to me to observe that our letter forwarded to Your Honors via the Company courier Hossein Pollat and the private courier just mentioned above, the said Sjaboen, had met with the good fortune of safe delivery, and that Your Honors had seen fit to give the said Pollat his just deserts for the insolence and misconduct he displayed against the two gentlemen who arrived, Brand and Crane, etc., while in the interim Your Honors had also approved that, in accordance with custom, having obtained the reimbursement of the first bills, we had surrendered the known final second bills of exchange to their holders. For this reason, I am compelled to continue looking out for him for a few more days, and if he still does not appear, I shall have the said banian send further inquiries thither. For the kind transmission of the extracts of the meetings held by Your Honors under dates 26 and 13 July last past, as well as the passing of the expenses incurred here at the office for the account of the Honorable Company in the last-mentioned month, I must, according to bounden duty, express my humble thanks, subsequently informing Your Honors most respectfully that the main office has been duly debited for the error of the excess ƒ224:19:8 taken for the salempores, found afterward by the ad interim trade bookkeeper, Mr. Willem Meester, while seeking the balance, From Persia under date 31 December 1737 and the said linens credited for it in return in the new books of this office. It is consequently quite true that in this transaction we acted directly contrary to Your Honors' given order and the promises we made thereupon, but when one cannot do otherwise and refuses to trade in such a manner, one would, given the condition of the times and the scarcity of specie, almost, so to speak, have to sit on the goods forever. Speaking thereof, we were indeed compelled, for the sake of the Company's necessary and precious credit and because money upon bills of exchange to satisfy those people, who could not well be kept waiting, was flatly denied to us, to enter into that purchase, which, entailing great embarrassment, we would otherwise by no means have proceeded to the disposal of the mallemolen santipoerse, but would have retained those along with our own goods, not following the fancy of the merchants, and would have given notice thereof to Your Honours in order to be provided with Your Honours' esteemed orders and at the same time to be assisted by Your Honours' goodness in the necessity in which we were then placed, so as not to cause that incurred loss upon those cloths, which has indeed affected our hearts deeply; and at that time we also had high expectations of the arrival of the Turkish ambassadors, that matters would have turned out according to our wishes, but subsequently it was found that the people and the few merchants who arrived with them were by no means inclined to spend their money on voluminous goods, so that everywhere they looked for jewels in order to buy them up as far as they could possibly manage, while at that time we could also make no mention of the lack of demand for the other goods, such as that of the few handkerchiefs and large spreads, so that I now place this before Your Honours' eyes, no more being offered for the piece of salempoeris than 13 mamoodies or 5: 10:8, thus being a loss of 0- 4. 1/4 guilders per piece, after the cost price of the cloths with the freight, expenses, etc., counted therein, now comes to 6. 4. 8 3/4 guilders. For the sjeklassen, as being of no gold colours and also of coarse thread, 36 mamoodies or 15 guilders 6 stivers is nevertheless offered, whereby 2 guilders 7 stivers 8 1/10 fractional stivers is gained on the piece, because such a piece costs slightly over 12 guilders 18 stivers 7 7/10 fractional stivers, and in all likelihood no more than the aforementioned 15 guilders 6 stivers per piece will be obtainable. For chintz boditaars and moeramats together, 26 mamoodies or 11 guilders 1 stiver is offered to trade on credit, so we continue to hold them, since hope is given by the brokers of being able to trade them against Nowruz for more, which is then heartily wished; and those painted cloths would also have been disposed of if the brother of the well-known Aga Taher, previously the factor of Vali Nhamed, had not sold them here on credit for the aforementioned price of 26 mamoodies, whereby those chintzes have fallen in price. Nothing has ever been offered for handkerchiefs, yet towards Nowruz we shall see whether, by hanging up a whole piece at the chintz printers' shops, we can find buyers to use them as head wraps, whilst I most humbly request Your Honours to provide me with your esteemed orders as to how I should conduct myself regarding the salempoeris, small Chamcarijs cloths, and the large spreads, upon which, as mentioned, the Honourable Company will have to suffer a loss upon sale according to what is offered. The bookkeeper and provisional secunde of this office, the late Monsieur Joris Brand, was attacked on the evening of 19 9ber by a severe pleurisy, and all necessary remedies were employed for his recovery, and he was attended by the most famous of the native doctors, named Mirza Abdulla, who is continually called upon by all the grandees and most of the inhabitants, yet the will of Heaven concerning him was otherwise, for after having kept to his bed for 5 days, he finally fell asleep in the Lord on the evening of the 19th following, without having made any will or declared his last wishes, the dead body being on the following day, or on the 20th ditto, according to Christian custom and with all decency, brought to the European burial grounds located above the Armenian village of Julfa and at the foot of Mount Kuh-e Sofeh, and From Persia, dated 31 xber 1737 and there buried, committed to the earth. Persia under date 31 7ber 1737 From the so often recommended thriftiness will, according to duty, always be observed, the prices of the trade merchandise, although very little trade was conducted, still being on the same footing as listed in the price current sent to Your Honour in all respect in the month of 8ber, wherefore the sending of a further one is presently omitted with Your Honour's favorable permission. Since I have been approached by some of the prominent persons upon casual meetings, sometimes for good eaglewood, again for ambergris, and also for cordial stone, and I have answered them each time with polite words of not having any, as was true, it would however be a good thing if Your Honour had the goodness, if provided therewith or if to be obtained at your place, to send some of this and that to this little office, since the governors and other persons of good credit in these times can be given much pleasure with it. On the 26th of 9ber last, there appeared inside this lodge a certain Persian 1479 From Persia under date 31 7ber 1737 named Thamas Beek, former page of the dethroned monarch Thamas, who, having been received according to the country's custom, finally, after conducting some indifferent discourse, whispering in the ear of the interpreter Elias Sahid, said that he had received orders by letter from that King (who was still well at Jabswaar) to secretly demand from the Dutch Captain a complete set of new, though ordinary, European clothes for him, which he, Thamas Beek, then hoped I would not refuse him. Whereupon, considering the dangers arising from this, the reply given to that man in polite terms was that I, in the first place, was not provided with any new clothes, and in the second place, hat, wig, stockings, shoes, etc. would have to be ordered from elsewhere to thus have everything neat in order to be presented to a monarch. However, the said page, upon this acting the part of a man beginning to feel embarrassed, nevertheless asked thereafter how much time would elapse if one were to write from here to your place about it before one could have those clothes etc. here. Meanwhile, the governor of Tabriz, having departed from that place to Ardabil before the mortality had strongly set in, has completely destroyed the same like another scourge of God through unheard-of tyrannies, so that the Lezgis also did not cease to cause great mischief throughout the entire province of Shirvan. And the inhabitants who had retreated from Tabriz in good time began slowly and quietly to return there after the cessation of the plague, in order to inhabit that city. Even yesterday, regarding the small ship d'Anthonia, he still demanded the other one, namely 't Huys te Foreest, which ought already to have departed on 31 February last, and it seems as if all adversities wish to stay with us in its dispatch, with the detention of the vessels on the opposite shore, lack of ramals, barbands, etc. Yet, had we seen d'Anthonia or the Bouche returned in loco a month or just 20 days earlier, we truly would easily have been able to dispatch that vessel before his arrival, instead of now disputing with that uncouth beast over it. In order to comply as far as possible with the highly dreaded orders and yet also to preserve His Highness's favour, time being much too short to write everything in this letter, we shall only touch upon the fact that Your Honour's request to be allowed to purchase kitchen utensils is granted, and concerning the petitioned goods, we shall supply them according to feasibility as soon as we are in a state to do so.
