From Persia under date 31 December 1737. It is to be noted concerning this account that the Commander annually receives 90 jugs of olive oil, whereas a Director of Surat, Bengal, and Persia by the general regulation is permitted no more than 45 jugs of that liquid, thus 45 jugs too much received, unless his qualification therefor is demonstrated. Native servants' monthly wages: ƒ 45: 1 reduced because since the month of May 1730 no native stablemaster has been entered. Cassid monies or messengers' wages: ƒ 137„14:— seems to have resulted from certain correspondence. Extraordinary expenses due to fewer received and given visits, also that at present there has been no change in the chief administration as anno passato (when this account upon the arrival of the Commander bore in expenses ƒ 727: 3: 8). Paid ship's wages: ƒ 783: 2. 8 lesser in reduction of earned monthly wages paid out to the ship's crew. The garrison of European military: ƒ 2943: 2: 8:— arising from no small number of these men, whereby the rations and their expenses have turned out smaller; also there has been this year, 1629 From Persia under date 31 December 1737 this account shall also, for the same reason as that of the charges mentioned herebefore under L. a, fail to be examined. L. M. on the adjacent profits, surely not without as anno passato, no Lieutenant for 8 months. The garrison of Balinese military: ƒ 2493: 14: increased by a smaller number of these men as above. Hospital expenses: ƒ 979: 5 diminished by fewer persons cured therein. Expenses on merchandise, notwithstanding this account, apart from the charges and expenses, item losses, as not concerning this Directorate, has been balanced with the general, yet I submit, under correction of wiser judgment, these to be expenses that the trade there and the factory entail, and therefore cited in the foregoing table of charges, their slight reduction arising from paid barque freights and coolie wages. Secondly, it should be noted that Gamron, by the cited yield, solely on the spices sold there has gained or won in capital almost as much as we did on our entire annual turnover of all goods in general, which must considerably contribute to the enlargement of the general per Cents; Thirdly, concerning the spices in particular, it is found that the Basra ones far surpass those of Gamron, and fourthly, that the same would also have occurred regarding the other pound goods this year if the same had not been charged to us much higher than last year's, for here, merely as an example, shall serve the case of the Sapanwood, which, being sold last year at ms, yields an advance in the return of 55 3/9 schs per hundred, and this year, now that it was turned over at 12 m and thus one month earlier, only per Cents 244¼ rm, which demonstrates a difference of 308 2/36 more expensive in purchase, and Modest considerations on the Basra yield of the financial year 1736/7 composed for speculation as follows

Fifthly, concerning the piece goods, it has turned out most lamentably of all this year, since the recently received four sorts of Bengal linens, namely fine and common cassas, Santipore and Sawespoer mulmuls, were charged at such exorbitantly high prices that, in view of the unheard-of prices at which they had to be sold, to speak frankly, no profit could be obtained on them, which is also the reason that the said piece goods in general yielded no more than 12 5/8 per cent upon return, considering that the purchase of these said four sorts alone amounts to a sum of ƒ35623:5:8, upon which consequently the calculation of these profits and per cents across all the other piece goods together had to be reduced, and thus appears trifling of note, which were indeed to be wished otherwise, although it does not prevent every sort of piece goods sold outside of those four, according to our thoughts, from still having been realized with tolerable advances. 1687 From Persia, dated 31 December 1737 Pr. Whereas by the esteemed Gamron dispatch dated 13 September of the past year it was ordered hitherward to enter a loss of 4400 mamoodies on 9 bills of exchange, namely one dated 25 June and 8 dated 27 September, received here along with the aforementioned dispatch, to the account of profit and loss, and proportionally to discharge the said account again for as much as one would be obliged to employ from a sum of 2500 tomans, being effectively the entire amount of those 9 bills of exchange, for the purchase of gift goods as recognition payments; and that on that one bill of exchange only 400 mamoodies were lost, which monies at the closing of the annual books were left running as such; and that of the 5000 mamoodies, being the amount of those bills of exchange, only 155 mamoodies remained as cash balance, from which, pursuant to the order received, 94 mamoodies were also disbursed for the aforesaid gift presented to the serkesiek, so that on that basis only 61 remained as balance, and thus the loss for that is set at merely 5 mamoodies; the further disbursement of the monies of the last-received bills of exchange amounting to 5665 mamoodies, the loss thereon according to the net account is set at 20 percent, being 1133 mamoodies.
