From Persia under date 1 October 1737 Number 2. Original attestation given by the Armenian merchant named Godja Pagos regarding the affairs of the deceased Commander Mr. Dames Hey of blessed memory. Number 3. Eleven pieces of different original certificates from European as well as native and other merchants, with their translations, showing that Mr. Hey raised money at interest from all these people. Number 4. Extracts from various letters sent by Mr. Hey to the broker Moeltjent, wherein admonitions and promises were made to settle his incurred debts at the first opportunity. Number 5. Original current account showing that the late Mr. Hey fell short by a sum of 8371 mahmudis in the Company cash fund, and for which he granted a bond to Gutchi. A complete set of all these cited documents and proofs and others shall be sent under several enclosures to Gamron in due time. However, so that nothing from this bundle may be concealed, this original was written in the signatory's own hand, and also provided with three different binding cords, one below, one above, and the third in the middle, the ends of which have been sealed in red wax under the Company mark and the undersigned ordinary seal, in order to be addressed in this state under flying seal to Their High Excellencies the High Indian Government. The undersigned now further implores with the most humble submission that the very high and above-mentioned Their High Excellencies From Persia under date 1 October 1737. may please use great kindness to regard this writing as a fair justification and likewise a demonstration of where and how those aforementioned Company funds to the amount of 86912 guilders and 10 stuivers were employed or made into a matter by the former broker Moeltjent without his knowledge, provided that all these marginal replies have been set down with no other aim than solely to destroy all such adverse conjectures and biased objections as the Honorable Commander and Council of Gamron have seen fit in this subject case to bring against us so rigorously and without the least commiseration. Furthermore, the petitioner implores with an equal humility that Their High Noble and Respected Mightinesses may kindly take pity on him and grant a generous pardon regarding the loss, together with the hope that he shall not be destined, through this fatal harmful accident caused without his fault, to be hindered in the advancement of his further fortune in the service of the Honorable Company, wherein he shall incessantly endeavor to watch according to his utmost ability, and to provide the highly venerated Their High Excellencies with the required satisfaction as much as is in him, so God grant, and that he may be so fortunate as to remain with honor to the end of his days. Gutchi In margin: Bassora the first of November 1737 I From Persia under date 1 October 1737 I, Moeltjent, son of Ziekieser, acknowledge that this below written is written with my own hand at Bassoura: that the Honorable Mr. George Gutchi, whenever trade made any progress and goods were sold inside the Company lodge here, repeatedly instructed me above all to take care to exchange the received monies and have them ready so that, if the opportunity should arise, they could be sent towards Gamron per departure of a ship or vessels; upon said commands I gave the Honorable Mr. Gutchi assurance that said monies were always ready for his service to be sent by the first opportunity. The Honorable Mr. Gutchi urged me to do so not once or twice, but indeed 15 to 20 times, and was repeatedly answered by me: Sir, set your mind at rest, the cash is ready whenever Your Honor pleases to have it. However, to my regret, and having been forced thereto, I used said Company monies from the sales and received by me to settle some of Mr. Hey's debts, because the said late gentleman assured me that upon his arrival at Gamron he would do his utmost to pay off his outstanding debts to me at the first opportunity. But if it should come to tarry and the creditors trouble me, I should settle it with the monies coming into my cash, in order thus still to have the advantage thereof to make the interest more bearable. This is what he said at his request, laying it upon my head, as I also had in my possession a sum of about 2000 tomans, of which I paid some debts, in the hope of receiving my monies from the Honorable Mr. Hey from Gamron within a short time. But to my soul's sorrow I learned the sad news of that gentleman's death, so that by the harassment of the creditors I was forced to use the remaining Company

From Persia under date 1 8br 1737 Company money still to be disbursed therefrom, and to my inner regret, not being able to satisfy the debtors with the said money, but on the contrary, there remains a debit balance of a sum amounting to 1000 thoms. charged to the said gentleman. This above-mentioned declaration I swear contains the complete truth. Below stood: thus translated from the Banyan by explanation into Persian according to the best knowledge by: was signed: W:m Schaers. In margin: This day 25 March 1735. Attestation given by the Armenian merchant called Godja Pogos concerning the affairs of the deceased authority, the honorable gentleman Dames Hey, as follows: The contents hereof comprise that I, Pogos son of Jacob Sjan, declare and swear that the late gentleman D:s Heij, being on the verge of his departure, requested to borrow on interest the undermentioned money for his account; for, as the honorable gentleman George Gutchi and the gentleman Abraham van Suchtelen and assistants are well aware, and not doubting that the honorable gentleman C. Koenad with his presence here was also an eyewitness thereto, I, Pogos, was a bosom friend of the frequently mentioned late gentleman, and trusting me in everything, he disclosed his financial state to me and employed me for the above-mentioned service, to wit: 400 thoms. from the French private merchant Mons:r Boulleron 300 do from the English Resident W:m Marten Frensch 400 do from the Moorish merchant Hagie Omar Tgelebi 360 do from do do do Bekier 200 do from the sister of do Zadik 150 do from the Armenian do Stephaan 1810 thoms. These aforementioned sums I have, as stated above, 1759 From Persia under date 1 8ber 1737. borrowed on interest for the said gentleman, and for some of these sums I granted the creditors bond notes with my customary signature, which after the expiration of the set time were returned again by Moeltjent, and for some of them new bonds were granted by the said broker. Besides these debts already mentioned, there are another 3 sums amounting to 600 thoms. borrowed on interest by the frequently mentioned Moeltjent from different Moorish and Banyan merchants, of which I am also well aware. Therefore, the debt of the late gentleman amounts to my knowledge altogether to a sum of thoms. 2410, which debt he left behind upon his departure from here. Furthermore, the said late gentleman requested of me up to 2 or 3 times, saying: Pogos, Mr. Gutchi is well aware that I depart from here with debts, but not of the sum thereof, and for that reason I request of you that you do not make known to the said gentleman how much it amounts to. The said late gentleman also testified to me: Pogos, I know well that when I shall have left this place, in all probability a fairer trade is about to take place in the Company's lodge, and Moeltjent will be able to be freed from his debts all the sooner; but if misfortune would have it that no trade is met with and the sums which Moeltgant has taken on account for me shall have expired, I request that you do not allow the creditors to treat Moeltgant harshly in any way, because I hope, without their expense, to send cash money hither upon my arrival at Gamron. I have also sent two letters from here to Gamron to the said late gentleman, comprising 1761 From Persia under date 1 8ber 1737. comprising that that late gentleman should set his mind at rest concerning his outstanding affairs with Moeltgant. I also had the good fortune, at the request of that late gentleman, to be on board with him and to spend a day and night in pleasure amongst ourselves. At one time it happened that the first resident, the honorable gentleman Gutchi, being somewhat fatigued, went to sleep, whereupon the broker Moeltjent, in my presence, on two several occasions humbly and lowly requested to grant him a small note with the acknowledgment of debt signed by him, in order to set his mind at rest; the said late gentleman replying to Moeltjant: you fool, having been with me for so long, do you not know my disposition yet? This is all that I am aware of, and God Almighty is my witness that all that I have cited here contains the truth; for the said gentleman is deceased, and I am also a mortal who shall be subject to the same. Furthermore, I received from Aleppo for the account of the said late gentleman 52 pieces of narrow broadcloth, or 1129 cubits according to measurement; the said cloths were cleared by me and paid for to a sum of 62½ thom., he having also requested me, upon the arrival of the said goods, to deliver them to Moeltjant, just as I, upon receipt thereof, informed Moeltjand and had him called to come and receive them; but he requested me to be so good as to leave the said goods in my custody until the time they might be traded, and to lend him a sum of 300 thon., which I lent to him at his request, with the promise made by Moeltjant that if, after the sale of those cloths, anything should be found wanting, he would satisfy it in full. From Persia the 30th of April 1738 Concerning the trade. The adjacent inventory of the merchandise is deferred until August. This concerns the remaining goods, which are properly accounted for. With our slight details, which were attached to the aforementioned humble report of the last December of the past year and dated the ultimate of January together with the 3rd of February of this year concerning the trade, we have communicated the essentials in brief to the best of our ability, and therefore we humbly refer thereto. And since we have not been able to do otherwise, on account of the daily porters whom one has still been able to obtain, than first to have carried out the unloading from the Adriana of the spices and provisions brought along, item the delivery to the Anthonia of its provisions for the voyage, and that the merchant, having come for some pounds of goods, also had to be assisted by those people, one has also not been able to take in hand the inventory of the merchandise at the ultimate of February last, and therefore had to postpone it until the coming month of August. The demand is increased. And since it cannot be foreseen whether the inland troubles will long continue to obstruct the trade in Gamron, or whether they will take a turn for the better, which is heartily desired, we shall conduct ourselves very submissively according to the present demand sent over de novo with some increase and arranged according to the last respected orders received, living in the hope that the same may be found to conform with Your High Excellencies' worthy intention. Upon the receipt of the goods in kind most humbly petitioned therein, as may now be trusted, it can probably also be set for a full year, and according to the brokers' assurance there will be no difficulty in their sale, especially if the trade to Bender Abbas may be continued, of which we shall still treat separately and most humbly in this letter. Concerning that which has obtained approval, thanks are expressed. Sale of 30 @ of cloth. And what was accomplished regarding further sales. This also contains an item of thanksgiving, and of what was sent to Cochin as samples nothing good has been heard. Meanwhile we are obliged with equal respect to express our thanks for the honored approval of our increase and decrease of the prices on some merchandise made before this date. But notwithstanding the latter also applied to the cloths received per the ships 't Huijs te Foreest and the bearer of this on the 22nd of May of the past year, this has nonetheless added very little to the aforementioned Gamron remainder, since no more than 30 @ from a piece No. 668 green assortment was sold in the past month of March for the last set price of mt 20. However, for all the remainder all required precaution is employed, and the brokers are no less continually exhorted to help promote its sale as well as that of the other merchandise to the very utmost of their ability. We must not fail to express our most humble thanks to Your High Noble and Right Worships for the gracious consideration taken of the samples in kind sent over per the Stadwijk and Ritthem, and the report obtained on that account per the Opperdoes concerning the value of each. From Persia, the 30th of April 1738. The exchange of iron was undertaken on a good footing and converted, so that it will cause no disfavor. On the adjacent Coast of Malabar, attempts were made with the samples sent in the hope that they might succeed, but to our regret, that was also fruitless. In the meantime, having good hope, your truster that Your High Right Honourables will also kindly accept our trade in aurum pigmentum made to date, as noted among other items in the sales entries under bar iron (of which in the past year no more than 3021 lb was sold). It is made known that 300 lb of the aurum pigmentum lately rejected by Your High Right Honourables was negotiated against it, and before the Adriana arrived, this was already halted by council resolution of 5 December last, because in doing so we had taken as a foundation and guideline the assessed value presented in the report from Your High Right Honourables dated 14 July 1735, which points out that the aurum pigmentum lost scarcely 9 per cent against the home price, and now the maund of 6 lb was negotiated at 15½ mahmudis, whereas it was then calculated at 18 mahmudis. The exchange now comes out cheaper against the said weight of 6 lb per maund, yielding 2½ mahmudis, besides what the bar iron in itself retains in sales profit, not without gain, of 16 3/1 per cent. Subtracting from this the home loss of 9 per cent, there would still be a net profit of 7 per cent. 1887 From Persia, the 30th of April 1738. The persistent army here also contributes to its present scarcity, and besides that, all that might still be obtained is only old grain from the previous year, which, even if it could be bought up, would notoriously for the most part spoil on the voyage. Therefore, in the session of 6 March, we regulated the purchase for Bandar Bushire accordingly, and in letters dispatched thither on the 17th following, wrote as will appear from the accompanying copy. For the packing thereof, 200 pieces of gunny bags have first been sent thither, to the end that, according to orders, they may have them prepared in stock. The newly formulated double requisition has also been reverently noted. Having meanwhile had the good fortune to see the long-awaited arrival of the vessel Opperdoes appear in this roadstead on 27 March just passed, and thereupon to receive Your Right Honourables' venerated original missive of the same date as the received and highly esteemed one, all of which was in conformity with the duplicate, while at the same time in council, with the requisite respect, a reading was taken thereof, as well as of all the very worthy home and further writings accompanying it, complete according to the list; besides which there were also honourably brought to our hands two respected subsequent letters of 14 and 16 October of the past year, by honoured order of Your Right Honourables via the Command of Mallabaar, the first with a pennon, and the second regarding observance in fulfilling the requisitions, as well as concerning the regulations, not being able to deviate from what is contained therein; for all that we have had the honour to receive in addition, we thank Your Right Honourables most sincerely, under the respectful assurance that we shall dutifully observe the highly revered orders to our utmost power, and obey them as our steadfast rule. From Persia, 30 April 1738 as is to be presumed, may go more favorably, while in the interim we behave humbly, having arrived at a more favorable time for trade, as the goods were quickly disposed of, and a profit of ƒ 67,575:7:8 was made thereon; and in addition to that, by the end of April of the same year, a further ƒ 19,337:2:8 was gained, so that the profits at Bassoura alone in that period amounted to a sum of ƒ 86,912:—: which indeed appears not disagreeable, and in the course of time would seem to promise the long-desired change for the better, the more so because the Gamron ministers, according to a certain letter of 9 November 1734, say they live in hope that if it might please Heaven to let them maintain such a quiet time as they then had, their remaining stocks, if not entirely, at least for the greater part would be sold before the end of that financial year. From Persia, 30 April 1738 In respect of the Bassoura office, concerning whose matter we have mentioned the essentials herein with submissiveness, we can only say that trade there would never flourish more than if the English did not spoil it; but it is apparent that through their bankruptcies, which they are bound to suffer, they will eventually cease risking everything on credit, at which time the ministers will be able to make equal progress with them, whereas otherwise it is impossible. From another letter of the ministers from Bassoura, sent to us overland, we have learned that at the office there, from 1 September 1733 to the end of August 1734, a net profit of ƒ 39,435:12:— was attained, and from 1 September 1734 to the end of August 1735 ƒ 30,634:8:—, having gained among other sold merchandise 28 per cent on 1035½ ells of cloth, which also appears quite good, and under these circumstances has made us resolve not to break up the office at Bassoura for the time being, but in that respect, as well as with regard to the Company's entire establishment both at Gamron and at Spahan, to await better times. Indeed, we would even authorize Your Honors to grant the request of the servants at Bassoura to the extent that they too might display such a flag from the lodge as the English do, and for that purpose hand over a modest sum of a hundred tomans or thereabouts to the pasha as a gift, were it not that the limping horse was again to follow so deplorably behind, as Your Honors will have already learned from the letters, copies of which were sent to us overland. For not to speak of various unaccountable damages and deficiencies occurring on the goods sent over, such as the loss of 33 per cent on 30,000 lb of madder root sent to Coromandel, which Your Honors have consequently rightly charged to the account of the buyers, one might still somewhat accommodate the deficiency of a shortage of 270 lb on 37,962½ lb of nutmegs packed in chests and strewn with cloves, since the ministers report to Your Honors in the aforementioned letter of 23 September 1734 that of this lot, 8,740 lb of worm-eaten nutmegs were sent back to Batavia. But how one could calculate a shortage of 446 lb of cloves on the lot of 3,164 lb with which the said nutmegs were strewn, besides another 50 lb of dust, thus making together a short-weight of 476 lb, and pass it off as approved, is not equally easy to comprehend. For the deficiency in the nutmegs might have been caused by their already being worm-eaten before packing at Batavia, but such cannot be thought of the cloves, which could not have lost so much through drying out, and much less through decay or worm-eating. The short-weight of the cloves in the journal of 173¾ page 105 cannot, apart from the reasons given therein in its annex attachment number 22, be understood other than that it must have been caused by the repeated handling of the large quantity of chests, by the rolling of the nutmegs on the 40 lb of cloves placed therein according to number 20 within a year's time, as number 21 in that journal indicates, not that the same were spoiled, but remaining unperceived by the eye in the dust, or trodden upon by the clumsy coolies of these lands, since regarding this the handling has been carried out according to oath and duty, as far as number 23 assures us. Just as little could a short-weight of 1,263¾ lb have occurred on 81,879¾ lb of copper pice, according to Your Honors' letter of 8 October 1734, and that this can reasonably be attributed to the poor condition of a large number of the sacks in which the copper coin was held, because some 270 pieces of them were found smothered, rotted, and totally unusable. For however rotted and unusable the sacks might have been, the copper, which cannot rot so easily, should nevertheless have remained in the ship De Windhond, with which it was transported. The underweight on the pice contained in the above-mentioned esteemed period, after investigation made, did in truth arise from nothing other than the weight being found too light, caused by wear and years, this being respectfully verified and demonstrated in our humble letter of 24 August 1735 and the report of 7 February of the same year sent therewith, showing that on the last-mentioned day there was a shortage of 49 lb on 113¼ lb. Thus, with all due respect, it seems probable that the receipt of that copper coin with those light stones must also have yielded such a delivery, and that the quantity caused the short-weight.

And therefore Your Excellencies should not have passed over a bag, which must so indisputably clearly have caught the eye, so easily, but should also have charged the guilty parties to their account, which we also understand must still take place if only they can be found. Regarding the considerable loss of 28 per cent on the Kirman wool, we express our painful regret, and we have no further motive to report from those excessive purchase prices in those times than what we have most humbly communicated, among others, in the mentioned submissive letters of 24 August 1735 and 30 November 1736. But since a certain Mr. Cadix, former Kirman agent, has passed away, it has succeeded somewhat better according to the agreement made, and therefore we continue to hope that the present prices of three closed book-years will not displease Your Noble High Mights, while we furthermore in this respect humbly conduct ourselves according to the article included herein concerning the fleece, and likewise to the highly respected requisition, with the most submissive reply made thereto. Even more has the Company been harmed with the recently sent consignment of Kirman wool, which, after it had already been garbled at Batavia and purified of the rotten or spoiled parts, was nevertheless found in the Netherlands to be so bad and unmerchantable that upon sale one had to lose 28 per cent on it. And thus one part of the seemingly fair Persian profits is offset by all kinds of damages and negligences, and the rest, indeed the most of it, by something that for a long time has been very characteristic of the Persian directorate, namely the frequent bankruptcies, both of the Company's own servants and of the brokers. For without the old debts of one or the other, which still continue to run in the books and amount to excessive sums, having been paid up to now, we have seen from the copies of the letters written by the Basra servants to those of Gamron, and received by us overland as well (however long in style, small in handwriting, and difficult both to read and to understand, which were also contrary to our express orders contained in our letters as early as 9 July 1715 and 24 June 1716, and which order was repeated again in our letter of 3 September 1735), yet could sufficiently understand from their contents that newly again a loss will occur of around f86000:—:—, because a certain broker named Moeltjent (as the Gamron servants report in one of their letters dated 25 May 1735) had employed the money entrusted to him for exchange toward the payment of the remaining debts of the former and deceased resident James Hey. Since concerning the setting aside with the ministers there no other reasons have already been respectfully demonstrated pro dato than that Moeltjen through his former chiefs and the broker himself must also have caused the damage, we shall respectfully refer thereto. The adjacent feared order will be followed by us with dutiful care and candor, and we hereby beseech for a gracious pardon, having previously petitioned to trade on credit. 1823 From Persia, 30 April 1738 The requisition having been brought to an end in the meeting held on the 22nd of this month, and having been revised once more with due attention, the required merchandise together with other necessities which are requested in this directorship for the coming year 1738/9 with the pleasure of your High Right Honourable, we therefore most humbly pray that it may be graciously honoured with its fulfillment, and that it may not be taken amiss that it has furthermore been resolved and solicited to pay no more regard to any previous humble requisitions, but solely to the humble requisition presently offered herewith in all veneration already mentioned hereinbefore; and in which have also been included the merchandise recently received with the utmost gratitude per the cited ship Opperdoes, having furthermore by that resolution to our inward sorrow been obliged to proceed to the cancellation of some of the remaining 32 bales of Guinees Tutucorijns for the reasons alleged therein, in order to be excused from them if at all possible; and we have in that respect also dutifully submitted that request in our present letters departing simultaneously to the Right Honourable Lord Gustaaff Willem van Imhoff, Ordinary Councillor of the Dutch Indies as well as Governor and Director together with the Council at Colombo, and to which we refer ourselves in all humility. Concerning some merchandise having been with 1640 lb of pepper, upon the first re-weighing, dust of both sorts yielded 36 lb, and according to the estimate of 27 March last after garbling also 14 lb, as well as 1679 lb of culled and mite-damaged goods, of all of which the further reasons will await the findings on the ship, when the same shall be presented; meanwhile, it has been made known by the merchant and warehouse master that the nuts had fetched 18 lb and the pepper 7 lb more upon the first weighing here at the scale than was written down, which the ship's officers say must have been caused by a more generous weighing-in of the aforementioned parcels when they were received.
