2004 From Persia under date 31 December 1737 request made by the Residents, by letters of 29 December 1737, consisting of cordial stone, ambergris, and eaglewood, since they mention, among other things, that the Persian and other wealthy gentlemen are to be greatly pleased therewith. That now communication with Kirman and what the wool factor Avidanees has imparted to us by his writing of the 27th of last week, received here, consists, aside from some trifles, mainly in a request for authorization against the Nowruz festival to compliment the regents there with the ordinary gift, as well as to obtain approval of an expenditure made amounting to 100 mamoodies at ƒ 42:10 to the King's vizier named Mirza Hossein, who through this small offering is also said to have brought about that, instead of lending 1000 tomans in white at ƒ 42500 to the beglerbegi there, Abol Hassan Khan, he has now gotten off with 50 tomans at ƒ 2125:-, and has partly escaped this abominable demand; and since the former involves an old custom that is not easily forgotten among that nation when they can calculate a profit from it, and the other cannot well be turned down without causing resentment, in case one should wish to withhold the entire morsel from such strange supplicants, it was resolved to grant him permission to give a gift at the Nowruz festival, but to connive at the other item of ƒ 42:10, charging the first to the new wool account, as the old one or that of the past year has not yet been received, leaving one unable for now to provide a proper demonstration of that incoming fleece as to how much the same costs the Honorable Company in total, on account of which the 300 tomans at ƒ 12750:—:— left with him in due time for the aforesaid purpose still run to his debit; while upon a good opportunity he shall also be exhorted de novo to apply diligence to secure 20000 lb, as is the tenor of the demand, with recommendations not to undertake the purchase at too high a price, since in his cited letter he already makes some mention thereof. After which was taken into reconsideration the resolution drawn up by the officers of the Adriana Meerrm on 17 February past in the Gulf of Persia, regarding putting into Muscat and drawing a small bill of exchange there on us for the account of the Honorable Company, amounting to 264 mamoodies at ƒ 112: 4:-, which was expended and said to have been used for the purchase of 10 leggers of water; and whereas it is found therein, among other things, that out of 6 whole and 10 half leggers during the voyage from Cochin up to that date, being 59 days, a deficiency of 160½ drams was found, and that besides this little of that liquid was left in stock, as well as having encountered contrary winds daily, etc., the putting in there was approved for those reasons Persia under date 31 December 1737 From alone, and on that account it was also agreed to have payment made by the Company's brokers to the person upon whom the said bill of exchange was drawn. Also presenting now, verbatim, the submitted written comparison, from which upon reconsideration it has been established to our inward regret that the charges for the year 1736/7, as opposed to the expired year 1735/6, have amounted to ƒ 73703:15:1 2/5 more, the reasons for which are as follows. Increase: 36 8 Decrease: 776 10 10 That which has most contributed to the increase of this last item more than in the year 1736 was caused by the European envoys to Kirman, who, in order to maintain matters in their present state, were by common consent employed separately from the clerks, for which purpose an additional amount had to be expended of f 108:16; a greater number of European servants in Isfahan this year than last, with the surplus to the junior merchant and head amounting to f 34:7; the salary of a junior merchant of Basra and according to the ministers' reasons the wine rations also amounted to more by f 52:4:8; which makes f 255:7:8, whereupon seeking the discrepancy of f 36:8, we find the same in the lesser expenditure at the main office, being less than last year by f 218:19:8; thus the intended f 36:8 appears. Commanding Lord and Honorable Lords In most obedient execution of your Honors' ever-respected order and command by decree of the 7th current, we, the undersigned Commissioners Extraordinary, betook ourselves to the Company's spice warehouse, where the Merchant and Warehouse Master, the Honorable Willem Meester, showed us a quantity of cinnamon which, according to his Honor's attestation, having been crushed and trodden underfoot from time to time during delivery in small parcels as well as otherwise, had become offensive and unacceptable to the merchants; which, since it also appeared so to us, as well as to the brokers who, being asked whether any improvement could still be made to it or whether the same could be cleaned, fully declared that the said bark could no longer withstand any garbling, since it was already sorted-out goods, and by its crumbling or crushing thus unsightly, indeed practically scentless and tasteless; Koenad, Senior Merchant and Director of this Persian Directorate, together with the Council was [illegible] 2063 From Persia under date 31 December 1737 they had also used all obliged circumspection, as well as all humanly possible effort upon the continuous exhortation so often applied, yet notwithstanding this, for the aforementioned reasons, could never promote the sale nor make the same deliverable; therefore, for that reason, we brought the said quantity to the scale in the presence of his Honor mentioned above, and found it to amount to 198 lb net of undeliverable cinnamon. Whereas it is indicated thereby and substantiated with good reason that the crumbling of a parcel of 198 lb of cinnamon is such that the same cannot in any way be made deliverable, and is also practically scentless and tasteless, for which reason it is now resolved to keep the entire quantity of that former aromatic bark in readiness for shipment to Batavia; and although the recently delivered curcuma, likewise ginger, is also of little quality, and it is evident that with these sorts, according to the indications of the samples, their sale can impossibly be held back any longer if one does not wish to suffer seeing the same become unsaleable, and therefore it is judged more advisable to cede the first-mentioned to the aforesaid merchant at 1 1/2 mamoodies or ƒ - 12:12 per 6 lb, and to dispose of the ginger at 2:-:- mamoodies or ƒ - 17 for the same weight, furthermore the brokers shall still be credited and the expense account of the merchandise debited for what they paid to the dresser of the two pieces of blue velvet, amounting to 6 mamoodies or ƒ 2: 11. From Persia, under date 31 December 1737 account of what they have already discovered and confessed, all that which is stated above, the appearers declaring it to contain the pure and sincere truth, giving following reasons of knowledge, and promising to confirm the same on oath if required. Thus done and declared in the Dutch office of Gamron, on the day, month, and year aforesaid, in the presence of the assistants Jan George Schimming and Pieter Roselaar, clerks, as witnesses. Was signed: Wm Nozeman, Hk Bommer, In Martensz, Herms Scholten, Abm Vink, and the mark of Jan Hogeveld in the middle. In the presence of us, signed: Ks Hogeboom, Cjb Fodder. Whereupon, following the proposition of the honorable Commander, it having been judged necessary and consequently resolved to summon to this meeting, as well as to confront with the said writings, those who had provided them; and since each for his part remained persistently unchanged in his position, and the skippers of the vessels Opperdoes and Adriana frankly confessed that according to the tenor of those documents, great difficulty lay enclosed in dispatching the yacht d'Anthonia to the Indian capital; and besides, wishing their bodily constitution permitted them to inspect everything ocularly themselves, etc.; wherefore the aforesaid Commander further made known his true intention to devise jointly in this regard the most salutary expedient that could be thought out and deemed necessary in good conscience for the welfare of the General Company. And although the sentiments of the honorable Abraham van Suchtelen and Wm Meester also included this, for the reason that, as already stated, each of the mates had likewise, upon clear questioning twice over, fully testified that the ship was in a state to undertake the Batavian voyage, since after stopping some leaks, it took no more water at the pump in half an hour's time than about 10 thumbs, the other five members were nonetheless of the contrary opinion, on the grounds that the shipwrights declared they could not reach the leak, but thought that if the said vessel were lightened by 6 feet, only then would they be able to reach it to stop it, at the same time frankly testifying that they could not vouch that the ship would then be sound and undamaged, since some dangerous spots might still appear here or there that had hitherto been concealed from them; and because, during the inspection of that ship, new and dangerous leaks were discovered daily, and the dispatch might thereby have harmful consequences, not to mention the apprehension which both skippers came to express in the case in point; for which reasons each individually voted that this keel ought to be sent to Laaff for repairs prior to its departure, and that what was recorded in the resolution taken on 10 December of the past year would thereby also be complied with.
