From Persia under date 30 April 1738. departure from Mascat withheld, and may possibly cause an army of much greater number than he had to come and assist him at the court, which was already beset with many anxieties. The necessity being present where we, besides that, in the fatal cases of the small vessel d'Anthonia, which lay sufficiently ready to sail to depart with the blue flag just before the closure of our humble letter of the ultimate of April of last year to the Honorable the High Indian Government, saw ourselves plunged into bitter grief at having to detain the same; so that Your Honors will be able to observe from the attached postscript to those most humble letters, this letter therefore going for safety's sake instead of that vessel with the ship Opperdoes, and which we from the bottom of our hearts wish God's holy assistance to the end that it may arrive at Batavia by the speediest manner via Tuticorin; whilst with very humble greetings and equal 218 From Persia under date 30 April 1738. and equal affection as before we remain. We express our gratitude both for the goods sent hither and the promises that the remainder of our demand is to follow by the next occasion, as well as for the communicated copies of missives directed by you under various dates to the Honorable Most Respected Lords Principals in the Fatherland and the Honorable High Indian Government at Batavia; and we wish the said Mr. Carel Koenad much happiness with his promotion to Senior Merchant and Commander of the Persian Directorate, whilst the Governor expresses his particular obligation for the promised willing services toward the maintenance of 2187 From Persia under date 30 April 1738. of mutual correspondence, under promises of not failing on his part in that regard; and with the received invoices, the one totaling f7926:19:10 and the other f19794:18:8, being entered as usual, and also your petition from this Government for the year 1738 having long since been contracted to be fulfilled in good, sound wares as soon as possible. We cannot write off from the salempores mentioned in Your Honor's demand of 30 November 1736 any more than 42 packs or 3360 pieces common bleached, which will remain unforwarded and written off, 40 packs thereof having already been satisfied to Batavia, and we transmit alongside this to Your Honor the copies of our respectful letters sent both to the Fatherland to the Noble, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Directors, and to the Noble High Indian Government at Batavia, dated 27 February, 29 December of the past, 24 June, 15 and 28 September of this year, to which we refer regarding the Company's interests on this coast, adding that the first parcel of asafoetida was sold here on the Coast at 220 pagodas per bhaar of 480 lb, but for the last, which the merchants say is not of as good a quality From Persia, dated 30 April 1738. as the previous one, no more than 120 pagodas per bhaar is now offered at Portonovo, now that the English and French have supplied this Coast with that crop, with which, after cordial greetings, we remain, in the margin: Honorable Sir and special good friends, Your Honor's willing friends and servants, was signed: P. 2197 From Persia, dated 30 April 1738. We received Your Esteemed Honours' original and copy letters of this office dated 8 January, and the first-mentioned under 20 March of the past year, after it had been entered here with respect to the original of the just-mentioned copy. Your Esteemed Honours were informed on 20 July of the same year that 14 days prior we had the honour of receiving the same in duplicate, of which proof was also given by us and our service lastly under the date of 31 December, provided with an appendix of the ultimate of January of this year. Thus we cannot doubt its proper delivery, letting this serve as an accompaniment to the copy of the just-mentioned humble letters, but especially to the copies of our humble letters humbly submitted under 3 February and today to Their High Noble Grand Esteemed, the High Indian Government. For we cannot fail to also thank Your Esteemed Honours very kindly for that dispatch of Their Esteemed Honours dated 19, 20 and 24 February and 3 March, and at the departure of Your Esteemed Honours' last letter, presented to the noble, highly esteemed lords masters in the From Persia, dated 30 April 1738. in the fatherland and the aforementioned Their High Nobilities at Batavia. Mention having been made in our said last letter regarding the table fruits demanded from Isfahan for Your Esteemed Honours' directorate, whereupon in the month of February 100 lb of raisins were received, we indeed attempted to forward the same with some others, but a coincident lack of opportunity made us reflect upon Your Esteemed Honours' request, the more so as those goods could only be sent via Batavia and not directly. For which reason, regarding soft fruits, we excuse ourselves hereby pursuant to the council resolution of the 22nd of this month until a better opportunity presents itself, offering nevertheless 2 small pots of the aforementioned delicacies in the interim. We politely request that we may be provided directly with such linens as listed in our accompanying extract demand, whereby a particular favour will be done to us, and we shall therewith consider all our previous humble petitions fulfilled. For the Lahori and Dheriabadi fabrics, the merchants initially having offered only ms 11 ƒ 4. 13:8, there would have been a loss, but remaining firm on the old prices, the brokers also obtained good hopes in that regard, although they declare the same not to be fully equal in quality to those negotiated previously, wherefore they will first await the bid and then request de novo. Everyone also appears to be affected by the advances of the Persians; it is maintained that Candahar has been captured, and the mighty army has marched towards Kabul. A certain prominent person named Mahomet Chan Turchaman has appeared at Delhi according to the latest reports and is lodged in the royal garden 't Salmhaar, while the Mogul is having everything prepared for that audience, without his having yet paid his compliments, nor has anyone here learned the purpose of his embassy. The Company's Bethlehem having appeared in the roads from the Indian capital solely for this directorship, had already departed with the Cachims yacht Anna Catharina when we received Your Honours' aforesaid missive, so that the requested forwarding by us to Their Right Honourables, the Lords of the High Indian Government, could not be carried out. Meanwhile we would not have failed to let Your Honour receive the requested pepper with one of our sloops, in case we had been provided with it at the time of the receipt of Your Honour's agreeable letters; however we did not fail properly to present Your Honour's embarrassment regarding this commodity to their High Excellencies, who have been pleased to write to us that one should send to Your Honour 33 lb of pepper with the ships Opperdoes and Adriana if the same could take place without prejudice to the Galle stock, which being judged impossible by us, it was resolved at the session of the 5th of this month, after consideration of what was necessary, to have 200000 lb of pepper shipped in Opperdoes for Your Honour's directorate, just as the same then also 222 From Persia under date 30 April 1738 has taken effect, in the hope that it may be delivered with less loss than that of which mention was made hereinbefore. There have also been left in Opperdoes 4 leaguers of arrack out of a lot of 75 ditto brought for this Commandment, at the choice of the ship's officers, which had previously been removed from the Adriana because the little keel was so hindered thereby that it could not well use its guns, besides that one was also very embarrassed here for that liquid. And whereas by the skipper of the said vessel, in the name of Herbert Sam, as having frequented this coast for a long time, we are assured that from Your Honour's place of residence to Cochin overland with patamars or coolies some baggage packs up to about 110 lb weight each could indeed be sent, we thus request not only in this matter, but also in everything that accompanies this said government of Ceylon, likewise Coromandel and the Commandery of Malabar respectively, Your Honour's assistance, by which we shall oblige ourselves to all possible return services. The English Consul Mr. Marten French and his clerk Mr. Kenni are counted among them, so that that English house died out, but was taken possession of again by one Mr. Dorril, who arrived from Baghdad for that purpose and also to take care of the affairs of that nation here. And the French houses, or that of Monsieur La Rievierre, have also become vacant through death, and its settlement, together with that of the deceased supercargo Monsieur Aumont, has been referred to the well-known Doctor Du Fresne, so that most Europeans on the spot have disappeared. We, thank God, are still among the living, though very poorly provided with health and strength. The small garden mentioned previously is for the present still our refuge, and is, besides the grace of Heaven, our only preservation of life. The city is mostly empty, trade stands still, and we only pray God for a merciful recovery and deliverance from the present miserable condition. From a small letter received via tranhi from Bushehr, it has appeared to our particular pleasure that trade there succeeded fairly well, so that we observed with joy that our former anxieties in that regard have yet turned out for the best. Persia under date 30 April 1738 There is presently no greater prospect for the sale than previously reported, so we shall await Your Honors' most respected orders regarding this; however, as the first-mentioned quantity is not very considerable and still good enough to give away as presents, we shall leave that aromatic bark as it lies, until further orders, so that through sorting and sifting the Honorable Company may suffer no loss thereon. We have the honor to assure Your Honors that it would be a good thing for the Honorable Company if it were observed that the customs duties paid on unsaleable goods upon return could be settled against those newly brought in. However, we have at the same time the fortune to add that this, in our humble opinion, may well be considered a fruitless endeavor, since the constant changing of the Basra pashas, or lesser governors, entirely conflicts with this. For Your Honors need only suppose that a pasha who governs locally this year, having pocketed the customs money and further duties, is subsequently ousted from his office and has fled the city; there is not the slightest recovery or restitution to be expected from him, much less that a newly arrived one would be willing to miss out on already paid customs money from his competent rights. That is one point; secondly, it has already been demonstrated during the encounter with Husjen Pasha to what extent the edicts of one pasha are respected by another. Thus, with much respect, we might well estimate that if, according to Your Honors' wise intention, we were to solicit such a prerogative, it could perhaps be obtained for an acceptable present, but for no longer duration than that such a pasha himself might remain governing locally. Consequently, once the present was delivered and the government changed, the edict would be of no value and the expense without the slightest effect. Nevertheless, should Your Honors be pleased to honor us in this case with your destined orders, we are prepared to obey them dutifully. We were very glad to learn that the cash and effects remitted per Anthonia corresponded well with the accompanying invoice, and hope in the future always to be able to provide Your Honors with that same satisfaction. We also thank Your Honors quite respectfully for the good care taken in sending our humble writings to Batavia, constantly hoping to obtain a gracious decision from their High Nobilities on the matter. The state of trade locally is as if it, like most merchants, had been struck by the past plague, for neither the one nor the other seems to have drawn breath to this day; and it is not yet worth the trouble to give an account of what has been turned over since the departure of the Anthonia. However, this would have been done accurately and herewith, were it not that the bearer of this just arrived with sudden notice, as they say, warning us that on his hasty departure he was to call at Gamron in passing; wherefore we beg pardon for this, and trust that we shall not neglect the next opportunity dutifully to mention the necessary matters concerning this and more. Our daily journal kept since the last dispatch, or from primo November to ultimo March of the current year, is enclosed herewith for consideration, along with 5 copies of specifications for the months of November and December of the past year, as well as January, February, and March of this year, totaling mt 3556 or f 1511: 6, which we quite reverently request may kindly be passed according to the custom used therein. But now this has been effected with some increase, as Your Honor will be able to see from the accompanying modest letter dated the end of April last, presented with all respect to Their High Excellencies, the High Indian Government. And since the authorities, upon the receipt of some canassers, have expressed their apprehensions regarding their poor condition caused by the long delay and the transshipment, being subject to large shortweights, it has been judged unanimously good to use good mat bags instead of them in order to prevent damages. Of the incoming spelter and Tuticorin Guinea cloth, the said authorities have been given separate samples of each, in order to test the market with them before their unloading, or else whether it might be more advisable to return one and the other via Bushehr; although we have a much better opinion of the said mineral than of the mentioned cloths, of which, however, with the Cattatese sort and all the other merchandise, we shall hope to hear of a desirable turnover. At the said place, of the Cattatese cloths, only 1 piece has been sold so far, with an advance of 76 per cent, and the Honorable Schoonderwoert gives good prospects for those remaining there, so that we also still have to await their sale in order to perceive what advance may in time be obtained on them; otherwise going fairly well, though not precisely in all respects as profitable as we had jointly assumed before concerning that enterprise.
