Written in the month of Rajab-ul-Murajjab in the year 1151, corresponding as stated in the heading. Thus, according to the statement of the Company's Persian writer Camberalie, translated from the Persian into the Dutch language by me /was signed: C.r Clement. And whereas the disposition of the Beglerbegi, together with his favorable offer of service, is fully evident from the brief contents of this letter, and the Lord Director has already been informed by Mirza Abol Hassan of the departure of a chappar in 5 days, His Honor therefore asked the gentleman members whether, besides the notification already made concerning the restitution of the 17000 From Persia, dated 25 Febru: 1759 17000 tomans court debt, they could bring forward any other matters worthy of note to request anew from that Khan. An end of a seam on the side against the transom, at the depth of 14½ feet, 3 inches open. A butt in the garboard strake 32 feet before the sternpost, the oakum entirely rotten and open. NB: the garboard strake in various places gnawed by the worms, which has been cut out, and pieces inserted half-timber therein. And whereas the Honorable Authority further asked in the consultation whether one judged it necessary, or at least useful, that a small present should be added for the local Regent Molla Hassis, seeing that by this expedient, through correspondence, in reply the necessary and currently missing attestation from him could simultaneously be obtained, and moreover the friendship of the Regents could be enjoyed again in time and circumstance; thus this proposal was indeed taken into consideration, yet no formal decision was reached in that regard, because it seemed a mystery whether that leopard would ever want to mention anything according to the truth in his written testimony in our favor regarding the construction of the dike, in which this supposition was supported not a little because he retired elsewhere when he saw the dike almost completed, having in all likelihood seized upon this means because he was not inclined to take it over from us, nor to grant an attestation regarding its construction; while in the meantime Rostambeecq, holding the office of Castle Warden due to the absence of Molla Hassis and otherwise being daily present, played the rogue as well and absented himself, merely to remain free from all claims; wherefore, upon consideration, it was also resolved to have the Company's interpreter David Sahid confer with the naib here, Miersa abol hassan, regarding this important point, and to bring matters so far that the dike may be impartially inspected by his order, and that we may be secured by a written certificate, in order later, if necessary, to be able to counter all unreasonable pretexts and claims of this godless race of people in a legal and emphatic manner; for the attainment of which the aforementioned interpreter waited upon Miersa abol hassan while this was still being drafted, and reported shortly thereafter that he had spoken to that gentleman about the construction of the dike and what pertains to it, and had knocked for an attestation in that regard, with the friendly request to have the state of these matters inspected by two sensible persons together, but of impartiality, and thus to reassure us; but that he had received in reply that he stands by our word, and made no difficulty at all in believing it, therefore no attestation or further investigation was needed, provided he gave full assurance of his inclination and satisfaction; whereupon it was now further submitted to the members for consideration by the aforementioned Honorable Authority whether both small vessels currently lying at the roadstead, combined, or just one alone, with the books of this Directorate of the year 1737/8, item the assorted goods that have long been lying here in storage and run the risk of spoilage with a longer stay, along with other returns, cash, and otherwise brought from Cassoura and Boucheer, ought not rather to be dispatched as soon as possible, or whether these vessels should still be held until such time as the full satisfaction of the respective demands could follow, while the Isfahan caravan according to received reports thereof dated 9 October of the past year must soon appear, and according to later office advice the caravans with the asafoetida are likewise on the way; therefore, the one and the other having been broadly considered, it was approved to summon the principal skipper Claas Hoogeboom during this meeting, and to hear his sentiment on the point of the dispatch of the Anthonia; but since he, having appeared, declared by word of mouth to be in a condition to be able to depart for Malabar, although he had previously complained bitterly by word of mouth about the bad condition of his standing and running rigging, indeed even giving notice of his embarrassment by a note and written demand for such necessities (see report dated 2 April and request of 30 April of the past year, of which the first has already been sent per Ritthem, and what is mentioned beside it was also requested for that purpose from Batavia and, after date in case of inconvenience from that capital, already from Cochin), our thoughts have gone further than that man's words in that regard; and having beforehand asked the opinion of the Master of Equipage Jan Martensz, which also implied being able to reach Malabar, it was consequently concluded, upon the declaration made by the bold seaman, to have the sail and hull of his vessel inspected by specially appointed commissioners, and at the same time to have the remaining stock of equipage goods exactly inventoried, to which end skipper Gerritz and the aforementioned Jan Martens were then nominated, who, according to the convenience of time, shall go aboard and will have to carry out what their post entails in this matter.

From Persia dated 25 February 1739. Whether they could be strengthened with positive orders in that regard, or not, whereupon the general opinion was that they, being able to view and know matters from up close, how they had already arranged themselves or were yet to be arranged, should carefully consider everything themselves and place it all in an orderly and economical manner, in such a way that the Company is preserved from damage and insults, and at the same time compliance is made with courtly courtesy in that highly necessary ceremony toward His Royal Highness, and the gifts were regulated in such manner as the Isfahan Residents think they will be able to justify before Their High Nobilities. Concerning two declarations sent from there, one regarding 13 pieces of unappraised effects which are acknowledged as ruined, and the other regarding the condition of 2 silver bridles past, but proving nothing at all because the deficit or loss on the 13 pieces of No. 17 and 46, 8 in total, is not mentioned or verified therein, which constituted the most essential part of our objective. See the letter dispatched thither under date of 11 November last year. Consequently, the ministers are to be ordered to effect henceforward an exact inventory of all silverworks remaining there, twice or at least once, according to ancient custom and strict order, showing the reduction and the true loss of each sort by an adequate report, and presently to weigh properly the remaining 224 and 174 silver pieces, and to send them, together with the 2 bridles (with permission, however, to purchase a new silver bridle in their stead), to us at the first opportunity, and along with this to provide more plausible and surely, if possible, more satisfactory reasons than appear to have been given so far as to how the reduction in the number of those pieces and the unfitness of those bridles were actually caused. Furthermore, the runner Mulla Muhammad will have his premium of 80 Mahmudis validated and paid out to him by the purveyor, but the Residents will be advised to not grant such premiums in the future except in cases of utter necessity, in order thereby to comply with the so highly recommended economy. Pursuant to what was noted in the Resolution of 18 November and the sample shown from on board, the Bushire wheat was found mixed with some dust and much barley, nor was it properly poured into mat sacks; likewise, no sample sack was handed to the ship's officers, nor was the interrogation regarding the receipt of the cargo accomplished. Thus it is well to be thought that one thing and another were forgotten and neglected due to haste. Consequently, one will be obliged to order the commissioner to halt the purchase of the aforesaid product, which has now risen again in price but not in quality, until better times and further orders. Furthermore, with regard to this grain, the skipper Gerritsz with the mate Jan Hendriks were summoned once more to the meeting, and after appearing were asked whether they really received the wheat for the account of the Honorable Company from Schoonderwoerd in the condition shown by the sample, and why they had not filed their objections against it over there. Whereupon they replied that they received everything as indicated, and had also spoken the truth according to the outward appearances over there, remaining prepared, upon a further interrogation, to confirm the attested facts, if necessary, under oath. Which calm offer was then considered sufficient, and the matter being left as it is, it was further resolved to deduct 2000 lb from the 5400 lb bulk lapis tutia stored there in satisfaction for Coromandel, and to retain the remaining 3400 lb here until the arrival of the Batavia ships expected, and while awaiting the respective demands, to see how the cat jumps, just as one must also bear with patience, after reflection upon the commissioner's demand (see letter of the 12th instant), until Bushire is restored and it will be possible to accommodate him, so that one will then indeed send him the 9 requested weights of 50 lb each at the first opportunity, and inspect the 2 forgotten specifications of the months of November and December last, amounting in total to Mahmudis 1131 at 57 guilders, 3 stivers, 8 penningen upon receipt, and will meanwhile disburse to the runner Ahmad Kocherdig his premium of 25 Mahmudis. Notwithstanding the urgent request of Mirza Abu Hassan for the loan of a ship to Congo, under a precious assurance made up to three times that it would be unloaded there and not required to go any further, is now fulfilled, and Antonia has already arrived there, one must nevertheless now, God mend it, hear the contrary thereof, seeing that he, Mirza, now pretends Congo is already provisioned by the importation with small craft from other places, and thus there are no more provisions needed there, but rather that Julfar was in high need, where the King's troops, if not speedily relieved, would collectively perish from hunger, and we, upon refusal of this short trip, would notoriously have to bear the guilt and responsibility for the ruin of so many people before His Majesty, as further appears from the below insertion.
