501 From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 will please to confirm. Thus done, resolved, and decreed in the Netherlands Office at Gamron, on the day, month, and year as in the heading. Resolution taken in the Political Council at Gamron, Monday the 16th of February, Anno 1739. Whereas, among other matters, the principal object of this business was the pending sordid affair and the expulsion from the service of the Honorable Company of the former Basra broker Moeltjent, the Honorable Director made known to the Council, before proceeding to other particulars, how he had persistently and amicably worked on the matter with the local Governors and had now finally brought it so far that, after having been reassured by a complete guarantee obtained on the 13th instant, In the From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 he could foresee no further difficulty in dispatching that scoundrel. Therefore, he deemed it most advisable to put the same into effect now. But 505 From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 But since it was given for consideration how the request was arranged according to the number of crew, and the Anthonia as well as the maritime service ashore were short of crew, yet some could still be spared from the Adriana, it has therefore been approved and agreed first to relieve 10 persons from its crew, namely: 6 European sailors, and 4 Bugis soldiers, and then, although the officers were still provisioned until the end of this month, to grant the requested items in reduced quantity, or so much for the undertaking of the upcoming voyage as will, according to our calculation, be amply sufficient to reach Cochin, at which time they must submit a petition for further needs and expect their accommodation there, since we are genuinely not able to procure otherwise, because our very small stock on hand gives us reason to fear being left destitute, and of occasionally being subjected to the peril of domestic embarrassment, given the extraordinary high prices.

From Persia under date 25 Febru: 1739 The dearness and scarcity of the necessary provisions indeed forbid us and cause precaution to be used in pushing through the purchase of the same at excessively high prices. The purchase of horses as well as their harnesses being necessary here for maintaining the Company's dignity, we, in view thereof and what was resolved on 29 Jannu: last, yesterday obtained the opportunity to purchase a fine grey horse aged about 6 years, after the same was previously honestly appraised by our stable master bandalie as a good connoisseur of riding animals, and also paid for with a sum of M:s 1459 or f 620: 1. 8, but the amount found or lifted from the savings pot here amounts to m. s 227:—:— or f 96: 9: 8, regarding which we, in our humble details to be sent, will most humbly request Their High Noble Right Honorable Lordships to allow the disbursement of these monies to take place for the benefit of the diaconate poor, consisting of such coinage as is recorded in the report presented by the provisional fiscal and the specially appointed commissioners in this regard, reading as follows: To the Right Honorable Carel Coenad, Senior Merchant and Commander of this Persian Directorate and its jurisdiction, together with the Honorable Council. 513. 573 From Persia under date 25 February 1739. from Bushehr to our regret have been brought back, because those cloths did not find buyers in these quarters and in Lar matters stand similarly as through dispatched letters per Opperdoes we have dutifully communicated to Your Right Honourable, and for which reason we remain longing very much for better success. Regarding the requested horses, according to reports a fine beast has been obtained at the aforementioned place, as they were not able to obtain more, the same will be forwarded here per the Anthonia as soon as it shall be reinforced from Batavia with the highly needed equipment goods, the horse having already been summoned to that end. Furthermore, all the necessities that were still lacking from Your Right Honourable respected requisitions of 21 August and 13 November 1737 are ready for shipment in sound quality, but the Isfahan servants have not yet been able to procure the 100 pieces of Japanese robes, and regarding which, having replied to their letters of 26 December on the last day of January and passed, we have recommended the procurement thereof anew, which we trust will meet Your Right Honourable's approval. Since the Company's brokers have requested so strongly to be allowed to obtain anew 200 bales of cinnamon of such a quality as Your Right Honourable's courtesy accommodated us with per Opperdoes, under the assurance that even if it were once From Persia under date 25 February 1739 as much, it could easily be brought to the market. For which reason we humbly request Your Right Honourable in this letter to be allowed to obtain the first-mentioned quantity for the years 1739 and 1740 at the first opportunity. It would also be a desired matter, based on the good hope given by the brokers, to ship off the 300 bales requested under dates 22 April and 9 August of the past year upon the arrival of the ship in the course of the dispatch of that current year, as there is nothing left at the Island. Furthermore, we take the liberty in this to offer for the respected consideration of Your Right Honourable 2 translated letters, in which it will be visible what precautions the Persian monarch has taken and what progress he has already made against the Mughal troops, to which we respectfully hold ourselves. And should it happen that the richly laden ship Loenderveer, esteemed lost—of which we nevertheless hope in time to hear the best—has not appeared, and thereby some scarcity has been caused in cash funds for the general management of the important linen trade, or should there be a shortfall in other significant interests, we take the liberty by this document to leave entirely to your honors the 7,400 pieces of Chassas Jangernaarpourse promised to us and known among others by the frequently cited triplicate order, whenever a fourth part of that parcel might be needed to satisfy other respective demands, since for the time being we could well manage with the remaining 5,550 pieces, notwithstanding that the brokers testify in truth that the sort and such as your honors have been pleased successively to provide us with, along with several other merchandises, is very well received by every merchant, in fact more sought after than those brought by other nations for your honors in particular. The principal news of this empire consists in the still continuing war fortune of His Majesty, it being presently said that he is encamped around Jalaqpur, a few days' journey above Kabul, and is intending to demand a large sum of money from the Hindustani monarch. Others maintain that he was about to penetrate toward Lahore, which, leaving to time for discovery, was nevertheless according to all appearances much more desirable than that he were so far from home, putting the empire, principally the lower lands, together with us, in the greatest danger, while no great interregnum could possibly be experienced if something human should happen to him during this time. The beglerbegi of Fars, Mahomet Takki Chan, has lost almost all his troops, ships, and vessels against the Arabs, along with all the conquered lands except Zulphaar, as well as Bahrain. Regarding the trade, the realm, and the further plan of the Netherlandish enterprise against the Muscatters by the notorious but at the same time godless beglerbegi Muhammad Taqi Khan, everything having been reviewed in the accompanying copy of our humble, modest detailed report to Their High Noble, Gallant, Great Worships, the High Indian Government, we take the liberty, for the sake of brevity, to refer very humbly thereto, communicating only regarding the trade concerning Your Honors herewith that 5 pieces of fine Cassate linen fabrics, designated as 11 feet, at Boucher, according to the return from there, have gained 47½ per cent, but not 70 [illegible] as was recently assigned; and ginger here on the books at 27½ schellingen, together with the [illegible] turmeric as stated 23 1/8 per cent, but on the net return both assortments yield a small loss, so that it is found therein, we express our regret regarding the said linen, since the same, both at Bassoura and at the cited Boucher, do not seem to want to sell on account of the prices for which they must be sold to make a profit. Furthermore, we present 2 translations from this new Persian Monarch to the Hindustani regions concerning his, and to his great [illegible] causes of the curious conception of his reflection, as it were palavering on all sides to maintain and push through something, before which at least our small intellect has hesitated more than once; may God the Lord preserve those who are in those regions and here, is now our heartfelt wish. For the rest, we do not doubt that regarding the 3 packets sent hither, being one for the Fatherland, one for Jerusalem, and the third for Nieuwe, a satisfactory answer of their receipt will soon arrive, as according to evidence from Boucher dated 14 June of the past year they were forwarded from Bassoura to their most worthy recipients with good opportunity. Concerning the seven persons named in the instructions to the ship's officers under today's date and the extract of the session held on the 16th of this month, in order to effect a radical obliteration both in cash of the difficulties for that Pythagorean and to settle all other important consequences regarding the creditors of the lords and masters in these parts, as well as if feasible by this dispatch of those seven Banians to avoid all further extensive investigation, and if possible to overturn the grievances raised for the present not without reason; their complete books remain in our custody, and they have been provisioned for the voyage. But since they, by their laborious nature on solid grounds, will have to subsist without the enjoyment of anything, we do not doubt, moreover, that they will exert themselves to become worthy of Your Honours' merciful protection, in the manner that the Basra ministers' accompanying extract letter of 28 October 1735 provides us with the foundation to rectify in this matter. And to conclude this affair, we kindly request Your Honours favorably to accommodate our compelled action in troubling Your Honours with this, for in this abominable Moorish country one cannot act as one wishes or ought to act. We also do not doubt that the English and French gentlemen will have spread sufficient news of the fatal state of affairs here, and that the regime in general is becoming more and more unbearable for every person. In reply serves our taken pleasure regarding the accomplished presentation of the High Noble, Right Honourable Lord Adriaan Valckenier as Governor-General of the Netherlands Indies and our highly praised Supreme Commander, as well as that on that great day the habit d'honneur was given to the Interpreter Elias Sahid for his fame and honour in particular, and thus the joint servants over there will assure us with a promise of fidelity made under oath, while at the same time awaiting the cost of the robe of honour according to Your Honour's written advice.
