Whereas the couriers Mhamet Eetne Resae arrived on the 27th of that month with your advices of 9 October, together with the first set of annexes, except the price current, which was forgotten and yet had been very necessary, and the same having been reviewed in council on the 5th of this month, we shall, before proceeding to answer, solely mention that it was pleasing to us to see the proper delivery of our letters dated 6 and 24 August, as well as mid-September, forwarded earlier, of which only the accompanying copy of the writing of the 23rd of the last-mentioned month for your information could still be of service, to which we refer ourselves, while making known that the writings exchanged by you with the ministers at Basra and Bandar-e Bushehr have been properly sent to us. However, whenever you report back here on such correspondence, it must never be forgotten, according to custom, to incorporate at least the dates of the letters into your report at the same time, as this will not add to the length, but will attribute much accuracy to any detail to be made, as stated. However, how your situation, as reported on 6 October last to Basra, will be received, we shall rather leave to time and to the expected advices from the head there, the Honorable George Gutchie, to reveal, than to act prematurely in this matter, since that may have no other result than what serves the purpose. Nevertheless, we recommend that you communicate without delay, through a concise correspondence, both to us and to the said regions, using good courier opportunities, the most noteworthy news of the realm to which some degree of credence can be given, together with whatever you shall deem to belong to the interest of the Honorable masters in these dangerous and so damaging times. Proceeding to further reply regarding your recently made requests, we state that the received salary and board to the amount of 638 mahmudis, or ƒ271. 3.-, have been debited here to your surety. The findings, with the related sworn declaration corroborated under dates of 20 December of the past year and the last day of August recently passed, seen under No. 2 in the journal and once more carefully examined as of the date thereof with the reasons given therein, the shortages in kind according to each dictate concerning spices and other merchandise are hereby validated. And regarding the attested certificate submitted today under date of 1 September last, to which reference is made in the said findings, we have, on the assumption that the indicated household furniture was broken by accident, as is said to be the case with breakable goods, after due consideration, also permitted the write-off in the said meeting. And regarding the 5 pieces of unappraised goods mentioned therein, we authorize you to purchase: 1 piece new leather bridle in place of the green shagreen ditto, in order to be able to write off, along with 4 leather water bottles, with 1 bucket, because they are said to be completely deteriorated; provided that when disposing of them, this must be kept in mind and a declaration thereof sent to us. And in respect of the items also noted there: 3 pieces mafrash saddles, and 6 pieces or 3 pairs of mafrashes, you are again ordered to have them repaired and preserved for the Company's service somewhat better than appears to have been done by those who are responsible for it, since we are still of the opinion that, if not all 6 pieces, at least some of them all will be worth the repair cost and will be of use in time, as we have just touched upon. We further permit, upon your made request, that the horse bridles mentioned by letter and recently sent separately, silver pieces, may be newly resewn, but those which are still noted in the repeatedly mentioned findings, namely: 1 piece weighing 274 7/8 mithqals and counting 237 pesos, 1 piece weighing 220 mithqals and counting 80.- pesos, must be sent here with written proof concerning their reduced pesos and how their unfit condition came about, conscientiously as they are, upon receipt of this, that is, at the first caravan opportunity, especially when they are not needed there. From Persia under date 25 February 1739 Although proper procedure would have dictated that it be entered on the mentioned day and not under the ultimate of August and that license for write-off should have been requested, that amount of ƒ289. 19. — is also approved. But regarding what is indicated there from page 32 to 34 to an amount of ƒ473. 10. 7, namely ƒ1135. 15. 3 in expenses for gifted spices and other merchandise, we could not decide otherwise, as your reasons will appear in due time by Extract Resolution and will shortly show, than that one does indeed find oneself obliged to cultivate the friendship of the Persian court grandees with the respect due to our Right Honourable supreme masters by means of a modest present, but not that the latter may include a mixture with the principal and second, as we have given you sufficiently to understand on behalf of Mr. Pieter Brand, that the obliged high esteem must be held more delicately than had already appeared to us, so that, in order not to err ourselves, it was found necessary to validate the same subject to the gracious approval of their said Right Honours. In respect of the greater and lesser expenses upon obtaining the comparison of the two most recently expired book years 1734/5 and 1737/8, you are informed that the reasons which were given in the letter concerning the lower amount of the last-mentioned year to ƒ27891:16:2 1/5 have been compared and considered with attention. 594. From Persia under date 25 February 1739 Considered that the principal factor that will have contributed here is the absence of the court, on which account we had flattered ourselves all the more to find the said sum much greater to compensate for the unbearable burdens that everywhere in these regions fall to the lot of our noble paymasters year after year to our deep sorrow, on which account we once again recommend to Your Honour hereby to observe the management of expenses with all candour, as well as to take care according to possibility that the burdens become comparable to former good times and thus temporarily reduced again, in which trust of a dutiful observance we hereby grant our approval to Your Honour's request in the case subject, with an admonition, however, to proceed in the future somewhat more clearly than was done with the entry of forage in the aforementioned comparison. Furthermore, concerning the trade carried on by Your Honour according to the received return and that which is still to be said regarding the books, we have also examined both, the latter agreeing with ours, notwithstanding they were poorly kept in the entry of benzoin, the origin of which is that Your Honour in the journal page 32, according to the annexed declaration passed under date 29 May of this year and known under No. 2, From Persia under date 25 February 1739 No. 2 final write-off that on the profit and loss account of two conflicting matters, although it belongs to that account, for when the declaration is now held against the ledger page 12 and thus back and forth, Your Honour will see that mistake yourself. We therefore only have to point out that it was committed by the lower yield upon sale compared to the cost not being entered or suspended on the return when it was formed, as it pertains to trade goods proceeding in accordance with style and ancient orders. Therefore, the loss of ƒ1- 10 7/5 ought to have been charged to the said account only in its proper time as stated, in which case everything would naturally have balanced more clearly across different entries and times. We therefore send herewith some returns in order not to be at a loss in the future, and also that we may all the more hope with respect to their prices that Your Honour may take measures accordingly, since the Honourable Company cannot suffice with such a poor residual purchase price that conflicts with orders, as among others candy sugar and Javanese cardamom have shown, especially when considering what a Moorish merchant on the contrary is subject to in considerable burdens of current duties here, roadstead dues along the way and the last duty upon arrival there. And yet nevertheless showing himself eager enough to lay hold of the brownest sugar, if one had dared to turn over any of it to him on credit. But since Your Honour shows to have done such once again under date 27 July according to what is shown in the journal on page 49 and aforementioned findings to an amount of m:s 17887 ƒ7601. 19. 8, the risk and accountability thereof remain for all mercantile means and industry through a better, more justifiable trade to make up for the suffered losses, in order to gain honour and to prevent own damage. There are also attached hereto all necessary extracts to the said returns in order to have everything concerning the spices concisely together, even though their prices are known there in abundance. Concerning what was communicated about the carpets and crack almonds, Your Honour is informed that we live in firm confidence that those and other requested small goods will have already been dispatched before the arrival of this letter, with the reports belonging thereto, in order to be available in time for dispatch by ships. We are all the more of that good opinion that Your Honour, upon the departure of the latest advices, will already have been at work to track down the drove of Kerman goats.

On the 23rd of the same month, and the following day, the viceroy departed satisfied from the Company's garden with a letter for His Majesty, of which a translated copy accompanies this for reassurance regarding the Company's status in this realm. Regarding His Majesty, one believes nothing especially different from what your honors yourselves have reported, and therefore your honors should remain mindful, if anything remarkable occurs concerning the realm, to inform us of it at once in the best manner, as we have previously ordered. In due time we also await the promised pacts between this monarch and the Russians, with your honors' promise that whenever any news is learned here that is true, we shall attempt to reciprocate, the Anthonia not yet being repaired, and your honors' notification thereof having received our approval. We have dispatched about this, for we see that, besides the realm being in such a precarious state, one can hardly make any accurate calculation as to whether it will remain standing or overturn once again, since this makes an impression on His Majesty the King's son, Prince Resa Coelie Miersa, sub titulo welliad, alias viceroy, causing his election to suspect that the new Shah, upon returning from the Banyan caravanserai named Hindustan by him, might begin himself to feel dubium, as his ancestors also experienced in ancient times. However, his objective may nonetheless have been commenced with a good intention and also followed by fortunate outcomes, as it is preserved from the past that whoever does not attack unskilfully, or upon victories uses a lively horse to overtake the enemy that has been put to flight, contenting himself with holding the field and honour, is noble-minded, and a warrior who observes such things is to be praised. But since the enclosed news and that which is learned here implies that everyone may well be on their guard, take care, as affectionate servants, to the utmost of your ability in all cases and times, also concerning that which is entrusted to you and for the preservation of your persons, as conscience demands, this being an ancient rule that moves us for reasons to repeat the same. And we sincerely wish that it will not need to be investigated or experienced again through an interregnum. We shall furthermore look forward to the most remarkable news from you in answer to this, and we add here that we long very much for the goods requested pro dato, since we have expected them for a long time. Concerning the Arab war, we have nothing else to report other than that the Persian troops, 3000 men under the command of one Asjoer Sulthoen, are still staying at Zulphaar near Chircum, whither the Company's fleet, or so-called naval force, is also said to have departed in order to prevent the aforementioned cargo there. But that this nation has considerably weakened in strength since the year 1717 is fully evident, for otherwise the Persians would long ago have had to lose their entire force by land and sea. From Persia under date 25 February 1739 to make him quicker and to follow the example of other couriers who usually complete that journey with ease in 12 to 14 days, though postponing that correction until his arrival yonder and deferring it to your Honor's discretion, we desist therefrom to proceed with answering the aforementioned, namely that the ordinary bill of exchange from here to Smyrna has essentially been abolished for a long time already; nevertheless, we have found a reliable, well-to-do Greek merchant who, in order to do us a service, has undertaken to draw a bill of exchange directly on Constantinople, of precisely as much value as we would remit to him locally, that is to say money for money without paying any interest on either side, and without us being subject to any risk of loss, it being well understood that the bill of exchange, having been drawn on his proxy in Constantinople, would be paid within a few days after sight in Smyrna to the Honorable Consul Daniel Baron de Hochepied or his Honor's order; wherefore your Honors please now be mindful of this proposition, and whether the same be acceptable yonder or not. Your Honour's agreeable letter of 29 December of the past year was duly delivered by 1 February, thanking Your Honour very kindly for the various matters communicated therein. Meanwhile, I have the honour to inform Your Honour again that the trade here has succeeded reasonably well, principally regarding the pound goods, of which nothing has remained in stock, on account of which the Honourable Lord Commander and Council at Gamron, upon my petition for fresh wares, have also thought fit to dispatch to us again the well-known vessel the buggalow with merchant [illegible] on 17 March last, the same having arrived here in good condition on the 30th thereof, and on the following 21 April, laden with old copper works and copper money to the amount according to the invoice of f 9689. 7: 8, departed thither again. I hope it will have made a safe voyage, and that the Honourable Lord Commander and Council will take no displeasure in that small return, while the newly arrived goods are also to be disposed of in part one of these days, wishing that the trade over there will also have obtained a desired conclusion, so that things may once again go somewhat better with the Honourable Company in this region, as in former times, which truly begins to be high time, so that the Honourable Company may once again be reimbursed for its heavy losses and expenses suffered; and for which we are most earnestly praying for God's salvation and merciful blessing. The principal news from this quarter consists solely of this, that the present ruler of these countries has reportedly captured the fortress of Chandahaar, the victory for which has been fired here, and whose letter of command was published, tending among other things that the communities would no longer be burdened with extraordinary contributions, nor even with the customary victory coins, nor be required to incur unnecessary expenses for illumination in respect of the victory; all of which is a good thing if His Majesty will persist therein, which is greatly to be wished, so that the oppressed merchant and subject might once again draw some breath. Regarding Muskat, one hears nothing certain, but what one learns thereof are all bad rumours on the Persian side, and God grant in that regard what is best, and take the Company's welfare and its faithful servants into holy keeping, and change these troubles into somewhat quieter times. The bearer of this is named Nasir; he has received half of his agreed wages, or 50 black mahmudis, here. From Persia under date 25 Februarij 1739 The last time that we had the honor to write to your Honors was the 18 7ber of the current year by the local courier named pogos and since we do not doubt its good delivery the sending of a duplicate is hereby excused. But whereas I promised therein to further communicate my departure or stay at this place, this now serves as a humble notification that here, by God's merciful goodness, one needs not be fearful of any previously expressed difficulties, and in my judgment it is so far still quite as quiet here as elsewhere. From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 Overbouger under [illegible] the full Christiaan de Haan Second Resident, as well as Willem Slaars, bookkeeper and warehouse master there Honorable, discreet [friends] Because today an express courier is being dispatched to Bandar Rig and Bushehr with our advices, and we thereby presume to find an opportunity to help these reach a good delivery, since many vessel opportunities occur there, we have, in that good hope, attached hereto the continuation of our humble letters, with attached appendix, passed on 4 June last, to their High Noble Gestrenge Grand Venerables at Batavia, dispatched in all humility per the ship Opperdoes. And when Your Honors annex the same to that which we sent on 30 May with the yacht de Adriana, this makes up the entire minor detail to which we, as well as the just mentioned advice, refer in this matter. We mention that because the packet of papers sent by the overland route would attract too much attention in the event of unexpected attacks by some thief between here and Bushehr, the addition of the duplicate of our last letter, just mentioned, would run more danger of being broken open, torn, etc. This is currently the reason that such is omitted, and we all the more wish to learn in due time of its safe arrival, which God grant. Meanwhile, it serves as information that currently we have made some mention to the Junior Merchant and Commission Agent, the Honorable Jacob van Schoonderwoert, regarding the gunpowder, tutenag, and Guinees, coarse, left behind, that in case of returning them, which however we hope will not have to happen, and whenever he saw an opportunity for good sales, he might have those goods unloaded. It will nevertheless still be useful that Your Honors proceed with the same as we said recently. Concerning the state of trade and the lower realm here, we must inform Your Honors that it is beginning to look quite poor again, for no sooner had the locusts left us due to lack of further food in the fields and trees, than a royal mandate was published that European and Moorish ducats, without the least dispute, must pass at 18 Mahmudis heavy silver money, evaluated at 50 per cent in black Mahmudis copper, 27, and at 75 per cent in copper pice to 31½. This makes the Company's white 25 1/5 Mahmudis, 5, ƒ 10:14:3 1/5, and the said 27 Mahmudis copper out to ƒ 9: 39 3/5 or 21 3/5 Mahmudis, as the pice circulating are 25 per cent among the merchant with merchandise in the course of time, so that Your Honors will easily be able to gauge how everyone is brought into straits by this, and it appears clearly enough that the King wants no money, but rather goods to be exported from the country. The Muscat affair does not seem to be succeeding well for the Beglerbegi Muhammad Taqi Khan, since everyone comes forth to state almost with one voice that he has lost half of his troops, and our good friend Latif Khan is said to have been lost in attacks. The former is to be picked up from Julfar with the King's fleet and an English ship, but it is not known where he is to land and what he will begin. From Persia under date 25 February 1739. Considering the reasons and marked observations, both in your letter and in the enclosures under 10, 13, and 14 deduced about those expenses, we have likewise accommodated to the fact that the rulers frequently must be accommodated through granting something that is contrary to custom and inclination, as they say, in order to enjoy their friendship in the future, especially when one is warned, as has appeared from the gift memoranda. And concerning the said ship expenses, we have also seen that the cause of the greater number of crew during the laytime was such that it could not have been set lower. Regarding the deficiencies that occurred, noted in the received letter and declaration under 15, as well as the comparison of the standard weight against the calibrated weight, we have, after these sufficient proofs are taken into consideration, nothing else to note than that the Commissioner promised by letter of 12 November to return the latter at the first good opportunity, for it might already have happened had it not been hindered by the balance there. The higher charges of the most recently ended book year compared to the previous one, namely the year 1737/8 compared to 1737 in your books, showing in comparison to us that they amount to f1496: 1:— and originate, as is also observed, from the presence of 2 ships in the year whereas in the previous there had been only one, it was thus well to be conceived that this caused more expenses, having had further its true indicator in each entry and also having resulted in accommodation. And notwithstanding the same also happened with respect to the proceeds, according to the calculations at the net yield, which first showed a profit without 25 percent loss of f32869. 19- or 103 ¼ percent, and after deducting that quarter capital f16703:16: or 52 ½ percent profit, it was nevertheless plainly to be seen that the smaller sale of goods made, despite the higher yield in the percentages, has caused the overall result this last year to succumb. Wherefore we must well concede to the cautious zeal of Your Honour in the matter of trade and consideration of the obstructions of the competitors, it being certain that the market is virtually spoiled for everything and will become even more so regarding all commodities, unless the price current of Your Honour could soon be changed to the advantage of trade by a lesser supply of merchandise by foreign nations, or a greater sale than there has been at present, according to Your Honour's indicated remaining stocks. Which we heartily wish, in conformity with the hope given by Your Honour, may soon entirely change masters in an advantageous manner and into profitable specie, in order to obtain a new order fulfilled from the expected merchandise. That the aforementioned spelter was left in the ship, we consider well done, since we also sent it unordered and thus as a trial. It would nevertheless have been a good thing if some 15 to 20000 lb of powder sugar had remained alongside it for stowage, because Your Honour's remaining stock would then still have been 1 [illegible] pounds, and would for the present have been enough of that sweetness about which there is such heavy complaint there. The return of the 5 bales of soesies aurangshahi and 6 bales of guineas, which Your Honour's letter of 22 August of the current year says were not wanted, and yet were demanded by us in 3 different orders, we could entirely justify or let pass unnoticed, since our humble requisitions were founded thereon, just as the latest departed order by the ships Huijs te Foreest and Opperdoes has again been provided with a good quantity of Surat linens upon Your Honour's request, and in our opinion does not promise much better results upon arrival. We shall therefore see the outcome of the one and the other, considering the soesies can be improved with a good advance, as there is hope for that, but regarding those guineas, which are sold entirely at m:s 24: 1 piece or 2 half pieces loss, this being at the net yield 12 2/5 percent and profit in the gross only 11 ¾ percent, it also serves for information that the Surat linens have not been in demand here. It also appears that several other commodities, among others the salempores brown and blue, do not want to move according to wish, with which Your Honour is nevertheless richly provided without having been able to sell anything in the past year. Regarding that linen, as well as the other commodities, its turnover must be attended to with all mercantile means, because the blue colour causes the deterioration of those cloths, and here in the said time no more has been disposed of than 7 pieces at 10/6 percent, at the net yield 41 1/5 percent. However, since from the first of September to 21 November last 70 pieces have been disposed of for an equal advance, we have hope of being able to get rid of our remainder through God's blessing. With the white variety, it was in the first said time somewhat more in demand.

Yet, concerning the spelter, as we still have a remainder of 570 lb of it lying here, and only one piece of 44 lb has been taken by the merchants so far at 9 maunds white and 13½ black, and as there is almost entirely no demand for it by anyone, and I also doubt being able to obtain that price for the further remaining quantity, it will, according to my judgment, not be profitable to have this principally transported hither. The powder sugar, provided it is reasonably white of colour and not of the commonest sort, will, according to the indicated price current, still be fairly saleable here, the more so because the remainder we had on hand here, together with the candy, has been entirely disposed of (although 1/3 part of the first-mentioned, being very liquid and syrupy, and which the merchants would not accept for cash, was bartered against lapis tutia at 54 maunds for 6¾ lb). And as concerning the ordinary bleached coarse Guineas, as I do not know the sample nor the price thereof, it cannot easily be judged how that commodity might be sold. Furthermore, I have the honour to communicate that trade concerning the pound-goods has for the most part succeeded reasonably well here, but with the piece-goods it goes somewhat sluggishly, though we do not yet lose hope that the same will in time get moving a bit better again, which may also be heartily wished. Having from the proceeds in cash of the traded goods currently purchased and, besides the prizes and lapis tutia, have ready lying in the warehouses approximately 70,000 lb of wheat to be able to send with the Adriana upon her arrival here.
