From Persia under date 25 February 1739. However, regarding the first matter, it should also be noted that in the month of January two more English ships are due to arrive here, headed by a Secretary of Police from Bombay. The two others that recently arrived from that main place brought Persian writings for the Neder Sja Mhamed Takkie Kan. Furthermore, accompanying these are two Mogas letters, of which Your Honour can retain one and send the other to the said ministers, being of different dates but of the same content, having come in here from various places, in case and should there be a desire to make use of them. After concluding the aforementioned matters, we come to learn that the Bombay government (if it is not just another lie) by sea to Sind have dispatched their complaints directly to Nader Sja about the violent acts committed by the aforementioned Beglerbegi against their nation here in the past month of October. What will follow from this time must reveal, but it is speculative; and however their petty shop may be crammed anew with fresh cargoes from that main place, the old pretext of seeking revenge, lodging, etc. will surely also disappear of its own accord. 767 From Persia under date 25 February 1739. Furthermore, regarding the present condition of the yacht De Anthonia, for Your Honour's consideration, an extract is enclosed here beside, taken from a letter dispatched to us under date 5 December by the Provisional Fiscal Michiel van der Crap, who recently departed on a commission to Nieuw Laast together on the Adriana, to which we refer by this, both regarding the substance of that matter and concerning the good fortune that seems to be ours regarding the Adriana's repairs at that same place. We shall thank Almighty God from the bottom of our hearts if, with good success, two birds are killed with one stone, as the saying goes. The bearer of this is the courier Sjamhadie, residing over there, who arrived here on 22 October, who during his stay locally for two whole months, but according to Your Honour's writing there, having received nothing, now also departs from here without desiring any monthly pay beyond that. By the bearer of this, Achmed Hocherdij, we received Your Honour's letter dated 12 of the just-passed month of January, fourteen days thereafter; and according to the register, also accompanying it, the copy of what we last dispatched to Your Honour on the 17th of that month is enclosed in this, to which we refer. It has furthermore been confirmed to our satisfaction that proper delivery was made of what was previously allotted to Your Honour from here on 10 December, and that the accompanying packet along with the standard weight had been sent to the ministers at Bassoura on the 8th of the first-mentioned month. Your Honour's stated reasons regarding the wheat and the declarations made concerning it were reconsidered in council on 29 January, and we have therefore questioned the Adriana's officers once again at the roadstead, and heard them declare, among other things, that they inspected on board and showed us grain of the same kind as received from Your Honour there for the account of the Honourable Company; so that from the extract of the resolution in due course further...

From Persia under date 25 February 1739 It appears, and on which account it is only to be desired, that it will be possible in time to learn the sufficient satisfaction of Batavia, and to be provided from there with 4 to 500 sailcloths, both for the relief of the warehouse here and to accommodate your Honour, since we have been sorry to have to learn of the poor prospects that have been and still are there for obtaining good sorts and the necessary articles, due to the closed passage by sea, etc. All of which one must endure patiently, these being matters to which, God mend it, one is subjected through the troubles, and which might still continue somewhat against our wishes. It is therefore best to suspend a further purchase of that grain until better times and opportunities, in order to succeed according to the supreme and wise order. With respect to the reported sale in your Honour's latest letter, covering up to the book-year, including what was revealed to us by the ship to our particular pleasure, we shall mention once more in this letter that, for lack of native carpenters, the vessel bouche could not yet be repaired, and for that reason we wish all the more for one of the most submissively requested shallops, in order to be able to provide your Honour with merchandise, which according to our supposition will now also not take much longer. That the English and French likewise wish to reside over there does not bode much good, as those nations spoil trade everywhere, as your Honour to your own regret recently experienced with the first imported white cash, to the detriment of the price regarding the produce of the copperworks. And notwithstanding that we must indeed tolerate their incomprehensible embroilment with the gold, we are nevertheless collectively obliged, to the extent of all possibility, to thwart such competitors and to fully applaud the negotiating of the true interest; and furthermore trusting that pyce with the aforementioned Turkish currency in kind may be obtained more abundantly and easily, to the end that if one or another thing is spoiled, or if it cannot be otherwise, having to let it slip because of its unpopularity may again be countered by such products that still promise some profit upon sending the returns. Whereas we consider it certain that the purchased horses for the government of Ceylon will already have been sent hither before the arrival of this letter, we hold your Honour's intention in this case to be well done. And since, with respect to the Honourable Company, the native visits will again be conducted here with similar animals according to previous customs, we hereby order to procure 2 to 3 horses, properly black or brown, without ugly blazes on the head or other unsightly marks, between 3 and 4 years old, and likewise to dispatch them hither in a secure and practicable manner. The requested 9 pieces of weights of 50 lb each will be sent to your Honour at the first opportunity. Likewise, regarding the extra allowance up to 40 mahmudis for firewood, our decision must remain postponed until the specifications arrive here, as we have not received them; but the said messenger has been paid his agreed subsequent premium of 25 mahmudis, with the recommendation not to grant such gratuities to couriers except in cases of high importance, in order to satisfy the so commended frugality. For the rest, we consider the reported news as shared, and the recovered friends hereby tender their heartfelt thanks to your Honour for the kind congratulations, it having made us very glad to learn of their recovery, and we therefore heartily wish your Honour collectively the confirmation thereof. Two translations, the one containing the election of the Persian Viceroy, and the other the great victory of the ruler Bak over the Hindustani, accompany this, which at the upcoming opportunity should also be forwarded to the said ministers at Basra with our kind greetings. Furthermore, on the 30th of January just past, after having had to endure extraordinary constraints, we were finally forced to let the Antonia of Congo direct her course with provisions to Julfar, so as not to let the King's troops perish of hunger, as all the Persians themselves say. From Persia under date 25 Feb: 1739 Wherein is also omitted for what reason Your Honour has received no goods, and the amount of the invoice is left blank. Your Honour's above-cited latest letter we have likewise found accompanied by a copy of a paragraph from a missive that was about to be dispatched from Gamron to Batavia, for the delivery of which we very kindly thank Your Honour, as well as for the communicated news both concerning the Persian ruler Vellinahmeds and those of other natures, entirely amicably requesting you to be pleased to continue in that polite and necessary custom. The principal matter that we know to present to Your Honour from this region for your consideration is the merciful compassion of the Almighty over these almost completely stricken and nearly half-depopulated places, as the pestilence and consequently the gruesome mortality caused by it has ceased entirely, for which the Creator be praised, and for the rest praying that He may grant us a healthy state and flourishing trade, whereby the Honourable Company regarding its precious interests, and we in our humble persons, may enjoy the fruits of a gracious blessing, which so [illegible]. As regards the ungrateful and insolent treatment by Mhamed Takkie, we hope that it will soon take a turn for the better, if that impudent Persian will only remember the multitude of unconstrained services and costly accommodations that he, as well as his prince and other grandees of the realm, have continuously enjoyed from the side of the Honourable Company; but they say all Persians are greedy, staring more at a daily profit than at all past benefactions. Pious, Discreet Sir, On the just passed 11th we received again Your Honour's esteemed letter of 26 August via the courier Tjansadien sent hither, with Your Honour's and the Gamron enclosures, to which we at present will not nor can answer much, because we take the dispatch of the ship De Adriana somewhat heavily to heart and would very much like to keep ourselves to letting the same take effect at the previously stipulated time, as it seems much must depend upon it. The terrible news received from Gamron would have brought us into an even more frightful anxiety, had we ourselves not been convinced of the prudent precautions of the Honourable Commander Koenad and the Council against everything that the Beglerbegi From Persia under date 25 February 1739 Mhamed Takkie Chan and 10 more such fellows with them would want to undertake against the Company's lodge or our nation; furthermore, that his uttered threats, if indeed they contained any truth, were blustered out much sooner from desperation over his troubled state than with any malicious enterprise, considering that upon preservation of life and limb, as Your Honour supposes, he will find enough to do merely to put himself in a state of defense, not to mention offense, and furthermore to atone with his sovereign for that of which he has already so manifoldly made himself guilty, without entangling himself further in any barbaric hostilities from which it would not be possible to extricate himself without the loss of his head. And moreover, that the Arabs also pay close attention to the aforementioned good signs thereof, which will certainly turn out very well indeed, so that the request made may, the sooner the better, be fulfilled to the liking and to the greatest advantage of the Honourable Company; for we cannot state positively whether we shall obtain those animals here as well as has been written to us. But for the sake of brevity, we also refer to the extracts attached hereto of our most humble letter under date the 18th of this month directed to the Honourable, highly esteemed Governor and the Council at Gamron concerning this matter, from which Your Honour will be able to gather how we have in all submissiveness made known the poor availability of such animals here and what high prices are being demanded for them; concerning which we have then at once requested further orders from their Honours aforesaid. 797 From Persia under date 25 February 1739 Requested. We therefore consider your management regarding the delivered and withheld gift goods to be, for the reasons given, in accordance with the respect and interest of the Honorable Company, since without the assistance of the Regent Secola Beecq, who upon persistence with closed hands according to your words could not be expected as required, the necessary crew for the Company's ship could perhaps have been obtained with even greater difficulty. But that you defer to our judgment as to why the borrowed, or rather hired assistance of the 6th, 7th, and 8th of this month went without damage, is a matter beyond our reach, since your proximity surely presupposes better information thereon, and in view of which we also expect in the future that only what is relevant to the matter be briefly cited, especially when one thing and another could and should be provided for by us. For as far as the ship is concerned, we must express our particular distress over what your reports include; yet since its speedy completion is in every way already fully entrusted to your care as honor- and duty-loving servants of the Company, and on that account it also remains recommended above all to keep a watchful eye so that no one embezzles anything for which you are held accountable, which must also be understood to mean that nothing should pass by way of loan or otherwise upon our delivery.
