From Persia under Date 25 February 1739 service of the Honorable Company might be required, to come to an agreement with Cottij, seeing that we here from your reports have understood that the Adriana is no longer needed there, and also the Anthonia has already been refloated, but should the true leak have been found before this arrives (as we here anticipate) and you have consequently been compelled to look to other means than we can think of here, then we will gladly leave such to your prudence; only adding further that the house carpenter, if he can still help to carry out anything, may well remain on the Anthonie; it having been very dear to our hearts that you together with the skipper Hogeboom through God's goodness have escaped the mortal danger, and we hope His sufficient grace will steadily abide and remain with you and all friends, relying then further on your prudent conduct in the present juncture of the aforementioned important affairs, in full hope that thereby all the ship's difficulties may at last come to the long-wished-for end, which may God grant, amen. Our latest dated 23 December having been well delivered and your sentiment expressed therein understood according to the essential meaning, the sending of a copy thereof being consequently superfluous, we shall therefore make no further mention of it at present, but furthermore communicate to you for your information that with the appearance of the runner Alie and the yacht the Adriana in this roadstead yesterday evening at about 8 o'clock, we simultaneously received your letters of the 23rd and 28th instant, from which the good delivery of the 16 Thomans in heavy coin as well as the other matters reported therein have been shown to our satisfaction, not doubting that you will act according to conscience and best ability in such manner as the matters require, always (and if needed also) working in concert, so that we also on that account have well been able to accommodate your proceedings and the sent-over expense account for water and firewood to the amount of 851 heavy mamudis, as such apparently could not be set at less on account of the uncommon dearness of provisions. And since today in council further deliberations were held concerning that which you share with us regarding the dike (provided the first mate Bommer also testified orally that he firmly presumes that the recent bad weather and storm would again have rendered much work over there useless), it has now been resolved thereupon by equality of votes that, in case anew some damage might have been caused thereby to the already so costly dike, or you are of the opinion that the same would not hold, to order you hereby to convene a broad ship's council for that purpose and therein to determine what is most advisable according to the findings of the circumstances, or rather if possible under the presentation of a small gift (or a reasonable settlement in cash) to come to an agreement with the regents of Cottij, and the sooner the better to set course for Gamron, whereas otherwise, the monsoon meanwhile advancing strongly, one might still remain deprived of that vessel for far too long during the upcoming season, and moreover the judicial work would also have to remain suspended, deferring all of which to your good deliberation and attentive consideration; regarding the still unstopped leak, we hope the water at the pump may decrease daily and thus finally that little keel may by God's blessing become completely tight. Wishing for the rest a good recovery to the sick and among them especially the provisional skipper Hogeboom and our equipage master, as well as a speedy restoration, which may God grant them. The deserter Claas Kraneer has arrived well here together with his chest and closed account, and came ashore today because yesterday evening it was too late and no longer feasible, and was furthermore immediately placed as appropriate, but whether that which is in the chest will correspond with the inventory sent along cannot yet be said, since no piece of the linen cloth is to be seen anymore, although the seals still are, and although one was prevented from inspecting the same further by the late delivery of the key, yet at the same time the aforementioned first mate gave no room for bad suspicion, for your governance. Postscript: We do not doubt that Your Honour will entrust the reading of the above to the other friends, containing meanwhile the care of the skipper Gerritsz, which we fully approve. Your Honour's safe arrival there came to our knowledge three days ago through His Highness Mahomet Takkie Chan's brother and authorized deputy in loco, to our pleasure, but alongside that with an unexpected though at the same time very urgent request, both verbally and in writing, in order to save through Your Honour's contained provisions the imperial troops at Sulphaar from their famine, and not to let them perish, since these are matters of extraordinary importance, upon which very much also depends regarding answering yes or no on behalf of the realm, which concerns the state of the Honourable Company in this directorship. Thus, after mature deliberation on what could serve mutually toward the aforementioned end, we have resolved today to order Your Honour hereby, as soon as His Highness's son Mirza Resa has read our enclosed letter and Your Honour has received his letter for Assoer Sultho and the commander of the king's troops at Sulphaar, to weigh anchor and take over your cargo, together with whatever the same shall request of Your Honour and shall be feasible there in men, etc., upon arrival at the aforementioned place, Sulphaar. The aforementioned Assoer is to be handed our enclosed letter and delivered the goods, so that after the work is done, without the least delay, a proper certificate may be demanded from the cited Assoer and you may come directly hither. All of which has been stated beforehand to the regent here, and those in Congo as well as Sulphaar have been notified in writing not to detain Your Honour or send you to any other place, however it might be. Furthermore, Your Honour is not to enter into the fire or meddle with the Arab, as your vessel is not for war, but solely to deliver the imperial troops from famine and thus death, all of which the regents also assure us they will regard and acknowledge as such. Should it happen, however, contrary to our wish, that the Arabs might treat Your Honour with hostility without cause, and it were feasible to warn them before they did so that Your Honour is only bringing provisions and has no orders to wage war, then it speaks for itself that, in accordance with the ancient orders, you are to defend the high respect of the Noble, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen and Masters like men of honour, and to employ all required prudence for your own preservation. Whereupon first serves as a humble reply that before God and men we can testify on our part to have neglected nothing toward the furtherance of the voyage, but that we daily had nothing here but south winds or dead calms, with which we were not in a state to make any progress, but rather to suffer damage, as the land winds of which Your Honours are pleased to mention have not come through to this point. Regarding the taking over of the leaguers of which Your Honours are pleased to mention, this serves as an answer: that during the voyage from Batavia, on account of the badness of the casks, we had to dismantle many leaguers, and moreover, through the strong air here at the Gamron roadstead, a part has also become defective, as we daily find the same in the water-hold, and for that reason we were compelled, as being for the well-being of the Company's vessel and the souls aboard, to retain the aforementioned cooperage. Regarding the missive for Tuticorin, we shall respect Your Honours' esteemed orders upon speedy arrival, which God grant. 861 From Persia, under date 25 February 1739. Persia To the Honorable Carel Koenad, Senior Merchant and Commander, together with his Council At Gamron. Honorable Sir and very Good Friends, Having had delivered here on the 19th and 22nd of September, as well as the 29th of October last, your agreeable letters dated 30 November 1736, as also 4 April and 20 July of the recently passed year, together with all the enclosures mentioned therein, we shall rescribe to you what is necessary in response, thanking you in advance for sharing your successively dispatched reports, both to Europe and to the principal seat in the Indies, whilst we at the same time heartily congratulate the Honorable Carel Koenad upon his promotion to Senior Merchant and Commander over the affairs of the Honorable Company in Persia, wishing His Honor therewith all desirable satisfaction and prosperity. Furthermore, we likewise express our obligation for the promised procurement of the fruits requested by us, not doubting that they will already have been sent hither prior to the arrival of this Directorship, and thus may have long been consumed before we can receive from you those which we come to request again in the small order enclosed herewith; otherwise it would be best that the dispatch thereof were postponed for a while or until a further direct opportunity, for if one wishes to enjoy those delicacies, they ought to be received and consumed in their due season. Pursuant to our promise made by letters of 5 December 1736 and 8 January 1737, we have inquired accurately into the wares which are commonly brought to market in Bengal by Persian traders, but to our regret we find among them nothing for which an order could be placed with any foundation, as the accompanying specification or price current will show further and demonstrate: firstly, that aside from copper and sulfur there is almost no demand for the remaining wares, and secondly, that the present retail prices of both are too fluctuating and too low to fulfill the intended purpose; just as for these reasons one had to resolve to send to Patna the auripigmentum, mastic, and tutty which were sent hither by you as samples and had remained unsaleable since their receipt, in order to see whether an opportunity will present itself there to relieve the Honorable Company thereof without loss; but if not, one will have to put everything up for public auction and let it go for whatever it may fetch. It is true that the English and French trade therein, but on a very precarious footing, bartering—whenever they see no chance of reaching the intended market—their imported goods in their colonies or elsewhere in the outer districts for linens or anything else that can again serve them as cargo, so that their entire commerce is full of complications and consequently contrary to the maxims of our Company; and even supposing that a favorable turn should occur in the vent of merchandise, much difficulty would still reside in the conveyance thereof, for if one were to demand a considerable quantity thereof, foreign vessels would certainly have little inclination to carry it for nothing, and if the shipment were made via Batavia, the goods, especially the fruits, would mostly arrive spoiled. We hope, then, that our efforts in investigating the cloths carried from here to Cottij and Basra by the Honorable Company's competitors, mentioned multiple times, will be attended with better success; the samples requested by us for manufacturing will be sent to Batavia with the ships departing this spring, and the requisite descriptions and valuations of those assortments will be provided in the accompanying invoice for your information. As regards the change made by your resolution of 26 May last in the requisition of linens from this Directorship dated 30 November of the past year, it arrived here in time enough to be carried out, though very coincidentally, because the merchants, having suffered very heavy blows from a storm that arose on the 11th of October last—detailed mention of which is made in the accompanying copies of our humble advices under date 25th of the past month of November, dispatched to the Noble, Right Honorable Lords Majors and Their High Noble Excellencies the High Indian Government—refused at the recent public tender for India to accept the delivery for your Directorship, and that because the requisition

We subsequently express here our owed gratitude for the so favorable transmission of the extracts from the highly revered missive of their said High Mightinesses directed to this directorship, as From Persia under date 25 February 1739. well as the further annexes and papers, received completely by us according to the index, while we shall let the highly valued commands contained therein serve as a guiding rule for us, so that we shall also, according to our humble capacity, compose our letters more distinctly and concisely, nevertheless with the most humble request, if we have committed errors in one thing or another, kindly to overlook them. It was dear to our hearts to notice that the caravan had arrived safely and that the goods dispatched therewith corresponded in all parts with the invoice; also that this small office was credited for the amount of 21 lb madder roots and 2 pieces of plush of mamudis 728 or f 309:8:—, for which, as well as for the delivery of the remaining agreed upon with the 3 porters of the last-mentioned goods, we discharge our very humble duty of thanks, living in the hope that the plush, through smoothing, may regain its former uniform appearance and luster. That Your Honour, after the dispatch of the ship d'Antomen, would send us the requisitions for the shortages on the high-value petitions made, and would then also write what is necessary concerning the attachment of the soft-shelled almonds, which however have not yet been delivered up to now, we have among other things read to our obligation; and concerning the horses that have been petitioned by the Honourable and Venerable Lord Gustaaff Willem van 8 From Persia under date 25 February 1739. van Imhoff, Ordinary Councillor of the Dutch East Indies and Governor and Director over the widely extended island of Ceylon, together with the Council at Colombo, we cannot for the present inform Your Honour anything other in that regard than that we have recommended the procurement thereof to various horse brokers according to the considerations and remarks made, for which good hope has also been given by the same, so that a true report can first be given to Your Honour in this regard by a further opportunity; and upon obtaining the animals, they shall be sent as best they can, forwarding them to Your Honour. While the carpets of the ordered length and width are not to be obtained here, the weaver thereof has agreed to prepare the same, but that due to their large size and the few workers available, he will be able to deliver nothing earlier than in the coming month of March; and since the same must be of the best sort, they will come to cost twice as much as the ones recently sent from here, just as on 8 February of the year 1714, 2 pieces having been forwarded from here for Batavia, mamudis 20 or f 8:10 was paid for the square ell thereof, whereas the ell of the common sort at that time cost only mamudis 10½ or f 4:9:4; From Persia under date 25 February 1739. consequently, the ell, based on the last sent, being of no lesser quality, will now come to cost at least mamudis 32 or f 13:12:—; however, it will constantly be our aim to bargain for it as cheaply as will be possible. 877 From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. of the grandees are presently afflicted with the known ailment, we therefore expect from Your Honor's goodness some pounds of the best sort of that root, in order to be able to oblige the courtiers and other persons of means who desire it, and thereby win their friendship as much as possible. Meanwhile, it has not escaped our minds what was ordered of us by Your Honor in the letter of 11 February regarding the delivery of cloths and with respect to Thomas beecq (who still remains behind, and we wish that he may never come back for it); but the hat delivered to haptembeek we could not well refuse him, so as not to make him our enemy at times through the refusal of such a trifle. Although Your Honor rightly pleases to say that refusing one and delivering to the other only causes discontent to the one who receives nothing, we shall therefore endeavor to counter such requests occurring in the future with prudence. We have also perceived from the highly esteemed letter of instructions from the said Their High Honors that the amount of the household furniture left by the late Mr. Nicolaas Schorer should be brought into the cash fund; but since the same, From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 according to the licenses obtained by Your Honor, was taken into the books for the Company's account and has not been sold, the same will not be able to take place until we may be so fortunate as to find buyers for it, which we greatly doubt, however, since it is entirely old goods. Yet we continue to hope for the first opportunity in this regard, in order to give satisfaction as best as possible according to our duty to that order which is always to be obeyed. And speaking further herein of the outstanding moneys of the said late Mr. Schorer, we can, to our heartfelt grief, report nothing else than that those debtors who are still alive and present here are entirely ruined people and still unable to discharge their debts, so that they can only earn their daily bread with great difficulty. Thus, for the present, there seems to be little hope for the collection of those moneys, wherefore a better time is to be wished for them, when as honest people, according to promises so often made, they will not fail to be able to pay their debts in good conscience, which then must be awaited with patience. Meanwhile, it has also come to our notice with gratitude how Your Honor, in your formal duplicate requisition sent off, had made a request to obtain, through the goodness of Their High Honors, 879 From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. some eaglewood, ambergris, etc., which we then continue to hope will be granted by them, so that it may serve to accommodate those who have addressed us about this several times. Furthermore, we shall not neglect, in accordance with the respected order and what has been written to us, in the future to place all the goods specifically on a separate requisition, so that the quantity and the reason for ordering them may be readily reviewed. And in the meantime, for the cost of the fine oils received for obligations according to the little invoice to the sum of f25:18:8, we have properly credited the main office, as the extract drawn from our journal and annexed hereto will be able to demonstrate if it pleases; hoping subsequently that the two other extracts of the entries that we have had in common with each other since the month of September up to and including March, also to be found herein, will be found to agree with the books of Cotthijs. That Your Honor, not merely for the special inclination of the Persians, but for other necessary motives, would dispatch hither from the available stock of merchandise as much as was indeed feasible, in order thereby to relieve us from having to address Your Honor From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 both to ask for money and to draw bills, we have likewise regarded with appreciation. 881 From Persia under date 25 February 1739. not to cause any habit of wanting to act according to one's own inclination, so that we will also continue to keep a close watch on the brokers' doings; and now regarding the 60 lb benzoin, we can presently inform Your Honours that an Armenian merchant from the upper country has presented himself for it, so that it is not without hope that the said goods will indeed be disposed of, which is why, if not strictly necessary, nothing has yet been written to the Bushire commissioner the Hon. Schoonderwoerd; then we think, with Your Honours' approval, that it is most advantageous, if possible, to obtain the value thereof by selling it off here rather than burdening the same with more freight and charges. But in case the merchant, contrary to our expectations, should at any time change his mind, we shall then, according to orders, write about it to the said commissioner. Furthermore, this is accompanied by a price current of all such goods as are presently traded among the merchants at three and four months' credit, for only small parcels can be sold for cash. For a considerable time, to our knowledge, no runners have departed for Basra, and for that reason we have not yet been able to correspond with the ministers there regarding the Surat From Persia under date 25 February 1739 affairs of Surat; but as soon as the opportunity presents itself—which, according to the Armenian merchants, cannot be delayed much longer, as runners from those parts are expected by them almost daily—we shall not fail to write thither concerning this matter, although those affairs have not yet been brought to a conclusion, the account having indeed been drawn up by the known authorized agent, but now the ketkhudas or elders of the Armenian village of Julfa must examine the same to find out whether the masters must pay the debts or rather the authorized agent, for which some more days are required, while we, for our part, do not fail to have those people continually urged to make settlement; and it is now to be hoped that a conclusion thereof will come shortly. Regarding the giving of presents, we shall, in accordance with what has been written to us by Your Honours, govern ourselves according to what the order entails and not proceed thereto except in cases of absolute necessity, and likewise in future refrain from making any more such proposals. For the favourable communication made by Your Honours in letters of 14 March regarding the advance of the Beglerbegi towards Macquetta and how the harmful ordinance issued by him 883 From Persia under date 25 February 1739. had been annulled, we tender our dutiful thanks, and we live meanwhile in the hope that he will leave Your Honours unvexed in the future; and it has indeed grieved us to the heart to have had to perceive that it was taken so amiss by Your Honours that we discussed his godless actions with certain persons who are truly his enemies and asked advice thereon; but we continue to hope in the Almighty that, with the presenting of the petition, this will have no pernicious consequence, while we shall regulate ourselves according to the contents of Your Honours' previous letter dated 11 February regarding this matter, until such time as we shall have received other orders from Your Honours. From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. An error was committed in the specification of last November regarding the calculation of the straw, which was only discovered after the departure of the messengers in the month of December; for therein, instead of entering m. s 60, only m 30 was stated, which was thus entered in the expense account of December, as will therefore be evident to Your Honors therein. The very severe frost in the past winter season having caused many defects to this old residence of the Honorable Company, which is built almost entirely of clay and straw, as can be seen in more detail from the copy of the statement provided to that end by the committee members and annexed hereto, we therefore most humbly request Your Honors, in order to prevent all further decay, to kindly grant us permission for the repair of the same, since according to approximate calculations made as closely as possible, a sum of m. s 1050 or ƒ446:5:—, or around 1100 md. or 467:10:—, will have to be expended for this purpose, upon which everything will again be properly restored. Another copy of a statement of the found short weights on the sold spices etc. likewise accompanies this, in the hope of also receiving Your Honors approval thereof in due course; the particulars are briefly indicated below as follows: on 450 1/5 lb of cloves, 15 1/5 lb underweight, amounting to 3 3/8 percent; 499 4/5 lb of cinnamon, barely 12 1/5 lb short, being thus 2½ percent short; on 136 1/5 lb of nutmegs, 4 1/5 lb underweight, amounting to barely 3½ percent; 300 lb of pepper, 10 lb too little, being 3 1/3 percent; 90 lb of Javanese cardamom, 5 lb short, yielding fully 5½ percent; 2160 lb of candy sugar, 43 lb underweight, or barely 2 percent; 16830 lb of powdered sugar, 212 lb underweight, amounting to fully 1¼ percent; for all of which short weights the reasons are given in the said writing, which we most politely request Your Honors to permit us to refer to most humbly. Concerning the Russian Resident there is currently not much to say, except that he keeps quietly to his house and on 25 April last received from [illegible] 9 maijbezels cargos of cash, without it being discovered in what coin. Furthermore, we must communicate to Your Honors herewith that on the 6th of the just-mentioned month a certain German gentleman, From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. of great standing, Monsieur Mesgens, accompanied by a Jesuit father and a lay brother of the same order, without any other retinue, arrived here in Isfahan from Basra via Bandar Rig and Shiraz, and has taken up his residence with the Jesuits in New Julfa, having been conducted from that place to here by a chappar of Mirza Ismael, naib of the Beglerbegi in Shiraz, and defrayed for the entire journey, apparently for no other reason than that the said Monsieur Mesgens must have presented himself as a person of consequence, so that he said here to Governor Hatim Beg that he was sent by the Emperor with some secret yet oral commissions to these lands to the Wali Niamat, which is why he requested a passport from the Governor to be able to continue his journey to Kandahar; but Hatim Beg did not take this lightly and asked him for his credentials, and having received the answer that his papers would be sent to him later and that too by sea, the Governor's statement was that without them he could not allow Monsieur Mesgens to depart for the King. It must therefore now be waited to see with time what the traveler will undertake in this regard, as one has not yet been able to discover the least thing about him. As for the news, we will, with Your Honors permission, mostly refer to the extract of the daily journal to be found herewith, and from it, so as not to refer Your Honors entirely thereto, cite the principal matters: that the Wali Niamat, at the intercession made by the former's sister, granted life to the Afghan Hussein Khan and several others of the foremost of that nation, and dispatched some of the foremost of those peoples with their families to Khorasan for the cultivation of the land; item, after the conquest of Kandahar, permitted three days of plundering and massacre to the troops, the Bakhtiaris, as having borne the brunt of the assault, having had among others advantageous privileges in that regard; and that the King, awaiting the arrival of the Turkish ambassador in order to have that fortress razed, discovered therein a capital of 300,000 tomans both in cash and in jewels, and also found much munitions of war and provisions; and received from the Emperor of Hindustan by an envoy a noteworthy treasure of two crores, or according to the reckoning in those lands, 200 lakhs.

From Persia under date 25 Febj: 1739. begins to be subjected thereto, and if in that case extortion and acts of violence might continue, that which so little remains must necessarily collapse into ruins, the Almighty being fervently implored for the best of the poor empire and people. Subsequently, thank God, nothing in the least more has occurred regarding the conduct of Machmed Fackie Chan toward your Honors' esteemed persons, whereby we also hope that it will remain at rest; and in the meantime we are exceedingly obliged to your Honors for that approval, as we had dispatched the porters of the aforementioned copy of the raqam and our letter attached thereto under promises of premiums if they had crossed over in time as ordered by your Honors, having put the same into effect with a good intention; but that they, through their long delay, have not made themselves worthy of the remainder, and yet have escaped a severe correction, is indeed a great favor shown to them by your Honors. Your Honors' respected order to send your Honors, in the future, at least once every half year, the necessary information regarding all remaining merchandise, the contents of the cash, and the prospects thereof, as to how long we shall be able to manage therewith regarding the necessary expenditures, we shall dutifully observe. However, the misfortune that has befallen the ship D' Anthonia has grieved us in the highest degree; yet it is still a good thing that the defects in the same were discovered while still there in the roadstead, and that thereupon the cargo was safely entrusted to the ship Opperdoes, to which we wish a prosperous voyage; for otherwise, the same having put to sea with or without a consort, according to your Honors' certain presumption, upon encountering a tempest, could have run great danger of getting into the utmost distress and unavoidable ruin; whereas, on the contrary, thank God, that damage has been prevented by the discovery of the holes and leakage in this manner; we now only wishing from the bottom of our hearts that that small vessel may be put in a state to be able to undertake the voyage hereafter under God's blessing with peace of mind. As we shall speak more broadly in the continuation concerning the safe arrival of the caravans with merchant goods, we hope Your Honour will take no displeasure in the reply we have given in the margins to the respected demands, which we shall fulfill as feasibly and as soon as ever possible for the preservation of the particular high favour of their High Excellencies, as found herein among other enclosures. Wherein also mention being made of the 4 decatives and soft-shell almonds, it remains to be said concerning the horses that it has brought us joy to observe how Your Honour, from the letters exchanged by us with the Honourable Jacob van Schoonderwoerd regarding this matter under date 4 and 25 May, has perceived the uncertainty of obtaining them here, and in addition the extraordinary expense of such fine requested animals, and that the same can be procured better and cheaper at Bender Aboucher; therefore, regarding us, Your Honour has been pleased to revoke the orders previously given in that respect. Thus we wish with all our heart that the said Honourable Van Schoonderwoerd may be so fortunate as to satisfy those requisitions to satisfaction. And now continuing concerning the rate of the peyses and other species, likewise melted gold, silver, and whatever else may be obtained here at this time, making reference thereto to the end that Your Honour might thereby perceive whereby the greatest profit for our ever highly esteemed supreme masters can be pursued, we have the honour to cite that concerning the dispatch of species, be it gold, silver, or copper money, likewise uncoined mineral, according to the terms of the firman the Honourable Company is free and unrestricted, and such can safely be undertaken, for one hears of no robbers on the route from here to your parts. However, the only difficulties one might encounter therein would be on the part of the government here, which, perceiving the collections of parcels however meager they might turn out to be, might oppose us by preventing the sellers in their sale, as it were, sometimes threatening that no one else may traffic therein and that everything must be brought to the King's Treasury. But since humours can be altered by a gift, we see little difficulty in the dispatch thereof, provided only that some benefit can be calculated thereby for the Honourable Company. Yet for our part, we cannot calculate any from those species themselves, since both the European, Turkish, and Persian ducats without distinction, in small parcels of 10 and 20 pieces, currently balance in this state for 18 mamoodies in white money the piece, and wishing to collect 100 or 200 pieces, one would have to pay 4 and 5 peyses more on each, and to wring larger parcels of 10 to 12,000 pieces out of the hands of the treasurer and mintmaster, they will claim at least one mamoodie, if not more, per piece; so that the piece would thus come to stand at 19 mamoodies, exclusive of freight and other charges, there being thus manifestly, solely on the purchase, a loss of 1 mamoodie on the piece against the price at which the ducat is exchanged at your parts (as fetching only 18 mamoodies). Furthermore, one could obtain only 5000 Thomans annually in abbassis of 7 dongs or 1 1/6 matticaals at an agio of 7 percent with the current new money, and for the Lorish mamoodies, wishing to exchange 5 to 6 Thomans, 3 percent is now paid, whereas if one should wish to exchange 4 to 500 Thomans, one would have to add up to 5 percent in white money; while the copper peysas (which cannot be dispatched without the Governor's consent), the former double ones are still accepted and paid out for one peys, but they are very scarce to obtain, for even 5 percent in silver coin is taken as agio, and in a full year, both here in the city and in the surrounding villages, one could bring together at most up to 2000 Thomans, which with all the charges here alone, because a person would expressly have to be kept in service for that purpose, would have to be laid out at a cost of up to 12 percent. And good fine gold currently costs 23 matticaals, and that of a slightly lesser alloy 22 mamoodies the matticaal, but as the same must come out of the hands of the mintmaster, he will certainly claim half a mamoodie more on each matticaal. Furthermore, the best silver is worth 1 3/10 mamoodies, and other sorts 1 2/15 mamoodies the matticaal. Having hereby conscientiously demonstrated the condition of the species here, it would in our opinion (nevertheless with all humility submitting to Your Honour's much wiser judgment) be most profitable for the Honourable Company to trade in manufactured copper wares rather than the clean, old mands of the same: namely, the pots, exclusive of charges, will come to stand at 16 mamoodies, and the platters and table plates at 22 matticaals, it being well understood as the price is at present; and the mand of the much-used sort is traded by other merchants at 12 3/2 mamoodies. However, according to the statements of the Honourable Company's office broker Wrissendas Jetmellari, in an entire year of the first sort, no more than a sum of 1000 Thomans could be collected and dispatched, according to which Your Honour may be pleased to take the necessary measures. Indian authorities dated 16 October of the past year, we can say nothing other than that, in accordance with our bounden duty, we shall not fail to always satisfy the demands made from here with good-quality goods and, as soon as practicable, at tolerable prices. But regarding the regulations that were given in earlier times, we are unable to provide an accurate report thereof, for the reason that many of the old papers are not kept here, but at Cottij, besides the fact that from time to time fewer or more servants have resided here at the office, regarding which we continue to hope that Your Honors will favorably please excuse us. The first signatory of this expresses his bounden thanks toward Your Honors' highly esteemed persons for having assigned to him as a second person the aforementioned bookkeeper Steven Pruijmenlaar, to whom, pursuant to the subsequent order, all proper transfer having been made by the assistant Isaac de Craane, the emoluments have also been graciously granted, as to a second person here at the office, to be disbursed; whilst he personally as second person further expresses hereby to Your Honors his dutiful gratitude for that favor unmerited by him, with the assurance that he will make himself worthy thereof through diligent attentiveness and fidelity in the service of his, and all of our, always respected lords and masters. The composition of all our humble letters shall, according to our modest capacity, always be done as briefly and concisely as possible, to the end of providing Your Honors the required satisfaction thereby. And it has particularly rejoiced us that Your Honors had been pleased to take contentment in our proceedings regarding the honorable presentation of the High Noble and Stern, Highly Esteemed Lord Adriaan Valckenier as Governor-General of Netherlands India and our highly renowned supreme ruler, as carried out here according to the order and old custom. And since we have made up the account with the well-known Aga Allie Exber for the grand, favorable robe of honor granted to the Honorable Company's old interpreter and delivered to him on the solemn day, and have paid the value thereof of that month, it is now to be hoped that in due time Your Honors' approval regarding this will reach us. The said interpreter, through those favors granted to him, has once again come into reasonable esteem among the regents and others, for before that time he was despised because of his well-known debts and pointed at with fingers, so to speak. We render our bounden thanks for Your Honors' favorable passing of the 5 specifications from December of the past year to April following, as well as our presented little gift of radix China, 1 1/8 ounces of mace, and a hat, together for purchase cost of f66:18:6 and sales value of f72:13:8, while in the future we shall take better care that no more errors are committed in the specifications, as occurred in that of the month of November, which grieves us to the highest degree, the more so because regarding that no correct report could be made to Their High Excellencies, regarding which we further request pardon. We furthermore thank Your Honors in the most humble manner for sending the enacted order of 21 April 1690 regarding the discarding of all improper broken phrases in the writings, according to which we shall then strictly regulate ourselves. We can declare to Your Honors in good conscience that in the past year, concerning the repair of the lodge, all good oversight was exercised, but that such defects have again occurred in the most recently passed winter is principally to be attributed to the extraordinarily heavy frost, against which no one can prevail; for otherwise the economy so highly and frequently recommended to us has certainly not slipped our minds, since it is also our duty to continue to attend to it in all respects. 913 From Persia under date 25 February 1739 concerning the communication, making known that those bills of exchange were settled by the holders on their due date in the sum of 6000 mamudis, and that we, according to custom, have also returned the same to them without delay, while Your Honors' esteemed order was likewise executed by us with the main office for 7200 mamudis, being the aforementioned amount, crediting it with the loss incurred upon obtaining those bills, and debiting the merchants in proportion for the loss of 960 mamudis or 398 guilders, as well as writing off a sum of 240 mamudis or 102 guilders to the profit and loss account. And we further wish to enter into a reasonable agreement regarding the remaining goods, if possible in cash (for which, for the present, the prospects appear very poor to us), so that the cash treasury may thereby obtain something of note to keep. And fervently praying for God's infinite blessing upon this, we express in the humblest manner our obliged thanks for Your Honors' heartfelt wishes so kindly extended to us regarding this matter. Concerning the Russian Resident's received money caravan of 9 mule loads, after repeated inquiries we have learned nothing other than that the coin consists of Persian silver money and that he negotiated nothing for it, but merely sent some medicines, drugs, and garden seeds to Rasht some time ago. From Persia under date 25 February 1739. so that his death was greatly to be feared, and he therefore could not possibly have undertaken such a difficult journey with them, whereas he would otherwise have had to manage with them for better or worse. Which he therefore hopes will be accepted by Your Honors as satisfactory. And we subsequently had so much fetched, as could ever be bargained for, for two of the Honorable Company's horses, which upon his arrival we had received into the stables above the ordinary allowed number of 5 pieces of the same, and which were no longer worth the feed, according to Your Honors' respected order and our duty. But according to an accompanying copy of a declaration granted in that regard by the commissioners, only m:s 480 - or ƒ 204:— was received in cash for both, thus being, according to the books, a loss on the same of m:s 520:- at ƒ 221:—:: as that writing will be able to show in more detail, to which we, for the sake of brevity, most respectfully refer. Thus, with the incurred loss, in the hope of Your Honors' approval, it has been handled in such a manner by properly debiting the profit and loss account for it. Pursuant to Your Honors' honored command, we shall take the general inventory as of the last of this month, and send it dutifully to Your Honors together with the trade books etc. as soon as practicable and as soon as we have completed the accounting for them, so that the Gamron books may be closed thereafter. Now finally, having most humbly thanked Your Honors for the favorable grant of the loan of one of the largest vessels for the transport of cash and provisions to Julfar, as well as the sending of the two translations of the correspondence with the beglerbegi, we trust hereby to have answered Your Honors' letters mentioned in the beginning as concisely and intelligibly as we have been able to accomplish through our slight capacity. However, it is not without apprehension that the godless Beglerbegi and his faction, having bungled matters on the opposite shore, will attempt to lay the blame thereof, for their own exoneration, upon the two Companies, as though this were caused by their negligence in providing aid. But since the inhabitants of the lower country are well aware of the contrary, we do not doubt that the storm of the sovereign's wrath will rebound upon his own head, and that all his threats concerning the Europeans will be of no consequence. At least, as we hear here, he is said to have been transported in chains from Congo to the court, though against this it is also rumoured that he made away with himself by poison, and that the governor of Kerman, the lord Abbul Hatsan Chan, according to the latest incoming news, has received orders to confiscate all his property. Which may the Ruler of the universe grant, From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. grant may be confirmed by the truth, so that the peoples of the lower country, who have had to endure so many unheard-of tyrannies from that despot, rejoicing thereat, may at long last obtain some breathing room. Meanwhile, some time ago it was learned without further confirmation that the well-known former sea captain Mahmed Taggie Chan was chosen in his place as Beglerbegi, just as also the honourable Iman Werdie Sulthoen was nominated to be appointed as Governor of Ganron and Lhaar. Leaving the truth of this to time, we have not neglected, as in duty bound, to make known to various good friends the further services rendered to the Crown by Your Honours, without however involving ourselves further in anything, in order so far as is at all possible not to cause any ill consequences.
