From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. reasons for his conduct will be touched upon herewith; furthermore, there goes alongside under sub letter A: one set of copies of the trade book and journal with their appendices complete, very humbly requesting that the second ditto be written out there, as our present haste prevents this for this voyage, and further all such documents as were judged to be required by obligations and for Your Honours' perusal, and among the same, especially under No. 17, our kept daily journal from the 1st of April to the last of August of this year, as well as a small report No. 18 concerning the confrontation of our daily weights against the standard weights, which on this occasion, in accordance with Your Honours' esteemed order, are sent to Boucher, in the hope of obtaining the same back with some others, since we cannot as yet write them off. We have redressed as well as possible all such error items as were indicated to us in extracts from the Cortijs journal by the Honourable trade bookkeeper Abraham van Suchtelen; however, if it should be that we did not succeed therein entirely perfectly or stylishly, we pray for a gracious connivance, as well as instructions as to how to proceed further therewith, to the end that we may always correspond to Your Honours' good pleasure. The further highly revered orders contained both in Your Honours' esteemed letters and extract resolutions we shall likewise endeavor to obey and execute with the most accurate reflection, so that we may be so fortunate as to merit Your Honours' so greatly desired benevolence, and often give Their Honours the required satisfaction. The news in this region is very divergent, but also of little importance, unless one might consider as remarkable a certain report that the Roman and the Ottoman Emperor had engaged together in a considerable conflict, wherein the latter was reportedly so bravely attacked and destroyed by the former that the damage would have to be considered irreparable for a long time, which might rather cause the resentful Janissaries to incline toward peace than toward a longer war; it is also divulged that England and Spain are permanently at war and have already proceeded mutually to hostilities on account of the matter of Gibraltar, and also that His Britannic Majesty and much less both Parliaments are in no way to be persuaded to its restitution, even if the war should be pushed to the uttermost extremity; of the Beglerbegi Mohamed Takhi Khan it is heard that he has escaped from the Arabs and reportedly fled to Cortij, though in such an incapacitated state that he will reach any recovery with great difficulty; we hope that brutal Beelzebub will now behave somewhat more meekly and tolerantly than before, or that the supreme Satan Lucifer may soon smash his head, so that Your Honours may at last be liberated from that monster. From the crew of the Adriana, the following persons, by name, have become absent to this day: Pieter van Wel of Amsterdam, sailmaker Pieter Geleij of Liege, cooper's mate Gerrit Jansz of Arnhem, sailor Jan Flieder of Tournai, ditto Ulrich Hermans Wigman of Leeuwarden, boy, and Hendrik Wolterman of Amsterdam, ditto. The time for the dispatch drawing swiftly to a close, and moreover it being our intention to draw this up as briefly as possible so as not to inconvenience Your Honours with any excessive prolixity, we shall not expand upon certain particularities of little importance here at present, but rather with favorable permission refer to what has already been cited by us, which is quoted fully enough in this place. On the first of June there arrived here from Spahan the son of Spahan's first interpreter Elias Sehid, named Jacob Jan Sahid, who after some days of presence has shown his inclination to perform the service of interpreter here, in case Your Honours would be pleased to favour him with that capacity and the salaries assigned thereto; wherefore he, as proof of his readiness and his longing for Your Honours' favourable disposition, has also requested us to be permitted to add hereto his humble petition for the obtaining thereof, to which we then in all respect add that he is a fine young fellow of 27 years of age, of sober conduct and reasonably gifted in the Turkish language, which, along with what further belongs to competent interpretation, could in time be considerably cultivated through the good instruction of our acting dispensary-keeper Willem Slaars, and through good attentiveness finally be perfected for the Company's proper services at this sub-station; and whereas we effectively need an interpreter here, while the aforementioned Slaars begins strongly to long for his dismissal from this place, we pray in the most humble manner to be pleased to frame a favourable decision concerning this, and to grant this Sahid, having already descended from ancestors who were the Company's interpreters, preference above others. As the old copperware has still been too much mixed with burnt goods, following orders, the utmost care will henceforth be taken to ensure that the same consists of purer merchandise, and no more extra burnt pots will be accepted, although it will be very difficult to persuade and convince the merchants and other deliverers thereof, without an increase in price, to select only undamaged pieces; for it has been observed here that the merchants know how to turn over the best pieces still fit for use for 14 to 15 mahmudis in silver coin by having them tinned once and given a new appearance. Notwithstanding this, however, there will be no lack of dutiful care to put all means into effect as far as possible, and also that the pesos retain priority, which at present circulate among the merchants in much greater abundance but at the same time are also more expensive in price than only up to 40 per cent, although I nevertheless also hope to negotiate slightly more, even up to 50, upon exchange. Through the accommodation and validation of From Persia under date 25 February 1739. of various previously necessary expenditures and pawns, as well as instructions provided, favorable approval of the commission for the amount of the return cargo recently sent over per the vessel Bouche amounting to ƒ9689-7-4, and the agreement made regarding the house rent, Your Honors are heartily thanked, whilst I have the honor to communicate that the excessively debited underweight of candy sugar per the Anthonia brought here, amounting to ƒ1-5-8, must notoriously have been a clerical error in the letter, as in these account books the same was properly entered at ƒ125-4-8; yet that which was entered too low regarding goods previously received over the months has already been redressed, and for the future all humanly possible care and zeal will be applied to avoid such small errors; and by this only to mention further how a few days after the dispatch of my last letters, I was also addressed for payment of rent by the owner of the caravanserai in whose small chambers most of the Company's goods are stored, and with whom I also had to agree for 48 mahmudis for 6 rooms, namely 4 for storage of the Company's goods and 2 for the broker's lodging, at 8 mahmudis for each per month, on condition From Persia under date 25 February 1739. that the owner likewise remains bound to have all necessary repairs done and to bear the expenses thereof, and also may not rent out any of the mentioned small rooms to anyone hereafter, but leave the sole freedom thereof to me; regarding which I then also hope to obtain Your Honors' accommodation, as the same is truly better and more advantageous to make as an obligation. From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. Honourable and respected Sirs, I most kindly request that by the first opportunity we may again be provided with such merchandise and necessities as the accompanying requisition dictates, to which I also refer. Your Honours will likewise receive herewith a price current and list of the Company's merchandise currently remaining in the warehouses here as balance, together with two specifications of ordinary and extraordinary expenses in the months of April and May amounting to 7 3/8 lb or 2 1/5 percent, regarding which I hope in due time to obtain Your Honours' indulgence as well as approval of the earlier accounts. As regards the hesitant payers, Sheikh Madhkur and the Shahbandar Hajj Ali, since my last letter no payment has yet been received from them, but certainly a firm promise that they will settle within a few days. Concerning the first-named principal, there is no doubt, and I have also been reassured by other merchants; but with the last-named, some patience will need to be exercised, or rather until the arrival on site of Hassan Ali Beg, at which time his outstanding affairs and claims from others are to be settled. On the other hand, matters are proceeding quite as desired with that regent, who shows me his friendship in everything. One will also always be in a position, in small lots, to recover the money over the course of time from the customs duties on the sold goods that the merchant must pay. This having been brought into readiness this far, the runner named Nezir, who was sent to Isfahan on 4 May, returned with a letter from the residents there in reply concerning the acquisition of the horses. A copy thereof is herewith respectfully presented to Your Honours, so that if it please Your Honours, you may verify how in this conjuncture of times it will be very difficult or involve great expense there to acquire the required animals according to the petition. By contrast, in my humble opinion, this could be done much more easily and also more cheaply here, especially if I were reinforced with positive orders so that whenever a fine animal appears, to strike it down at once and so acquire them gradually. Otherwise, when the native notices that one specifically insists on one thing or another and desires to have it quickly in his possession, he holds his merchandise at far too dear a price, and thus one must pay double the expenses that would otherwise fall upon a horse. As for news from this quarter, I can only report that daily many, though mostly false, reports appear, the true facts of which are very difficult to ascertain, as it is kept as obscure as possible by the regents. But if I am to draw a proper summary from all of it, according to my understanding, I believe that at present things look bad enough for the Persians with the enterprise against Muscat, and His Highness must have been put into a difficult position, since the Arabs between here and Ganaveh do not hesitate to raise their heads again, having already seized and plundered a vessel of Sheikh Madhkur that was laden with grain for the army. Which last misfortune also befell the bearer of this letter on his way hither, though by good fortune the papers were still preserved, which was also the reason for his long absence. Finally, I take the extraordinary liberty of presenting to Your Honours my humble petition addressed to the High and Mighty, Honourable, High Indian Government at Batavia, drawn up for relief from the heavy charge concerning the ship Stadswijk, for goods delivered by the petitioner. I most respectfully request that you be pleased to support the same with Your Honours' favourable recommendation together with testimony as to how I, upon the delivery of those Company goods, notwithstanding my then sick and feeble bodily condition, always conducted myself according to duty and, if not better, acquitted myself to the best of my ability; as well as how the packages from which the silk fabrics are missing were well conditioned from the outside, and thus that theft must notoriously have been committed in a manner other than during receipt and delivery; and further, how after the date of the aforementioned discovered shortages it was also discovered by the then principal skipper Cornelis van Alphen, of blessed memory, that the Arabs on the vessels with which the goods were brought from on board, despite European officers being stationed on them at all times, managed in a sinister and covert manner upon receipt virtually to bury themselves under the canassers, and then later to emerge during the shifting of cargo, and managed on a single voyage to steal and conceal in hidden and subtle places (of which at that time a plank was not properly slid shut) fully 1400 lb of sugar, for which they also subsequently underwent their rightful punishment by Your Honours' order. From Persia under date 25 February 1739. Against expectations in that regard, should someone seek a pretext, I will not fail to make the necessary representations concerning the poverty of the merchants and the scarcity of money, etc., upon which Your Honours may rest completely assured; while nevertheless, on the contrary, I must report that by the naib of Dashtestan, the gentleman Rassan Allie Beecq, on 25 July first, and thereafter on the last day of that month repeatedly requested and pestered me that when the Company's ship from Bassoura might arrive here, because of the unsafe condition of the fairway and the fact that their vessels are being robbed everywhere, some grains for the army of His Highness the Beglerbegie might be transported with it. I gave an uncertain reply, firstly that I did not know for certain whether the said vessel would arrive here; secondly, in case it did come, that it might sometimes be fully laden and therefore unable to take in grain; thirdly, that according to reports it was very small and moreover considerably leaking. This last point, to my regret, according to private advice received from Mr. Gutchi on 3 July, when it arrived in Bassoura, has been found to be only too true. Fourthly, that on the Company's behalf there were also some goods on hand here which it would have to load, but that if it should happen to arrive in good condition and there were remaining space, I would then, as a true token of sincere friendship, grant his request as far as possible, with which that gentleman then also contented himself. I now have good hopes that the entire request will soon vanish, since one of the King's ships has already arrived close by here at a place named Hallila, with which they think the grains will be dispatched. Finally, I have to offer Your Honours a copy of the daily journal from 16 April last to the 6th of this month inclusive, together with two monthly specifications of ordinary and extraordinary expenses, amounting in total to 962 mahmudis or ƒ408 17 -, the generous allowances of which, as well as the approval of all the foregoing transactions, I hope in time to obtain. For news from this region, I have nothing else to serve up to Your Honours than the total ruin of Bahrain, which according to rumours has been plundered by the Arabs without leaving virtually anything behind, but was thereafter abandoned again. A King's ghurab has arrived from there close to this place, it is said to fetch gunpowder and bullets from here, and therewith to assist the Sultan. As regards the further robberies along the coasts, one does not hear so much about them now, those rebels, as is rumoured, having been pacified by Sheikh Fsabaera and ordered to keep quiet. Furthermore, the Beglerbegie Mhamed Takkie Chan wrote a very flattering missive a few days ago to Sheikh Matkoer and therein remitted all contributions, both ordinary and extraordinary, and that indeed out of complacency for his services always rendered to him, as that dissembler expressed himself when the distress had become too great for him, but principally to persuade him through those courtesies to agree to a request made for 400 men for his nearly entirely unmanned fleet, according to reports, which has also had the effect that they are already busy here recruiting those people. Yesterday news also arrived here that Chan Jan was about to march to this side with a considerably large number of troops, what may come of which is known to God alone. From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. and having qualified me on that account to proceed according to the circumstances and condition of the times, whether by remaining or by packing up with all the Honorable Company's effects, for which good and important care Your Honors are profoundly thanked; while in answer thereto I can report that, thank God, affairs here are in better shape and more peaceful than is thought. No apprehension whatsoever is felt for this place by any of the Persian merchants and other inhabitants, but everyone remains very calm, for reasons as I have charted more fully for their reassurance to the ministers at Basra on the 26th of the past month upon sending the aforementioned honored letters thither, and to the copy of which, respectfully presented herewith to Your Honors, I refer myself with your kind favor. However, it further serves that, considering the remaining few merchandises still resting here, and that these might not be reinforced by Your Honors with a fresh cargo for another 5 to 6 months, and therefore the inevitable expenses might well eat up most of the profits in that manner, as they say; whether on that ground alone it might not be most advisable to pack up upon the arrival of the Adriana (nevertheless retaining the house until a return or further orders) until such time as the disposition of the High, Noble, Valiant, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen, the High Indian Government at Batavia, over this commission post is to appear, and then absolute measures can be taken by Your Honors with greater peace of mind and advantage. Persia, dated 25 February 1739. Respected letter dated 29 September was safely received via the courier Achmed Kocherdij, together with a copy of a letter addressed simultaneously to the Bassoura ministers written 9 days earlier and dispatched by an English courier (NB: the same finally appeared here as well on the 15th of this month). In brief response to all of this, in order to avoid prolixity, it serves to state that since no reasons can be supposed here to vacate, I have also, in accordance with Your Honors' most esteemed advice, deemed my continued stay with the Company's valuable assets to be most advisable, in the hope and earnest supplication to the Almighty that the distress here may never become so great as to necessitate any thought of departing. Meanwhile, on the 7th of this month, I also dispatched what was necessary to Bassoura, a copy of which is to be sent to Your Honors a few days hence by the couriers on hand. Furthermore, on the 13th of this month the Company's small vessel, the Adriana, arrived here in the roads from Bassoura with a missive from the residents there, from the copy of which Your Honors will be pleased to observe the authorization that the said ministers have granted me to open the chests containing the Company's papers sent by them, which has also been carried out because of the importance of the necessary inspection thereof. The day after its receipt, a beginning was made with all possible speed to load the products lying ready here, intending to be ready with the said small vessel in 8 to 9 days. Yet how vain man's purpose is became evident on the 21st of this month, when the heavens were pleased that night to visit us with a heavy hurricane, accompanied by a dreadful storm and rain, which caused much damage here in this place, mainly because no rough weather was to be expected at this season. However, with regard to the Company's cargo it turned out reasonably well, there being only two vessels laden with wheat that were somewhat damaged by the rain, yet not to such an extent that it could not be completely repaired by pouring the same out onto a sail and letting it dry in the sun for 3 days. But the said ship, the Adriana, suffered more from it, as both of its anchors, by which it lay moored, broke and were lost with a large part of the cable; it was very fortunate that the third anchor preserved the ship and souls in that dreadful storm. Immediately upon the abating of the said weather, I employed all possible care and means to recover the anchors, having 4 divers with a vessel fish for them daily, but this has thus far been entirely fruitless, because the anchors have sunk too deep into the seabed, and all the cordage by which one occasionally gets hold of them also tends to break, so that reliable information regarding this cannot be reported until the close of this letter. Passing on therefore to trade, it serves respectfully to state regarding the goods brought here from Bassoura, such as soetjes orang sjahi and raw guinees, that the samples were indeed shown to the merchants, but according to everyone's testimony, as well as that of the broker, no profit could be made on either of them; indeed, they could hardly be sold for their prime cost. Therefore, I have not proceeded to unload them, hoping that those cloths may find a more profitable market in your parts. However, of the spelter, I have taken the estimated half, or 73 ingots, being 2873 lb, ashore and have charged the same and entered it in these commercial books at f 854 16 5, not doubting that this mineral, though somewhat slowly, will easily sell for the prices previously quoted. Furthermore, not without great trouble, I have brought to completion my first commercial books of this commission, which balance with a surplus profit of f 20197 7 8, which I trust will not appear displeasing to Your Right Worshipful and Your Honors for a first attempt. However, I request, in case any mistakes may have crept inadvertently into the pages, that you will graciously overlook the same and consider that I have never before seen to or learned that work. 1093 1739 From Persia, dated 25 February dispatched, it is true, and on the other hand, the received pile-weight from Bassoura has been left untouched, because the same will be remitted back on the first occurring occasion, or as soon as the balance, on which I had to have new notches made, shall be put in readiness for an accurate confrontation; meanwhile I must also inform you how, on the grain shipped to [illegible], a shortfall has been discovered of lb 2592 or 24 mans hassuim, since through the broker was purchased at successive times 857 mans or 92551 lb, and what was delivered, on the contrary, amounts only to lb 89964: thus 2¼ per cent less, which is principally to be attributed to the numerous and extraordinary large black ants that nest everywhere here and are capable of carrying away an almost incredible quantity, alongside also the rats which indeed contribute their share to it; wherefore I therefore respectfully request to be allowed to write off that damage, amounting to m:s 192: - or ƒ 81: 12:-, to merchant expenses in the trade books, as truly no one could have prevented such. Furthermore, by the arrival of an English ship named Pulteney on the 5th of this month, I received the enclosed packet of Bassora documents sealed under seal, with which I also most respectfully present the letters exchanged with those residents dated 7, 19, and 25 October last, together with a copy of the daily journal from 16 September to 1095. Thus this comes to take its effect herewith, favorably requesting Your Honors that we may be assisted with an assistant surgeon, because according to the testimony of the said surgeon, the same is highly needed. Likewise, the shipwrights having several times made a request to us to be favored with an extra drink a day beyond their usual ration, which, due to the extravagant heat and the daily heavy labor, falls somewhat burdensome for those craftsmen at present.
