1739 From Persia under date 25 February boatmen, whereas as many as 300 are required for work needed so urgently, have been able to obtain. Which, continuing in such a manner, will cause heavy expenses in labor wages; since with the flowing up and down of the water, much mud will slip again into the aforementioned pit, and through this delay it will have to be cleaned anew again. Last night at 12 o'clock came the naib Molla Hassis on behalf of Sevolle Beecq to report to us that a vessel had just arrived with news that the Arabs had surrounded the King's fleet and no vessels could get either out or in, as well as that 25 capital vessels lay before Bassaidoor and that some of the Arabs had entered into the town, likewise all the inhabitants have fled, and that they are also about to arrive here to attack the aforementioned Sevola Beecq; whereupon he requested that we place ourselves in a state of defense and be on our guard lest one might unexpectedly be ambushed, whereupon we thought proper this morning to place our guns on the ramparts and erect a small, sufficient battery for the prevention of damage and for the protection of the lords masters' precious vessel, while in the meantime one learned that some soldiers had arrived from Gamron for the protection of the castle here. Whatever of the truth may be, experience will teach us, and we shall await Your Honors' further advice in the matter regarding what to do or refrain from doing, hoping that our performance in this will have been accomplished according to Your Honors' honored intention. Regarding what was communicated concerning the Arab, one has likewise heard such from His Highness's plenipotentiary Sevola Beecq through the naib Molla Hassir the day before yesterday, and we nevertheless shall have and already have placed ourselves in a state of defense in order to be able to secure ourselves in any unexpected event, which God graciously prevent. Regarding our vessel, we have not been able to obtain any crew up to this day for the closing of the dike, because the people here from Laaft are fleeing, as can be seen more extensively in our last dispatched letters, to which we refer once again. From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. Postscript: We are still lying with the dike open, and due to the scarcity of people one can neither fill it in nor close it up. Excuse the haste in writing. Below was written: Agrees with the original. Signed: Jacob Carelsz, sworn clerk. To the same as before. The night before last around half past ten, we found ourselves once again provided with your Honour's esteemed advice dated the 8th of this month, accompanied by your Honour's Persian letters, 6 pieces of chintz of various sorts, together with 200 pieces of copper coin by a native servant, Hossien Cour. Proceeding to reply to this, we must report in all humility that on the 8th of the current month, God be thanked, the dike was finally filled in above the water level by our weak crew under our command, with the help of our accompanying vessel's crew. Until today, they are still labouring to make it heavier and higher so that it can withstand the spring tide. In this regard, however, nothing has been lacking on our part in doing our utmost, both by night and by day, to show our zeal at the said dike toward filling it in, since we could obtain not the least assistance from the governor here, despite repeated requests, except on the 4th and the 9th of this month, when we were supported on the former date with 12 and on the latter date with 40 of his vessel's men, though for no longer than a single day, even though those vessel hands had remained idle for 3 days prior. Seeing the dike already filled in on the last-mentioned date, they were supposed to provide us with further assistance, but what failed to happen in that regard, we shall leave to your Honour's judgment. On the last-mentioned date, the native carpenter was rejected by our craftsmen, as they declared that person to be entirely unfit for that service and could neither dare nor trust him with a proper caulking job. Likewise, each of them in particular expresses their humble and indebted thanks to your Honour for the granted extra dram, promising and hoping, in accordance with their own pledges, to recompense the same with zealous, diligent, and continuous courage. Regarding the hull, one will first have to wait until the water is pumped out of the pit, as there is currently still 6 feet of water standing in it. Consequently, we cannot yet provide a proper report on that matter, since in our opinion the heaviest leaks and further defects will lie hidden under the keel, and it is impossible for the carpenters to set any timeframe. Following inquiries made of them, they report that they cannot know what further unexpected damages might still reside beneath the keel, and accordingly cannot specify any fixed time as to when completion will be achieved. However, regarding how far they have advanced, they estimated yesterday that one-fourth is completed. Furthermore, it was deemed advisable to dispatch the second signatory of this letter the morning before yesterday to the proxy of His Highness named Sevola Beecq, in order to deliver your Honour's Persian note and to urge him anew to obtain men. This was carried out, and having presented the said note in your Honour's name with kind regards, he showed himself extremely satisfied. After reading it, he thought to lead us on with promises once again, since until today we could not be supported by any more than 12 labourers on the 4th of this month and 40 on the 9th, exclusive of our ship and vessel crews, as we have already most respectfully reported above, and daily he has added no more than 4 men. Since we persisted further on that point, he immediately had a messenger dispatched to the surrounding villages to muster men. Some evidence of this already seemed apparent, as while drafting this letter we saw ourselves reinforced with 8 men, along with further promises that tomorrow he would procure even more men, though this is gravely to be doubted. This moved us to satisfy his greedy nature immediately, as the Persian cares for nothing else than receiving, and possibly this work was delayed because of that. Since we now saw that the said Sevola Beecq remained residing locally, we therefore offered the previously planned gift, augmented by 3 pieces of chintz, namely one of each assortment, from and on behalf of your Honour's name with cordial greetings, as is well conceivable, all subject however to your Honour's approval. We hope that through this gift the said proxy will thus be better inclined toward the Company's side, as well as demonstrate his further true goodwill, aside from the fact that the pistols are included therein, lest we might find ourselves deceived in our expectation regarding his stay here, so that we might then present the 3 remaining pieces of chintz, being reinforced by your Honour's permission, to the former deputy named Molla Hassis. Since through the gift delivered we can now nurture good prospects of obtaining the repeatedly mentioned attestation, we therefore respectfully requested him once again to be pleased to grant the same, to which he replied that when his leg, being afflicted with an injury that prevented him from walking, was healed, he would then come to inspect the ship and provide us with an attestation of its condition.

As far as the Arab news is concerned, the repeatedly mentioned plenipotentiary of His Highness made known to us the day before yesterday in the afternoon that the Persians had concluded peace, and that His Highness Mohamed Sakkie Chan had already arrived at bender longo with the King's fleet and vessels, and was about to march to Cartij, where he was going to welcome him. Furthermore, upon the rumor of the Arabs' arrival spreading, the inhabitants within laaft and the other surrounding villages have likewise taken to their heels, and the Persians still remaining at present come, according to their own confession, to testify that if the Dutch had not been present here, they certainly would altogether have chosen to take to their heels, and the Arabs would likely have conquered the Castle, as well as taken possession of all the surrounding villages. 1141 From Persia, under Date 25 February 1739 What truth this contains, experience will further reveal to us. During the writing of this, a vessel from bendercongo belonging to the said Beglerbeg has appeared here, with news that he was about to depart for Cottij and had ordered the resident Naib to press the men still available to man his ships and vessels for their transport, so that it is feared we shall again see ourselves stripped of laborers. Furthermore, we request Your Honors to be allowed to requisition another 50 pieces of small baskets for clearing the mud out of the said pit, because the 30 pieces last provided are completely unusable and none can be procured locally, just as we also take the honor of offering these our humble lines to Your Honors in the company of a Persian letter, living however in the hope that what is mentioned herein has been carried out according to Your Honors' intended design. As far as our defective vessel is concerned, we shall report thereon to our sensible regret that near the keel, between 3 and 10 feet below on the floor of the ship on the starboard side, several planks of the solid outer hull were observed to be very gnawed by worms, of which damaged planks a portion will need to be completely cut out, and the others will need to be set in at half-timber; and of which some of those gnawed pieces come over sealed for Your Honors' inspection. But as far as the leaks and heaviest defects are concerned, we are not in a position to report the heaviest of them, because some still appear daily in various places, as the first and last signers of this can demonstrate according to the notes kept, if Your Honors please. And proceeding to the condition of our vessel, we must hereby communicate to Your Honors that (praise be to God) we have now discovered the two dangerous leaks that were enclosed on the port side, one being situated about 1½ feet from the keel, where the joint of a plank was 3 inches open, and another ditto being 6½ feet below the wale, both being found entirely open, and the oakum in both of the said joints was completely rotten and decayed. All required care shall be observed, and all zeal and diligence shall be exerted, so that (having been put in proper condition under God's blessing and properly repaired) we may set sail and the true service of our lords and masters may be attended to. Resolution taken in the broad ship's council on the yacht D'Anthonia, lying diked at Nieuw Laast, on Thursday 13 November 1738, all present. The ship's council, having met and sat together upon convocation of the principal skipper, and the members having been informed how already, thank God, the two dangerous leaks that had appeared on the port side had been repaired and cared for to the best of their ability, and moreover that no further presumptive leaks on the said side were to be feared, as well as the solid planking, though only so far as its inspection had been carried out, was found not to be infected with worms in such manner as on the starboard side last year, all of which being known more extensively to the other members; it was therefore submitted to the council for precise and ripe deliberation whether, for the said reasons, it would not be deemed best and most responsible to let the outer sheathing be broken off no further than has currently been effected, since until now the said solid port planking appears to be in good condition; but that, for all security, they should inspect the garboard strake and stem seams, as being the foundations of a ship, as well as the old former leak of the past year near Bassoura, which had been temporarily secured; because the entrusted and required care had been commended to us, and now lying dry there was currently the opportunity, if anything was lacking in the said garboard strake or stem seams, to have it properly and dutifully repaired; furthermore, that they should strip off a few more planks of the outer sheathing near the transom, because a small leak which could not be reached afloat was suspected there. All of which proposals of the aforesaid skipper having been considered and weighed, and found to be reasonable, it was approved and resolved by unanimous vote, yet all this only so far as it shall square with the honored approval of the Honorable Lord Commander and the other Honorable gentlemen of the Political Council: to inspect the said garboard strake and stem seams, with the old Bassoura leak bared of its upper planks, so that, in accordance with our entrusted and obliged vigilance, and for the preservation of the Honorable Company's precious vessel, if anything should be deficient in the said timbers, it might be put in proper condition. It was furthermore voted proper to let the carpenters appear at this meeting so that, after having presented to them what has been mentioned herein, as they are best informed of the condition of this vessel, their sentiment regarding this might be heard; whereupon the said craftsmen were called inside, and the proposals and resolutions herein having been notified to them one by one, the same was likewise unanimously approved by them, namely with the understanding that it should take effect in such manner as has already been cited here above, they being thereupon immediately ordered to carry out what was framed and resolved herein. And since, upon the visitation and inspection performed, they found the often-mentioned garboard strake crowned and infested by worms in several places, and also found a seam open four inches, as well as two small leaks having revealed themselves aft near the transom; it was therefore approved to cut out the said crowned pieces and repair them on half-timber, and properly to stop the three leaks found today; and as no further defects had presented themselves during the said inspection, it was unanimously resolved and decided not to demolish the often-said broken outer sheathing any further than has been done to date, but to have it nailed up, and for the damage of the worms and for the conservation of the said solid planking, to caulk the same entirely, and to put it in such a state that with it, under God's blessing, sea may soon be taken, and the true service and interest of the Lords and Masters may be attended to. From Persia, dated 25 February 1739 I have transferred the crew to the small vessel of Agnet, because this fellow is a lazy scoundrel, and he with his associates has perpetrated a foul trick. For instead of obeying my orders and, in accordance therewith, returning to me with a cargo of firewood to be used subsequently in the service of the Honorable Company, these fellows did not hesitate to pursue their departure from here by night to Gamron. For that reason I was, as it were, forced to have them dredged up by the recently departed runner Ibrahim, and upon the return of that nakhoda to administer some cane lashes to him, not only for such reasons as have already been described, but also because after that time he chopped horribly bad wood for the small vessel Adriana, the thickness of a pipe stem, according to what Skipper Gerritsen assured me. But Mamed Sissie happens to do better in that respect, as can be observed on site upon the arrival of the aforesaid firewood which was felled by that man and left in the vessel commanded by him, because that Francqpe on account of heavy leaking cannot be of service for the time being, and the other on the contrary will come in handy for the chopping of as much firewood as the Adriana will be able to tow away, even though that vessel with two more craft is to receive its full cargo of that wood. But the Anthonia has already taken in its share, with all that was mentioned in the previously cited letter in that regard and with which it would also have departed already if the real leak had been found and the dike that had been constructed had not been washed away by a strong gale which carried the water up and forward with uncommon force, to the astonishment of everyone and the inspection of Skipper Hoogeboom and the undersigned, who, because of the firm reliance they placed on the endurance of that dike, would surely have lost their lives had they not been somewhat swift on foot and abandoned it in the speediest manner.
