From Persia, dated 25 February 1739. However, considering that upon review it was judged that proper order was observed, this could also be granted, just as we could not refuse another request made by those crew members for an increase in pay for such sailors as were promoted in rank by the Resolution of 16 May last, through the appointment of boatswain Hendrik Ditmars, who had been assigned to that vessel, to provost marshal; and the following monthly earnings are now granted in accordance with the regulations, namely: Jacob Struwer of Gelukstad, boatswain's mate, earning f13, due to expiration of his term of service, to boatswain absolute, with the salary of f20 under a new 3-year contract. Coop Claasz of Wildervangst, boatswain's mate's assistant, earning f12, to boatswain's mate at f13, in order to serve out his current 5-year contract for it. Pieter Forre of Vlissingen, sailor, earning f10, to boatswain's mate's assistant at f12 per month, in order to serve out his current 5-year contract for it. While, due to deaths as well as otherwise, the following persons are also currently advanced and increased in pay, namely: Thobias Pieter Schroder of Frederikstad, steward of the Anthonia, relieved to gunner on this shore, while the absolute confirmation etc. will follow as soon as the inventory of the ammunition has taken place and been left to his accountability; and Willem Donselaer of Hellefort, steward's mate, earning f14, to steward at f17 per month, in order to serve out his current 3-year contract for it. Gerrit van der Leij of Amsterdam, house carpenter, earning f25, to master journeyman at f30 per month, under a new 3-year contract. Jacobus de Clerq of Schoonhoven, bricklayer, due to expiration of his term of service, from f14 to f18 per month, under a new 3-year contract. Pieter Sweerus of Gottenburg, sailor, earning f10, to bricklayer at f14 per month, in order to serve out his current 5-year contract for it. There being now also resumed the latest annexes received from Spahan alongside the employees' letter dated 18 May last, and in consideration that the 5 specifications of the expenses incurred in the month of December of the past year, as well as January, February, March, and April of this year, for ordinary expenses do not amount to more than: mamoodies 6449 at f2740:16:8 and extraordinary expenses only an amount of mamoodies 2385:— at f1013:12:8 or together mamoodies 8834 at f3754.9:— Consequently, it was resolved to validate and approve these expenses. While the aforementioned employees, upon their request, will on the first occasion be authorized to repair the dilapidations of such of the Company's buildings there as are noted alongside in a statement, for mamoodies 1050 to mamoodies 1100, with the recommendation to have the same made somewhat firmer and stronger than appears to have been the case last year. The shortages indicated by them in another declaration, which occurred on some spices, pepper, sugar, etc., must first be sworn under oath before proceeding to validation, since they were found to be too excessive. Furthermore, having considered what is further contained in the aforementioned letter concerning the supply of funds for monthly expenses, etc., and noting that it is stated on that account that there is nothing more in cash, and yet the payment of the agreed freight charges for the merchandise to be sent upcountry by the principal caravan must also follow, it was resolved and decided, after deliberation for the best advantage of the Honorable Company, to send them three bills of exchange, for which 7200 mamoodies will be advanced here, against which the employees will receive 6000 mamoodies, yielding therefore a loss of 1200 mamoodies, of which the freight must bear 960 mamoodies, so that the Profit and Loss Account will have to be debited with the remainder or 240 mamoodies, and thus the sale of merchandise at a loss can also be avoided. Also taken into consideration being the petition made by the Colombo ministers in their letter dated 21 August of the past year for 4 sturdy horses, both for the Kandyan court and for the Jaffnapatnam stud farm, and noting that the frequently mentioned commissioner in his latest letter happens to state that such animals can be obtained for a reasonable price in Boucher, wherefore it was agreed to order him at the first opportunity to undertake the purchase thereof and to direct it in such a manner that all may take place as indicated by the descriptive marks received thereof, in order to subsequently arrange transport hither, whether via Shiraz or indeed the ordinary land route, because the conveyance of those animals in small ships can only be accomplished with great danger, and this difficulty can in that manner be avoided. On the other hand, by this so desired occasion, we found ourselves very kindly warned, in case any demands were formed and sent after the cancellation made on 26 May 1737 and their processing and prompt delivery were desired, that we should then declare ourselves in time so as to be considered when the general contracting was done. Thus, this English shipping opportunity was found to be just in time to bring our deliberations to be taken here over to Bengal early enough, and thereby remove the anxiety in which one would otherwise have to remain. Whereupon it was also observed that the merchandise requested from here in the year 1735 had been sent towards Batavia on 20 March of the past year, and had recently been received here for delivery from the main factory. The petitioners, Your Honors' servants, Claas Hogeboom, From Persia under date 25 February 1739 principal skipper, and Emanuel de Poorter, bookkeeper, both serving in that capacity on the Company's vessel d'Anthoria, humbly make known that the petitioners on 6 March of this year were provisioned for 5 months to undertake the Batavia voyage, and whereas, owing to the heavy leakage of that vessel, they were unable to undertake that voyage, the petitioners by order of Your Honors were sent with their vessel to Larak for its repair, and whereas the aforementioned time has now expired, the petitioners therefore request to be accommodated again for two months with the following provisions, to wit: 5900 lb rice 2950 lb cadjang 370 lb rice sugar 296 lb tamarind 370 lb salt 32 lb candles 56 lb butter ½ lb cotton 90 cans coconut oil 53 cans olives 56 cans wine 148 cans vinegar 1776 pieces fish 693 cans arrack api 2 pieces hides 200 lb single nails that remained unfulfilled on the requisition of 30 June. Pursuant to Your Honor and the Council's respected order, we, the undersigned, have again proceeded to the Company's fire engine, together with the materials belonging thereto, and upon inspection it was found that the same were properly repaired. It was also brought forth immediately in our presence for further inspection and testing, which was found by us to be in good order. Furthermore, the repairer of the said goods submitted a sum of one hundred and fifty mahmudis in white money. Wherewith, Honorable, commanding Lord and Gentlemen, we hope to have carried out this commission of ours to satisfaction, wherefore we respectfully take the liberty to be, beneath stood, Your Honors' humble, obedient, and faithful servants, was signed, F. dewilt & A. Honorable, commanding Lord and Honorable Gentlemen, Regarding the finding and condition of the gun carriages and naval carriages, both around this lodge as well as concerning the calibers placed on the rear square, the undersigned consider it their utmost duty now respectfully to demonstrate to Your Honors how, in their presence, on the 26th of July last past, a defective 12-pounder carriage on the west point was properly repaired, and how, on the other hand, on the 30th following, another ditto on the northeast point had of necessity to be renewed on account of its very poor condition, and furthermore, for the same reasons, successively replaced: on the just-mentioned point, 1 carriage of a 6-pounder naval mount; the east ditto, 1 wheel for a 4-pounder ditto; the square, 4 ditto for 4-pounder ditto; ditto, 3 axles for 4-pounder ditto. All of these being not only entirely unserviceable, but through time and otherwise also utterly decayed and found completely unusable. 235 From Persia under date 25 Febru: 1739 Having been found that both exceed very little, the same is acknowledged and approved as valid, as well as understood to write off to the account of Necessary household expenses the M:s 106 at f 470:1:— brought up in another specification for repairs, and that the servants there by letter of 16 June last were qualified thereto, just as they are now again granted permission to leave written off to the account of profit and loss the loss on the two sold horses to the sum of 520 Mam:s at f 224:— for such reasons as, under offer of oath, are demonstrated by the following declaration: "We the undersigned confess and declare how, by the under-merchant and chief, the Honorable Mattheus van Leijpzig, we were expressly commissioned to examine 2 of the Company's horses stabled here, in order thereafter to be sold according to the honored Gamron order contained in the missive of date 16 June past, because two horses above the permitted number of 5 pieces From Persia under date 25 Febru 1739 pieces were in the stable, which was effected by us, the same also having been offered for sale at the bazaar by the stablemaster several days in succession, and the highest bid for the same was as appears below: 1 piece light gray stallion horse, the two hind legs and the left foreleg white just above the hooves, 6 to 7 years old, having been brought up here on 27 June of the year past and noted down in this office for 650 rd:s at f 276.5—, and for which no one wanted to bid more than m:s 300 at f 227:10. 1 piece dapple gray gelding yabu horse, marked with 4 half-white feet, a piece cut off from the ear, being about 9 years old, bought at Gamron on 15 June for the march of the provisional secunde (which was also sent after him on the way, instead of a mule that on account of its weakness was sent back from there to Gamron) for M:s 350 at f 148:15:—, and for which likewise no more could be negotiated than Mam:s 180 or f 76:10.
