From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 to stir up much trouble, to which it will not a little help, as he then had posted armed men in streets and other passages in order to seek a quarrel with the interpreter, banyan, and other servants of the lodge, and thereby cause us all the further trouble, which having thus begun, it is well to be expected will be pushed even further, and when subjected to this, we shall always have to reach into our purse in order to quiet the embrouilles with gifts, which truly will cause a grievous life, wherefore it would be most wholesome if this factory, in case there shall be no obstacles to it of being prevented by the court, were abandoned for some time, and we would have given notice of this affair to the viceroy, but have rather deemed it most advisable to supersede this as well and to await Your Honors' respected orders regarding how we ought to comport ourselves herein in order to get out of it with honor, 487 From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 having meanwhile, in order to be able to make good use of them in the future upon inquiry, obtained such native attestations and other writings, of which we have the honor to offer hereby to Your Honors with all respect the authenticated copies, along with their translations, for your perusal, while we must also make mention here of the trade of the Russian nation at Gilan, namely that annually with the season five of their large barques arrive and depart, wherewith they, not counting the merchandise of the Armenian merchants, bring the following: mostly Dutch, English, and Prussian broadcloths; ditto Russia leather; a few gold and silver woven fabrics manufactured by them; ditto lace of gold and silver thread; ditto counterfeit ditto and tinsel; ditto indigo; ditto cochineals; ditto sappanwood from their own country; flour, butter, lard, sable fur, brought by their merchants secretly, and castoreum or beaver stones. And in place thereof they export mostly silk; a little unperishable or the best sort of madder roots; fine Indian linens, both white and painted, popular among them; common Persian gold and silver fabrics; ditto ditto satins with large bouquets; ditto ditto year pieces or sashes; fine gemstones, though beset with flaws, popular among those half-barbarians; common, but mostly small pearls; and gold European ducats, if they can find their profit therein, while they are exempt from the payment of tolls and other duties, and of their treaties with this empire we have not yet been able to discover anything, for our most humble report. Furthermore it serves for Your Honors' knowledge that the aforementioned Jacob Hermet in these past days said in conversation to the Honorable Company's interpreter Elias Sohid that he is very astonished at how some of the town's banyans and Armenians can openly say that the English are certainly about to depart from here with bag and baggage, whereas the agent Mr. Geekie recently wrote to him of one thing and another, that their general at Bombay wrote many complaints to Nadir Shah regarding the ill treatments by the Beglerbegi Mohammad Taqi Khan, for which reason he is awaiting an answer in order to act accordingly, either to continue further upon better reception, or upon persistence in the bad treatment, also to abandon the factory there; whatever may be of that now, time will make manifest. The copy specifications of the expenses incurred here at the factory in the recently elapsed months of December, January, February, and March accompany this as usual under the routine annexes in order to obtain Your Honors' favorable approval thereon, there having been expended in total for the ordinary and necessary expenses a sum of Mamoodis 6176, or guilders 2624:16:-, and for extraordinary expenditures which could not well possibly be avoided, Mamoodis 2060, or guilders 875:10:-, total Mamoodis 8236, or guilders 3500:6:-, From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 in such manner as the copies will be able to demonstrate in more detail. Furthermore, herein is to be found a copy of the declarations granted by the commissioners regarding the survey made of the defects arisen during the recently passed winter season on these so old dwellings of the Honorable Company, the repair of which being necessary, we therefore most submissively request Your Honors to be pleased to grant us permission thereto, and to that end, according to the calculation made, a sum of Mamoodis 550 to Mamoodis 580, or guilders 233:15:- to guilders 246:10:-, will have to be spent, whereby further dilapidated conditions will be prevented in time. Because the known diamond rose of the late Honorable Mr. Schorer is not estimated at more than Mamoodis 400 or guilders 170:-:-, for as much as the same was entered into the books, and as a known ring, and because of the increase in the price of gold Mamoodis 450 has been offered to us for it, which at another time would not have been disposed of.

From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. to proceed, we have let it go at that price in the hope of Your Honors' favorable interpretation, debited the Cash for that small amount, and favored the Profit and Loss Account for the profit or 50 mamudis, or 21 guilders and 5 stivers, regarding which sales we will not have acted amiss; and regarding the debtors of the deceased, we must here also only cite concerning the well-known Godja Markar, former kalantar of Julfa in the time of the Afghans, how in Anno 1736, on account of his manifold debts, he departed from here stealthily, as we gave notice thereof from here to Your Honors by our humble letter of the 8th of March of the said year; now in these recent days word was received from Bengal by his poor family that he passed away there very miserably about half a year ago, so that there remains no hope whatsoever with us of recovering that man's debit of 50 tomans, unless his two sons who are in India might in time be able to pay the debt of their father, while the other debtors are likewise entirely destitute people, wherefore it will have to be considered a great piece of luck if anything at all can be recovered from them. We have had an application from the Government regarding the retail sale of pound-goods, for the head of the apothecaries having submitted his complaints that, since selling them by small weight to others than to themselves was very detrimental to them, an order might be given in that regard that henceforth no one may trade in such a manner; wherefore first a bond was taken from the city Banyans that, upon forfeiture of a certain fine, they may sell to the apothecaries in the city no less than 1, and to the merchants of the other cities 1½ Tabriz man at a time. Item, thereafter the Company's broker Nagchawissendas, together with the Interpreter Elias Sahid, were also summoned for that purpose by the present city darogha, named Hassan Beg, from whom such a document was also demanded, but this was refuted by exhibiting the raqam, that we may sell the Honorable Company's goods, however little it may be and to whomsoever we wish, without anyone being allowed to bring any hindrance to us therein; further maintaining that we desire nothing better than to be able to trade in large parcels, if only the merchants dealing in cash could be provided to us for that purpose, with which the matter remained settled as such. Since His Highness the Lord Mirza Ibrahim Nawab three days ago, by way of advice, sent word to us that we would not do amiss to congratulate the Viceroy by a petition on his dignity, promising that he would take care of its delivery himself, and that we thereupon informed His Highness that we, being subordinates here, dare not venture to do so without obtaining prior license from Your Honors, but that we would not fail to inform Your Honors of this and simultaneously request license in that regard to effectuate this, we therefore deem it to be highly necessary to give notice thereof to Your Honors herewith, in order to be provided with Your Honors' esteemed orders regarding this matter. Furthermore, it serves for Your Honors' information that the Kharg Shahbandar Hadji Mahmed, having arrived here from the lowlands on the 9th of February last, passed away on the 6th instant after some days of confinement to bed, and his house was immediately sealed thereafter; meanwhile we were not fortunate enough to see that man in his house, he having been occupied with many affairs, nor to receive a visit from him. The extract continuation of the daily register of this office accompanying this will be able to show Your Honors how the news in this region is still generally very variable, to which we humbly refer for the most part; we will only mention here the news that the place, with all the movable and immovable goods of the father, has been given to the son of the slain Ibrahim Khan, brother of the Nadir Shah, with power to exercise absolute command over the entire province of Azerbaijan, who, being barely 24 years old according to reports, is no less a tyrant than those who have appeared in these lands for some years past; and it is further affirmed that the two envoys sent some months ago to the Ottoman Court to mediate peace between the Muscovites and the Turks are on their return journey hither without having accomplished anything, while we also send to Your Honors herewith for perusal a copy of the raqam (accompanied by its translation), which was written by the Viceroy to this Governor Abol Hassan Khan regarding the flight taken by the Uzbek Ilbars, Wali or Prince of Urgench, upon his advance against him, although in our opinion the same does not really amount to much. Since in our humble opinion our difference of only two to three days earlier or later with regard to this important enterprise ought well to be considered and weighed; however, on the next occurring occasion we shall properly endeavor to acquit ourselves regarding this according to our obligation, and for now, with your kind indulgence, only briefly yet politely thank you for all the favorable as well as generous estimates, resolutions, and transactions of our appointments in the service of the Honorable Company under this ministry, in so far as the same have become apparent to us to our extraordinary joy, both from the aforementioned letter and from extract resolutions. No less humbly do Messieurs Sahid and Schaffier offer their thanks for the obtained deeds of their favorable appointments and advancements, the former as linguist and the latter to the absolute capacity of assistant, along with the monthly and board allowances granted therewith, for which exceeding kindness and generosity these men, following a second expression of gratitude, also promise that they shall always endeavor to render themselves worthy not only of that benevolence, but also of Your Honors' further favors through diligent attention and zealous care of their duties. We congratulate the members of the Council there who, upon the demise of the late master, have been favored in their capacities; however, the junior merchant Christoffel de Haan would have wished to have come a little closer into consideration. For the duplicate partly answered earlier, and the copies of translations that were attached to Your Honors' respected letter of the aforementioned 17 January, we must also hereby express our obliged gratitude, and declare with sorrow that the affairs of the realm and of commerce there are in such a desolate state; and although we here at this place are not precisely involved in similar malversations of the rulers, nevertheless the distant, undecided outcome of the war does not allow the merchant to apply himself to trade in any way, which is also the true cause that we have been able to dispose of so little during these past 7 months, in which case the English and French have encountered no better fate than we, considering that they, as well as we, must waste their time in idleness; but it might well happen that things will change somewhat for the better for the Honorable Company, since this year no more than one English and one French ship are expected here, because they have remained glutted with most of their goods, and consequently have not been in a position to provide their equippers with money for further consignments of trade goods hither, not to mention that most Armenian merchants have been utterly ruined through various misfortunes, which does not suggest an unfavorable prospect for the Honorable Company. Rumor has it here among the English as if the first signatory has obtained his relief to Batavia; which being so, he wishes with all his heart to be able to meet Your Honors together shortly in perfect health, and to assure you of his humble respect.
