Persia under date 14 May 1739. To [illegible] and already sent from Bouckher, however well its copy is enclosed herewith and to which we refer. Shortly after the departure of the Adriana on 25 February toward Batavia, there safely arrived here at anchor through God's goodness on 3 March last the ships 't Hoff Niet Altijd Zomer and consort of the bearer of this noted beside, with which we found ourselves favored with their High Noble Rigorous Greatly Respected Highly Venerated missive of 15 October of the past year, together with such merchandise and goods as will appear to Your Honor from the accompanying copy, and likewise that which regarding Your Honor's residency has been graciously approved and decided by said their High Nobilities, not wishing to doubt that all the high orders to be found therein will be executed by Your Honor jointly and by each in particular according to their dutiful obligations, and steadily kept before their eyes as firm guidelines, proceeding from here to 367 From Persia under date 14 May in the year 1739. to trade, the same seems, to our particular regret, still not to revive there, whereas otherwise it is well to be thought that via the occasion over Boucher as otherwise some notice would have been sent to us of its sale and, being deemed advisable, a demand for merchandise. The commissioner in Boucher likewise finds through the English that they act with their goods as if, so to speak, they had defrauded them, and thus it becomes worse and worse everywhere in this directorship, which has also long grieved their Noble High Mightinesses the Lords Seventeen in the Dear Fatherland and has been reiterated again in the most recently received highly respected directive, as can be viewed in detail in the copy extract thereof dated 17 September 1737, and to which we refer, it being only to be reported concerning the trade goods for Your Honor's residency that around 12 March just passed, that matter was thoroughly dealt with, and finally for the well-being of the Honorable Company Persia under date 14 April 1739 Honorable Company such arrangement for dispatch has been made as the extract thereof can show, in full hope that times may yet, and that soon, change for the best of the Honorable Company, as well with regard to a profitable sale of the goods going over with the previous remaining goods, as upon further arrival of required coin species yielding the most profit or least loss, and which we continue heartily to desire, while for the rest we will refer to the copy of what has been written today to Boucheer concerning similar matters in trade, and the samples of linens of various sorts coming over, etc., also named specifically in the invoice and at the end of this letter. Since by the third great favor of said their High Nobilities the High Indian Government we have been benignly authorized to proportion such support of maintenance for Your Honor of what in these times, and in that harsh, bleak climate there is needed more than ordinary, and has also been found in other times in some 369 From Persia under date 14 May 1739 measure to agree with the request made to us as of that date, we have to report beforehand regarding this that such important matters in the future will have to be solicited most humbly directly from and to said their High Nobilities to obtain a gracious fiat, saying thus with respect to what we have been able to judge upon the further instance made by a compendious demonstration at the said session of 12 March, being 8 days beforehand by estimation admission thereto was sought, also such increase and license has been granted as we wish to trust the enjoyment thereof will be seen to be taken conscientiously in inevitable cases, on the one hand so as not to make the disposition in loco rejected by the Noble High Indian Government, and on the other hand ourselves not being obliged to have to recoil here upon palpable abuse, which we do not wish to expect, being seen for the assistance in the extracts of those resolutions among the enclosures going herewith, and to which reference is made, and whereas From Persia under date 14 May 1739 and whereas by said their High Noble Great Mightinesses, upon the forwarded petition of the first mentioned in the heading, Mr. George Gutche was dismissed, and also by thought-out decrees thereby occasioned to choose as his successor Mr. Abraham van Suchtelen, with the addition as his second of the junior merchant Willem du Mee instead of the Gamron warehouse master chosen as merchant, the honorable Christoffel de Haan, together with also the assistant Cornelis Sonneveld in place of the bookkeeper Willem Slaars relocated hither, from which it then follows that the transfer of all the Honorable Company's effects in due form from the outgoing to the new ministers nominated in the heading of this letter will have to be done without delay, in conformity with said their High Noble Great Mightinesses' highly respected intention to be observed in the accompanying venerated missive, and subsequently according to the ancient respected orders granted in the subject case; proceeding further in the extracts of the frequently mentioned

From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. mentioned arrests, further indications hereof are to be found, and therefore we refer ourselves thereto, as well as await the general conveyance after the completed act of resignation of each, properly subscribed in loco, and in addition thereto an inventory of the gold and silver work, as well as wishing furthermore to Your Honours collectively happiness and the desired success with that which has fallen to each from his [illegible] hereby, together with the sufficient blessing of God, to the welfare of the Honourable Company, and own satisfaction. Regarding now the further business matters to which we are obliged to proceed, is to order Your Honours hereby, whenever requesting future further or other orders concerning the one and the other than those already at hand concerning the same or similar matters, to put us then with clearer reasons in a position to be able to comprehend wherein the same could or may consist; this failure regarding the exchange of specie, From Persia under date 14 May 1739. specie, copper works etcetera having greatly displeased the aforesaid Their High Excellencies, so that the same will appear more clearly to Your Honours from the accompanying highly esteemed letter sent herewith, which at the same time to the extraordinary obligation of us and everyone graciously indicates how it came about that fine instead of coarse cassa and mulmuls were previously satisfied, yet the sent sales note is not clear enough, and for the rest it was very unpleasant for Their High Excellencies to learn that in Cottij a placate was drafted and posted, which will have to be sent to us, and such weighty undertakings must no longer occur nor be undertaken. Mention having been made previously of the linen samples to be mentioned hereafter, which were sent to us for testing, and on this occasion are also sent to Boucher for examination, regarding which we hope From Persia under date 14 May 1739. we hope through Your Honours' obliged care and to be applied diligence to be able to learn the desired outcome answering the essential objective in the duplicate of this, as furthermore regarding the also arriving samples of Javanese and Ceylon coffee beans, an extract of the aforesaid Their High Excellencies' highly revered letter to Zouratta dispatched on 16 September 1730 being accordingly enclosed herewith in order to bring that fruit into vent, even if it were with a surcharge, each lb at 8 to 9 stivers light money; the latter sort we hope to sell at W_r 8 or ƒ 3. 8. — or else 1 lb at ƒ — 11 1/3, but regarding the first-mentioned beans the merchants do not wish to show us any good courage, and therefore we shall need to be patient until an occasion of demand arises for us; regarding the turmeric and ginger, it seems best that those assortments, because of their being subject to spoil, be converted as soon as possible if practicable, From Persia under date 14 May 1739. converted, and in case a reasonable profit can be obtained by Your Honours on the one and the other, Your Honours may arrange their requisition accordingly, since via Bombahia to Cochim a request can then still well be made. From Binnewijsent Per the ship Bandar-e Bushehr, To The Honorable Jacob van Schoonderwoerd, Junior Merchant and Commissioner in the Company's Affairs there From Your Honor's brief letter of 3 March, upon its receipt on the 25th of the same month, we were pleased to learn of the good delivery of our last of 17 January and 3 February previous, and it was also not disagreeable to us to learn of the address given for the Basra packet on the 25th of the just mentioned month; furthermore, the horse has arrived and has been stabled as required, and its cost amounting to 1295 Mamoodjes or ƒ546:2:8 has been taken to the account of the Commission, together with 50 Mamoodjes also given to Sjamsjadien Honorable Pious Discreet to 37 379 From Persia under date 14 March 1739 ƒ for the maintenance of the said animal, which is further burdened with 14 Mamoodjes for additional outlay on the way by the said courier, and with all of which that horse comes to cost 1359 Mamoodjes or ƒ577:11:8, concerning which it causes us great regret to have had to decide to abandon its dispatch, in view of our apprehension of its too poor appearance for presentation to the King of Kandy, and therefore that horse has been retained here in the service of the Honorable Company, in order to ascertain whether in time it might not improve for the aforementioned service so that it can be used for that purpose without any scruple, wherefore Your Honor may henceforth for the present suffice with procuring two mares, or female horses, for the Ceylon Government according to the requisition made prior to this date. Concerning Your Honor's 3 specifications of the months November and December 1738 and January of the current year amounting to ordinary expenses with Mamoodjes 379 - From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 1537 Mamoodjes or ƒ60:14:8, and extraordinary up to 339 Mamoodjes or ƒ144:1:8, making together 1896 Mamoodjes or ƒ805:16:-, we have passed this in council on the first of this month after due consideration; however, that Your Honor had to have a collapsed partition wall rebuilt to the amount of 35 Mamoodjes or ƒ1:17:8, we are of the opinion that it is more fitting that such should have pertained to him to whom Your Honor pays rent, and therefore the same shall not be allowed to occur again, just as in like manner the continuous extraordinary item under necessary house expenses amounting to 40 Mamoodjes or ƒ17:- each month, because provisions are becoming cheaper, as can be seen from Your Honor's latest advices, must likewise come to an end. From to have, but as that sort is not wanted here, and one is otherwise sufficiently provided with it now, the same may just as well be excused, as well as that which is still lacking on our aforementioned honorable requisition. From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. 9 August last, the first via the ship Het Huys te Foreest directly, and the latter via Opperdoes to Tutucorin and subsequently brought here via the ordinary overland route, together with the enclosures belonging thereto, and among them Your Honour's home and Batavia dispatches, for whose friendly communication we give Your Honour our obliging thanks, as we also do for what Your Honour was pleased to ship in the said vessels for the benefit of this Commandment, and which was duly delivered here. We have observed with no small pleasure from the aforesaid letters the good expectations Your Honour had regarding a favourable market for the Coast linens sent from here, on which account we have not failed to fulfil Your Honour's requisition of last year for 640 pieces of four-cloths, currently via the ships 't Hof Niet Altijd Zomer and Binnenwijsent, in the hope that From Persia under date 14 May 1739. their improved quality and reduced cost price will contribute not a little to helping dispose of the same with acceptable profits. However, the requested cardamom, cabessa sort, could as little be obtained as the 300000 lb of pepper which Their High Nobilities ordered us to send to Your Honour with the said vessels; for besides the fact that little pepper was gathered in the past financial year on account of the excessive drought, whereby more than a third of the vines dried up, we sent in the month of October last our entire stock of old pepper to the quantity of 501000 lb per the ship Alsem to Galle for the loading of the return ships, and the new crop cannot be transported before the month of March, after which it will not be advisable to make the ships wait, which otherwise From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 of this year would depart from here to Vrijlaad due to adverse weather; on which account one has also been obliged to prescribe them another course out of fear that they might otherwise fall into the rapacious claws of the Angrian pirates. From Persia, dated 14 May 1739. We last dispatched our most humble reports toward Your Honors on the 12th current, and since we in no way doubt their secure delivery, a copy of that writing of ours has, with Your Honors' kind indulgence, not been enclosed herewith. This serves, then, as a follow-up to bring to Your Honors' attention in haste by this brief note the fortunate arrival here of the Company runners belonging over there, Mahmed Derwies and Hassan Sjaboen, who safely delivered to us Your Honors' ever-respected letter dated 23 March last, along with the annexes, all complete according to the accompanying register. Keeping the full reply thereto in reserve for another 10 to 12 days, we shall now merely report regarding the principal matters, such as the silk trade etc., that we did not deem it advisable From Persia, dated 14 May 1739. to disclose anything to the government here, because some difficulties would undoubtedly be encountered in that regard, as the mandates would have to be brought forward for examination. When the suspension of that trade by Nadir Sjah became apparent, Governor Abbol Kassan Chan might perhaps not dare to meddle in it, and thus, the Persian very likely not keeping the matter concealed without the Russian getting wind of it, that nation, as the one dealing most in that yarn, would agitate not a little against it to prevent it by all means. Therefore, according to our humble opinion—submitting ourselves, however, with all respect to Your Honors' far more penetrating judgment—the safest course in this case is for a request to be made directly to the Viceroy Resacoelie Miersa. And although it is also to be feared From Persia, dated 14 7ber 1739. that he might not be willing to consent without prior license obtained from his lord father, it might nevertheless be obtained by giving a reasonable present, at least for a single voyage if nothing else, to be exported from these lands in exchange for the Honorable Company's trade goods, until such time as one sees what turn affairs in this realm will have taken, when, if the desired profits are to be found in that trade, the agreement for the future can be concluded. Although the sort of Lessie Sarlaaffie (undoubtedly meaning Nestie Ijerbaffie) currently requisitioned from the beloved Fatherland, being the very best produced in the province of Gilan and consequently, as the Cabessa sort, differing greatly in quality for the better from the previous kind in which the Honorable Company used to trade with the Persian court, is therefore also different in price, so that from here From Persia, dated 14 May 1739. under date of 11 June 1737 we provided a separate report on that yarn. If in the meantime it were desired, without making a request to the court about it, that thread could well be procured through Banyan merchants—though not without an advance provision of money—in the required quantity of 2,000 lb over 3 to 4 trips, and subsequently dispatched in the name of Moors, Banyans, or others, with payment of road tolls etc. according to costs, or even via Bassura for shipment, provided, firstly, that there is no fear at the trading post of any embroilments in that regard with the beglerbegie, who sine dubio will have full knowledge of the annulment of the silk contract and also that this trade must be carried on with none other than the court, and secondly, that the shipment in such a manner, via one route or another, be profitable for the Honorable Company. Regarding this we shall await Your Honors' esteemed From Persia, dated 14 May 1739. orders in order to govern ourselves most obediently accordingly. But to take the untroubled path in this case, it is, in our humble opinion, best to petition the court for it, since it will not be for another 2 months that it is time to make the purchase of the remainder. And regarding that trade between this court and the Russian court, we must further state that a certain credible Armenian merchant, upon our inquiring how matters stood with it, told us under a pledge of silence that the agreement concluded between the present king of these lands, Nadin Sjah, and the Muscovite court allows the merchants mutually to bring and carry away all sorts of trade goods without paying any tolls and duties; but that this monarch has privately contracted with the Armenian merchants who trade in Muscovy, in order to remain free of all chicanery, to transport the silk in his name to Russia, provided that they pay into his treasury the tolls etc. which they From Persia, dated 14 May 1739. would otherwise have to pay in Russia, just as the other Gilan merchants also sell that thread to the Russians for such a price, a matter which is nevertheless completely hidden from that nation. From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. presumably arrived in Shiraz in good order, having been fully inspected, assessed, and taken from him by Your Honors upon arrival. In the meantime, the second set of trade journals of this small office was found to be identical with the first, and the other papers sent were likewise found to correspond properly with the register. We now thank Your Honors not only for forwarding the enclosures alongside the two aforementioned honored missives, but also for having credited Spahan for the amount of the mentioned goods to the sum of ƒ5335:17:8, as well as for handing over the remaining promissory note of 80 mamudis to the pedestrian Molla Mahmed, as conditionally agreed with him by us. And it was from the bottom of our hearts pleasing to us that Your Honors were pleased not to disapprove of the speedy dispatch of that letter carrier due to the importance of the affairs. 451 From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. Whereby, following the order, we shall always continue to do our duty in such cases, and also satisfy Your Honors' orders regarding the 100 pieces of sound Japonsjes for the Ceylon Government as soon as we shall be able to obtain them; however, to this day, very little hope in that regard has been given to us. Never has the Kirman wool factor Auwannees allowed the least news to reach us of what occurred upon Mahmed Tackie Chan's arrival there between him and Governor Abbas Hassan Chan concerning the Honorable Company and the English gentlemen, in the manner in which he then gave notice of it to Your Honors by letter of 16 December, unless such letter, having been sent on an occasion by English runners, might have been withheld by other ill-intentioned persons, or lost along the route. For everyone scrapes and plucks whatever he can, and all affairs, however abominable, even indeed much worse than Nero's or other former tyrants' doings may be, are immediately made good, if only one comes to offer to these unjust judges with the blood drained from others. This indeed teaches us to associate with such persons with all prudence, so that, under such a violent and vexatious government, we may come out of it safely, for without doubt the loose snares to entangle someone are everywhere. From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 which Nadir Shah has undertaken against the Banyan Caravanserai—for so Hindustan was called by him—and it must therefore be accounted a miracle if, having touched so great a bee-hive, he escapes from it so easily without being stung, notwithstanding that some still tell great wonders of this enterprise of his, namely that he crossed the very wide river above Peshawar by means of a constructed bridge, and marched still further upwards, so that the Indian himself is said to have evacuated Shahjahanabad and retreated to the Deccan. However, on the other hand, very bad notes are struck concerning him, namely that they did let him cross the said river in order to lure him deeper into the country, but that they, the bridge having been broken down from behind by the Afghans and having been renewed, subsequently gave battle and From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 and cut down more than 20,000 men, and that he, being now in great fear, would gladly make peace, but that the Hindustani plays entirely dead in that regard. Finally, one cannot learn here the certainty of his further progress or weakening, because all the chapar stations, in which, for fear of marauding parties, many people had to be kept to convey the same from one place to another, have been dismantled along the entire route from Kirman as well as that from Mashhad to Nadirabad, since he now needs those troops much more for the battle than to let them remain lying there idle. Thus, for the delivery of the mutual writings of father and son, the necessary care is being taken by the Afghan Ghani Khan, who lies in garrison at the last-mentioned place with a body of good troops. 157 From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 whereby people here remain almost entirely deprived of news, so that the Persian himself, being in great perplexity, now comes to ask us for news from Hindustan, whether none can be obtained from Surat etc., to which we then truly answered that we are entirely ignorant in that regard, just as we will also never engage in such matters in the future, but rather, to avoid bad consequences, keep ourselves ignorant in everything, while we express our obligation to Your Honors in the most humble manner for the news so favorably communicated, with the promise that it shall always be in our power to watch over what has been entrusted, and to put into practice whatever is required for the preservation thereof as well as of our persons, according to human possibility. From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 was followed, for the reason that one had to verify and demonstrate therewith how much was lost with the 13 pieces of Anno 17 and 46 pieces of No. 8, both in weight and in money, and why it pleased you to order further that this still had to be executed exactly, which now being done by us, will appear at large by the copy declaration now being sent over, showing that the remaining pieces of the first, still consisting of 224 pieces, weigh 122½ matticaals, thus diminished from the previous weight of 274 4/5 mans by 152 7/10 matticaals, and of the second, now consisting of 174 pieces, of the 80 matticaals in weight only 51 are remaining, consequently diminished by 29 matticaals, which diminution added together in weight amounts to 181 3/10 mans, and in money according to the said bridles known in the books for f 120:8:-, or on the first, which is known for f 167:3:-, lost f 92:13:-, and on the second, running for f 76:11:-, lost f 27:15:-, wherefore we have written off the said lost amount according to order to the Profit and Loss Account, 965 From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 and for the remainder of f 123:6:- debited the Main Office, and we add the seven-monthly extract from the trade journal, which also accompanying this, will be able to demonstrate at length, just as we also hope that the said extract, regarding the other entries that we have in common with one another, will be found to agree, and into Your Honors' hands will be safely delivered the 390 remaining pieces of the said two bridles, which we have carefully placed in a small box, sealed with the Company's seal, and marked the same with V, and entrusted for delivery to the bearers of this, the runners Hassan Boeloeds, Noes, and Goda Bax, with the humble request that this office may be discharged for the amount thereof in the precious books. From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 the state of affairs is in the highest degree to be feared, that the happiness so wished for by everyone will still be far to seek, unless it is found by the truth and confirmed, which is said of the government of the Viceroy Reza Coelie miersa, that he has good intentions with the realm, and after the destruction of the Usbeecken and Lasgies, who now and then ravage in the Upper Lands, will make good orders for the revival of the fallen state throughout this realm, which one must patiently await from Time, while making friends in the meantime is highly necessary for the advancement of the affairs of the lords and masters, and such being world-known and customary in all regions, not easily being able to happen without accommodating such persons with the offering of pleasant sweet little flowers of the hand, thus the presenting of gifts to the aforementioned serdaar was with us also entirely unavoidable.
