33 From Cape of Good Hope, the 6th of March 1739. The goodness of your Right Honourable Sirs may be granted, while the ship Rijnhuijzen has likewise been brought so far into readiness that the same, weather and wind permitting, will be able to be mustered and dispatched on the 10th of this current month of March. Furthermore, on the 4th of March aforesaid, the ship Maria Adriana arrived at this roadstead with 6 dead, 1 sick, and otherwise in good condition, having sailed on the 14th of December last from before the Bengal banks in company with Hofvliet, Crooswijk, and Batavier, from which it was separated on the 26th of January of this year at latitude 17 degrees 21 minutes and longitude 103 degrees 15 minutes in heavy weather; as also on the 3rd and 5th of this month, the two following foreign vessels likewise put into port here, namely: La Marie, a French ship, Captain Jean Baptist Lozie Houvet, sailed on the 10th of July of the past year from Port Louis with 16 cannons and 75 men, to proceed further on its voyage to the Island of Mauritius; Schafsburij, an English ship, Captain Boekij, sailed on the 23rd of December Old Style with 32 pieces and 130 heads from From Cape of Good Hope, the 26th of March 1739. also to confirm that, notwithstanding all diligence and trouble that has been applied thereto, nothing more of the copper of Duijnbeek or any other still missing goods of the wrecked ships could be recovered than that which stands recorded in our humble missive of the 15th of February of the past year, as the copper chests of the aforesaid ship Duijnbeek became entirely covered with sand at the passing of the last bad monsoon by the heavy surge of the seas, such that although they have been daily busy up to now searching for the same, both with the help of divers and otherwise, this has nevertheless been in no way successful or fortunate. Further, we have the honour to send herewith to your Right Honourable Sirs four secret letters concerning the flags and signals that will be displayed in the coming year 1740 from the Lion's Head and Robben Island, for the reassurance of the return ships that are then to arrive at this roadstead, to wit two for your Right Honourable Sirs and an equal number for the Ceylon Government, with the humble request that the latter may be further forwarded on suitable occasion by 33 From Cape of Good Hope, the 6th of March 1739. Upon received notice that in the night between the 3rd and 4th of this current month of December, some linen had been stolen from the Company's packages lying in the Company's timber warehouse, which was only discovered yesterday towards evening, we, the undersigned members of the Honorable Worshipful Council of Justice of this Government, together with the Junior Merchant Sieur Johannes Needer, acting as Fiscal pro interim, went there today, and after examination held in the presence of the said Sieur Needer, found, firstly: That in the roof of the said timber warehouse, a hole had been made towards the inside, and that beneath it a lot of planks were stacked on top of each other up to the said roof, upon which the thieves, having climbed with the help of a plank that, according to the statement of those who first noticed it, was leaning against the aforesaid roof, must have climbed up, made the aforementioned hole in it, and subsequently entered the warehouse, with a small rope tied to a lath hanging out of that hole to the outside. Having entered that warehouse, we saw that inside, underneath and up to the repeatedly mentioned hole, likewise a 39 From Cape of Good Hope, under date 6th of March 1739. likewise a lot of planks were stacked on each other, such that the perpetrators of that rogue piece of work were able to descend to the bottom without difficulty and out of danger, and it further appeared to us that one of the Company's packages lying therein, marked No. 803, was cut open and that there were no more in it than 65 pieces of barradcherries out of 94 pieces which, according to the note of the commissioners, should have been in the same, so that 29 pieces were stolen from it; having further also seen that in another package a hole was cut open in the seam, but nothing stolen from it, apparently because it was coarse linen that lay therein, that cargo being wrapped with gunny, whereas the aforementioned barradcherries were wrapped with sailcloth; and furthermore in that warehouse, near the place where the packages lie, a window towards the sea side, which is otherwise always closed, was open, which it is presumed the thieves must have done in order to pass the stolen linen outside through it. From Cape of Good Hope, dated 6 March 1739. Tuesday the 13th of January 1739. Upon the discovery that some linen belonging to the Honourable Company had been stolen from the Honourable Company's garden house, we, the undersigned members of the Council of Justice here, together with the junior merchant Johannes Needer acting as fiscal pro interim, went there upon the first report thereof, towards nightfall, and saw there that the door of the room on the left-hand side as one enters stood open, and that in that door near the lock a square hole, just large enough to put a hand through, had been broken, and that this room, whose door closes with a latch lock, must have been opened by pulling on it; furthermore, we also saw that of the Honourable Company's packs stored in that room, three pieces had been cut open and many goods stolen therefrom; having further also discovered that the window and glass pane situated in the wall of the pantry, which lies adjacent to that house towards the upper side, were also opened, and that the upper latch of that window was off, through which window the thief or thieves in all likelihood must have broken in, and subsequently, after having forced the small window of the room on the right-hand side communicating with the pantry, went through the said room into the front hall, where they broke the door of the room on the left-hand side in such manner as is mentioned above; and because during this inspection, which was begun late, it had grown dark, and we therefore dared not go near the Honourable Company's packs with a burning light for fear of an accident, we postponed the recounting of the goods that still remained in the broken-open packs until the following day. Having learned from the head gardener Andries Frieter and from the under-gardener Willem Godschalk that the latter yesterday morning at ten o'clock, on the occasion when he was going to work around that garden house, had discovered that the outer door of a certain porch adjoining the frequently mentioned pantry, of which the corporal who has the night watch there keeps the key in custody, was open contrary to custom, as was also the window and glass pane of the frequently mentioned pantry, which he made known in the afternoon to the aforesaid head gardener Andries Frieter upon the latter's return to the house, who thereupon had the same made known by him, Godschalk, to the corporal Witte, who was to have the watch at the frequently mentioned garden house that evening, who, in the presence of fellow-corporal Jan Godfried Pdese and under-gardener Hendrik Anthonij Duijkman, answered thereto: I already saw on Sunday evening that that window and glass pane stood open. The following day, being the 14th of this month, we the undersigned, with the aforementioned Johannes Needer, went again to the aforesaid garden house at 7 o'clock in the morning, and upon recounting the goods still remaining in the aforesaid three cut-open packs, found: that in a pack of bethilles sister gantij marked 178, wherein according to the note of the commissioners 100 pieces ought to be, there were no more than 41 pieces, such that stolen therefrom are 59; that from a pack of basta brown blue marked No. 860, containing according to the note as above 80 pieces, had been stolen 34 pieces, as there were found therein no more than 46; there being in a pack of salempoeris ordinary bleached marked 859, wherein according to the note ought to be 80 pieces, found no more than 74 pieces, so that taken therefrom are 6. From Cape of Good Hope dated 6 March 1739. 20 whole or 40 pieces half guinees brown blue were taken 5½ whole or 11 half pieces because upon recounting no more were found therein than 14½ whole or 29 half pieces; a certain pack marked No. 863 which according to the inscription contained 100 pieces coarse mouris was completely emptied by theft, and only the cloth in which that linen had been packed was found; besides which several other packs were found cut open at the seams; from which, however, nothing was stolen, apparently because the linen inside, not being the finest, did not please the thieves. How the perpetrator or perpetrators may have climbed onto that roof and made the above-mentioned hole therein is something that we, the undersigned, have not been able to discover or trace; for although on the ground directly beneath that hole some bricks lie upon one another, they are nevertheless stacked so low that a person standing upon them can barely or not at all reach the roof with their hand, so that the thieves must have made use of something else to achieve their roguish purpose. 57 Cape of Good Hope under date 6 March 1739: 258 pieces of porcelain dishes out of 400 pieces found broken upon opening 2 cases, No. 39 and 266, being 64 1/2 percent net, certainly to be attributed to the poor packing of the cases, as was noticed upon opening them here. 392 porcelain saucers out of 1000 pieces found broken upon opening 3 cases, No. 1, 266, and 268, being 39 1/5 percent net. The shortage of rice, 8154 lb. of rice out of 300000 lb. found short, being fully 2 1/3 percent, is certainly caused by spillage both during loading at Batavia and unloading here. Likewise, the ullage on the arrack arose from the working of the ship and the absorption of the arrack, the leagers having been properly stowed. 909 cans of arrack on 20 leagers found less upon gauging, being 10 of 5 inches, 9 of 6 inches, and 1 of 7 inches, with one cask ullaged at the bilge, being barely 12 1/3 percent. For all these aforementioned reasons, the undersigned respectfully request that they may not be debited for the said shortages and defects. Cape of Good Hope, the 21 February Anno 1739. By the ship Rijnhuijzen, our last humble letter of the 10th of this current month of March was dispatched to Your Right Honourable Excellencies, of which a copy is attached hereto. We shall take the liberty of referring to it, as well as to our respectful postscript of the 13th of this month, serving to notify you of the arrival in this roadstead of the Bengal return ship de Batavier, which was to have been repaired before the departure of the said ship Rijnhuijzen. However, because that vessel departed from here suddenly on the same day and put out to sea, this could not take place. Per the ship Reijgersdaal, received the 17th of June Anno 1739. From Cape of Good Hope, the 20th of March 1739. Arrival of two other Company ships belonging to the Ceylon fleet. Since then, on the 14th of the present month of March, the ships Hofvliet, with 3 dead, 8 sick, and otherwise in good condition, and Berkenrode, with 3 dead and 7 disabled men, have also appeared in this Table Bay. The latter ship, having departed from Punto Gale on the 5th of January of this year in company with Everswaard, Landskroon, de Pallas, and Van Alsem, was separated from them on the 9th of February following by a sudden hurricane and heavy storm, without their being able to report anything further about them to this day. In that storm, they lost the foresail and topsail yards, fore-topmast, main-topmast, mizzen-topmast, crossjack yard, sprit sail yard, and main topsail yard, along with all the sails that were attached to them. Likewise, all their gunpowder became wet, the mainmast was cracked, the foremast twisted, and the bowsprit severely damaged, which, however, can still be remedied by fitting fishes. We shall therefore apply all diligence to repair these damages as soon as possible, in order to put that vessel in a condition to continue its further voyage to the Netherlands with peace of mind, in the hope that Almighty God has protected the other Ceylon return ships, along with the ship Crooswijk still missing from Bengal, from greater disasters, and that we may see them arrive safely in this roadstead in due course. In answering Your Right Honourable Excellencies' highly esteemed letter of the 10th of November of last year, after having first respectfully expressed our thanks for that which Your Right Honourable Excellencies were pleased to communicate to us regarding several ships from the fatherland that have successively arrived there, as well as which other ships were still to be expected from Ceylon, Bengal, and from China; likewise for the return of the three cases of fine cloth and two ditto with clothes which, upon the outward voyage of Beukesteijn and Wickenburg, could not be found at this place; and also for forwarding our letter with the seeds belonging thereto to the ministers in Bengal; and especially for the kindness that Your Right Honourable Excellencies were pleased to exercise regarding the care of the goods and provisions brought here by the ship De Visch; furthermore, not failing to send the garden seeds requested from here by Your Right Honourable Excellencies, as has already been done now, annually and always as early as possible to Batavia; just as such removals of personnel as occurred with respect to the master shipwright Barend van Doekum will henceforth not be done except in cases of utter necessity, and it will be completely avoided in the future to again grant permission

Granting permission to return to Batavia to someone who was discharged to the fatherland by Your Noble Grand Reverences, in the manner as was done for the burgher Pieter Palm, regarding which we respectfully request that Your Noble Grand Reverences will please interpret this favorably for this occasion, and likewise that we failed to send a proper report to Your Noble Grand Reverences on the subject of the burning of the spoiled spices, which were ruined from the wrecked ships; should such, by any unfortunate occurrences which God may yet prevent, have to happen again in the future, it will then no longer be neglected, but on the contrary dutifully observed and complied with. Just as we will also not fail to forward to Your Noble Grand Reverences the collected orders, both from our Lords and Masters from the fatherland and from Your Noble Grand Reverences, which were successively given to this government and have devolved upon this administration, as soon as it will be possible to bring them together and they shall have been excerpted and compiled; furthermore, the cadet Godfried Stolts, having arrived here on his designated vessel, has proceeded to the Netherlands, but in respect of which person the orphan masters of this place have made known to us what difficulties and cavils they once again had to endure from him; notwithstanding that, in accordance with the order of Your Noble Grand Reverences contained in the resolution of the 19th of August of last year, they made all haste in their power to assist him and to comply with the sentence of the Honorable Respectable Council of Justice of the Castle Batavia of the 16th of April of that same year; but that he, Stolts, above and beyond the said sentence, has now again made a frivolous claim of eight thousand six hundred seventy-two rixdollars and three stuivers upon the heirs of the late burgher Michiel Leij, with an added request that we please send the resolution taken in that regard by the orphan masters on the 26th of the past month of February, along with the Company's papers, to our Lords and Masters and also to Your Noble Grand Reverences, to the end that it might be seen therefrom that the orphan masters have been willing and ready to give that man all fairness and satisfaction, but that with such a pretentious and arrogant person nothing in the world can be accomplished; which could not be refused by us, for which reason we take the liberty on that account to let a copy of the said resolution of the orphan masters accompany this for the consideration of Your Noble Grand Reverences. Resolution of orphan masters. Sami of Batavia departs for there with this ship, and the other exiles will be dealt with according to the orders. Request that delivery of the letters may be granted. Furthermore, Sami of Batavia, who was relieved of his banishment by Your Noble Grand Reverences, is sent to that capital with the bearer of this letter, just as on the contrary, according to the order of Your Noble Grand Reverences, residence at this place has been granted to the assistant Ian Boijens; and also with the three petty kings of Milouwa and Labican removed hither, along with the deposed Hermanos regent Douw Manoe and the other exiles who have arrived, action will be taken according to the instructions of Your Noble Grand Reverences in their regard, as well as the sentences pronounced against them; meanwhile, the two slaves confiscated for the benefit of the Honorable Company, by name Cajib and Sidaing, have been properly entered into the trade books of this office. Also, the letters requisitorial sent hither by Your Noble Grand Reverences from the Honorable Respectable Council of Justice of the Castle Batavia were handed over to the Judicial Council of this place, wherefore we take the liberty to let the answer thereto accompany this; humbly requesting that address and delivery may be given by Your Noble Grand Reverences to the letter, as well as to another missive enclosed herewith which is written by us in reply to the Worshipful College of aldermen of the just mentioned capital of Batavia. Departure of Le Philibert and arrival of another French vessel. The French ship Le Philibert having departed from here on the 14th of this month for Pondicherry and Bengal, on the contrary on the 14th thereof there arrived again to drop anchor in this Table Bay the ship of the same nation Le Duc de Chartres, Captain Drias, having sailed on the 23rd of December past with 30 guns and 150 men from Port Louis, intending to continue its voyage from here to China. Meanwhile, further goods that are to be brought with this ship to your Right Honourable Highnesses in deduction of your requisition made from here are the following goods, namely: 400 lb of various garden seeds 5000 pieces of hard almonds 20200 sheep 240 lb of medicinal drugs of various sorts All according to the bills of lading and invoices accompanying this, the almonds having also, pursuant to the order of your Right Honourable Highnesses, been counted out and weighed to the ship's officers, while the almonds, raisins, and aroquis still lacking from your Right Honourable Highnesses' aforesaid requisition shall likewise be sent over at the next opportunity. Yet with respect to the grain crop at this place, we must to our regret inform your Right Honourable Highnesses that over and above the troubles from worms and otherwise that have befallen it, which were already noted in our humble letter of the 24th of November of the past year, there was added that just as it was about to ripen, the south-east winds raged extraordinarily fiercely for several consecutive days, so that considerably much wheat was destroyed or shaken out by this, wherefore, having attentively considered this in our meeting of the 3rd of this month and having besides found that under the last of the past month of February no more than 8000 mudden of wheat, rye, and barley remained at this place, whereas nevertheless the two-year reserve of those grains which, according to the order of our lords and masters, must be kept on hand for this government amounts to ten thousand mudden, it could not be decided otherwise here than that only 20 lasts of wheat and 5 ditto of rye shall be shipped to your Right Honourable Highnesses' capital, so as to satisfy in some measure the requisition made from there, although otherwise, closely calculated, that small amount of grain could hardly be spared from our secure provision, which wheat and rye we shall then also dispatch to Batavia at the first suitable opportunity, in the hope that your Right Honourable Highnesses will be pleased to be satisfied therewith for the reasons given. Which ships were followed on the 9th of the same month of April by the vessels dispatched by Your Right Honorable Worships: Rooswijck, Loverendael, Westcappelle, and 't Huijs te Spijck; the ships Westerbeek, Buregnies, and the Ceylon return ship Berkenrode, which have been mustered for several days, still being detained here by the persistent contrary winds. With the bearer of this, there are transmitted to Your Right Honorable Worships, dispatched to the Netherlands, the letters and accompanying appendices consigned by us with all the aforementioned return vessels to our Lords and Masters, to which we shall defer with respect, and further humbly thanking Your Right Honorable Worships for the goods that you have been pleased to send back hither with the aforementioned ship Rooswijk, per which we have received Your Right Honorable Worships' venerated missive of the 22nd of November of the past year, from which we have observed with joy that some homeward ships recently departed from this place had safely arrived there again, and that on the other hand, the ships Enkhuijzen, 't Wapen 89 From Cape of Good Hope, the 15th of April, Anno 1739. Damage that Everswaerd suffered from a severe storm to its spars, etc. Arrival of the Ceylon ships Everswaerd with 4 dead and 9 sick, as also the Pallas with 2 dead and 9 sick. As well as the Pallas. But with much regret we must bring to Your Right Honorable Worships' notice that on the 25th and 27th of the aforementioned month of March, the Ceylon ships Everswaerd, with 4 dead and 9 sick, as well as the Pallas, with 2 dead and 9 sick, arrived in this Table Bay in a very desolate condition. Which ships were so battered by the severe storm of the 9th of February last that, from the former, besides throwing three 6-pounder pieces of artillery overboard in order to lighten the ship, and cutting away the mainmast, its other spars, along with all the sails attached to them, were broken and blown away, only the foremast and bowsprit excepted, which latter, however, is still cracked; in addition to which, the longboat standing in the ship was broken in two, and the gunwale, with everything lying on the deck, was heavily damaged by the falling of the mainmast. The Pallas being also so distressed by that storm that they not only likewise had to sacrifice three 6-pounder pieces of artillery to the sea and cut away the mainmast, but further lost all the topmasts, yards, and the foretop, as well From Cape of Good Hope, the 11th of April, 1739. How matters stand with its cargo. Hold of the ship. Visitations performed by the commissioned skippers. as also another 3-pounder piece of cannon, which was knocked overboard from the aft of the quarterdeck by the violence of the sea. Moreover, the cutwater was carried away and an entire suit of sails blown away; furthermore, having had 8 feet of water in the ship during the storm, and not getting it pumped dry again until the 13th of the same month. And since its officers also reported that the cargo had settled a full two feet from the keel from fore to aft and had shifted entirely to the starboard side, we immediately commissioned some skippers to inspect carefully, in the presence of the Equipage Master Jacobus Moller, the hold of that ship already opened by the ship's officers, and to give their judgment concerning the cargo contained therein and whether it ought to be unloaded, or how matters otherwise stood with it. Which commissioned skippers, having performed this work, reported in their report, annexed in copy to the aforementioned appendices, that having properly inspected the hold of the aforesaid ship De Pallas, and having broken open the cargo on the starboard side (where the water had risen to within four feet of the deck), they found 91 Cape of Good Hope, the 15th of April, Anno 1739. Order to unload, and for which the necessary commissioners were appointed. With which vessel one that already beneath the third layer cinnamon bales were wet and sugar canasters were entirely empty. Which sugar, as well as the saltpeter, constituting the bottom layer of that vessel, they maintained that, due to the voluminous sea water taken in, it must certainly have dissolved, and that thereby the entire cargo from aft to fore has settled fully two feet, so that for that reason they judge it strictly necessary that this ship should be unloaded here in order to prevent all further damage. Whereupon, having deliberated on this in our meeting of the 31st of March last, we deemed it best for the greatest service of the Honorable Company to make an immediate beginning therewith, to which end the necessary commissioners have been appointed to offload these goods, both on board and here on shore, with all required precautions and the utmost circumspection, to receive them, to have the wet goods aired, dried, cared for, sorted, and repacked. Arrival here of the ships Strijen and 't Slot Cronenburg. were brought, in order to be able to continue its further voyage to the Netherlands in company with Eeverswaard, while they are likewise very diligently engaged in repairing the severe defects and shortcomings of these two poorly conditioned vessels; may the Almighty be prayed graciously to preserve the Company's precious ships in the future from similar and all other disasters; although we once again have reason to grieve over the precious ship de Boodt, which, according to what the Right Honourable and Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Directors of the Chamber of Enkhuijzen have been pleased to write to us under date of the 13th of November of the past year, is said to have perished in the Channel between Plijmouth and Darmouth with the loss of 10 to 12 men. On the 3rd of this present month of April, the ship Strijen arrived and anchored here with 26 dead and 21 sick, as well as on the day thereafter, without disabled persons or dead, the ship 't Slot Cronenburg, having sailed alone from Texel on the 22nd of December of the past year, and both for the rest in very good condition, so that, after they had enjoyed refreshment and been provided with the required necessities, we were able to dispatch them from here today; the officers of that last-mentioned vessel having, at the South latitude of 34 degrees and 35 minutes, From Cape of Good Hope, the 15th of April, 1739. The ship Lis was hailed, which is expected at the first opportunity. Pursuant to orders, the three return ships to be named below have been duly inspected, both upon their arrival and on this day as they were being mustered, by us, the undersigned Independent Fiscal and commissioned members from the Council of Justice here. We, the undersigned, having been expressly commissioned by the Honorable Officer in Command, Master Daniel van den Henghel, to inspect thoroughly the hold of the ship Pallas lying in the roads, and to give our opinion regarding the cargo thereof, whether that ship should be unloaded, or how matters otherwise stand with it, declare that we have examined the hold of that vessel and opened the cargo on the starboard side, where the water had reached to within four feet of the ceiling. We found that under the third tier cinnamon bales were already wet, and also sugar canassers were completely empty, which sugar as well as the saltpeter, making up the lower layer of that keel, will certainly have dissolved due to the water, since the entire cargo from aft to fore has settled by more than two feet. For which reason we deem it absolutely necessary that that ship will have to be unloaded here. Wherewith, trusting to have complied with the esteemed order of your Honors, we submit this as our humble report. The Honorable President having today convened the meeting extraordinarily for the third time concerning the claim that the soldier Godfried Stolts maintains to have against this board as former administrators of the estate of the late former Burgher Councilor Michiel Ley, according to his papers in hand, and regarding which he had given notice to the Honorable President that he had drawn up a proper inventory as had been ordered of him by this assembly on the 18th and 25th of this month of February. The same Stolts, having appeared at the meeting, From Cape of Good Hope, dated 15 April 1739. produced to the assembly some documents with their inventory, but it was at the same time found that the aforesaid inventory again differed from the submitted documents. Notwithstanding this, in order to comply as soon as possible with the esteemed order of the High Government of the Indies, contained in their resolution dated 19 August 1738, furnished in copy to this board, and to finally bring to an end these lengthy proceedings of the aforesaid Stolts, who continually seeks to help himself with nothing other than cavils and frivolous evasions, their Honors made known to Stolts that they were willing promptly to satisfy the contents of the sentence of the Honorable Council of Justice of the Castle of Batavia, dated 16 April 1738, insofar as it concerned their Honors in the aforesaid capacity. Inquiring of him accordingly what he now lawfully claimed by virtue of that sentence, Stolts thereupon declared that he had to be satisfied not only according to the tenor of the aforesaid sentence, but also, along with and in addition to that sentence, according to his privately drawn up account presented at the meeting, a sum of eight thousand, six hundred, seventy-two rixdollars, and three stuivers. From the Cape of Good Hope, the 16th of May 1739: Register of the letters and papers which under today's date are dispatched from here to his High Honour, my lord the Governor-General Adriaen Valckenier, and the Noble Lords Councillors of India at Batavia, per the ship the Paarl, namely: No. 1 Original missive addressed by the Noble Lord Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel, together with the Council, to his High Honour and the Noble Lords Councillors aforementioned. 2. Authentic copy of letters consigned with various return ships to their Right Honourable High Mightinesses the Lords Seventeen, under the 17th of April, as well as the 6th, 7th, 12th, and 11th of the present month of May. 3. Two ditto reports concerning the inspection of the return ships Everswaard, Hogersmilde, the Pallas, and 't Wapen van Hoorn. 4. Authentic copy declaration of the commissioners who aired, dried, and again delivered ashore here the goods unloaded from the return ship the Pallas. No. 5 111 From the Cape of Good Hope, the 16th of May, Anno 1739. No. 5. Authentic copy declarations granted by the commissioners who assisted in the shipping off and reloading of those goods on board your aforementioned ship the Pallas. 6. Authentic copy declaration of the specially appointed commissioners who garbled the brought-in cinnamon from that vessel, sorted the good from the bad, and again delivered it. 7. Ditto deeds of promotion of several persons on this ship the Paarl. 8. Ditto requisition for some necessarily required equipment goods recently made from the Netherlands for this place. 9. Bill of lading and invoice of what was loaded here into that vessel. 10. Expense account of what the same has received at this place. Per the ship the Paarl. Received the 9th of August, Anno 1739. Departure of three return and two outward-bound ships. With the last-mentioned vessels, notice was given that we would repair the defects of the ships Everswaard, Hogersmilde, and Pallas as speedily as possible. Right Noble, Stern, Highly Respected, Valiant, Right Wise, Prudent, and Most Generous Lord and Lords: On the 20th of the recently passed month of April, after waiting several days for a good wind, there departed from here together for their respective destination ports the return ships Berkenrode, Buvegnies, and Westerbeek, as well as the ships arrived here from the Netherlands, Streijen and the Slot Cronenburg, with which two last-mentioned vessels we had the honour to forward to your Right Honourable, High Mightinesses our letters of the 15th and 17th of the aforementioned month of April, and therein among other things dutifully to give notice that we would apply everything in our power to remedy the flaws and defects of the disabled ships Everswaard, the Pallas, and Hogersmilde, lying in this roadstead at that time, as speedily 113 From the Cape of Good Hope, the 16th of May 1739. Rough and rainy weather caused much hindrance. Everswaard having departed from here on the 12th of the current month, and the other two having become ready to sail on that same date. Arrival of the ship 't Wapen van Hoorn, which became separated from the ships 't Casteel van Woerden and Enkhuijsen on the reef of Anguillas. as possible; although the rainy, rough weather, which we had here in the meantime for ten or twelve days continuously without intermission, in which respect it greatly delayed this and also caused much hindrance with regard to the stepping of the new masts in those three other hulls, as well as the preparation of the necessary spars for the same, as well as regarding the airing and drying of the wet goods which had to be brought ashore from the cargo of the ship the Pallas, of which further mention will be made below, that work was nevertheless pursued with such diligence and speed that the first-mentioned ship Everswaard, having received its dispatches on the 6th of this current month of May, came to depart from here on the 12th thereafter with the first favourable south-east wind that followed; and on that same date the ships the Pallas and Hogersmilde also became ready to sail. Meanwhile, on the 6th of the aforementioned month of May, with four sick and 3 dead, the return ship 't Wapen van Hoorn arrived here, which had become separated on the 2nd ditto previously in rough weather from the ships 't Casteel van Woerden and Enkhuijzen on the reef of Anguillas.
