Instruction and orders according to which the commander of the wrecked brigantine victoria Ian kroop together with those of the hookers dispatched to the mosselbaeij, ter mijen and de hector, Bastiaan verdoes and Gerrit vander Port, shall have to conduct themselves concerning the inspection and having repaired of the defects which are present on the ship Oostrust staying there. Having received this, they shall, without the least delay of time, as soon as weather and wind shall permit such, have to depart from this roadstead with the above-mentioned two hookers, and thereupon proceed to the mosselbaaij, the south point of the same lying at 33 degrees 55 minutes south latitude, appearing more closely from the chart that has been given to them thereof. Upon their arrival in the mentioned mosselbaij they, being assisted by the master of the shipwrights of the Company's yard here, barend van dockum, and three of the most capable shipwrights under him, together with the fellow shipwrights who will be aboard the said ship oostrust, shall first of all have to examine in the most accurate manner whether the leakage and further defects of that vessel cannot be remedied at that place in such a way that the same can thereby be put in a state to be able to continue its voyage from that anchorage to batavia with complete peace of mind, in which case, and whereto provisionally have been offloaded into those two hookers 8 pieces of bracket knees 20 carvel planks 2 planks of 8 inches 800 lb spikes 100 pieces of drawn tackle bolts 200 bundles of moss 100 clews of oakum 10 pieces of pine planks of 2½ inches 50 ditto ditto ½ roll of sheet lead 10 augers 1 sheet of copper 2 of the heaviest screw jacks 3 pieces of broken beams from the stranded ships 2 pumps with their accessories the aforesaid master barend van dockum, being helped by the aforesaid shipwrights, shall without delay have to make a beginning with repairing and remedying the defects of that ship oostrust, and in that regard put into work everything that according to his knowledge and best judgment shall be deemed useful 207 From Cabo de Goede Hoop under date 1:st 7ber: 1739 to be useful, and to be able to serve for the benefit and speedy repair of that keel, concerning which the officers of that ship, together with the aforesaid commanders, shall also have to contribute everything that is in their power, seeing that the execution of all this is left to their good judgment and prudence, as well as, if it were deemed of necessity that that vessel should be lightened in order thereby to seek reduction of leakage, to be permitted to act concerning the further unburdening of that ship, whose money chests and other most precious goods, as is trusted according to given order, will already have been brought to land, in such manner as according to the circumstances of the matters and according to seamanship shall be found to be proper for the greatest service of the Honorable Company. But if it were found that the repeatedly mentioned ship oostrust could not be prepared or put in state at the place where the same is currently lying for the continuation of its voyage to batavia, or that too much time would have to be wasted for that, they shall then, in order to prevent the perils to which that vessel would be exposed by a long delay in such a dangerous roadstead, have to examine whether that keel cannot at least be repaired so far that the same could come up from there to here, concerning which nothing shall have to be spared nor neglected, but on the contrary everything must be practiced and applied that could in any way be useful thereto, as the utmost is depending on this for the service of the Honorable Company; seeing the great inconvenience into which one would otherwise get, if it should happen that that ship would have to be stripped at such an inconvenient and dangerous place, and that the goods being therein had to be brought over here, since all of that would have to be done by sea with the two aforementioned hookers ter meijen and de hector, besides which one has no other shipping occasion at hand, and that those two small vessels have so little space that very much time would have to be wasted before one could get those goods here, the commanders of the same, if it should happen that the ship oostrust could or had to come up to here, shall for no reasons whatsoever they might

From Cape of Good Hope under date 1 September 1739 may separate from the same, but shall be obliged to stay continuously alongside that vessel until its arrival in these roads; they shall also, if required for the relief of the said ship Oostrust, take over into the small vessels under their command as many goods from its cargo, and most especially its money chests, as can be done conveniently. If that ship Oostrust can be put in a state in Mossel Bay so that, after repairs have been carried out there, it can proceed on its voyage to Batavia, then, only if it is judged to be of the utmost necessity, but otherwise not, one of the fastest of those two hookers must return hither to take in such provisions as will be required to supplement those used there, for that vessel to continue its voyage. However, if contrary to all expectation it should be so ill with the frequently mentioned ship Oostrust that it could in no way be repaired and put in a state either to depart from there to Batavia or to come up hither, in From Cape of Good Hope under date 1 September 1739 in such a situation they, together with and alongside the authorities of that vessel, may break open the bill of lading and invoice of its cargo on board for Batavia, in order to see from it what the same consists of, after which as much of the most precious and valuable goods, alongside the money chests, must be transshipped into the small vessels under their command as can indeed be stowed in the same, with which they must return hither at the earliest opportunity, and shall then also bring over in duplicate a proper declaration, which must be signed by them, as well as by the ship officers of the said ship Oostrust and the ship shipwrights mentioned in the heading of this, containing the reasons why it is maintained that that ship cannot be repaired in the aforesaid Mossel Bay in one way or another, but must be abandoned there, bearing in mind that this declaration must be confirmed by solemn oath in accordance with the orders of the Honourable Company, and alongside the same all papers and documents relating thereto must also be brought to us, notwithstanding which the copies of the aforesaid declaration and further just-mentioned papers must likewise be dispatched hither overland. Furthermore, Your Honours may not, on pain of our highest indignation, for the present take over into their vessels or transport to this place any private goods whatsoever. If your ship in mosselbaeij can be brought into a condition to depart from there to batavia after repairs are completed, then, when required by the utmost necessity, but not otherwise, the faster of those two hookers must return hither in order to take in such provisions as will be required as a supplement to those consumed there for the continuation of your voyage. From Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of November 1739 Received the 24th of January In the year 1740 per the ship Bethlehem Batavia To the Right Honorable, Valiant Lord Adriaan Valckenier Governor-General and the Honorable Lords Councilors of the Indies Right Honorable, Respected, Highly Esteemed, Valiant, Very Wise, Prudent, Most Generous Lord, and Honorable Lords: After the departure of the ship Delfland, with which we had the honor to consign to Your Right Honorable Excellencies our last humble letter of the 1st of September last, a copy of which is enclosed herewith, the ship Abbekerk, destined for Ceylon, arrived again at this government on the 22nd following, with 14 dead and 38 invalids; which ship subsequently sailed from here to that island on the 11th of the just passed month of October, after waiting several days for a favorable wind. To which vessel, without diminishing the ordinary refreshments and provisions, there were further supplied at this place 1½ last of rice, 4 mudden of peas, and 4 ditto of beans, and this as a supplement for a portion of its brought spoiled bread, which upon inspection was found completely unusable. Furthermore, on the dates mentioned below, the ships that put out to sea from Texel on the 21st of May of this year likewise made for this roadstead: 15th October: the Huijs Marquette, with 45 dead, 84 sick 18th ditto: Bethlehem, with 7 ditto, 4 ditto 23rd ditto: Adrichem, with 6 ditto, 12 ditto Which two last-mentioned vessels were at the island of Saint Jago from the 15th and 18th until the 23rd of July last, where at that time they found anchored the ships Sijbe Casper and Streefkerk, which departed from there two days before them. So that those keels, together with the ship de Lagepolder, which, having been met by the Huijs te Marquette at the latitude of Cape Saint Vincent, was thereafter separated from it between the Canary and Cape Verde Islands, are expected to arrive here at any moment. The officers of the bearer of this, the ship Bethlehem, having complained upon their arrival at this roadstead about leaks in the vessel under their command, express seamen were thereupon commissioned to examine it, who, upon their inspection, found a leak in the bow of that keel near the apron knees, which was subsequently properly repaired and made tight. In addition to which, that vessel also had to be provided here with a new main topmast yard, as the one with which it put out to sea from the fatherland had broken to pieces on the way; by all of which this ship has been put in a condition to be able to continue its voyage to Batavia with complete reassurance. And since it brought no money from the fatherland, we had shipped into it, from the money chests of the ship Oostrust brought here from Mossel Bay per the hoy Ter Mijen, of which more will be said below, five chests, being Nos. 35, 36, 37, 38, and 39, each containing 50 bars of silver according to the invoice from the fatherland, which we took the liberty to open, as well as one small chest with gold and silver thread numbered 523, as appears more fully from the bill of lading and invoice drawn up for it, which is enclosed herewith, to which we respectfully refer; and likewise to the enclosed copy of the certificate of a cook's mate, which had to be made on this ship subject to the further approval of Your Right Honorable Excellencies. Furthermore, we have the honor to forward to Your Right Honorable Excellencies herewith a copy of the declaration granted by the chief surgeon stationed on the ship the Huijs te Marquette regarding the illness and mortality that occurred on it during the voyage hither. These occurrences being the reason why that ship could not be dispatched from here as quickly as would otherwise have happened; but since its brought invalids are now beginning to improve somewhat, and since that vessel can moreover be reinforced with other crew members who remained behind here from

Found that they had passed this point of land, without having been able to make this roadstead since then due to the subsequent heavy south-easterly winds and the currents running towards the north-east; so that they were thereby forced on the third of the following month of October to put into St. Helena Bay, where with their bottom they were to remain until a serviceable wind from the north might give them the opportunity to make this roadstead, or otherwise to enter Saldanha Bay. But whereas it was of great importance for the service of the Honorable Company that they should touch at this and not at Saldanha Bay, because of the great inconvenience in which one would otherwise find oneself to convey the goods found in that hull hither, or at such an inconvenient place to preserve them from spoilage and other mishaps upon their unloading, as it was determined must be done; the said officers were therefore ordered, by the missive accompanying this in copy, From the Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of November 1739. ordered that they should leave their anchorage and come hither with the first favorable wind, and furthermore that for the reasons so alleged care should be taken, if the condition of their ship as well as the state of the weather and wind would permit this in any way, to reach this and not Saldanha Bay, which (provided the required prudence and seamanship were used in everything) was left deferred to their good judgment. In the meantime, during the night between the 9th and 10th of October last, there returned hither to this roadstead from Mossel Bay the hooker Ter Mije, wherewith were brought hither twenty-six pieces of artillery from the ship Oostrust, along with the ten money chests that had been unladen in that bottom and the previously mentioned small chest with gold and silver thread; the master of that hooker having reported to us that the ship Oostrust, which at that time was still in a fairly good condition, had on the 29th of the past month of September in the afternoon From the Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of November 1739. in the afternoon sailed out of sight, and that thereupon, not being able to follow the same, he had had to turn the prow hither. There also returned hither on the 15th of that month of October the hooker De Hector, which, both through foggy weather and contrary winds, was not able to reach Mossel Bay until after the departure of the ship Oostrust. Meanwhile, on the 19th thereafter, we received again the missive, attached hereto in copy, written to us by the officers of the oft-mentioned ship Oostrust under date of the 17th ditto prior, whereby they make known that on the 10th of the aforesaid month of October, and thus the day after the departure of our previously mentioned writing, which consequently could not be received by them, having advanced out of St. Helena Bay as far as Dassen Island, they had found themselves forced by rising contrary winds to set their course for Saldanha Bay, where they had safely arrived on the said 17th of October; From the Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of November 1734. and that they further referred, concerning the condition of their ship, to that which the master of the shipwrights, Barend van Dockum, who was to come up by the overland route, would report to us on that account; adding, however, that they had noticed that the same had become weaker day by day after their departure from Mossel Bay. From Cape of Good Hope, the 2nd of November 1739 Master of the Yard Barend van Dockum, as well as the Master of the Equippage Jacobus Moller, maintained that the vessel would be able to come up here without difficulty to obtain some relief, and they departed from there. That on the occasion when they were overtaken at sea by heavy winds and storms, he, Master of the Yard van Dockum, paying close attention to the condition of the ship and how it fared at sea, found that the transom knees were sliding and loose at their bolts. That lower down, the transoms and the fashion piece, together with the scarfs of the sternson timbers as well as their bolts, were all loose and working. Furthermore, that the stern throughout its whole body was in motion, and that on the starboard side from aft up to the coxswain's port in the sheer strake, the bolts in the ports were all loose and working, and likewise on the larboard side, though not so severely. And lastly, that notwithstanding the heavy laboring of this vessel, whereby the seams in the stern—which had been properly caulked in Mossel Bay—opened up, it nevertheless took in no more than an inch of water in twenty-four hours, more or less, at the forward pumps than in the aforementioned Mossel Bay; so that he, Master of the Yard van Dockum, determined that although this ship Oostrust was in a weak condition, it could nevertheless come up from Saldanha to this bay without difficulty. From Cape of Good Hope, the 18th of November 1739 We hope that our letter, which we have had the honor to be able to send to your Right Honorable Worships to communicate our arrival in Saint Helena Bay, will soon and safely be received. Presently, we shall therefore only inform your Right Honorable Worships by this that on Saturday the 10th, when the wind was favorable to us, we weighed our anchors there and put to sea; when every effort was made to head for the Roads of Cape of Good Hope, as we also found ourselves as far as below Dassen Island, yet being held back again by the shift of the wind we had to reverse our course, and by God's goodness have come to anchor here in Saldanha Bay on the 17th of this month. We shall not undertake in this, Right Honorable, Wise, and Very Prudent Sir, the state of our vessel From Cape of Good Hope, dated the 8th of November 1739 to write extensively of the state of our vessel, as the master of the shipwrights, Barend van Dockum, coming overland, will be able to report to your Right Honorable Worships in detail and clearly by word of mouth; we merely wish to mention that we have been able to observe since our departure from Mossel Bay that our vessel has daily grown weaker. The Hector not being present, and the entire ship's council having convened on the aforementioned vessel Oostrust, and having been convinced beforehand by the most meticulous inspection as far as the opportunity allowed that the aforementioned vessel is in no condition to continue the voyage to Batavia, but that the same could nevertheless be brought into such a state here, through the repairs that are possible to perform on it, that the aforementioned vessel could, with God's blessing, reach the roadstead of Cape of Good Hope, all clearly according to attestations of the same date as this; therefore, having maturely considered everything that was deemed to be of the greatest use, benefit, and service to the Noble Company, it was thought fit and resolved to make a beginning immediately and with all speed on the repair of the aforementioned vessel Oostrust, and thereafter to undertake the voyage to Cape of Good Hope, while by the 41 From Cape of Good Hope dated 2 November 1739. one and presently available hoy, the Termijen, must be taken in the artillery and money chests up to ten, and one small box marked 523 according to the stowage list containing gold and silver thread, in order in such a manner to afford as much relief to the vessel as can be done, but in case the still absent hoy, the Hector, should appear here before our departure, the same shall take over half of the money chests and other goods that are judged serviceable to be unloaded or transferred for the further relief of the ship. From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November 1739 presently departs thither with Adrichem, also to the minister who remained behind here from the ship Oostrust, Minister Johan Philips Smit, to whom, upon his request made in this regard, we have likewise permitted that his wife, Johanna Constantia Phijl, whom he also married at this place, may sail across together with him, in the hope and expectation that all this may not appear displeasing to Your Right Honorable Lordships. And as by the seamen and shipwrights appointed as commissioners for the inspection of the ship Oostrust, a duly verified and sworn statement of their findings has now been issued, we take the liberty to present the same to Your Right Honorable Lordships in authentic copy herewith, from which it will please Your Right Honorable Lordships to observe that said commissioners, having inspected that ship Oostrust with all possible accuracy, discovered after their examination that this vessel, even here at the roads when rolling and laboring, is somewhat in such working and condition as the master shipwright Barend van Dockum, returning at sea therewith from Mossel Bay, found to occur, just as we have already had the honor to set down in our aforesaid earlier letter; likewise furthermore that 'tween decks behind the mainmast, several beams in their dovetails, which join into the ceiling planks, are decayed and completely rotted; that also all the beams behind the aforesaid mainmast are working, which can be seen by the shifting of the beam knees; and likewise that the aforesaid beams have sagged downward by a good inch and a half, more or less, from the water-ways; likewise that the beam-shelves in many places are not only in a very poor condition, but also almost all decayed or rotted, and that to such an extent that the same beam-shelves have yielded inward past the stanchions or frames, though nevertheless the fore-ship 'tween decks was in good condition; that also, although the beams lying in the hold throughout the entire hold are somewhat and well joined, one could nevertheless see by the newly fitted shores that the ship is also working there, as the water comes seeping down along the bolts, and that in addition the water-way is also in such a condition, which clearly indicates in what a weak state that ship is found to be; that furthermore all the beams in the cabin, upon the laboring of the ship, are moving out of and into their ceiling planks, such that it is to be presumed that their dovetails must be decayed, the more so because the beam knees further indicate this, and that the counter has also sunk downward toward the rear; besides which the deck knees, which under the quarterdeck have parted from the beams through age, lift the deck clamps when the ship heels over, which is a clear sign that the beams lying there will likewise be decayed, the more so because the bolts therein were found to have worked loose, of which deck knees also three are broken straight through the middle; that whenever the ship comes to roll, the cabins and the entire bulwark of the quarterdeck move back and forth; that because the filling-pieces in the broad strake had worked themselves out at sea, and also that outboard behind the mainmast many bolts are working outward, the commissioners, for a better inspection of that defect, had three filling-pieces removed from the broad strake, whereupon it was discovered that the aforesaid stanchions or frames, as far as one could see, are rotted and decayed for quite three quarters of the ports, as are also the stanchions or frames of such ports, which are moreover broken straight across; that the sternposts are also working looser, and likewise that the deck pieces of the transom are similarly shifting and working downward; that above all this, there is still a heavy leak in the peak, which according to the testimony of the officers of that vessel was only discovered after their departure from these roads, and which could by no possibility be reached here at this place because it is located near the junction of the transom, which stands at about 40 from the keel; for which reasons, and also in view of the fact that this ship, notwithstanding this, is in such bad condition that it will have to be condemned here, the commissioners judged it unnecessary to detain themselves further with the inspection and searching of and after that leak, which could not have been repaired here anyway; and lastly, that they all unanimously come to judge that the aforesaid ship Oostrust, on account of the aforesaid heavy and great defects found upon it, as well as because, through the rotting of its frames, even if one had at hand here the materials required for it, no further strength can be given to it, cannot possibly be repaired at this place, and still less be put in a condition to pass south going from here to Batavia without exposing the people sailing aboard to extreme danger of their lives; and that the commissioners are firmly of the opinion that this vessel will have to be condemned and broken up at this place, the more so as all the shipwrights who were appointed further confirmed this.
