From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 regarding entering into a contract to obtain a new raqam or the renewal of the old prorogative, whether one might not and ought to solicit the powerful aid of the Beglerbegi in his presence, in order to afford our people in Isfahan a better standing with their petition before the Viceroy so that it might succeed as desired, especially if the Beglerbegi might perhaps be left in his power and instructed to show that he knows how to compensate the Company for so many loyal services rendered to the realm and to him, although mostly forced, in a feasible and least damaging manner concerning His Majesty's treasury; since one has always been of the opinion, and it still accords with the same sound reasons, that His Majesty and also the said Beglerbegi will not easily want to hear of a cash restitution in this time of war, and even though we do not yet know what apostil to our last petition presented From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. presented to the monarch will be brought back from His Highness, nevertheless, in the event of receiving a doubtful reply, God grant on the contrary that we may hear an absolute approval to satisfy our heartfelt prayer, the solicitation here with the Beglerbegi to obtain those funds cleared against accounts would always promise more advantage than disadvantage, in case His Highness might refer us to the above-mentioned Vali Ahd. From Persia, under date 14 May 1739. to double, and this will be enough to arrive at Bassoura, where we shall give precedence to the repeated request of Mr. van Suchtelen, in order to accommodate him somewhat regarding what was already cited in this respect at the session of the 4th of this month and, according to own experience, exists in reason and truth, being the motive why it has also been thought fit to grant the same a place here verbatim, in the following manner: van Suchtelen humbly requests: 1. to still be allowed to enjoy the native servants for 30 tomans instead of the washerman, and as appears from the year 1691 in September, one company servant according to old previous practices, together with bringing up the extraordinary expenses in such manner as they are disbursed at Bassoura at times and occurrences, and specifically the barley meal that is given in the drinking water, and clover that is provided among the straw to the horses, as is also customary here, at Spahan, and Boucher. The return of the Beylerbey Mahomet Tacki Chan, who is expected in 3 to 4 days, causes us anew fear and hope; partly because this unreasonable person currently possesses the Royal Favor to a wider degree than ever before and still holds a despotic power over us, partly because we trust that acknowledgment of the services rendered to the Crown has been obtained by him from the King, as well as a good apostille on our petition concerning the restitution of the court debt. Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. debt will have been obtained, but since the outcome of the latter still remains hidden and dependent on time, we shall have to console ourselves with much impatience until his arrival, and in the meantime have the Company's garden, the Narbanong, wherein he wishes to give himself a pleasant diversion, tidied up a bit; but considering that the reception of such grandees is customary and necessary, it is likewise deemed unavoidable and suitable with the Company's respect to greet that Chan under the firing of some small pieces planted there, according to ancient custom, and in case of a civil reception, to foster mutual inclination in the interest of the Company's affairs in general, subsequently to entertain him with a pilaf, so far as honor and economy on the one hand, as well as the country's custom and his character on the other hand, will permit; although Mr. Berckhijk does not concur therewith, From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. because, beyond the voluntary gifts, troublesome requests will certainly not be lacking. The placard or warning resolved in the meeting of the Lords Seventeen in Middelburg against the smuggling of the great quantity of ducatoons and further private trade has been published by the fiscal and commissioners, both on shore and on the ships lying here in the roads, on the 5th of this month, and affixed where it belongs; nor shall it be neglected to execute what one is ordered to do in that regard upon their departure. Humbly petition regarding this, in a manner equally done concerning the gift to be presented tomorrow, being the Nowruz festival, in view of the Honorable Administrator, by order of His Highness, through Mirza Abol Hassan, having been invited with all the others as a guest thereto, but it being also unavoidable to withhold anything from the regents, which they, relying on ancient usages, set forth with a firm law virtually in the treaty, the said Honorable Administrator himself intending to draft the proposal of what is to be delivered, in order to present it at the next meeting. And whereas His Highness aforementioned has today received a courier from the Viceroy, with news of his indisposition in one leg and a further request that a good surgeon might be sent to Mashhad at the King's expense, in order, if possible, to cure him thereof, so one has on that account likewise 209 From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 likewise been able to do nothing else than to grant this urgent and delicate request, in the hope of seeing, through this evident token of friendship, all other faithful services rendered to the realm rewarded much sooner, and specifically our wish regarding the trade in silk fulfilled according to the old footing; further, the head surgeon of the yacht Binnewijsend, named Nicolaas Heezelman of Alkmaar, was appointed to that expedition by unanimous vote, who, being provided with the required medications according to capability, and as time permits, shall be dispatched thither in the company of someone who is master of both languages; while the head surgeon of the Hof Niet Altijd Zomer, Jacob Michiel Kornman, shall cross over to take his place thereon, and the under-surgeon of this ship, Jan Jurgen Crats of Saxony, goes ashore From Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739 to this coast to replace the assistant surgeon Jean Dorn, who, as a capable instrument, has again been promoted to head surgeon on the just-cited vessel, and with a half-raise in wages according to the regulations, has been increased to 24 guilders per month in order to serve out his current contract therefor; so also in this session, the assistant Gerrit Samuel Cas of Batavia, on account of the expiration of his time, humbly petitioned for the capacity and wage of bookkeeper, and considering that he is of a quiet and sober conduct, and furthermore performs his assigned duties with diligence and vigilance, it was approved to condescend to his request, and to grant him, along with the status of Bookkeeper, 30 guilders per month, entering today into a new contract of three years; while furthermore, in place of the recently degraded soldier Jacobus Koebou of Königsberg, the sailor Christiaan Nonnenkamp of Hamburg was, upon his humble petition, relieved from the crew of the ship Het Hof Niet Altijd Zomer and enlisted into the military service on his current contract, and this at 9 guilders per month or the same wage as he runs on the books. Concerning the persons still living who sat as judges over the pronounced sentences of deportation and the degradation of the reinstated Junior Merchants Nicolaas Duijt, Cornelis van Rhee, and Jan Willem Schultsz, notice has been given how, pursuant to the highly respected order of Their High Excellencies at Batavia, it has been resolved and decreed by Your Honours to charge each for their share on their pay accounts for as much as the reimbursement of monies as well as the trial expenses and suspended monthly wages of the said three persons amount to, over and regarding the matter that the aforesaid colleagues, according to the submitted written report of the Advocate Fiscal of the Indies dated 30 September of the past year, were said to have behaved passionately and partially in the said proceedings, and moreover to have charged against the aforesaid Duijt, for the deed, a trumped-up, fabricated Crimen Falsi, etcetera; and since each of us, without exception as far as he is concerned, still believes and simultaneously maintains that one worked and passed sentence according to conscience over their wicked deeds, but by no means deserved such detestable and defamatory assessments as are expressed herebefore, therefore the aforesaid judges consider themselves extremely obliged hereby to request that the papers filed in that case, together with the said report, may be placed for further review into the hands of impartial and honest persons, for the drafting of such an unblemished report as the findings of the facts shall require, in order to be inserted word for word and sent forward with the Company's letter by the first departing ship, along with our further declaration then to be made in that regard, both for the further disposition of Their well-mentioned High Excellencies and especially for their reassurance and to demonstrate that justice has been spoken; we must, however, express in passing our astonishment that the Advocate Fiscal proves his assertion with nothing, and makes it good even less; and although the held proceedings were not conducted according to the common course and custom, we nevertheless cannot comprehend nor establish that the same ought therefore to be held as null and void, as the Advocate Fiscal is of the opinion, considering that this by no means excuses the committed rogueries, and ergo does not soften the punishments of the crimes either; and how can that also be demanded so completely from people who have not been professors of law, and in all likelihood never will be? Now His Honour comes forward with an item and says the documents should have been verified to be held valid in the presence of the parties, against which the Persian judges could well mention, and are also obliged to put forward, what more can be claimed than voluntary confessions of the delinquents themselves, which indeed must be held in law as the most powerful and conclusive; and can any person on the entire earth with reason regard or hold otherwise the begging of forgiveness done on bare knees by the mad Schultsz, as well as the confession by the malicious and false Duijt in full council? Furthermore, the trial of Duijt had to be determined here according to the order, and not sent over to the disposition of Their High Excellencies on this and that obstructive pretext; as far as this is concerned, it cannot be denied, because that order was fully known to the aforesaid council and has not escaped memory to this day; but the offense of Duijt was too gross, and the punishment that therefore had to be applied to him was found to be somewhat severe, and caused some timidity in some members, and particularly in those who, so to speak, had very little knowledge of legal matters and whose sentiments according to conscience and best knowledge were solely that they lacked the capacity to support it with sound reasons; and when such persons constitute the majority of votes, one must indeed proceed to that, and what can anyone do against it who is of a contrary opinion, and by whom the same honored order was also disclosed and demonstrated at that time, conform the tenor of a deduction applied by the Commander mentioned in the heading in reply to the humble request of this council, and of which the copy dated 10 November 1737 is also to be found among the forwarded trial documents. Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. funds in discount were sufficiently adequate to serve as payment, and in order to assist the fair requests in obtaining their due, it was also reasonably resolved to cause the petitioner to be reimbursed by warrant for that which he had already advanced out of his own pocket up to the sum of 28 mamoodies by the end of last February and counted into the treasury, provided that the deceased's death-account is again debited for those moneys. In continuation of domestic matters, it was also noted herein that the Honorable Mr. van Suchtelen yesterday, following the long-established order in the required form, transferred to his successor Simon Clement not only the main administration, the state of the treasury, and its keys, but also the presidency in the Judicial College, without the least difficulty being observed between the one and the other; the last-mentioned gentleman shall furthermore continue to function in the office of Persia under date 14 May Anno 1739. From Persia, dated 14 May Anno 1739 with preserves externally in good condition, and sealed with the seal of the Honorable Company, but upon opening mostly without syrup and half or more or less empty, likewise some sourish, and the calamus entirely spoiled; so that the same could not be remedied and salvaged other than by boiling up and adding fresh candy syrup. The Radix China for presentation, which consisted of 70 lb, was inspected by the head surgeons Johannes Cobbing, Jan Michiel Komman, and Jean Dorn, and sorted into the following 3 sorts, namely: 18½ lb good . . . . . . 18½ lb middling - - - Radix China 7 lb entirely consumed by the worm 44 lb together shows a loss of 26 lb, making again 70 lb as stated above, the good and middling being repacked in 30 lb powdered sugar to prevent further decay.
