In compliance with Your Honors' highly esteemed orders, the bookkeeper and former Basra storekeeper Willem Slaars went to the Persian army, encamped just outside the walls of this city and commanded by the Generalissimo Mhamed Tacki Chan, to inspect whether there might be found among those troops a handsome stallion suitable for the stud farm; whereupon, having done his utmost, he found a Karstacque brown one with 2 black forefeet and 2 white hindfeet, also a black mane and tail, as well as a white blaze on the forehead, 3 years old, 19 and a quarter English hands high, and, having estimated it as suitable, for a sum of 15 to 16 thomans, for which latter mentioned amount he bought the same with Your Honors' approval. underneath was written: With which, Honorable, Commanding Lord and Honorable Gentlemen, he hopes to have fulfilled this assigned commission to Your Honors' satisfaction, remaining with high esteem and deep respect. lower: Your Honors' obedient and humble servant. Whereas, due to the death yesterday of Matthijs Mijster, the position of chief mate on the ship 't Hof niet altijd Somer has fallen vacant, and a capable and vigilant person in his place being exceedingly necessary, in consideration that the ship has already been lent for the service of the Crown and is now almost ready to sail, destined to turn its course to Diuel; therefore, by a majority of votes from the available seafarers, the fully qualified second mate Jan Christoffel Tiede was appointed thereto, because the members Berg Eijck, Crap, Schemming, Terre, and Jongstal maintained their stance on that choice, and demonstrated with sound reasons how Tiede had previously filled that position during the indisposition of Mijster, as well as having served in navigation from his youth in several lower capacities, and thus in all likelihood had also acquired the required knowledge through experience, not to mention the good testimony which his skipper Jan Martensz came to give on his behalf, and the injustice that would be done to him if this election were denied him, and he consequently would have to miss out at a time when the latter was less appropriate than his promotion, considering that this vacancy arose at this man's assigned post, and furthermore, without rightful prejudice to others, this solace is due to him with all lawfulness. From Persia under date 25 December 1739. by the Honorable Administrator of the aforementioned side and his colleagues Van Der Horst, Bouman, and Nagtegaal cast their eye upon this latter, in case he, upon examination by the ship officers present, was found endowed with equivalent subtleties and further necessary seamanship as Tiede, considering that he, Nagtegaal, though taken from aboard the Binnenwijzent, where he belongs, came to these lands as third mate, and Skipper Jan De Zee, as well as the Honorable De Haan, likewise reported nothing but good things about him; also mentioning how Tiede, on the contrary, had only sailed out as gunner at 22 florins and had only a few months ago obtained the pilotship and 32 florins per month; but since the proposal just cited was not accepted, and likewise because the said Honorable Administrator did not agree with the draft of the five other councilors either, the majority persisted, and it was furthermore resolved to advance the assistant surgeon Frans Verstraten of Amsterdam, according to the tenor of his submitted petition, but especially because he has for a long time performed the service of upper and assistant surgeon on the Hoff Niet Altijd Somer to satisfaction, from 24 florins to surgeon at 30 florins per month, under a new three-year contract commencing today, while Hendrik Pietersz of Hamburg, earning 12 florins, will step up to boatswain's mate at 13 florins or with halving, and will be replaced in his served quartermaster's post by the sailor Evert Graan of Stockholm, who instead of 10 florins is now granted 12 florins per month because his current contract was likewise found not to have expired; but the fellow ditto Jan Godlieb Visser of Hamburg transfers to the position of ship's corporal with an allowance of 22 florins per month, considering his contracted time is also far from expired and he came to serve in India at 9 florins; and from the Binnenwijzent it is understood to draft six sailors, along with six Buginese or black soldiers, because they can be spared there and will be employed on the Hoff Niet Altijd Somer, considering that ship has quite ample need of that crew for the performance of service. Whereas it has pleased the agreeable will of God to tear away the junior merchant and head of Isfahan, the Honorable Mattheus van Leijpzigh, on 12 November last from this temporal life, and thus to relieve him of worldly burdens, as well as to take him to Himself into His eternal glory, in accordance with that which is described in that regard in the Company's general letter addressed to this Council one day later by the second-in-command there, Pieter Aalmis, and received here yesterday; whereabout, after offering of prayer, deliberations were held with attention, and, upon the proposal of the Honorable Commander, was considered necessary by the members Clement, De Haan, Berg, Eyck, and Carelsz, and also decided at the same time upon that footing by a majority of votes, to provisionally elect in the place of Van Leijpzigh as head, and to let the management of the Company's business in general, together with and alongside the interpreter Elias Sahid, Resolution Taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron 430 From Persia under date 25 December 1739. be promoted and directed, by and on behalf of the person of Pieter Aalmis, until his promised writings in response to our letters have arrived, and at the same time it will be seen how he gives satisfaction thereto, as well as upon the arrival of the expected Batavia ships it will become known what disposition Their High Excellencies will have taken, both in respect of the relief requested by the deceased, as well as concerning our respectfully presented consideration regarding the ordered, but by us for good reasons suspended until further orders, Persian silk trade, and also because the lifting of that trading post is not to be undertaken without great reflection and outcry, and likewise because the continuation mostly agrees with various orders, over and above the misfortunes which would befall those who were ordered to undertake the retreat at this time, both through the abundance of the snow that has already fallen and is still to fall, and the flooding of the rivers to be found on the road, and especially when, to observe brevity, one seeks by preference to pass that of Couristhoen, for the reason that the bridge formerly lying across it has now become entirely ruined and unusable through age; whereas the members Crap, Schemming, Terre, and Jongstal on the other hand opined that the trading post with its 431 From Persia under date 25 December 1739. appurtenances and dependencies ought to be broken up, or else another capable person, versed in the language and the country's manners, ought to be elected as commissioner or as head, not only on the grounds of the first two mentioned that Aalmis does not in any way possess the requisite knowledge for that purpose, and thus neither in the one nor the other, considering that he accounts not the slightest bit for the trade books, indeed not even concerning the state of the cash, though such must be regarded as the soul of the business, or that it seemed to be finally contrary to the given orders of the lords principals, nor also for reasons that Isfahan could not be regarded as other than a yearly, unnecessary, considerable burden, since the court holds no domicile there, but the extorting of gifts maintains its course quite intolerably; likewise also not from the view that he alone could impossibly keep the work going or properly unravel the confused and precarious state of the realm as required, but indeed in view of the avoidance of such gruesome extortions as took place in the year 1723, or in two different instances up to f1028125:—:—, at the time when that royal and now entirely destroyed and deplorably worthy city was forced to submit for a time under the yoke of Afghan rule through 432 From Persia under date 25 December 1739. a siege of about 3 years; and if the current rumor here, which was confirmed from Surat on 25 November last, contains the truth, namely that the usurper has continued his return journey to Persia up to the river Attock, where a strong resistance of Pathans has hitherto prevented his crossing, then one need have the least illusion that a better fate will befall the General Company, since the greatest regents are also the greatest rabble, and hitherto the most cunning and refined scoundrels; and that the road to Isfahan should be covered with such an abundance of snow that some might happen to get stuck in it, such seems may be regarded as a possible occurrence, when on the other hand one reflects how the Company's caravan, at the departure of the said letter, still remained there, and was at that time not even made ready, and consequently had also not been dispatched up to that time, so the contrary, or at least not such a bad condition will appear as is contained in the supposition, because it must also through the same [illegible] over the left estate and goods, also private papers of the deceased now also

469 Persia, dated 25 December 1739 From ... but another brown ditto assessed for Your Right Honourable Government at 2,600 mamudis, or 1,105:—:— guilders, which we have the honour to offer by the bearer of this letter, it being properly provided for two and a half months with straw, barley, etcetera, for most obedient notification. Regarding the horse of which mention was made in our latest writing as being of too poor a quality to serve as a royal present, we thought it best for now to keep it a little longer to see whether it will not change for the better. No diligence has been spared on our part to discover whether among all the horses that have arrived here with Mamed Tackie Chan's army there was not one to be found that could serve the purpose. But all our effort has been in vain, as we have not been able to find so fine a mount as is truly required for that purpose. From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 However, there was purchased here on 13 November for 1,600 mamudis, or 660 guilders, a good, strong chestnut brown stallion, suitable for the stud farm, aged 3 to 3½ years, 14½ English hands high, without any blemishes. This we shall take the liberty to offer to Your Right Honourable by the first ship departing from here. In the meantime, all possible means will be employed to obtain a royal mount, so as to satisfy Your Right Honourable's honoured demand dated 21 August 1737. The scarcity and dearness of these mounts originates from the all-devouring and still continuing war, and God knows when it will truly cease, and these lands will rejoice in sweet peace; at least according to our humble opinion there is for now very little hope of that. As Your Right Honourable may, if it please you, observe from our most humble advice of today's date, addressed in humility to Their 471 From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 High Right Honourable, the Supreme Government of the Indies at Batavia, a copy of which we take the liberty respectfully to offer herewith to Your Right Honourable, and to which we obediently refer to avoid prolixity. Beside our humble report cited above, we promised Your Right Honourable to make known in the next letter the final outcome of the requested small gowns. But to our sorrow, this again cannot take effect according to our wishes. However, it is done as closely as possible by sending an extract from the answered demand made hither by the ministers of Spahan on 30 June 1739, to which we obligingly refer, as we have not received any further reports concerning it up to now. But to our soul's grief, From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 on 28 November the death of the head of Spahan, the Honorable Mattheus van Lijpsigh, was communicated to us by the second in charge there, Pieter Aalmis. Thus, through the demise of the said old, experienced servant, the purchase of the small gowns may perhaps not succeed as well now as is stated in that document. Notwithstanding this, we shall not fail to keep its care highly recommended to the provisional resident. The garden seeds for Your Right Honourable Government, together with various other goods ordered from there, are expected, and these are to reach Your Right Honourable on a further occasion. Furthermore, Your Right Honourable receives by the bearer of this letter all that was missing from your recently made petition of 30 November of the past year, consisting of: 10 cases, 200 lb. of hard almonds, and 100 From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 173 100 lb. of raisins. From Persia, dated 25 December 1739. could have obtained their order fresh. Regarding Your Honors' recently made demand for such fruits, we recommended two days after receipt to the Isfahan residents for procurement the 120 lb soft-shell almonds and 100 lb pistachios mentioned therein. The other assortments we shall gladly attend to as the occasion arises by having fresh goods procured, rather than having anything thereof bought earlier, which would only spoil and cause damage if their shipment did not succeed. For the civil allotment of the demanded sample linens, we are very obliged to Your Honors. On 11 April last, we sent to Boucher and Bassoura, as well as to Isfahan on the 4th of this month, a few pieces of each for examination. Here, too, no effort was spared to look out for their sale, but so far we have not been so fortunate From Persia, dated 25 December 1739. as to be enticed by a favorable offer to increase an order at present; and therefore we shall have to wait for a better time, as well as the sentiments of the ministers of the said places, in order to contribute more soundly to that highly esteemed objective of Your Honors' satisfaction. We cannot fail, therefore, to express our obliged thanks herewith for Your Honors' kind dispatch, with the heartfelt wish that soon the Good Hope from the West Coast and the Tuticorin trader may be fulfilled through a fortunate arrival with the remaining considerable capital of roughly 6 tons of treasure, and all embarrassment overcome. On account of all this, it was then deemed best at the session of 23 April of this year, for the greatest well-being of our noble lords and masters, to authorize the said ministers for the future to petition their needed Bengali assortments directly from the merchant of Your Honorable Worships by an immediate opportunity, consequently sending herewith to the said residents also our remaining stocks that were still found on the 11th of this month, item in copy the triplicate demand of 16 July 1737, which at that time was deemed necessary, as well as that which we subsequently found serviceable to reiterate on 22 April of the following year and 23 of the just-mentioned month in the year before, thinking with the receipt of what is expected, as stated, and what has already 487. From Persia under date 25 December 1739 already been contracted for, that matters can be kept going reasonably well. And therefore, taking the liberty of your favorable interpretation, we hereby very humbly request Your Honorable Worships to be pleased, according to what the circumstance and state of affairs will permit, to accept and fulfill the petitions to be made by the said ministers as if they had originated from us, trusting that through this, great tranquility will be found in the future, since one on the spot cannot judge as well regarding the consumption of the wares over there as they themselves can; consequently also not what is most in demand, and likewise at times not even what remains after sales are made, before their reports and annual books have been delivered on the spot. Continually desiring the best thereof, we have the honor to accompany this with our humble detailed report respectfully submitted on 14 May last via the small ship the Anthoma by way of Tuticorin to Their Excellencies the Supreme Indian Government at Batavia, and to which we very amiably refer ourselves regarding the trade as well as the affairs of the realm, with the accompanying events since our last of 25 February truly mentioned before. In continuation of this, we consider ourselves greatly obligated to thank Your Honorable Worships very heartily for the care exercised in Patna, according to the copy received from the ministers dated 19 December 1738, regarding the turnover, after some debated meetings on two occasions with the buyer of the auripigmentum, mastix, and tutia, calculating one against the other with a profit of up to Current Rupees 32½, 39, 189 From Persia under date 25 December 1739 39, and 113½ percent, in such manner as was shown by the said missives of 30 November and 10 January. The power of the grandees only serves to extract cash from what remaining impoverished families have still been able, through sorrow and cunning, to gather and conceal from the tyrannical treatments of the governors. Saying From Persia under date 25 December 1734 this only because peace has been lacking enough for everyone, without exception of any nation, and added to this the terror to which the merchant has uniformly been subjected as long as Rahmat Taqi Khan held great power. Concerning trade in general, for about 3 years now one has many times been able to observe the most prudent considered person and merchant to be nearly desperate, except our British competitors, since they here with better intent than the goods described in Patna's agreeable report following that course; apparently the French nation will withdraw theirs from Basra, so that even Aleppine advices have produced a final decision of both the ruin of their trade and themselves. And how here with Monsieur Beaumont, his trade and establishment, residence or office, of which one is assured that he will proceed as chief, will fare, is still too immature to rightly deduce from the progress of his affairs. He has nevertheless been civilly received as chief by the governors and on the contrary regarded with all public decency, but has not yet been in person to our neighbors (the English Agent Mr. Decker passed away on the first of June, and Mr. Whitwell is to fill his place from Basra) or to us, having brought such goods here and already sold them, both what and how as the accompanying daily journal extract shows. Concerning the news of the Persian King, after the dispatch of the said Antonia, we were informed by the Surat ministry, just four days before the receipt of your Honors' agreeable dispatch of the 1st of April of this year, that His Majesty already in the month of March, in Delhi and just before the closing of the Surat advices of the Mughal Empire, was proclaimed as King under the title Nadir Shah by beat of drum. What joy has been celebrated in this empire over that uncommon fortune an accompanying extract from Isfahan letters will teach, if it please you, there being further brought under their numbers in the register some further news, which we also transmit herewith for your Honors' speculation. The Hindustani situation is truly to be pitied and quite rightly considered by your Honors. From Persia, under date 25 December 1739 It would be much better had that conqueror remained attending to his own realms and vassals. If it is rumored, he is not yet satisfied and wishes to pay a visit via Suratta with 300 capital vessels to Jeddah and Mecca as well, but the native himself still opines that he will return. Yet what is finally to be expected of it must be left further to time to uncover. In the meantime, it can well be measured what terrible consternation and damage that monarch must have caused everywhere in your Honors' regions through his army, and that trade will undoubtedly suffer much, being through such invasions and revolutions of empires—whereof the formerly flourishing Persian region in only a few years has, as it were, had to provide the tragic mirror for the whole world—nothing but a miserable life and misfortune to be assumed in consequences. This empire, as already said in some measure as aforementioned, is still by no means free, and according to the present prospect can very suddenly be brought back to a bloodbath by a single powerful rebel, let alone if something human were to happen to the new Mughal or even merely the viceroy, still lying sick at Mashhad. God Almighty may therefore graciously dispose everything for the best and preserve your Honors alongside the precious state everywhere of the General Honorable Company through His unfailing loving-kindness, so that the same may flourish ever more and more.
