Seeing that there is once again an opportunity to write to your Honors, there goes herewith the copy of the resolution extracted in this matter, according to promises made, adhering to which enclosures we shall presently further report that we have not been informed with a single letter of writing by the English chief, nor via Bouchier, how matters there in general have occurred since Binnewijsend's dispatch, and for those reasons we look forward to your Honors' reports and trade books in order to be able to make an end by closing ours, it being furthermore mandated never to neglect upon occasion to advise us briefly of the state of affairs there. Honorable, pious, discreet, Since we have successively been informed by the advices from Bushehr of the good delivery of our advices dated 24 September and the ultimate of October last, sent via the overland route, we shall, through that reassurance, merely let this accompany the copy of what was feasible to write on 28 November thereafter given the shortness of time, and to which we refer ourselves, not doubting that the safe arrival of the Binnewijsend will be established thereby. Your Honors letters dated 5 September and 10 October of the current year were, together with the trade books from there enclosed with the last mentioned and other writings for the main office Gamron, all according to the dictates of the register accompanying them, duly delivered to me at successive times, namely the first on 20 September and the last on 20 October following, by a small native prahu. And since I am now proceeding to reply thereto as briefly as possible on the departure of that same small vessel, nevertheless on account of my severe indisposition, it serves first of all that I consider myself very much obliged for the kind remembrance of the former head there, the Honorable Mr. George Gutchi, and his second, Mr. De Haan, expressed therein in my regard; while I, for my part, in response to Your Honors humble offer, shall also show myself very willing to maintain such a friendly correspondence as is necessarily required for the greatest benefit of the Company and has always been practiced in the times of Your Honors predecessors. From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 may be validated, and as such remain written off to the profit and loss account, as also the payment of 8 expired months of house rent at 70 tomans annually, or 583 1/3 mamudis per month, for which 4667 mamudis has been taken in total, as from the first of September of the past year until the time of ownership or the last of April last, we have owed that payment. Subsequently, the outgoing first resident George Gutchi begs, with the utmost submission, that Your Honours may further please to look with a favorable and compassionate eye upon his forced disclosure, a matter to which pure poverty now compels him to take recourse, and this principally because he has now been obliged to deliver a general and accurate transfer of the treasury etc. to his successor, the Honorable Mr. van Suchtelen, and in reality the same fell short by an amount of 18514 mamudis or 7868 guilders and 9 stuivers, From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 arising from a sale made of 1035 1/2 ells of narrow-list cloth to four Turkish merchants named Hajji Johaar, Mosem Chelebi, Isouff Chelebi, and Seyyid Goloem Hajji, at 20 mamudis or 8 guilders and 16 stuivers the ell; however, since the first two had ceded their competent portion to these latter two partners shortly after the agreement was concluded for a small profit, and for that reason the mentioned two latter merchants, Isouff and Seyyid, remained responsible for the entire amount of 20710 mamudis or 8801 guilders and 15 stuivers, or each for his received share, to come and pay us the principal sum at the first opportunity without stipulation of time, as the market had been entered for cash money; but alas, misfortune intending to strike those people and us at the same time, it arose most deplorably from a war begun by Mimies Pasha with the desert Arabs, in which virtually the full number From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 of the pasha's troops were struck down and taken prisoner, a large part of them having gone into battle with the said cloth sold by us on their bodies, so that that fatal defeat deprived the said cloth merchants of their payment and consequently left them unable to maintain these outstanding debts, whereby he, Gutchi, finally and after Isouff had paid off a small sum of 2196 mamudis on his portion, was indeed forced to let himself be satisfied for the time being with such bonds as of which the native copies and those of the translations are annexed here under No. 10 for inspection. Now it is indeed true that the sale of those cloths under the last of December 1734 was indeed entered into the books as for cash in the trade journal page 7, and the treasury was credited therewith, but it is also at the same time certain that he, Gutchi, trusted nothing other than From Persia, dated 25 December 1739 that the payment of the sale was to follow daily in full or in part, as at that time nothing was less suspected than a war, for which no appearance or reason had arisen. Java, as the latter was entirely rejected, but the former was still considered somewhat usable, especially, we believe, to blend with Mocha coffee, and in doing so still make it marketable in case its prices should differ very much from the same and accordingly some profit might be calculated thereon. Thus we shall have to ascertain whether, in the event of any scarcity of Mocha coffee, ours will in time still find a market, toward which we shall incessantly endeavor to apply our humble mercantile acumen. Turmeric and ginger, being two drugs that are brought here in sufficient abundance by the Muscatters and Duveliers, will also bring very little profit to the Honorable Company locally, seeing that we had to dispose of the first sort at 18 mahmudis, or f 7:13, with 62 raym per cento, and the other at 12 mahmudis, or f 6.2 and 60 1/3 shahis per hundred; and this From Persia, under date 25 December 1739. because we had great reason to fear they were about to decay completely, just as they had already become somewhat heavily infested. From Persia, under date 25 December 1739. to be willing to justify this undertaking and to be so good as to ascertain whether those goods can still be converted there in a tolerable manner, in order to prevent a total loss. The rate of exchange for coin species in this place is and remains of so little circulation that we have no choice to make in preferring one sort over another, considering that for a considerable time now nothing else has circulated in trade than the well-known Turkish money or the piasters and shalots for the prices fixed upon them; except for that previously mentioned difference of 1 to 1½ per cent discount for current payments or the private exchange rate; and notwithstanding that so harmful a servitude now seems to have forced its way among the merchants almost as a lawful practice, we have nevertheless never allowed ourselves to be brought to submit to it, but have always perseveringly continued to have our sold goods paid for in ready money without any deduction. 767 From Persia under date 25 December 1739 Since all of this could not possibly be carried out in a short time, nor could the contents of the cash register according to that account be handed over immediately, because a great deal of money was still outstanding and some items had not been settled, the first-named found himself compelled to request time for this, and at the same time promised to make as much haste with one and the other as would ever be possible. This having been agreed to in a friendly manner, the execution of the transfer had to suffer this forced delay; and everything was finally concluded and terminated in good order without the slightest objection or contradiction from any side, while during this process, upon inspection of the piece goods, it was discovered that the bale of Bengali sailcloth No. 638, which had become somewhat wet on the outside, was inside in such a condition Persia under date 25 December 1739 Jan as the enclosed report under No. 23 demonstrates; wherefore we have been compelled to remove the 41 pieces mentioned therein from that bale as unserviceable and to send them as such to Your Honours, with the very humble request to make them usable there for the use of the hospital, for packaging, or otherwise, so that the Honourable Company shall suffer no damage thereby. The pilot Hamed Hinchader was not a little astonished when he learned that, according to Your Honours' instructions in the letter dated 6 April of last year to Boucheer, he had arrived here and was to travel further with this vessel for a salary of 4 tomans, stating that he would much rather give his labour to the Honourable Company as a gift than to be satisfied with so small an amount, especially since he had now brought in a vessel incomparably larger than the Adriana, for which 769 Persia under date 25 December 1739 he had received 6 tomans; and on that account had rather expected a larger than a smaller reward. Persia under date 23 December 1739 From trade might in some way begin to flourish, the favor of time will have to be awaited. The first undersigned, having learned that the outgoing steward Willem Slaars, on account of a debt of m. s 2500, was being hard pressed by his creditor, a merchant named Iohia Tjelebie, who threatened to prevent his departure in case of non-payment, judged it necessary to make this matter known to the gentlemen present, in order to discover thereby whether together they might find a means to rescue Slaars from his impoverished condition, and in doing so prevent all affronts with which the Honorable Company in his person was so heavily threatened, by arrest as well as otherwise. Which matter having been deliberated upon, examined in its inner essence, and the settlement being deemed highly necessary, it was unanimously resolved to draw that sum from the Company's Persia under date 25 December 1739 From treasury of the Honorable Company, in order to satisfy the creditor therewith, and this for all such reasons as are recorded in sufficient detail in our taken resolution under date and No. 25; in humble hope that Your Honors will graciously be pleased to excuse us for this forced expedient. We presently know of no remarkable news worthy of Your Honors' attention to mention herewith, except only the arrival of a consul for the French nation here, named Monsieur de Martinville, who has been provided with notable regalia and prerogatives directly from the court at Constantinople through the efforts of their ambassador, and by virtue of this also intends shortly to have their flag flown from their residence, so that only our Noble and Very Mighty Company continues to lack that necessary show of honor at this place.
