With an open slip, the same being, after the customary reading thereof and whatever from the further annexes might find application for your commission to the welfare of the Honorable Company, first to be given its further address as soon and as feasibly as possible. We shall then see the contents of one and the other through your dutiful zeal answered on occasion, and for the rest refer ourselves thereto. Three days after the departure of the runner Ali Naqi with our last of the 19th of this month, your letters of the 7th prior were duly delivered to us by Achmed Kocherdij, with all the annexes of which the register has made mention, and whereto in reply we say that it has been heartily agreeable to us to learn of the safe arrival of the ship Binnewijsent on 4 May, and its departure for Basra on the 24th of that month, after the goods for you had been unloaded therefrom and again some for us had been shipped aboard the same, according to the letter of 11 April last, which you had received from the hands of the ministers of that place, and whom we wish furthermore with that vessel safely to the aforementioned Honorable, Pious, Discreet. You thus having proceeded without the least indulgence to that excessive disbursement, we have therefore by resolution thought fit and determined to order you hereby to calculate the excess amount beyond what was provided and expended for the Adriane at cost, and to return it to the Honorable Company's cash from which those sums were taken, as well as in future to guard against such harmful supplies without high necessity, and which also applies in all other cases, to avoid sharp displeasure. And since we, contrary to all expectation, having had no knowledge of your sale of the forward goods, it was resolved after mature consideration to have the surplus rejected on the products of the spices, mint, and copper, as well as that which was sold for less in weight and piece than that of which our license and approval can be demonstrated, counted into the treasury there by you, as we then understand that this must take effect upon sight hereof, with orders to calculate the one and the other in such manner as you shall find properly accountable, and in future rather to consult with us in good time on such distinct matters, as well as to do that which is written to you. From Persia under date the 25th of December 1739 On the 8th and 14th of this month your letters under mid- and 29th of November last, with the trade books and all appendices agreeing with their register, were duly delivered and on the last-mentioned day revised in council and found to correspond with the main ledgers. Consequently, regarding the important points of the commission, the resolution was passed as the extract attached hereto can show, to which we then refer. In continuation of this, we say that once we have finished the draft to their Right Honorable High Mightinesses, the High Indian Government, we shall obediently present the details, so that a copy thereof will appear to you in due time. Regarding your further request to confiscate one of the horses for the riding needs of the Honorable Company, and to be allowed to write off to profit and loss the amount of 155 lb of old copperware lost during cleaning, amounting to 230 mamudis at 97 guilders 15 stivers, it serves for your information that we have not been able to judge this necessary at this time, especially among other reasons because one is obliged to await what disposition their High Excellencies will be pleased to take in respect of the commission. And concerning the copper, we persevere that the same may not be purchased higher than for the limited price of 10 piasters at 4 guilders 5 stivers the 6 lb, for good sound pieces, and as we have said several times, if it cannot be obtained more cheaply, it being our opinion that the loss should not be charged to the Honorable Company, but that in purchasing, the calculation must be made that all incidental expenses are included in the price of 10 mamudis, as it is also not the nature of proper bookkeeping to balance such a loss against profitable goods, but such pertains to the product itself, since it is observed that the paysa currency there can be exchanged against the contents of the cash at 35 pta, while additionally being bartered for chintz spreads, small batidaar, batidaar, and moeramet. Thus you are not only authorized to exchange the same for the paysa currency and pure copperware if no gold sequins, shalottes, piastres, imperial thalers, or other profitable products should be offered, and that at such a price as we have made known to you by earlier letters, but also fully licensed to trade and exchange all other remaining merchandise of the Honorable Company against those returns, as well as against right pure wheat up to the quantity of 30,000 to 40,000 lb and the price of 8 mamudis for the man of 108 lb, although this quantity had not, according to the last-mentioned report, been sold in 4,000 lb lots, from which it is to be presumed that the same is still stored there, in which case, upon a desired further opportunity to obtain good quality, you may augment that small lot by a further purchase up to the first-mentioned quantity. Your requisition will also be fulfilled in whole or in part as occasion permits, and therefore we only wish that your remaining balances may soon be converted into good returns. Regarding your petition to be allowed to charge extra firewood for 40 mamudis per month, permission was indeed granted by the majority in the resolution, but we do not want to buy that it shall be of such duration that a persistent consequence to the detriment of management arises from it, seeing that through the agreement made meanwhile with the Arab nation, all danger at sea and the safety of the caravans must or at least ought to be freed. So we trust that in observance of the recommended frugality, all due diligence will be exerted on your part so that the expenses may rather decrease than increase in such a bad time as we collectively have experienced with sorrow. The restitution of the peon and your promises regarding Nagha Natta have been accepted, while we shall then remain content with that. And since in your previous letters the objectionable entry of Sheikh Makur was answered, we have also provided for that matter, so that by the received rahdari pass (accompanied by its translation and an authentic copy) granted by the Beylerbeyi Mahomet Takkie Khan, it will be seen and will stop them in their design; but regarding the order dispatched hither recently in favor of Aga Abdalie on account of the broker, which was granted and seems harmful as it goes against ancient custom and all ordinances, we have therefore expressly represented and requested the necessary from his Highness the following day, upon which we hope to receive a counter-order that will soon remove all difficulties. In the interim we, according to Your Honours' much desired permission, by the bearer of this also return: 2 packs or 120 pieces Harburg sailcloth 1 small pack, 35 pieces rastapat ditto, 7 pieces turbans ditto, 80 pieces susies orangshahi because of the first-mentioned, or the sailcloth, due to the closed navigation to Muscat etc., as being exclusively Arabian assortments; the rastapat and turbans because of their unpopularity; and the susies orangshahi because of their durability, as the English in loco sell that same sort yearly against mamoodis 35 to 40 heavy money, no turnover is to be expected for them. Regarding the purchase of the products for return, and first of all the requisitioned tanuwe, we must inform Your Honours that no beginning could yet be made with its purchase, for the reason that no pure sort has yet arrived. However, From the Coast under date 25 December 1739 however, we do not doubt that after the lapse of 1 to 1½ months, and thus after Nadir Shah's departure and the shipping off of the provision grains, we shall succeed therewith to satisfaction; in which respect we then request permission and an order to be allowed to send the same thither with hired native vessels. Furthermore, the price of old copperwork continues to circulate at mamoodis 10, so that we have not been able to proceed to its purchase either, but await Your Honours' further orders in that regard. In the meantime, however, under hope of favorable interpretation, we have taken the liberty that what is now sent by the bearer of this, and of which the attached invoice calculates against the before-mentioned price, and thereby also the incurred expenses are to testify to its purity, it has been and still is entirely impossible to obtain that mineral cheaper, the peysas coin being at present not obtainable at all, mostly for the reason that in Shiraz 903 From Persia under date 25 December 1739 itself the agio circulates at only 50 percent, and thus no profit can be gained by the merchants by importing it hither, that coin presently circulating on the bazaar in loco at only 30 percent. However, there is still good hope that shortly from Bakhtiyari some caravans with that sort of mineral will arrive, at which time no means will be left untried to exchange the same to the greatest benefit of the Honorable Company. Furthermore, we have the honor herewith to offer Your Honours the answers to the highly revered demands of Their High Excellencies, while concerning the Bengal sample linens, after exact examination, we must to our regret testify that they are priced too high, so that on none of them any noteworthy advances are offered, and why we have also not dared to proceed to the making of a requisition for them.
