Cardamom Javanese ditto 29: ditto 1921: — 1½. schraal Iron in bars ditto 283. ditto 56594: — —½. regarding which deficits we can allege as true and sincere reasons, firstly that our warehouses, as is known to everyone, are very subject to the frequent dry and hot winds, through which this diminution can notoriously be alleged primarily concerning the spices, pepper, lacquer, and the sappanwood; yet regarding the sweets, there is furthermore to be cited the terrible consumption by the countless rats, mice, and large black ants, with which this place in general, so to speak, is overrun: apart from and besides that which is wasted and lost through handling; wherefore we hope that these short weights will be graciously validated for us, the more so when we can furthermore testify with an easy conscience regarding the same to have profited neither directly nor indirectly from them, nor to profit in the future, in confirmation of which concerning the spices the oath was hereby solemnly sworn, by raising our two foremost right-hand fingers and uttering the words: So truly help me God Almighty. Thus executed and affirmed by oath in the Netherlands Office Bassoura, date as in the heading, was signed: C:s De Haan, and W:m Slaars; in the middle: in my presence, was signed: George Gutchi; lower: Agrees, was signed: C: De Haan. Given that all the same contain no particular excesses, are also supported by sincere reasons for their origin, and even regarding the spices are confirmed by oath, it has been resolved to overlook the one and the other likewise, as well as, subject to approval of what has been done, to present another served document of contents as appears below. Honorable Sir, In pursuance of Your Honor's esteemed order, we the undersigned, prior to the weighing of the merchandise delivered ashore from the ship Binnewijsent, have accurately checked the standard weights used from of old against the new ones, and found the same to agree: with which we then hope to have done well, so we remain with respect, beneath stood: His Honor's Humble and Obedient Servants, was signed: Willem Slaars and C:s Sonneveld. In the margin: Bassoura, this 10 June 1739. Concerning some funds fallen short at the cash office upon transfer, or 2 pieces of promissory notes and their translations to the amount of m:s 18514: at ƒ7868: 9:— arising from a sale made of 1035. ½ @ broadcloths, the decision remains at Their High Nobilities' generous pleasure; however, although those bonds inspire in us by no means the most favorable thoughts of settlement, Mr. van Suchtelen shall nevertheless be instructed to keep those debts continuously active, and to insist strictly on the collection, as well as to let this occurrence of his unfortunate predecessor serve him as a warning, in future to deliver no goods on credit or otherwise than for cash to such despicable buyers, but on the contrary, in the execution of the formidable orders issued in that regard, rather to render 287 From Persia under date 25 December 1740. the due obedience to avoid displeasure and personal disadvantage. One has furthermore, partly because of the urgent motives deduced in the Bassoura letter and ditto resolution, with an attached promissory note of the ultimo July, partly by reason of a petition presented locally by the debtor Willem Slaars himself, attentively reflected upon the withdrawal of 25 tomans from the Company's cash in satisfaction of his creditor, # the Turkish merchant Jahia Gelebie, yet, absolute remission appearing unfeasible here, justified it solely subject to the highly favorable approval of Their High Nobilities, for which reason then that advance continues to be charged to his account in both pay-books, until such time as Their said High Nobilities shall be pleased to honor us in the case subject with further orders. From Persia under date 25 December 1740. In the course of 1 months, in proportion to the disastrous times, there has still been a reasonable turnover, yielding a clear profit of ƒ36739:2:8 or 99 1/3 percent on the cost price, or gross ƒ61320:6:8 or 165 1/4 percent. Those servants at present renew their previously received demand of merchandise dated 8 April last, enclosing with the letter of the aforesaid that they have not been unwilling, but unable, safely to petition for any new textiles from Bengal. And although at present we lack nothing at this office, and much less run short of such trade goods as the aforementioned demand enumerates and which we ourselves do not have on hand, yet every possible effort will be applied to forward thither nothing short of what is feasible. Concerning the returns from Basra and among them old unrefined copper works, there has been extensive reasoning both on the proposed price thereof, fluctuating between 50 and 52 maunds, and also on the further considerations regarding the gathering and sending of these products in preference to the Turkish coins. However, no such weight or fundamental ground has yet been found to qualify the ministers for their purchase, since according to our calculation, good and bad goods being accepted together, those galley-wares would yield no advantage at all for the masters, but might perhaps at the balancing of the account and rebate of the expenses which must inevitably fall on dispatch, melting-down, etcetera, not to mention the heavy short-weights and other vicissitudes peculiar to trade, involve far more losses than shallots and piastres. Wherefore it was ultimately judged most advisable not to touch further upon that delicate point and disputed question, but before granting licence, after obligatory notification to Their High Excellencies, most obediently to await their most worthy orders and resolution, while at the same time advising Mr. van Suchtelen to apply his utmost ability in the meantime, in order to alleviate the fatal losses on money, to the exchange of the imperial dollars at 8 1/2 maunds or such price as the departed resident Gutchi's left memorial dictates by way of advice, since the Honourable Company upon transport could apparently find its account on that coin incomparably better than on the aforementioned product or the Turkish currencies. Furthermore, the cost of the procured drugs, namely: 2 3/10 lb gum galbanum at 200 maunds: ƒ42:10:- per mann for 27 lb amounts pro rata to ƒ4:5:- 2 17/10 lb gallnuts at 22 1/2 maunds: 9:11:4 per mann for 27 lb amounts pro rata to -:19:2 2 7/10 lb madder from Basra at 12 1/2 maunds: 5:6:4 per mann for 27 lb amounts pro rata to -:10:10:- Total: ƒ52:4:12 was considered an unauthorized qualification, but one undertaken with a well-intentioned and careful aim, and we shall subsequently attempt to ship that trifle to places where, if not a profit, one can at least calculate no loss. The aforementioned memorial, which also makes mention of these remittances taken as a test, was well drawn up according to the circumstances of the times, and for that reason approved, nevertheless under serious recommendation to the aforementioned Mr. van Suchtelen to be guided by it in all cases, insofar namely as it shall fully accord with Their High Excellencies' definite orders held here on hand. While for the rest there is still something to be said neither on the balances nor on the general transfer, regarding the inventory of the gold and silver works as was effected by the following. Report made and in all reverence delivered to the Honourable Mr. George Gutchi, Merchant and Chief of this office. Honourable Sir, According to Your Honour's esteemed order, we the undersigned, as specially appointed commissioners, have presented ourselves to the bookkeeper and storekeeper of this office, Willem Slaars, in order to make there a general inventory of all such Honourable Company's effects consisting of remaining gold, silver, and copper goods which according to the books must be delivered in pieces by count, as is demonstrated below in all reverence. 1 piece

Entered in the books with its value sum, but not with its pieces known, now found to consist of 131 pieces and 3 chains. This report indicating a decrease of one bridle by 13 pesos, notwithstanding that the same in the books up to the first of September 1736 was still entered at 173 pieces and 494½ meticals, and furthermore that which remained from the embassy of 1701 held its course in the Gamron books up to the first of the said month 1714 at 59 pesos and 51 guilders, and whereas the third was booked in the year 1735 without statement of weight, therefore, to prevent all disorderly proceedings, From Persia dated 25 December 1740. it will be ordered thither to show the said 3 pieces bridles with the other gold and silver effects, in compliance with the ancient order, by an accurate survey and specific statement of the weight, quantity, and reduction of the pieces, along with their causes, yet in the future, after raising all sorts of objections, as was observed in spite of everything in the postscript of the oft-mentioned letter, not to refer us any longer to such verbal reports and declarations of departing chiefs, but to furnish in writing before their departure the required reasons for elucidation, since for lack thereof, through death or other human contingencies, one could easily remain deprived of a fuller and sufficient explanation, although Merchant Gutchi, who had then come hither from there, satisfied us during his Honor's presence according to those promises, and at the same time induced us to approve the proceedings taken against the local broker Fatlitjent, and at the same time to defer to the resident remaining there his own discretion and prudent conduct the choice of another capable and faithful person, so that in this regard we do not currently make other orders, nor can we send an accountant thither from here, to whom one would quietly dare to entrust important matters, holding 293 From Persia, dated 25 December 1740 1 large vessel. Because on the finding of the cargo of Linnewijsent projected for Boucheer, and delivered there, was not disposed of at the meeting of 27 June, and our decision thereon was reserved until the full discharge and arrival from Bassoura, thus one has at least upon its examination discovered the following shortages. Cloves 8 lb. or 1 1/20 per cent shortage on 1259 lb. Nutmegs 3½ lb. or 1 1/37 per cent shortage on 130 lb. is 39½ lb. Cinnamon 4 lb. or 3/8 per cent shortage on 640 lb. Iron 89 lb. or 19 per cent shortage on 8000 lb. Candy sugar 1498 lb. or 5 1/5 per cent shortage on 28823 lb. being unloaded over there in 72 canassers net 24207 lb. The 11 found, and then missing ditto must weigh 4616 lb., have at the same time only yielded on the spot 3118 lb. Therefore produced a loss of 1498 lb., 4616 lb. From which it is then evidently clear that the respective Malabar servants were by no means mistaken, but incomparably more sharp-sighted upon receipt than the chief mate Jan Zion in the hold upon delivery. From Bassoura 420¼, or 7 infected whole pieces of diverse broadcloth in two crates, instead of 436½, as that fabric averaged together should deliver; but whereas upon remeasuring and inspection made by two express commissioners and the Company's brokers in the presence of us as warehouse keepers, of those fabrics only were found sound: @ 296½ and what is damaged by the moth amounts to: 223¾ the good and bad averaged together comes again to: @ 420¼ so this gives a discrepancy or deficiency of: f 16¼ which, however, is lacking only in the 4 pieces of grass green and 1 ditto scarlet, which were shipped per ships De Lagepolder and Alida from the Chamber of Enkhuizen, and in the year 1737 on 27 March were received here. pack of Bengal sailcloth, which was numbered, described, and its gross weight found as the bill of lading dictates; its packing is also in good condition. 200 gunnies, together with and alongside 1 small chest of drugs, item 1 small bottle of naphtha brought ashore without defect, and likewise stored. 25 packs of wet dates remain still in that small vessel until further orders, to evade 20 ditto dry ditto coolie wages, freight money, spillage, etc. From Boucheer. 3118 lb candy sugar instead of 4616 lb, ergo short: 1498 lb; for the unloading of that sweetness at Boucheer consists, according to the findings dated 18 May last, only of: 29207 lb, and that which was received thereof at this place amounts, as stated, to: 3118 lb, which, subtracting the one from the other, makes: 28823 lb. And this is actually the entire amount of sugar which the authorities at the commission place were obliged to deliver, and whereupon currently falls a loss of scarce 5 1/5 percent, for which the authorities have produced no other credible reasons than that this may have occurred through molasses drainage. 7453¼ lb old copper works instead of 8100 lb, consequently short 646¾ lb, or scarce 8 percent, regarding which exorbitant deficiency the crew alleges that [illegible] were mixed among that mineral, over and above the meager allowance of Boucheer, and the unavoidable theft of the porters, etc. 9988 copper pice; this mineral corresponded in weight and also in count. 9 ditto weights of 50 lb each, duly received here and having been thus confronted by commissioners in the presence of the fiscal against the standard weight, were found, as well as repaired, in the manner treated in the report noted under yesterday's date and annexed hereto. Honorable, Venerable Ruling Lord and Honorable Lords, Pursuant to the respected and circular orders of their Right Honorable Vigorous High Esteemed Members of the High Indian Government at Batavia, as well as Your Honors' further verbal instructions, the undersigned judicial commissioners, in the presence of the newly created provisionally appointed fiscal, have proceeded today to the Company's warehouse, in order to inspect there on the scale the weights in daily use at this trading post against the gauge sent here for that purpose in the past, and subsequently to redress any defects therein to the utmost possibility. Upon the execution of this, nothing of significance has come before us, except and besides that: 2 peso weights of 50 lb. were each 1/16 lb. too heavy, and 1 ditto ditto of 50 lb. was 1/8 lb. too light.
