From Persia under date 31 July 1740. 19:19:8: of this year more than the previous financial year having arrived here, the customary monthly money was paid, just as on extraordinary occasions for bonuses an amount of ƒ 102:—:— more was disbursed, and against that was saved ƒ 14:17:8 which was paid less, as well as that to no Bandar-e Bushehr couriers, none having arrived, anything was distributed, whereas in the past year to the one sent from there hither dito ƒ 21:5:— was granted, thus no other reason for the increased entry can be brought forward or given than what has already been alleged here above. Extraordinary Expenses Ao: 1737 ƒ 2691:10:8: 1738/9. This account of this year would have amounted to ƒ 2811:6:—, but since of that, according to the Gamron judgement passed in council, an amount of ƒ 120:5:8 was disapproved on account of the greater expense here at the office for wines etc. dispensed from time to time to the regents thereof, the local lords and friends, whom one nevertheless could not very well conveniently refuse, and for which this account was then credited again, thus the reduction comes to constitute the extracted total, whereas it would otherwise only have been ƒ 406:4:8, while in the meantime the indicated principal sum could not be deducted, both for confectionery and other inevitable expenses, not of old graciously permitted to be brought into the annual account to be spent for this account, and furthermore no other reason for the diminution can be adduced than that this year, unlike what happened in the previous one, no banquets were given, ergo on that item principally an amount of ƒ 810:1:— was saved, just as also upon the news of Shahjahanabad's conquest by this Nader Shah, also well-intended, for 4:5: less was expended on musket powder than what one had to distribute in the past year upon the capture of Kandahar; but on the other hand this year again, among other things, sugar confectionery was presented to the foremost of the most eminent persons, item served during received visits for ƒ 58:2: and for sent flowers 3270.—:8:. . . . . . ƒ 586:10:—. From Persia under date 31 July 1740. ƒ4978:18:3 ƒ 606:9:8:— to cause to vacate, and thereby to obtain the nest solely for the advancement of his own nation's interests, and moreover firmly accused the mentioned servants of having been the cause of the dispute, simultaneously inciting the government that one must impose a fine of 1000 tomans upon us for the benefit of His Majesty etc., and why, in order to obtain satisfaction for the injured party and to bring that brutal Muscovite to reason, we have indeed been compelled, as if out of necessity, to enter into such offerings by treating the mediators coming into this lodge in that affair with confectionery, together with the disbursed amounts for other small items, yes, so this account would only have been debited for a sum of ƒ388:1:14 for several small gifts given there, which could not well suitably be omitted since a friendly request was made for them by those recipients, as to Mirza Jafar, first writer of the late former governor of this city, Mr. Hatem Beg, 1½ lb. From Persia under date 31st July 1740. 143 Applicants, namely Steven Pruymelaar and Andries van Nes, and upon the first of whom the choice fell by majority, since he is not only familiar with the nature, language, and customs of these country peoples, but also because someone ought to be there who has some command of the language, in order to trace the creditors of the deceased without great assistance of the interpreter and to properly investigate their claims, considering that among them there could well be those who would gladly fish in troubled waters; but that he, Pruijmelaar, was better aware and knowledgeable of everything concerning the estate of the late Mr. van Leijpzigh than anyone else, and moreover not only possesses the required competence for that office, but during his summons and arrival here has conducted himself very quietly and commendably; however, the gentlemen De Haan and Jongstal judged that Van Nes ought to be chosen for this, because that person is of quiet conduct, and with him competence for that office resided as well as with Pruijmelaar, although he was not linguistically skilled like Pruijmelaar. Report rendered and presented in all respect to the Honorable, Respected Mr. Carel Koenad, Senior Merchant and Director of this Persian Directorship, as well as the Council. Commanding Sir and Gentlemen. In compliance with Your Honors' honored order, we, the undersigned, as specially appointed commissioners, have proceeded to the dispensary of this trading post and there carefully inspected a small box with gum samples received from Spahan, which we found to consist of the following kinds: namely gum ammoniac and gum bdellium, both mixed with one another to the weight of 2 ounces, the same being of a good and sound quality. Below stood: Wherewith, Honorable, Commanding Sir and Gentlemen, we hope to have carried out this commission of ours to Your Honors' satisfaction, wherefore we take the liberty of subscribing ourselves. Subsequently, deliberations were entered into concerning the shortage of funds discovered in the treasury at Spahan after the decease of the late Mr. van Leijpzigh, to our grievous sorrow, amounting to the sum of 42047:5:- mahmudis, or 17870:1:10 florins; and it being moreover considered that Aalmis had one of the keys to it and Mr. van Leijpzigh the other, so that he, Aalmis, is just as liable as the aforementioned late deceased, all the more because during his presence there, with the exception of very little money, those funds were withdrawn from the treasury and payments were made to various creditors of the late Mr. van Leijpzigh, in which case the statement confirmed by oath by him and the interpreter Elias Sahid can be of little avail, which verbatim reads: We, the undersigned, Pieter Aalmis, assistant and provisional second-in-command, and Elias Sahid, interpreter, both in the service of the Honorable Company assigned to this trading post, declare for the true and sincere truth that after the decease of the late Honorable Mr. Mattheus van Leijpzigh we carefully audited the Honorable Company's treasury, in which we then found no more than an amount of thirty-one thousand four hundred thirty-three mahmudis and fifteen peisen, or thirteen thousand three hundred fifty-nine florins, 6 stivers, and fourteen pence; and according to the books, under date 12 November, it must amount to a sum of seventy-three thousand four hundred eighty-one mahmudis, or thirty-one thousand two hundred twenty-nine florins, eight stivers, and eight pence. Thus, subtracting the first-mentioned amount from the last-mentioned, it appears that the late Mr. van Leijpzigh enjoyed in cash from the aforementioned treasury of the Honorable Company a sum of thirty-two thousand forty-seven mahmudis and five peisen, or seventeen thousand eight hundred seventy florins, one stiver, and 10 pence, which were then found to be deficient; which deficit the oft-mentioned late Mr. van Leijpzigh for the most part expended in payment of some of his debts which he incurred for the maintenance of the Honorable Company's precious honor, from which that deficit must certainly originate, and to the truth whereof, since we never profited anything from it nor stand to profit, we thus confirm this declaration with a solemn oath, speaking, while raising our two front fingers of our right hands, these following substantial words: So truly help us God Almighty. Thus done and sworn in the Dutch trading post at Spahan, the 18 December 1739. Was signed: Pieter Aalmis and Elias Sahid. Because it had been his duty immediately after the decease of the often-mentioned Chief to audit the state of the treasury and report to us thereon, but having lingered so long on this important point and thereby keeping us in ignorance, so that such measures could have been taken in time as were thought appropriate according to the circumstances of the matter; therefore, it was unanimously approved, in order to keep the Honorable Company free of damage as far as possible, to encumber Aalmis for that amount on his current salary account until such time as the goods of the deceased have arrived here and the yield shall show what is still deficient, both in the treasury and regarding such debts as, God forbid, the Smyrnaian and others, whereby the Honorable Company could suffer claim and disrespect, as, for example, the debt to the wardrobe master of His Persian Majesty the Nader Shah, named Aga Mhamed, son of Aga Rahiem, to the amount of 1100:- mahmudis, or 4730:5:- florins, and of which servants firmly state that payment will have to be made to him and such other creditors who have any connection with the ruler of this empire, or else that a final settlement be reached, so that the Honorable Company be not exposed to any affronts or harmful consequences; and for which reason it is also approved to authorize Aalmis to issue a small gratuity to the 9 so-called doctors who treated the deceased, since the same cannot well be left neglected for the precious honor of the Honorable Company; but as regards the claim of the widow Gadjick and her petition of complaint submitted in this regard, both concerning the late deceased and the brokers of Spahan, it will be shelved until such time as the new second-in-command, Steeven Pruijmdaar, and her brother, the interpreter David Sahid, arrive there, since we are deprived here of hearing the parties, and

From Persia under date 31 July 1740. and to be able to examine and approve such papers as pertain thereto, Monsieur Aalmis shall nevertheless be instructed to do his utmost to effect an association, until such time and while the aforementioned second and interpreter shall have arrived there; since the said linguist, in conformity with the license obtained from their Right Excellencies for the recovery of his eyesight, has been permitted to make a brief journey to Spahan, whilst the service of interpreter for the Honorable Company is provisionally requested for his brother Abraham Sahid, who is present here, with the same benefits and remuneration as he, David, enjoyed. And since, therefore, it has not remained clear since the receipt of the Spahan letters dated 30 June of the past year where the 280 thomans or 11900 guilders recorded therein—which were furnished in advance according to that report to the weavers of the gold and silver fabrics ordered in Isfahan for the purchase of gold and silver wire, silk, etc.—have gone, Monsieur Aalmis shall therefore report on this, and a satisfactory answer shall be demanded, in order to discover how matters stand in this regard, before these funds might eventually be locked away in the dungeon of oblivion and withholding by self-serving persons. Subsequently, the Honorable Director put to the vote whether one should grant the 900 thomans or 38250 guilders requested by the servants for the purchase of goods, or rather a portion thereof; judging at the same time it to be completely adequate, and that one could relieve all their pretended embarrassment by providing 600 thomans at 25500 guilders, of which conveniently 100 thomans at 4250 guilders could be employed for the redemption of such pawned goods, according to the valuation to the amount of 10700 mamudis or 4547 guilders and 10 stivers, as have been pledged to the Armenian priest Jacob for an amount of 8000 mamudis or 3400 guilders, since it was asserted that these goods, when sold in the upcoming period, will still provide some relief (since among them are many fine precious stones of renown) to the sufferers; which proposition and proposal was approved by all the members, except by the gentlemen Berghlijck and Schemming, who were indeed willing to grant those funds for the necessary expenses and the fulfillment of the demands, provided that the Honorable Company's brokers here, or another trustworthy person or persons, stood surety for the disappearance of the funds; and although such would be a good and desirable matter for the benefit of the Honorable Company, yet no one could be found who dared to shoulder such a hazardous matter. Consequently, those two gentlemen declared that they did not wish to be held liable for any loss that the Honorable Company might suffer, but left such to the accountability of those who voted in favor of it; but since the other members judged that the Honorable Company by no means demands such conditions, and nothing more than what is possible, from its servants throughout all the Indies, this concept therefore fell through insofar as it was impossible, and in the meantime it was approved to send Aalmis a bill of exchange for the aforementioned purpose of 60000 mamudis at 25500 guilders, in order thereby to remove all embarrassment and to put the servants in Spahan in a position to meet their daily expenses to be incurred, likewise the purchase of such goods as have been demanded from there for Batavia and the other respective Western Offices, whilst the servants are hereby further permitted to sell all the merchandise remaining there, which to date had been prepared to be sent thither as a gift and remains stored there (except for the 4 jars of diverse preserves which, before they spoil, may well be distributed upon inquiry for the welfare of the Honorable Company), to the greatest advantage of the Honorable Company, and to employ those funds in such manner as is serviceable and necessary for the benefit of the Honorable Company; it being furthermore approved during the drafting hereof, in order to remove all embarrassment of the servants, to send thither by the frequently mentioned second such other goods as are not needed here and may serve for gift-giving there. The Spahan affairs having been dealt with thus far, His Honor produced such estate papers as were drawn up by the provisional chief there, Monsieur Aalmis, regarding the estate of the late Mr. Mattheus van Leijpzigh, and sent hither, as well as those received on the 10th of this month along with a missive under His Honor's cover from Bengal on the 8th of the same by English opportunity; all of which papers, upon the proposition of the Honorable Director, after opening and having been read, were handed over for examination to the paymaster of this office, Gerrard Samuel Pas, together with two judicial commissioners, and who, during the drafting hereof, have also submitted such an account current thereof as appears below.

Likewise, for the benefit of the estate, the debits of Messieurs Steren Pruijmelaar up to maunds 1,514:10:— at 643 guilders, 13 stuivers, 4 penningen, and Isaacq de Craene, maunds 5,357:10:— at 2,276 guilders, 18 stuivers, 12 penningen, or together up to maunds 6,872:— at 2,920 guilders, 12 stuivers, are to be charged to their current salary accounts; whereas the provisional trade bookkeeper, as proxy for Mr. Jacob van Schoonderwoord, has intervened to pay the maunds 741:12:— or 315 guilders, 10 stuivers, 12 penningen that the said gentleman owed to the aforementioned estate. In the outgoing Ispahan missive, Monsieur Aalmis shall be strictly ordered to do his utmost by urging the interpreter there, Elias Sahid, to discharge his debt of maunds 4,114:17:— at 1,748 guilders, 18 stuivers, 3½ penningen, so as to bring some relief to the sufferers as far as possible and to keep the Honourable Company free of all damage. In the meantime, the further settlement of this estate, conforming to the respected orders, is requested and referred to the Honourable Court of Justice of this Office. Report rendered to the Right Honourable Mr. Carel Koenad, Senior Merchant and Commander over the Honourable Company's important trade and business in the Realm of Persia, with the dependencies thereof, together with the Honourable Council. Honourable Commanding Sir and Honourable Sirs! In compliance with Your Right Honours' highly respected order, the undersigned proceeded on 7 December 1738 to the place and district called Minab, in order to collect to the best of his ability, and if possible, such monies as the Honourable Company had to claim there. However, the acts of violence and heavy exactions imposed upon the poor inhabitants there by His Highness Mhamettackie Chan have prevented this, which has caused the aforementioned country folk to no longer know whose payment they should satisfy first: His Highness or the Honourable Company. Indeed, the chiefs of that district had already demanded and received some monies under the pretext that they would serve toward the settlement of the Honourable Company's account, the aforementioned country folk also having been in no other mind than that the monies paid by them had been settled in their favour with the Honourable Company. And although the mohazel, named Mir Maatralie, had orders from His Highness to use his utmost endeavours to collect such monies from the inhabitants there for the account of the Honourable Company, he did not conduct himself therein according to duty, but on the contrary allowed himself to be corrupted by gifts and presents from those country folk, whereupon they were set at liberty by him, and he misled the undersigned for a time with some frivolous pretexts that he put forward. Whereupon, after investigating the matter, I put the same to the aforementioned mohazel, who replied to me that it was impossible for the Company to obtain its due in this juncture of time, because the inhabitants on the one hand had not yet paid the King's dues, and on the other hand the demand of the Beglerbegi Mhamed Tackie Chan for grains and dates for his army, and for that reason the Honourable Company will have to resign itself to exercising patience until such time as the countryman shall have settled the King's and His Highness's demand, as, according to the aforementioned mohazel's saying, it was also His Highness's order that the countryman should not pay the Honourable Company before His Majesty and he had been served with it. From Persia under date 31 July 1740. 461 would have to settle among themselves the debts of the Company, which the undersigned, having then noticed the murmuring of those countrymen, was forced to speak about with the mohazil, and to request him, under promises of procuring a gift for him whenever he exerted his utmost efforts to obtain, beyond the Company's general obligation, also from each of them in particular a similar one sealed with their seals, provided that after having settled with the King's dues and the currently imposed taxes, they would be bound to let the Honorable Company also receive what is due to it, which was then accepted by them within a period of two months; and I, having obtained the aforementioned obligations, as well as, after the expiration of the stipulated time, being unable to obtain it in cash, was forced, alongside His Highness's mohazil named Mier Maat Alie, who likewise instead of specie had to content himself for his master's account with dates, to attach that fruit for the account and benefit of the Honorable Company, and according to their own agreement not to deliver a quantity of 13000 mans of 8 lb each of dried dates 600 packs of fresh dates of 16 mans each, however during the receipt of those, a quantity of 2000 mans of dried, and 150 packs of fresh dates having become completely wet and spoiled due to a heavy downpour of rain, I judged it best to let the owners From Persia under date 31 July 1740. — keep the same, and to content myself for that time with what had already been received, as according to the account drawn up in due form and annexed hereto will be shown to be a lot amounting to 11000 man of dried dates, and 450 packs of fresh ditto; the inhabitants there having given me assurance upon my departure for this place that they hoped with God, as soon as they had finished with His Highness, shortly to restore the remainder to the Company as well with thanks. Kroonenburgh by the Right Honourable Respected Gentleman, and Mr. Johann Minne, commissioner of the administration of the chamber of Amsterdam, appointed as provisional boatswain's mate without increase of wage, and having arrived in India in that capacity, and subsequently here by the ship Steenhoven, is, out of the mentioned consideration and good testimonials of his ship's officers, granted the established wage of ƒ14 per month under a new three-year contract. Fredrik Hans of Tonderen, anno 1738 for sailor and ƒ11 with Kerksigt in India, also on the ship Hilverbeek on 17 January 1739 appointed as boatswain's mate on Steenhoven without increase of wage, and having arrived here with that vessel, was upon his submitted request granted the wage of ƒ14 per month under a new contract of three years. Roeloff Cramer of Heemen, in the year 1737 per the ship Watervliet as young sailor at 8 guilders arrived in India, is today upon his request and given proof of his capability advanced to cooper on the ship 't Hoff Niet Altijd Somer with the wage of 14 guilders per month under a new three-year contract. The military lieutenant, Your Honors' humble servant Anthonij Jansz: van Bergh Eyck, native of 't Rensereen, humbly shows by this how he, suppliant, with the departure of the yacht Anthonia on 14 May of the past year, respectfully requested an honorable discharge from this region from Their High Excellencies on account of his continuous pining away and long-lasting ailment, but recently learned that this vessel was detained on the Malabar Coast for other services; and thus little hope was given to him, suppliant, of obtaining a prompt approval of the request made. Therefore, with the daily increasing bodily weakness, in the desperate condition in which he currently persists, as appears from the attached attestation, and ample time having expired, he takes the liberty of presenting his visible and fully known incurable condition more closely to Your Honors' favorable commiseration, and furthermore also to pray to be pleased, on that account, by the next ship's dispatch, to favor him with his release to Batavia, permitting him to cross over with discontinued wages, as on account of weakness I am not in a position to properly attend to the service of my lords and masters. All the aforesaid the appearer testifies to contain the pure and sincere truth, giving as reasons for his knowledge having seen and experienced it thus himself, remaining for the rest prepared, if required, to confirm it further by solemn oath. Thus done and declared in the Dutch office of Gamron on the day, month, and year aforesaid, in the presence of the bookkeeper Andries van Nes and the assistant Jan Hendrik Puls, clerks of this secretariat, as witnesses. Lastly, the Honorable Commander exhibited another report by two special commissioners, Mr. Christoffel de Haan and Gerrit Hendrik Terre, in the presence of the dispenser Jacob Carelsz:, and in the presence of two house carpenters and masons, concerning the necessity of removing the clay and lime on the upper floor of the front of the lodge to raise the presently sagging beams, and to prevent the entire collapse, especially at that place where the foundation of the connection of the small tower, about one third part of the entrance, comes to rest almost purely on the floor outside the side walls and the heaviest beams, consequently having to burden its foundation more and more on account of the annual coating and penetrating rain, so that they experienced it together themselves, and looked out for the best means before anything was begun: therefore, in the opinion of the commander, it was furthermore deemed to consist that in the same place, instead of the clay and lime it presently has to carry, a sufficient ceiling, which is laid noticeably higher in the middle for the runoff of rainwater, and

For, in the presence of the bookkeeper and warehouse master Jacob Carelsz, as well as in the presence of the carpenters Jacob Snoek and Anthonij Pietersz van Keelen, likewise Pieter Sweris and Hendrik Jansz, masons, we have inspected the ceilings of the ordinary council chamber, (since it is to be feared that, in all likelihood, they are on the verge of collapsing due to the weight of clay and lime), and found that in some places several planks had even rotted and become useless, so that likewise, according to the opinion of the aforementioned craftsmen, it would be durable if the same (to prevent further serious damage) were lined with a second ceiling, the more so because the good results have been experienced since the year 1737 on the Northwest bastion ceiling.
