From Persia, dated 31 July 1740. unanimous votes being elected in it, and having been summoned inside, this was made known to him, pointing out his seat. After which it was deliberated whom should now be appointed as secretary, and upon considering that one of the most capable persons for this would be found in the person of the aforementioned Emanuel de poorter, since he had already served for a considerable time as judicial secretary at the office of first clerk, he was therefore also appointed as political secretary with consenting votes. For which purpose he was likewise summoned, and this having been made known to him, he expressed beforehand his humble gratitude for the good opinion, but felt obliged at the same time to state that he would undoubtedly fall short in that office, since he did not possess the docility required for it, and was also apprehensive on account of the casual case of Mr. Terre, in which he had been obliged to testify to the truth, that he might occasionally become subject to some reproach; therefore this time he rather hoped to be excused therefrom, while retaining their favorable thoughts. However, it was replied to him in rejoinder that the service of the Honorable Company required him to accept it, and merely to conduct himself faithfully further according to his ability, and if anyone should take it upon himself to make him any reproach, such a person would certainly find his judge upon making it known. Upon which reassurance he, with obliged emotion, considered himself honored with the election, and after the oath instituted for that office had been read to him, he took it at the hands of the commander, the spoken final words being also in conformity with the necessary custom, and his seat having likewise been taken after being pointed out. Thus, after similar deliberation, the curator ad lites, Gerrad Samuel Sas, was chosen as first clerk, and in his place the bookkeeper Willem Slaars. The first mentioned was likewise, after convocation, read the oath drafted for that office as above, and it was properly taken; just as the said Slaars was also notified in the meeting of his election as paymaster. Thus to each of the advanced persons, wishing God's assistance for the furtherance of the Company's true interest, and in addition being sufficient benevolence from their High Excellencies the well-mentioned, the further necessary accuracy and regularity in their offices was recommended, and all assistance from us jointly was also promised with affection, whenever they might need it. Ending and herewith this resolution with the most humble confidence that it may graciously please their High Honorable, severe, and very worshipful Excellencies to consider our disposition made as necessary, and kindly to approve it. Thus done, resolved, and decreed in the Dutch office of Gamron on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: C. Hoenad, J. Clement, C. de Haan, W. A. van Jongstal, and E. de Poorter, judicial and political secretary. Sunday, on the last day of July, in the year 1740. All being present. Upon the communication made of the satisfactory funds brought from Boucher by the sloop de Valk and received on the 24th of this month, the Honorable Commander convened the members of this board together. When the same appeared, seated, and God's holy name being fervently invoked for assistance, they proceeded, before further resumption, to the commissioner's advices dated the 12th before, with and together with the annexes attached thereto. Resolution taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron. To the end of now weighing the one and the other according to conscience and disposing thereof, if feasible and justifiable. Being 1 2/5 percent net, of which it is alleged as reason that such must have been caused by the heavy drying out and splintering of the wood etcetera. From Persia under date of the last of August 1740. that among those trifles in time something advantageous for the service of the Honorable Company may be found, in compensation for the damages that the Persian money returns in fact produce, according to the various reports received thereon and the gracious orders of the Right Honorable Supreme Indian Government successively arrived in loco, and concerning which for its facilitation we have until now been able to help very little, so we remain obliged to hope that an improving state of times and this realm may quietly ameliorate such a poor disposition of such important matters by him who is master of the land, and what is feasible for us. Regarding the received memorandum for the charging of ƒ13. 3. 8., we have by the resolution of 17 March made the required redress and now also made such known to the respective Coromandel and Malabar ministers, whether it might be through the wrong handling, as it notoriously appears to have happened, of the commissioners and the storekeeper during its unpacking, that the pieces there may yet come to light and thus the sufferers may regain their relief, From Persia under date of the last of August 1740. since they have petitioned for this favor and obtained license thereon. From Persia under date the last of August 1740. to be pleased to address for Europe as occasion offers, and on the other hand so that, in case Your Right Honourable may see fit, to have the incoming wool and also a small box with gum sagapenum for the Fatherland discharged from 't Hoff, and to favour them with a kind forwarding, as they will evidently arrive at the destined place less spoiled and smothered than when they must be sent via Batavia; we also pray, through Your Right Honourable's honoured order, to be allowed to enjoy the assistance of the ministers at Tuticorin, according to our reasonable proposals made thither up to this date, and in case ships from here should call there hereafter, and some profit could be made from the Persian products to recover the monetary losses, and also to make good the dead freight, now that no more wool may be purchased, and to our sorrow little copper can be obtained either; seeing ourselves kindly supported in these important points, on 693 From Persia under date the last of August 1740: all occurring occasions we shall gladly endeavour, to the utmost of our ability, to reciprocate this uncommon civility. Whereas it has pleased the Right Honourable, Severe, Greatly Respected gentlemen to order us, by their esteemed missive of 31 May of the current year, brought here on 28 July last by the ship 't Slot te Kronenburg, to send that small vessel from here directly to Your Right Honourable's government with such cargo as should be in readiness and at hand here for the governments of Your Right Honourable, Coromandel, and the Malabar Commandment, on condition however that if, due to contrary winds etcetera, it could not reach the latitude of Ceylon before 10 September, then to set course directly for Nagapattinam, as Your Right Honourable, if it pleases you, will see from the extract of that esteemed letter accompanying this under No. 4; and as we were just advanced with the dispatch of the bearer of this to the point of taking leave and causing them to depart, likewise all goods petitioned for the respective western factories had been shipped therein, so From Persia under date the last of August 1740 we thought proper in our resolution of 28 July to cause those two vessels to depart directly to Your Right Honourable's government instead of via Tuticorin, though not with such provisions in the instructions given as correspond with the aforesaid formidable order. It is therefore our humble request that, if the bearers of this should reach the roadstead yonder according to our heartfelt desire, Your Right Honourable will please grant a favourable and speedy transport to the goods laden therein for the Coromandel government and the Malabar Commandment, and especially to the dried dates remaining in Steenhoven, since we fear spoilage from a long stay in that vessel, as that commodity is easily subject to overheating. From Persia, dated the ultimate of August 1740. Trade and extensive affairs on that Coast, as well as the council at Nagapatnam. Right Honorable, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Most Generous Lord, and Especially Good Friends. Since we, by the mentioned Ceylon advices of 13 December anno passado, and its covering letters, dated Cochin the 20 January thereafter, simultaneously with Your Right Honorable's revered original missives sub datis 6 August and 27 October of the first mentioned year, but received here on 12 March of this year, and likewise on 5 June the duplicate of the first mentioned agreeable letter, all conveyed hither by English ships, together with the accompanying letter of the last from the intended Commandement, dated 18 February, subsequently forwarded, have received report of Binnewijsent's fortunate arrival there on 29 January just prior, and among other things also of its further dispatch From Persia, dated the ultimate of August 1740. dispatch to Colombo for the unloading of the conveyed small goods and our humble advices for Your Right Honorable then also sent along, we shall for the present excuse the copies thereof, with Your honored approval, since we do not wish to doubt that we shall soon be informed of their good delivery. And as we furthermore find ourselves honored with the kind communication regarding the good delivery of our previous letters sub datis 9 August 1738, 25 February and 4 May 1739, along with the goods that accompanied them, we cannot therefore refrain from thanking Your Right Honorable most obediently by this letter most kindly for both the one and the other, as well as for the polite sharing of 5 copy missives, which under dates of 27 October were conveyed both to the fatherland and Batavia, as well as those of 14 December 1738, together with 29 July and 12 September 1739, also to India's headquarters, offering as a dutiful acknowledgment herewith our humble copies of what we today humbly advise to our Lords Principals 699 From Persia, dated the ultimate of August 1740. Proceeding to an obliging reply, we find ourselves obliged to report that regarding the proposal made to send over the still usable copperwork as it might be and without further alteration, we would gladly accomplish this; likewise, with regard to the same being melted down and cast into plates instead of cakes, we would not fail to do so, were it not that the broken work on the overland route from the upper lands, from where the merchants must have it brought down by pack animals, which are still quite good, would be damaged further and even more than what they were bought for by loading, unloading, throwing, and bumping; and the new material, before one has it here from those same regions, costs the 6 lb 24 ms. or f 10. 4. –, which undoubtedly would not turn out profitable for Your Right Honorable; From Persia, dated the ultimate of August 1740. however, if we may undertake to take a trial of it, we request in reply to this to be permitted to benefit from Your Right Honorable's esteemed opinion. The 50000 lb required by Batavia has been embarked, to which we heartily wish a blessed sale, because in view of the present times we could provide Your Honorable Worships with even larger quantities; and as here also a kind or flower of sulfur for medicine is gathered between Chaar and Chiraas, we take the liberty of offering 63 lb thereof to Your Honorable Worships as a sample, the 6 lb costing m:s 8, at f 3. 8. Meanwhile, we remain in hope of learning of its good success in the service of our Lords and Masters, further sending herewith for your esteemed consideration a memorandum of what foreign nations export from these regions, and in accordance with your letter, everything is described with its gross weight; but regarding the 3 offered gums, unknown to the merchant there, we express our heartfelt regret, the English and French trading very heavily therein (as we must suppose) for returns to Bengal, therefore very respectfully requesting, if no hope of their sale has been given before the arrival of this letter, to send them back to us again, as they can always be sold here without loss; and since we have noted Your Honorable Worships' special favor, among other things in your advices sent to Batavia dated 24 July 1739 regarding the 3000 lb of auripigmentum sent from here thither, that 500 lb thereof had been petitioned, we cannot omit to express our reverent thanks therefor, and further to communicate that upon deliberation on 4 July we thought we would not do amiss in supplying that quantity, wherefore also the required 100 lb have been melted into it, together with our heartfelt wish that it may fare so well therewith that Your Honorable Worships may be provided with sufficient reasons to demand large quantities of that mineral from this region. We have relied most on Your Honorable Worships' earnest and very polite persistence in the finest points to make up for the Persian money loss, and for that reason also found ourselves obliged to take refuge in a parcel of harvested dry tammer, which willy-nilly was accepted in lieu of cash for borrowed money by way of deduction, for the sale of which we hereby urgently request Your Honorable Worships' very kind assistance, just as a request to that effect was also made to the Right Honorable Lord Willem Maurits Bruijning, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Ceylon, and very humbly pointed out that the ship spaces (if those dates, or also the wet kind, or other Persian goods were to yield a profit there upon sale) would return with good quantities and much money loss could be recovered, thus further recognizing the noteworthy interest that this directorate, through various successful products in Your Honorable Worships' important government, though especially through your extraordinary and very obliging offices, appears more and more advantageous. That has been a substantial reason why, on the present occasion, we took the liberty of most humbly beseeching Their High Right Honorable Excellencies, the High Indian Government at Batavia, for authorization to dispatch a ship annually directly toward Nagapatnam depending on the state of the times, and so that Your Honorable Worships, through good success with the most profitable merchandise, might be able to increase the demands; but as, by the safe arrival on the 28th of the past month of July of the ship 't Slot te Kronenburg, we were ordered by Their High Right Honorable Excellencies by letter of 31 May last to send that little vessel, as soon as it had been discharged of the cargo it contained, directly to Ceylon with such goods as might be at hand and ready here for the respective western factories, with this condition, however, that if the said vessel through contrary wind etc. should not reach the latitude of Ceylon before 10 September, it should then be steered directly to Your Honorable Worships' Government, as may be seen if desired in the extract of those highly esteemed letters accompanying this; and notwithstanding that the bearers of this already lay fully laden and ready to sail to set their course directly via Tutucorijn to Batavia under God's blessing, we nevertheless, upon the estimate of July, thought it necessary in the service of our Lords and Masters to have both those vessels depart not via Tutucorijn, but via Ceylon, or else Your Honorable Worships' Government, with such provisions in the instructions as the nature of the matter and the condition of the times require; likewise positive orders that, whenever Ceylon cannot be reached or called at, to then set their course directly to Nagapatnam in order to await further orders from Your Honorable Worships there; if this should now happen and the ships might miss their port, we respectfully request that a favorable report may be granted to the stallions and mares shipped in both vessels for the Ceylon Government, being such about

From Persia under date the last of August 1740. Honorable sirs, dated 16 April, 10, 19, and 29 September, 18 October, and 19 November 1739, has been commissioned, being by the remaining absence of which also for the present deprived as well of the extract of the proceedings held on the 30th of the same month just mentioned, as the attached copy of certain remarks drafted by the said His Right Honorable, the Director Jan Albert Sichterman, upon the considerations of the Right Honorable Gustaaff Willem van Imhoff, Ordinary Councillor of the Netherlands Indies and Governor of Ceylon, concerning various important points regarding Madura, and for all of whose polite sharing we express our very obliged thanks to Your Right Honorables; having not yet received from Colombo a similar honored writing under reference of communication, and therefore we look forward all the more eagerly to the ready packet from Your Right Honorables in order then, according to duty and our very modest experience, to respond dutifully to the one and the other. However, From Persia under date the last of August 1740. however, regarding the honored decision of Your Right Honorables in deferring our humble proposal to suppress the competitors to our aforementioned and well-beloved High Indian Superiors, we find ourselves very obliged for that kind notification, and hope accordingly that that undertaking will nevertheless not be regarded as anything other than a dutiful communication from us, having by experience here and at Bassoura found that the English and French, with their imported rice and freight goods for the Armenian merchants and some only light goods for themselves, have so far made good, indeed even made their losses caused by goods of the same sorting sold cheaper than ours (since many merchants only buy on the name and civil price, and not always on the fineness and quality of the same, on terms of 4 and more months) nevertheless still bearable thereby, as evidenced by their continued ship traffic back and forth, the same being to the utmost prejudicial; and we presume in all humility for the service of the Honorable Company, From Persia under date the last of August 1740. there could be no better expedient for their ruin than also to accept the freight goods, if such suited the Honorable Company, because it could then in a short time be seen whether their shipping decreased, and whether their progress would not soon force them, as well as us, to keep their own merchandise at price. And as long as the present state of affairs remains in statu quo back and forth, the foreign nations will sell their wares, and Your Honorable Company may by no means flatter itself with that expectation, for reasons as stated, and because the former may trade on credit, which with us would run directly contrary to the strict order. April, and two French letters written from Callicatte, from which Your Honours will, as we hope, draw the required clarification in further detail and thereby also be able to proceed somewhat more easily regarding the collection; while, by way of elucidation to Your Honours' question regarding the price of sulphur, it serves to report that the same is negotiated for the Honourable Company at the picol of 125. lb for m:s 25. – at ƒ 10. 2. 8., namely: after purification of all stalks etc. contained therein; but the French and English competing merchants buy, or exchange, it by the lb at m:s 1 1/5 at ƒ 10: 3½: also at m:s 1¼ at ƒ 10. 12., according to which the said weight of 125. lb. amounts to m:s 25. at ƒ 10. 12. 8. or indeed m:d 264. or ƒ 11. 1. 53/; as Your Honours, if you please, will be able to see in the memorandum annexed hereto for your respected consideration of such gums etc. as are exported from here by the said nations in large quantities, to see whether among them might be found such items as Your Honours might wish to be served with; and we shall then not fail to have such petitioned goods From Persia under date ult=o Aug:o 1740 supplied upon good occasion in good and sound quality. To the inclination of the merchants toward the still usable old Persian copper work instead of the cakes, we would presently still gladly give satisfaction, if the same had not been altered somewhat earlier, or before the decay of that whole profitable trade in nearly these times into an absolute impossibility by the monarch's long-plotted scheme not to have that mineral exported from his country; and 125 From Persia under date of the last of August 1740. and therefore we must have patience until we shall have received the reports upon our letters from Basra and Bushehr, whether it might occasionally have been obtainable there. To be able to assure pepper, we shall, regarding the first pound, also specifically repeat here our previously expressed wish in the sight of the English, and regarding the last grain, comfort ourselves after the best judgment shall have been made concerning that still fairly profitable merchandise in these quarters by our aforementioned high Indian Noble rulers. For the kind promise to properly attend to the goods of the Persian stable boy and the crew members of Opperdoes that were recently sent over, we are indebted to Your Honorable Worships and ready for all possible return services. But concerning the promised care to inform the commanders sailing hither about the danger of the pirates as necessary, for which we also heartily thank you, we must also say at the same time that that reporter, the former provisional skipper Jan Martensz, has been confounded by written counter-evidence about this, and thus to our joy all anxiety has been removed, which said lad had caused for some time out of vanity, so that his reward has now also been assigned according to requirements and the decision rendered concerning his committed offenses. Regarding the rumor spread yonder concerning the war between some Powers, and the kind promise to inform us upon its further confirmation, we are wholeheartedly grateful, hoping it may please God to favor our dear fatherland with a desired peace, with all blessing of triumph over those who do not love it; having immediately informed the subordinate offices lying on the seacoast where the foreign nations navigate here, but until now nothing is known on the spot, neither from the French nor from the English, with ongoing intercourse and mutual friendship, and therefore we wish all the more that this may have been merely a rumor. Since at the session of 17 March it was thought fit to inquire of Your Honorable Worships in the departing letter whether yonder by the ship Opperdoes, by mistake, a piece of bleu mourant was not discovered instead of the 1 piece of green plush dispatched therewith, we hereby effect this with kind intentions, as the Right Honorable Gustaaff Willem van Imhoff, Ordinary Councillor of Dutch India, former Governor and Director of the Island of Ceylon, together with the Honorable Council there, in a memorandum of 12 August 1739 brought to our notice here on the 13th of the aforementioned month of March, informed us that upon inspection of the chest of plushes dispatched for that important government by the aforementioned vessel also from here, a piece of green was discovered instead of a piece of bleu mourant plush, which former plush yielded 13. 3. 8 florins less upon sale than the latter was accounted for, with the request that the aforementioned government might be relieved of that amount; as has been done, and those who handled the packing during that dispatch (since they assume that this must have occurred through the negligence of the Warehouse Master and his deputies) have been duly debited for it; so it is that we very humbly request Your Honorable Worships, if that difference should have turned up yonder, that this Directorate may then be credited for the aforementioned 13. 3. 8 florins and notice thereof be given to us, to the end of being able to relieve the sufferers again, who most humbly requested this inquiry of us and obtained our assistance in this matter. From Persia, under date ultimo August 1740. arrived the safe delivery of our successive letters, and since we presently have the opportunity, through a civil offer of service by the bearer of this, the English Agent Mr. Wedwil, to reply to that agreeable letter, we shall, in respect to Your Honours' request made pro dato, bring to your knowledge that up to now nothing has arrived of the goods tasked last year to the Isfahan Residents, which in the letter of 12 December last was promised would be carried out. But since Your Honours, through this uncertainty, might otherwise once again remain deprived of the table fruits included therein, and as some of these have casually arrived in this city, we have had the same impounded, and so this will accompany everything in fresh goods, amounting according to the small invoice to ƒ 490:1: 8, with a friendly request to kindly favour this Directorate for that amount, and please be assured that if we could obtain the remaining parcels of 12. — - From Persia, under date ultimo August 1740 12 chests of Shiraz wine, and 50 lb of prunes, in sound goods, we would not fail likewise to have the same dispatched now; and therefore we ought to supersede this until a further opportunity, in order if possible to oblige Your Honours therewith as well, since that which is expected from Isfahan will easily find another master without loss. From Persia under date the last of August 1740. dispatched via Malabar to Your Honours, we have duly received in succession Your Honours' pleasant letters of 9 August of the said year, as well as 25 February and 14 May of the current year, to which we reply that the gums received alongside them will, at Your Honours' request, be sent this year to the Fatherland for a trial, to see whether they will find a market in the Netherlands, the fulfillment of Your Honours' petition for 300 bales of cinnamon having been postponed by us for the present, partly because these might be supplied directly from Batavia, and also partly because, as the return ships are currently being loaded, it is not yet known how much of that aromatic bark will remain, intending, should Their High Nobilities at Batavia come to order the supply of the aforementioned 300 bales from here, to dispose thereof in such manner as the greatest service of our lords principals shall require. However, the demanded 9000 lb of Ceylon coffee has already been sent to Cochin in 36 bales by the yacht Geertruijden Maria, for further delivery to Your Honours, it having meanwhile been very pleasing to us to learn that those beans are so much in demand in that country, seeing that there is an abundant supply of them here, and we are in a position in due course to oblige Your Honours further therewith. And although Your Honours have had to retain there the riding horse intended as a gift for the King of Kandy on account of its poor appearance, one shall nevertheless through Your Honours' care expect annually from there not only a fine, handsome riding horse for that monarch, but also the much-needed breeding stallions for the Jaffnapatnam stud farm, which have now been looked forward to in vain for three whole years, the more so as the black stallion sent hither on the Anthonia, due to the cramped quarters of that small vessel, became lame, and thus one is still almost back where one started. The goods from the Adriana we have already received from Tuticorin, and expect daily those of the Anthonia; that the sulfur from Persia on this coast or properly at Madraspatnam could fetch a profit of fully seven times the principal, as you deduce in your writing of 9 August of last year from the price stated in our Batavian missive of 24 June 1737, is noticed as a mistake, as a completely different kind of sulfur was spoken of there, namely that serving for medicine, and not common sulfur, as those words also stand therewith, namely that the sample was of a bad and common sort. We have now recently, by letter of the 29th of the past month of July, a copy of which is to be sent to you by the next opportunity, also made known to Their High Nobilities the sale of 2 lb of tutty at an advance of 130 3/4 percent and 1 1/2 lb of auripigmentum at 68 1/2 percent, but these are trifles, which cannot serve as an example of a fixed rate in trade regarding such goods, with which, in the case of a considerable quantity, one could easily be left with a loss.
