From Persia, dated 31 July 1740. Due to a lack of rain in the Bengal lands, the grain grew very sparsely and thinly in the past year, as a result of which the capital of the Indies could obtain nothing, as came to our notice from the documents concerning this with which we were recently favored. It is therefore all the more necessary that Your Honor, proportionately, should the commissioner remain incapable, attend to its fulfillment according to the requisition, in conformity with the order, and as unadulterated and cheap as all possibility allows. If upon arrival at Batavia the same should yield an agreeable result, that product in time might well make amends for the harmful returns in specie; just as it is also not without hope if at Coromandel the recently sent tamarind in kind shall have been converted with a decent profit. Close regard must therefore be taken that the recent petition from the Honorable, Respected Governor and Director Jacob Mossel, together with the Council of the Coast there, as well as in genuine and sound dates, namely 4,000 lb of wet and 4,000 lb of dry ditto, be fulfilled, because their Honors have more reasons given to continue petitioning for more, than might be presumed to the contrary. Furthermore, regarding the requisition concerning this, which accompanies the enclosures, we recommend no further than that we, on all occasions of the returns of the foreign nations which are carried from your parts to the Indian regions, be informed in weight by pounds, price by mamudis and reduced to guilders, along with their assortments, and how much Your Honor in all probability could also secure of each, to the end that, if one should sometimes be honored with the authorization to be permitted to undertake the Masters' interests in a well-founded manner, through such information one may stay out of the embarrassment of having first to institute an investigation thereabouts; and in which delicate matter the importance also entails keeping a more attentive commissioner for such accurate correspondence, so that we may discover in concert whether by exchange of commodities or spending of the country's currency in obtaining the products, we might also to some degree participate in the profits of which their competitors know how to boast, even though we are assured here that not everything they pretend is the truth. Whereas we have been able to obtain here the well-known pilot by the name of Hagie Mamet Ibin-dager, in order, according to former custom, to serve the bearer of this for 600 mamudis or 250 guilders for the outward and return voyage, to the end of providing to the best of our ability that he be not stranded near the river around Kharg, especially on account of the uncertain passage for strangers, this has also been effected, and half of his wages has been paid to him in deduction. Your Honor at the head office must therefore properly credit him for the said amount, and have that man dealt with according to the ancient custom in your parts during his presence. All the foregoing was drafted long ago, but there have been so many intervals with repairs of ships, and executions of punishment on scoundrels of that sort that were extremely necessary to carry out, that all carpenters, and also the fiscal, indeed everyone, had to, could, and yet stirred their hands enough in various ways, considered as the worst of a bad monsoon which, when the weather is over, promises for everyone the dear sunshine through a rest so long desired. And since upon the first occasion we shall dutifully acquit ourselves of communicating these matters most humbly to our said Noble, Right Honorable Indian Supreme Rulers as soon as our ability will at least allow it, we promise Your Honor thus what then principally transpired with one thing and another. Meanwhile, for further handling and notification, there was confirmed to us, among other things, the safe receipt of Your Honor's missive sent hither per English runner, dated 17 March of this year (complete according to the register). Just before the intended meeting began on the 23rd, we also received toward evening the reports from Bushire, which were remitted under the 5th just mentioned, with the dates 7 and 28 February prior, through writings exchanged by Your Honor's commissioners, especially to show the poor prospects in which Your Honors mutually have made us look forward with enough unanimity to the good expectation that we had previously for the fulfillment of the 100 lasts of wheat; with that difference, however, that just in Basra not always a man of 108 lb of unadulterated sort could be obtained for 8 mamudis or 3 guilders and 8 stuivers as in Bushire, but rather a man of 82½ lb at the aforesaid price, one time, however, somewhat less and the other somewhat more, since it was even then assured that the same man of barley was obtained for 3½ and 4 mahmudis in like manner.

Persia, under date 31 July 1740. manner approximately about a year ago could sometimes have been obtained; however, now having seen that in almost all matters of business, no matter how minor or of whatever capital they may be, changes can occur through rains, troubles, and other unpreventable accidents, in such manner as one can best observe in the course of the world in cases of trade; consequently, one is obliged to regard this as an inevitable necessity and, according to the ratio of time and such contingencies, surrender oneself to other measures which may indeed be applicable toward satisfying everyone's objective; and for that reason, on 27 June last, concerning that point, it was judged most advisable to order Your Honour and the Commissioner to purchase that grain in quantity of the very best sort available, and for as civil a price as Your Honour can obtain in both places, and to deliberate with one another regarding the quality while sending samples to each other, and likewise communicating the price as well as the quantity that each will be able to supply toward the requirement of the said 100 Lasts, under the condition that the chaloup, upon a speedy return to collect other merchandise from this place, shall bring no wheat along, since arriving here in the hottest times it would be subject to notorious decay, over and above other damages from unnecessary porterage fees and spillage during unloading and reloading into the ship; therefore, everything that the Commissioner procures as occasion arises must be stored there, and await the return of Midderrak from Your Honour's residency, or rather the second sending hither of the said chaloup; but in the event that the fulfillment of the cited quantity is utterly impossible for Your Honour in both places, we expect to be advised regarding this as to how much is deficient thereof, and if it is feasible, that such report could be brought to us by the end of the upcoming month of August, in order then to look out for the shortfall; this is in accordance with the resolution taken in that regard, an extract of which will be provided to Your Honour hereafter, as the resolution is still under preparation. Regarding the local news, everyone fluctuates between hope and fear, for in case the King of this realm should settle peacefully upon his throne, then with regard to trade, the former would be much satisfied, and it could be no less expected that the extortion or acts of violence for raising money, subsidies, provisions, etc. for the military forces would cease of their own accord; and concerning the fear of Mhamet Takkie Chan, of whose insatiable and dangerous nature Your Honour will still be well aware of how he is governed, his latest undertaking against the Bolaeds has indeed been just as bad as that of Masquetta, and turned out with the loss of most of his best soldiers, baggage, and the ruin of the King's naval fleet, as none of the ships and vessels, neither large nor small, remained without loss of anchors, masts, etc.; the men aboard have been swept away by hunger and thirst as if by the plague, and he himself resides at Jagien with only a few men, without anyone knowing for certain as yet whether he will come to this place or not; his son Miersa Resae, with this admiral of that surviving pearl fleet named Meer Alie Chan, having arrived here on 17 April last, and it is said that every one of them is in want of everything, so that it is to be presumed we too shall not remain unplagued; for the rest, we refer to the news extracts accompanying this letter, which we have received from, among others, Bengal; and the interested parties express to Your Honour their very humble gratitude for the achieved success of their obtained advantages; while we still seriously recommend that Your Honour cause to be prevented, with all prudence and diligence, the desertion of the European as well as native Company servants, for which purpose you are to give such verbal orders as seem capable of being carried out without prejudice and appear expedient; Your Honour is further instructed regarding this point to adhere to the instruction handed by us to the ship's crew upon their departure, a copy of which accompanies the annexes for examination. According to its registers, completely over Bouchar on 2 November and 9 December past, two pieces of Your Honors' very revered missives of dates 24 September and the ultimate of October before were delivered in good order, and this morning also direct via the French ship Le Diligent Your Honors' highly esteemed writings of 28 November last, from which we have seen to our grievous sorrow the embarrassment in which Your Honors not without reason found yourself, through the detention of our trade books which were already closed on 20 September of the past year and on 10 October thereafter (see the accompanying duplicate) sent by an expressly hired tranki to Bhender â Boucher to the Commissariat, Mr. Jacob van Schoonderwout, in order to reach their required address to Gamron from there as speedily as possible, and which books and further writings arrived there on 20 October, but to our sensible sorrow from that time until 15 November, or indeed 26 days, were detained, as appears from the Commissariat's own writings hither of 22 October and 21 November of the ended year, to which we refer for brevity; meanwhile we hope that, after perusal thereof, the delay of the books and other papers will not be imputed to us, since Mr. Schoonderwout clearly mentions therein that their forwarding, for several (to us unknown) reasons, could not well have taken place sooner and more conveniently, while in more time and on a further occasion we shall most obediently and in detail follow with the missing reply to Your Honors' said three letters. Furthermore, the native government here is very tolerable and manageable for the Europeans, and the old musallim Isouff Aga continues here still as governor, but commerce proceeds here very slowly through want of ready money and foreign merchants, of which we shall furnish a further report by the next opportunity. In the meantime, for the rest, we refer to the accompanying day-journal kept here from the 1st of October to the ultimate of November last, and for whose approval we most humbly pray, as the disbursement therein has been done with a frugal hand, the reasons whereof are to be seen in our said day-journal. Rightly and justly have Your Honours pointed out our omission in not stating the weight at the inventory of the silver horse harnesses, according to the Honourable Company's old maxims, wherefore we hereby most humbly implore Your Honours for pardon, and at the same time promise for the future to prevent such omissions through careful supervision, in order thereby to provide Your Honours with the required satisfaction as is hoped will be done by this accompanying report; and whereas therein the weight of the same, and the cause of the diminution is indicated as far as possible, and it further appears that the two harnesses received from Gamron in the year 1726 have become entirely unserviceable through more than 13 years of use; we therefore most humbly request that Your Honours please permit us Persia under date 31:' July 1740. to have one good bridle made by the silversmith out of the two mentioned bridles (with the addition of a little silver), item to have the old saddle with its accessories repaired, and besides this to purchase a new ditto with its stirrups for the second horse, as well as two new Turkish shabracks, namely, one for the use of the Company's interpreter, and the other for the chaoosh or staff-bearer, together with a copper drinking kettle for the horses instead of the old one which has become unserviceable, while Your Honours may rest assured that with the repair and purchase thereof, the highly recommended economy will be observed to the best of our ability. That we, owing to the shortness of time at the departure of the ship Binnewijzend, were unable to furnish a complete report regarding the fraudulent intention in discharging the former broker Fattitjent from service, as ought to have been done, Persia under date 31:' July 1740. grieves us from the bottom of our hearts, and pained us all the more because we thereby brought upon ourselves the righteous displeasure of Your Honours, wherefore we shall take great care that the same does not occur again in the future, but on the contrary that the high orders are dutifully complied with: and since the Company's interpreter, according to the measure of his ability and capacity, assists the still continuing Banyan, by name Nagha Tjittoen (who has now served this office off and on for more than four years, and through his competence and faithful conduct has hitherto given us satisfaction) and thereby reassures us all the more; aside from the precaution which the first signatory of this applies through a continuous accounting, we now live in hope of remaining free from all evil consequences. By reason of the good satisfaction Persia under date 31: July 1740. that is supplied to us by those servants, as well as further to encourage them thereto, we could not refrain from presenting the said Banyan Tjettoe on his great festival of lights, according to the ancient custom of the country, on date primo November of the past year, with a fine shawl to drape around himself, which cost the Honourable Company mam:s 200; and which action we hope, and most obediently pray, will be considered by Your Honours as well done, and therefore also favourably passed. 1621 From Persia under date 31 July 1740. dated 28 November last and accordingly report most obediently that, to our singular obligation, there has been delivered to us in extract such respectful and favorable detailed account as Your Honors regarding this subordinate office were about to present in all respect to Their High Noble, Right Honorable the High Indian Government at Batavia, by the Company's incoming vessel, and for the benign transmission of which we remain to Your Honors bound to the utmost degree. And whereas during the drawing up of this, or on 26 January just past, Your Honors' highly esteemed further letters of 17 December of the past year were also brought over via Boucher together with the annexes relative thereto, we shall likewise serve thereupon, and communicate to Your Honors completely respectfully, that we have learned therefrom with no common joy of the good and long-wished-for reception of our humble writing of the date 10 October of the past year, accompanied by the copies of our trade books and further records annexed thereto according to the dictate of its register, and furthermore that the same, after revisions made, were found completely to agree with the main books, and subsequently that Your Honors had seen with pleasure the decreased expenses and the profits achieved in that recently ended financial year, which we hope may increase yearly to the welfare of the Honorable Company and the satisfaction of Your Honors, and to which the speedy dispatch of a Company ship with pounds and other goods (according to Your Honors' favorable and no less kind promise) will greatly contribute. Persia under date 31st July 1740. to remain, and more such Turkish threats. But we have continued to appease that governor and other rulers with kind words, delaying until the arrival of a Company ship, at which time we promised to satisfy them reasonably, where the matter has remained until now. Regarding the sandbank that recently accumulated in this Euphrates river, the Captain Bassa with the assistance of his men indeed made efforts to clear it away by damming that false river or large branch named Caron. But the opening being too large, the drift of the water there too strong, and the Captain Bassa too greedy to spend as much money on it as he had extorted from the natives under that pretext, the efforts of that Bassa have been of little effect, and the said bank has remained as previously mentioned. Notwithstanding this inconvenience, Persia under date 31st July 1740. however, 2 Moorish ships, namely one large and one small, dared the bank half-laden and passed outward from this roadstead, and thus departed for Souratta. The most credible reports that the Armenians have only now obtained from Spahan assure us that the Persian monarch or sovereign is still alive and has arrived at Farat from the borders of the realm of Delhi with incalculable treasures; furthermore, that he has summoned to him the crown prince, or his son, along with some other grandees, and had sent orders to Spahan to have 80 pieces of gold cloth made there as covers for the elephants brought along, to the end of dispatching with speed 12 head of those animals, among other valuables, by a distinguished embassy to the Turkish emperor, and likewise to send a similar gift in the same manner to the Tsarina of Muscovy.
